Giffords aide to run for vacant House seat

posted at 3:05 pm on February 9, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

With the resignation of Gabby Giffords, a special election will be held in June to fill her seat for the rest of the current term. While nothing is settled yet, one person has stepped up to throw his hat in the ring, and it’s none other than one of Giffords’ aides who was also injured in the same shooting, Ron Barber.

Ron Barber, an aide to former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) who was wounded in the shooting spree that also injured Giffords, will run to replace her in the House.

Barber announced Thursday he would run in the special election to replace Giffords, who resigned from Congress last month to focus on her recovery from the shooting. Giffords’s husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, said he and Giffords were supporting Barber’s campaign.

“While there will never be anyone who can fill Congresswoman Giffords’ shoes, I look forward to continuing her legacy of putting problem-solving before politics,” Barber said in announcing his candidacy.

Thus far, Barber hasn’t said whether he has any intention of running for a full term of his own, assuming he wins, but The Hill is reporting that some state Democrats said off the record that he would probably not do so.

Doing some quick checking, I didn’t find much in the way of background information as to Barber’s qualifications or any previous elected positions he may have held. Of course, any lengthy term of service as an aide working closely with a member is not to be entirely discounted, since you can learn a great deal about the day to day job requirements that way and meet a lot of your potential constituents. A number of past and present members of Congress have that particular item on their resume.

Adding to that, in a district which could wind up being a close, toughly contested fight for the Democrats, the party no doubt hopes that Barber’s close association with Giffords and his history of having been injured in the now infamous shooting will carry some of her shine over to him and win him some sympathy votes.

ugh. Giffords barely won in 2010, by only 2000 votes. The only reason is Democrats cheated by propping up the libertarian Steve Stoltz on the ballot.

redistricting has made the district even harder to win…but I have hope for a Republican win.

p.s. even Giffords was pro 2nd Amendment.

Sorry but this woman is going to wipe the floor with him:

Martha McSally will announce her entrance into the Congressional District 8 race Thursday in Arizona.

Colonel Martha McSally was a pilot in the United States Air Force. She was the first American woman to fly in combat since the 1991 lifting of the prohibition of women in combat. McSally is also the first woman to command a USAF fighter squadron, the 354th Fighter Squadron (354 FS) based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

In 2001 Martha McSally successfully challenged the military policy that required US and UK servicewomen stationed in Saudi Arabia to wear the body-covering abaya when traveling off base in the country.

She’s a butt kicker.

I’ll be voting for Tea Party backed Jesse Kelly. No need for another Dem in Gabby’s place.

Why do we need any background information? We can elect a POTUS without any background information.

For a House seat , that’s just raaaaacist overkill!!! /

Yeah, like how she and her husband told Diane Sewer, er, Sawyer, that right-wing fanaticism led to her getting shot. Problem-solving before politics, uh-huh.

I hope people aren’t stupid enough to vote for a guy just because he worked for someone who got shot.

Then again this is America where American Idol and Dancing With The Stars are popular TV shows.

Conclusion: He wins 55%

NoDonkey on February 9, 2012 at 3:21 PM

In the name of decency her husband didn’t, for now.

He and her father still blame the TEA party and SP.

Still, the aide running makes illness/death exploitation disgusting. Always count on the left to be scum.

WOW, she would be wonderful. She and Rep. West could chat about gobs of things happening in dc. She would be against any repeal on the 2nd, which barber would go whole hogs on, IMO.

Get this lady in dc stat AZ voters!

So the Dems in my district put forward somoeone to whom they can ‘pass the torch’.

Republican wise there is Jesse Kelly, a bored rich kid who doesn’t even live in AZ (taxes are filed in TX I belive) who already has signs up (in direct violation of the law, not supposed to go up more that 60 days prior). Someone willing to break the law will never have my vote.

Of course there is Michael Antinori (sp?) who is already at the state level of government and can’t even get people who work with him to sign his petition to get on the ballet. He is just looking for a ‘power up’ to the next level. People who chase power are viewed with caution by me at all times, as you never really know their motivation.

And there is John Lervold, who is being deliberatly ignored by the media. Having had the pleasure of talking with him personally, I can tell you who will get my vote. Military veteran, fiscal conservative, very logical and can verbalize a point so that anyone can understand.

Just my two cents

Good grief what a resume. Not just a pilot, but commanded an A-10 squadron. Two masters degrees.

Might have to move to CD8 just so I can cast a vote for her.

love your extra crispy fried chicken.

you need to win the election so you’ll have the lifetime “seperate but equal medical care” that you get as a ruling elite.

otherwise you’ll be considerd too fat and worthless to get a physical within 6 months or the bariatic surgery it appears that you need badly.

He’s apparently the district director. Kind of a meh job, but it obviously gives him more contact with constituents than the DC staffers.

BuzzCrutcher on February 9, 2012 at 3:39 PM

Casey Anthony could win that seat if she’d been shot by a Tea Party activist.

CorporatePiggy on February 9, 2012 at 3:39 PM

The socialist media ALWAYS refers to giffords as a “moderate”. First, there is no such thing as a “moderate” d-cRAT socialist. Second, she voted the same as corrupt, crazy pelosi 96% of the time. Third, her voting record is almost identical to those of leftist nut-job dennis “KOOK”cinch and of buffoon-barney frank – two of the most extreme leftists in congress.

Also note that the Arizona d-cRAT socialist-dominated redistricting commission has changed CD8 (gifford’s current district) into what is now called CD2. The most significant change was to move some strongly conservative/Repub CD8 areas into CD1, which is already Repub-oriented, thus strengthening the d-cRAT socialist influence in CD2.

Nonetheless, I am confident that a repub challenger will win in CD2, thus giving Repubs yet another addition to their majority in the House. Tea Party-supported Jesse Kelly, who ran a very poor and weak campaign in 2010, nonetheless came within about 1% of winning, and will certainly run. Opposing Kelly in the Repub primary will be State Sen. Antenori, a less conservative Repub, among others.

A lot more than “one person” has stepped up to throw a hat in the ring. The McSally candidacy others mentioned is the 5th GOPer who will be running. I heard Martha McSally this morning on local talk radio about her run and was very impressed.

–3. (added at no charge) Martha McSally will clean your clock !

kim roy on February 9, 2012 at 5:13 PM

I can see the campaign slogan now.

Vote Barber 2012 -Because my Boss and I Got Shot!

He’ll win, because people are stupid that way, and the media encourages this type of stupid when there’s a Democrat who will benefit from it.

I still remember the Ashcroft-Carnahan senate race in Missouri (in 2000, I think?) The race was neck and neck most of the year leading up to the election, but as election day drew nearer, Ashcroft gradually pulled out to a 7-8 point lead in the polls. Then Carnahan gets killed in a plane crash around a month before the vote, and out of sympathy people vote for him and he wins by a few points or so.

Dumb@sses. It’s this type of crap (in addition to a whole lot of other stuff) that ends up getting us saddled with ~16 trillion in debt, not to mention unfunded future liabilities in the katrillion-bazillion range……
