Hot Air Survey Results: CPAC Edition

posted at 6:35 pm on February 12, 2012 by Patrick Ishmael

Rick Santorum has taken the lead for the first time at Hot Air. He is followed by Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, and Ron Paul.

Who did voters prefer in 2008, and who do they prefer now?

Questions? You can find me here.

A big government guy who wants to run my health care vs. a big government guy who wants to control what happens in my bedroom.

DRayRaven on February 12, 2012 at 8:04 PM

So tired of this stupid meme by our socially liberal wing. Look, you already have government controlling what happens in your bedroom. Behold: laws against polygamy, incest, bestiality, pedophilia, necrophilia, etc…

And the whole “two consenting adults” thing doesn’t cut it either, because incest can still be two consenting adults. Just face that fact that government does, has, and will probably always have a say as to what happens in your bedroom. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Also, Rick didn’t say he is going to reintroduce sodomy laws. His position is that it is within the power of the states (not the fed) to do so or not to do so.

Yeah, he did pretty well with the “gotcha question” spewing interviewer…couldn’t watch it all, wanted to either puke or strangle the interviewer.

But Santorum kept smiling, and parried all the attacks.

Not bad.

I still prefer Newt’s “nuke ‘em” style but smiling as you say “f u” has a definite grace to it.

Blame Santorum, not anyone else. He’s the one who has said government has every right to determine what you do or do not do in your bedroom with your spouse.

AngusMc on February 13, 2012 at 10:44 AM

Granted, it’s not everyone who does this. But, to be honest, i was taken aback at the level of unkindness I have seen in the comments here.

In any case… I am REALLY looking forward for this Primary to be over so that (whoever the nominee is) we can (hopefully) get to a more balanced and less vitriolic banter/discussion here.

RightWay79 on February 13, 2012 at 10:03 AM

Happily, the sentiment you express seems to be bubbling to the surface and civility may be making a comeback here in HA. Folks have a right to vent but one does not readily garner adherents by shrieking invectives.

The War Planner on February 13, 2012 at 10:46 AM

Wikipedia Republican Primary

Newt is still very much in this race. He is significantly ahead of Santorum in the popular vote: Newt 27.5% Santorum 18.7%. He’s about tied in the number of delegates, but the number of committed vs uncommitted vs whatever happens with Fl is still a mystery to me and many commentators. Last I saw Newt was up in GA, OK, and TX with another debate coming.

This is a long way from over and I’m pulling for Newt!

You didn’t read my post (beyond the first line) and I guarantee you cannot find a quote in which Santorum says he wants government to regulate sex with your spouse.

Of course, sex with your spouse is already regulated (no zoophilia, no necrophilia, no threesome with a minor or relative, etc…). Try wrapping your argument around that.

I am looking for a conservative-leaning, go-get-them, well-informed person to represent the American people as President of the United States. I believe that person is Newt Gingrich.

Patrick, I asked yesterday that you post the results of the age and gender categories with the poll results. This morning I see you have not amended your post with an update of those results.

You required that information in your poll and I think it is an important qualifier for your results.

I realize that information is indicative of the HA target audience and important info for Townhall, but is there some reason Townhall will not publish the age and category results to the participants?

Okay, this one left me more than a little stunned. You did write “many.”

Were you thinking of the relatively distant past, back to, oh, let’s say . . . George McGovern? Please, help me out here!

Think for a moment about the field of declared (some of them briefly) candidates from the 2008 Democrat primary, for example . . . Obama, Clinton, Biden, Edwards, Dodd, Richardson, Kucinich (I didn’t count Gravel because he not only dropped out, but then tried and failed to become a weirdo candidate).

Please explain to us which one of them fit all (or in many instances any) of your categories?

Even more reason why it is a ridiculous for anyone who is for laws necrophilia to cry about government intruding on their sex lives.

The only way to really be against Santorum’s quote (that everyone likes to throw around) is to say that you want those various things to be legalized. Many try to say “between consenting adults” but won’t come out in favor of a right to incest or polygamy (often stating “well, TWO consenting adults”…which still leaves the incest conundrum). I’ve yet to find someone who is all for legalizing all forms of sex. That means I’ve yet to find someone who can actually be against Santorum’s position without being hypocritical about it.

Dork B. on February 13, 2012 at 11:19 AM

Yes, the quote that says government should get involved in the bedroom.

Here it is for ya:

They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do. Government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulation low and that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues, you know, people should do whatever they want. Well, that is not how traditional conservatives view the world, and I think most conservatives understand that individuals can’t go it alone, that there is no such society that I’m aware of where we’ve had radical individualism and that it succeeds as a culture.

Try to find the word “spouse” in there somewhere. Also, find where he says that he wants to reintroduce sodomy laws or any other little pet liberal love.

He simply said government should get involved in the bedroom. Unless you support legalizing incest, you cannot argue against this position.

Huh.

Santorum in 2005:

“Sex, is supposed to be for purposes that are yes, conjugal and unitive, but also procreative.” Most presidents don’t talk about such thingsthese are important public policy issues. They have profound impact on the health of our society.”

Santorum does want to leave it to the states, actually. He’s stated so several times. That is a highly overlooked aspect of his argument. Notice he doesn’t say Federal Government, he simply says government.

Of course, I think the fed does have anti-polygamy laws (as well as others) right now…I’m not sure on that though. Are you against those?

Well…I’m not sure where “socially libertarian” ends its liberalism (as it free to do whatever). It changes per person.

I agree that I don’t want the Fed involved. You’ll find that most of us “so-cons” are the theocracy-loving type. We just realize that there should be some limits placed on your freedom…even in the bedroom. I don’t necessarily want them made by the fed though. I prefer them delineated by the states, but I’m not going to lobby to overturn federal incest/polygamy laws. Won’t lobby for them either. Morality laws that don’t violate Constitutional/inherent rights should be regulated by local governments.*

In all honesty, I’m pretty sure we’re mostly in agreement here. From what I’ve heard from Santorum, he’s mostly in the same boat.

*abortion is murder to me, not a morality issue.

Yes, we agree. My SoCon reality is lower than my conscience likes, personally I’m trying to work on my status in the afterlife.

But, concerning the government of the U.S.A. it was designed to NOT be “in my face”. It’s very much In My Face, every step I take daily.

I love Jefferson: “If it neither pick my pocket nor break my leg, I care not”. That’s pretty libertarian, and pretty much where I stand IRT the Federal “government”.

Read “Federal Dictatorship”, IMHO.

You’re assuming an awful lot there, Tim – I’m pro-life. I think Abortion could only be justified if giving birth would kill the mother. I think Abortion in cases of rape or incest is mudering a fetus. I think Bigamy, Polyagmay, Besiality, and Pedophilia should be outlawed by every state – and I support states that ammended their constitions to outlaw gay marriage – hell I support any state that votes to keep their Sodomy laws on the books. Last time I looked, I agree with Santorum on his social posisitons. I even agree with his statements on Intelligent Design class curriculum.

I just think Romney is the better candidate and would be a better President. I think there’s nothing there that would dissapoint Social Cons. I think Romney has ability that Santorum doesn’t, plus he will have more appeal to Moderates and Libertarians.

I was mearly pointing out what the guy said, because by itself, it’s a bad soundbite for his campaign – to Undecideds, Moderates, Libertarians, people who voted for Obabma who regret it, etc. My support for Romney and my skepticism of Santorum’s chances doesn’t make me pro-abortion or pro-deviant lifestyle. Does that make sense to you, Tim?

Romney is certainly not pro-life enough for me. Sorry, I don’t trust him. I know he’s supposedly changed to being pro-life, but I have no evidence to back that up, he’s done nothing to prove it. Also, and I could be wrong, I’ve read somewhere (can’t remember) his wife is still pro-killing babies.

I guess my point is, why gamble when I can have the real deal in Santorum as far as social issues are concerned. Yeah, I prefer a Palin to Santorum (most definitely). Don’t get me wrong, I worry a bit about his “passionate” stuff, but his record on government intervention and spending is a drop in the bucket compared to what Romney did in MA.
