Did Nancy Pelosi just violate campaign finance laws?

posted at 11:35 am on February 10, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

This is an interesting blip on the political radar, though likely one which will disappear down the memory hole in record time. CNN is reporting that, during remarks to reporters on the Hill, Nancy Pelosi suddenly tossed out an unscripted comment which could, in theory, land her in some hot water.

Did House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi inadvertently cross a legal line by asking for political contributions while on federal property?

At a Capitol Hill press conference Thursday, Pelosi was making the case for campaign finance reform and said Democrats will disclose donors to their political groups, even when the law doesn’t require it.

During her comments, she said “by the way we’re asking people to contribute to us if they want to elect more reformers to Congress so we can do away with super PACs – we can do away with secret contributions.”

So technically, asking for donations or doing any sort of fundraising on federal property is a pretty big Bozo No-No. But it’s also not something that frequently winds up being punished in a serious way for some reason. You may remember way back in 1997 that Al Gore was found to have made numerous fundraising phone calls to donors from his office in the White House. What happened to him? He had to write a check for $24.20 to cover the cost of the long distance calls.

So did Pelosi have some explanation for doing this? Of course!!

Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said she was not soliciting funds; she was merely discussing what she tells donors when she does.

Just … wow. So if I call up a hooker from the White House and tell her, “You know, if a girl like you showed up here with a pizza, what I’d probably do is give her some money and…” – then I guess I really wouldn’t be soliciting her services?

Well, maybe Nancy was just kidding around. You know what a sense of humor she has when it comes to campaign finance laws. In fact, here’s her latest video!

Violate the Law..

What are you smoking? Democrats can’t “violate the law” it doesn’t apply to them!

How many impeachable offenses has Barry committed? (Oops, no one even wants to start making a list. Homeland security and the FBI might show up.)

The law is meaningless, the Constitution is toilet paper.

slickwillie2001 on February 10, 2012 at 11:48 AM

Campaign reform is coming full circle now, we are close. There should be no limits and full disclosure on campaign donations, for federal offices.

It is unfair to blame the candidates for the message of the PACs, they can condemn a Pac’s until they are blue in the face, but they cannot control their own message.

Some PACs can do more harm than good for the candidate they love; I have personally seen well meaning groups support my candidate for a campaign, with a supporting social organization leaflet at churches that mis stated so badly that the office staff cringed when we heard it.

The Warren/Brown pact to dis avow negative ads from outside, just can’t work. People have the right to do what they want to with Citizen’s United.

I just think it is better to put the money in the hands of the candidate, and let them shape their own message.

And I think you should be able to give as much as you want to, and we have the technology now, to require that small donations be tracked. Then some of the money launderers could come out of hiding. We want to see who is supporting you.

Democrats like Pelosi are so incredibly corrupt that I don’t think she knows where the ethical lines are anymore. And, while on the subject there is clear documentation of Nancy Pelosi’s insider trading which amassed millions (along with personally lucrative earmarks). Having her talk about ethics is akin to listening to Bill Clinton discuss fidelity in marriage.

upinak on February 10, 2012 at 11:41 AM

According to GAWKER:

The Chinese micro-blogging service Weibo has exploded with rumors that new North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un was assassinated today at the North Korean embassy in Beijing. Twitter death rumors are totally cross-cultural.

Here’s one version of the rumor, cleaned up from the crappy Google translation:

According to reliable sources, North Korean leader [Kim Jong-Un was killed] in Beijing in February 10 2012, at 2 o’clock and 45 minutes. Unknown persons broke into his residence shot and were subsequently shot and killed by the bodyguard.

Official Internet Rule: Any (Chinese) Twitter post that begins with “according to reliable source” is almost certainly fake. But this hasn’t stopped Chinese netizens from speculating that the killing was a military coup, and posting blurry pictures purporting to show an unusual number of vehicles parked at the North Korean embassy. ChinaSMACK staff writer Joe Xu suggests reports of large number of cars at the embassy may have sparked the rumor. “Rumors like this pop up every other week,” he writes on Twitter.

We will only know Kim Jong-Un’s fate for sure when a new picture of him looking at things emerges.

Here’s the reason: No one cares.

Think about the implications of this. If you say you want people to donate, that is illegal if you said that on federal property. Yet, if you walk 30 paces to the left putting you onto the sidewalk, the very same words are now legal.
