Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:00 am on February 12, 2012 by Allahpundit

The new national frontrunner (the eleventh of the campaign) gets his turn in the spotlight this morning with appearances on three different shows. Jack Lew, Obama’s new chief of staff, will actually top him by hitting all five — a rare “full Ginsburg” — to spin the contraception “compromise” and explain how The One’s new budget will avert America’s fiscal catastrophe by squeezing a few more bucks out of the very rich. For Palin fans, though, there’s only one option: “Fox News Sunday,” where Sarahcuda will chat with Chris Wallace about the race. Seems doubtful she’ll endorse, but what about an “anybody but Romney” anti-endorsement? That’d help Santorum a lot with conservatives who are still undecided between him and Gingrich.

The complete line-up via WaPo:

NBC’s Meet the Press: Rick Santorum; Jack Lew, White House Chief of Staff; Bill Burton, Priorities USA; Peggy Noonan, Wall Street Journal; EJ Dionne, Brookings Institution and Washington Post; Joe Scarborough, MSNBC

ABC’s This Week: Rick Santorum; Jack Lew, White House Chief of Staff; Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI);George Will, ABC; Donna Brazile, Democratic strategist; Liz Cheney, Keep America Safe; David Ignatius, Washington Post

CBS’ Face the Nation: Jack Lew, White House Chief of Staff; Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX); Sen. Mitch McConell (R-KY)

Fox News Sunday: Jack Lew, White House Chief of Staff; Sarah Palin, Fox News; Bill Kristol, Weekly Standard; Mara Liasson, NPR; Kimberley Strassel,Wall Street Journal…

CNN’s State of the Union with Candy Crowley: Rick Santorum; Jack Lew, White House Chief of Staff; Sen. Joe Liebermann (I-CT); Dana Bash, CNN; Mike Duffy, Time

but it’s surprising to me that so many of her followers rush to defend her no matter what she says or does.

I’ve actually defended her on liberal websites in the past, because I believe she’s been treated unfairly.

Syzygy on February 12, 2012 at 11:52 AM

The latter, I believe, drives the former. It’s the natural reaction of good-hearted people and should not be dismissed so readily. It is not irrelevant.

Well, I now keep them in stocks for an extra 2 hours each day, so I guess I feel just a teensy bit guilty.

Flora Duh on February 12, 2012 at 12:10 PM

…And a large part of the reason for that is that, after eight years of GWB, the voters very stupidly voted for a Democrat majority in both the House and the Senate.

Syzygy on February 12, 2012 at 10:32 AM

I feel compelled to proffer this: The election of B.H. Obama (and other congressional Democrats) was greatly enhanced by (1) An unrelenting leftist media that blamed Bush for everything and (2) a reluctance by Bush (and also, somewhat the GOP itself) to mount any kind of response to those attacks.

Their near-total silence amounted to a de facto legitimization (in the minds of many voters) of the accusations… e.g. Gee Martha, under Bush we have 5.5% unemployment – isn’t that awful?

Granted, the weakness of the GOP candidate in 2008 certainly didn’t help, but the poisonous 1-2 combination that I mentioned above pretty much ushered in the Democratic majorities and the Obama win.

I pray that our nation can collectively “do the right thing” in November and vote out the anti-American marxist vermin that are infecting the halls of government at all levels, no matter what party they belong to.

She’s not a uniter, she’s a divider, and considering the fact it’s the most important election in our lifetime, where unity is crucial, her backstabbing is not helpful.

And to be clear, I’m not saying she has to promote Romney. But she is actively trying to pull the rug out from under him and it’s unseemly. Let him rise or fall on his own…

Buy Danish on February 12, 2012 at 11:17 AM

Palin’s track record shows she is anything but a divider.
We are still in the primary season where an opinion is still allowed. If Sarah leans towards Newt not Romney its still allowed since we are still in the selection process.
I have full confidence in her that when Tampa is over and done with and we select a candidate she will get behind him and many of those running for the House and Senate as well.
Few have the charisma and ability to fire up crowds raise money and doing the hard job of getting pubbies elected with a hostile media like she does!
Hope many here have not forgotten the past two elections where Palins efforts got many on our side elected in many key races. Without her support we would have far fewer members in each body today.I’m not forgetting it.

Negative comments about Mormons are made here day after day. For some reason those comments get ignored. That was my point – not that you don’t like Mormons, or have said things critical of Mormons, or anything remotely like that. It was about the double standards of who gets criticized here…

On the other hand you directly accused csdeven of engaging in vile, violent rhetoric against Palin – using a source that has nothing to do with Hot Air. That is deplorable and there is absolutely no comparison to my observations about the general passivity of commenters who ignore the constant flow of bigotry found at these pages.

That was my point, how was I supposed to criticize something I DIDN’T see? Why don’t you go read the Sarah Palin at CPAC thread, and see how many times I called a Palin supporter out for comments she was making about Romney, jailbreak AND csdeven?

On the other hand you directly accused csdeven of engaging in vile, violent rhetoric against Palin – using a source that has nothing to do with Hot Air. I noticed you didn’t address the disgusting comments csdeven makes about Palin supporters, many of them in the very thread I mentioned above. If he/she is going to dish it out, they can expect to get it back.

You may think you do with the “I’m smarter than you all” type of comments you make, and csdeven may think he/she does with their nonsensical rants and insults, but neither of you impress, NOR intimidate, me.

And I’ve got a feeling that just chafes your butt. :-)

Or watch Miss Crabtree tell me to eat my veggies, while she wastes my tax dollars flying to places (First Class, mind you) that i won’t be able to afford to go, short of winning the lottery or marrying a heiress…

Hmmm, which do ya think I’m gonna do?

We’re seeing quite a bit of that on this thread. Once again, the Mittbots have no principle other than team cheer-leading and divisive negative personal attacks because they are nothing more than avatars of the candidate himself, who is similarly substance-free and unprincipled.
He’s only gotten as far as he has because he’s tried to be “Generic Republican.” Now that the voters have seen the skull beneath the skin through his negative campaigning, his favorables are going to plummet and we’re going to see the inevitable consequence of nominating someone with no inner core as the candidate.

The Mittbots couldn’t do a better job if they were pro-Obama astroturfers.

She’s just mad that her husband finds Palin more attractive than her.
Either that or she’s jealous of Palin’s success as an actual leader. Because prior to her “quitting”, she’s done more than most politicians can say. That girds females like BD’s loins.

And I try to say that with as little disrespect to women as a whole.

To change the subject back to the thread title, I am watching my DVR of Fox News Sunday. The WH Chief of Staff is just spewing garbage about the health care contraception issue. He is doubling down on how it is FREE to the insurance companies, NO COST!!!!!!!!! He is citing actuarials about long term costs of plans with and without contraception. Of course he is completely ignoring the fundamental first amendment issue about the State interfering with the internal operation of a religious institute. This guy is just so full of sh!t. He has a very arrogant, smug way of talking. I am not even Catholic and this guy completely offends me.

Wallace is trying to nail him on the fairy tail budget, but he is squirming out of that and Wallace is not following up with hard questions on entitlement reform, etc.

Maybe back in the day, Romney turned her down for a date and now this is her revenge? I mean, angering the conservative base is a pretty solid revenge tactic.

It’s the only thing that makes sense.

Midwestprincesse on February 12, 2012 at 1:57 PM

Have you read her Iowa speech? Do you think it’s cool to make unsubstantiated allegations (like Flora Duh!)? To engage in vague innuendo? To suggest that there’s something wrong with fundraising? To accuse our candidates of being “crony-capitalists” without giving one specific example to back this up? The speech was a smear, I strenuously objected to it then, and I continue to object to these tactics.

Buy Danish on February 12, 2012 at 11:45 AM

We’ve gone over this before. This is what she said that you seem to compare to clubbing baby seals to death.

“Now to be fair, some GOP candidates also raised mammoth amounts of cash, and we need to ask them, too: What, if anything, do their donors expect in return for their “investments”? We need to know this because our country can’t afford more trillion-dollar “thank you” notes to campaign backers. It is an important question, and it cuts to the heart of our problem”.

You forget that Palin fought Republican corruption in Alaska … and won. She doesn’t want someone elected who feels obligated to reward donors with taxpayer money. Is that really something you disagree with?

darwin on February 12, 2012 at 11:59 AM

This is what I’ve been waiting for BuyDanish to answer through this thread. In fact, I picked up on it earlier myself and posted a question to her about it. So far she hasn’t answered either question, mine or darwin’s. I’d really like to know–is she truly okay with crony capitalism, “pay to play” and the permanent political establishment as long as those involved in it have an “R” by their names?

We shall see if we get an answer, straight or otherwise.

Interesting watching Jack Lew today. His talking point today is that birth control will decrease overall health care costs. Even on FOX he did not really clarify if he is meaning that there will be less children hence less costs or if the somehow birth control was an effective method to prevent cancer and other health ailments to save costs later on.

The less children argument has a flaw in it, who the heck is going pay taxes and for others to go on birth control in the future if there are less children?

The health care issue might be interesting, is it more healthy to go on birth control? I’m not a woman so, I don’t really know. Are there trade offs side effects they are not taking into consideration? A woman on the pill could be prone to STDs.

One needn’t agree or disagree with either side of any of these arguments to see that this dude is a loser. He is such a total hard-azz on the whacko fringe of society that no amount of effort will keep the discussion about anything other than trivial nonsense. If any fool thinks that the incumbent POTUS is going to be unseated in this day and age over religio-culcha wars then Santo is you guy. What are you waiting for me to respond to?

Don’t worry about Buy Danish.
Buy Danish just comes off like that mean girl in grade school. Or at least the tattletale. I can attest to the tattletale because I was one myself. :)
Midwestprincesse on February 12, 2012 at 1:42 PM

This^^^^, my friends, is what MidwestPrincesseBarbie thinks is substantive criticism. Of one thing I do not doubt: You have been a catty, empty-headed little c word throughout your short life, and being a “tattle-tale” is the least of your offenses.

Buy Danish, How are you? Sorry to interject into a conversation I know only a little about. With that said if I am incorrect about this I will gladly stand down. I have come to the conclusion based on observations of comments. csdeven is in fact a hater. There is no common thread between hate and passion.
Bmore on February 12, 2012 at 1:55 PM

That may or may not be true. That’s not the point. Flora Duh specifically allegedhim of being among those who made violent comments about Palin, away from Hot Air.

She said:

Hey, I asked you twice last night but you never answered me. Come on, proudly tell us which one of these are yours..

That kind of speculation is beyond the pale. If she wants to point to violent comments made by anyone here, fine. I encourage it. If she has evidence csdeven is among those at that You Tube hall of shame of twitter users, she is obligated to provide it. I see no one with his name there, and while he has made some idiotic comments I don’t recall him every making any threats against Palin. If someone can point to an example of him doing that here, fine, provide a link.

Barring that evidence, this is nothing but a smear.

By the way , I totally agree with you about John Mica. He is a pretty good congressman on everything except the money issue. He is a bring home the bacon fool.

I actually used to like that about him. But 10 trillion more in debt the last 10 years has woken me up up from my slumber. Atleast I can tell him that in his phone hall meetings. HA!

I watched the twitter vid. Most of those comments if made here would be hammer swinging time. Without context I can’t and won’t speak on Flora’s behalf, no need to, she will do that in short order, if I know Flora. As far as commentary on this site let me repeat my earlier comment. csdeven is in fact a hater. There is no common thread between hate and passion. Are there various degrees of hate? You tell me. I will now remove myself from this and let it be settled by its original participants. Thanks.

Prove it, Carnac. Provide a link where they advocated violence or fantasized about violence, or shut the eff up.

Bmore on February 12, 2012 at 4:43 PM

Yes, the hammer would have swung. As for your description of csdeven as a “hater”, that is a sweeping charge, but you really have no way of knowing what’s in his heart and mind. Similarly, to call something a “hate crime” is a dangerous route to take (a designation conservatives oppose but liberals approve of). I’m accused of being a “hater” all the time. I loathe this sort of rhetoric and do not use that word to describe my adversaries.

My take is that every time she hears the name Sarah Palin
mentioned either on tv, radio or in print, and in particular,
on Hot Air, Buy Danish goes to the mirror and runs away screaming
because she doesn’t like what she sees. No amount of plastic
surgery will put her in Palin’s league.

True I am only making my judgment based on his/her comments. I never referred to it as “hate crime”. For the record my view is hate is hate and folks who want to post hate filled remarks shouldn’t be surprised when they get called on it. Conservative or liberal hate speak, makes no difference to me which side of the isle it comes from. Hopefully folks might recognize it as I have and try to improve the tone and rhetoric. I have never accused you of anything, you have always been straight with me. I see no reason to change that. Thanks.

That’s the key word isn’t it. Actually I’ve asked the question at least 3 times, with no affirmation or denial from him/her.

Do I honestly think csdeven’s is included among that list of disgusting comments?

Not really, the purpose is to show that the wide paint brush csdeven uses can be used by others also.

“Barring that evidence, this is nothing but a smear.”

And calling someone “inbred trailer trash” is not?

Don’t bother answering, we all get it, it’s part of the handbook used by some Romney supporters, ‘civility from thee, but not from me’.

Oh please! This is not about “civility”. You made an accusation, linking him to a page of left wing thugs who want to off Palin. That is hardly comparable to calling someone “inbred trailer trash”. Is csdeven a reprehensible jerk for making a statement like that? Yes, of course. But that is a far cry from calling for an assassination.

Meanwhile, I have the pleasure of dealing with the oh so “civil” MidwestPrincesse ^^^and her Barbie sidekick, Amjean^^^ who are using strictly ad hominem attacks because they can’t actually present a coherent argument on the merits. This is how some people roll here…

Single word exclamation, accompanied by a gesture where the hand is swept palm down over the head from front to back with about three inches clearance.

Indicates that the statement was too sophisticated for the listener and has gone “way over their head”.

you forget that Palin fought Republican corruption in Alaska … and won.

There Goes The Neighborhood on February 13, 2012 at 2:00 AM

Rick Santorum is really against the individual mandate. Watch any debate and you’ll see that he’s barely able to contain his contempt for Gov. Romney’s healthcare plan in Massachusetts.

However, in 1994, he was singing a different tune. Back then, he wanted to require people to buy health insurance. Here’s a 1994 LeHigh Valley article

“Candidates Diverge On Health Care Remedies”

“Santorum and Watkins would require individuals to buy health insurance rather than forcing employers to pay for employee benefits.”

mountainaires on February 12, 2012 at 9:47 AM

The reporter was wrong. Yes, reporters do get things wrong. Frequently.

You won’t find where Santorum actually said that. But during that same race where the reporter claimed that was Santorum’s position, you can find video of a debate Santorum had for the Senate election where he very clearly says he is NOT for an individual mandate.

First you post a link claiming Santorum is a big-government conservative, then you post a link claiming Santorum is a hypocrite who was for an individual mandate. You seem to be working quite hard to run down Santorum.

There Goes The Neighborhood on February 13, 2012 at 2:04 AM

Most people in Congress are hardly at the entry level stage of their lives but are successful in their own right. They shouldn’t be staying long enough to become professional politicians but remain citizen servants. That’s who you get trillions in debt with single digit approval ratings.

Cindy Munford on February 12, 2012 at 9:40 AM

That’s an argument for term limits, which is another issue altogether.

And if one is a newly-elected member of Congress, they’re in an entry-level position. Regardless of their previous successes.

Syzygy on February 12, 2012 at 9:53 AM

This is a wrong-headed argument based on a bad analogy. Congress is not a hierarchical corporation where you start in an entry-level position and work your way up. Rather, representatives are elected specifically to represent their constituents. Obviously, longevity in a body like Congress will have its advantages. But there’s no reason why a Representative should be told he can’t represent his district until he has a couple years experience in Congress.

Top-level positions in Congress are one thing, but there are plenty of leadership positions in Congress that are not top-level positions. And Congress has an obligation to not shut out other validly elected representatives based on the theory that freshmen are in entry-level positions.
