Fantastic. China, Canada reach quick deals on oil, uranium

posted at 11:35 am on February 9, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

Last month we discussed the rather alarming news that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was planning a trip to China to discuss possible natural resources deals with the economic superpower. It seemed no coincidence that the trip was announced close on the heels of Barack Obama’s decision to kick the can down the road on the Keystone XL pipeline yet again. But at that time, I retained some hope that perhaps this was just a warning siren to Obama which would remind him that Canada had plenty of other options should we decide not to do business with them.

Apparently Harper hasn’t cared much for what he’s been hearing out of Washington and found a very willing ear across the Pacific because it seems that some deals have been struck already.

China and Canada declared Thursday that bilateral relations have reached “a new level” following a series of multibillion-dollar trade and business agreements to ship additional Canadian petroleum, uranium and other products to the Asian superpower.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Chinese leadership said Thursday the economic co-operation agreements — and billions of dollars in new private-sector deals — signed by the two countries over the past few days are unprecedented and will open the door to additional trade and investment.

Harper announced Thursday, following meetings with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Vice-Premier Li Keqiang, that the countries have struck an agreement that will allow Canadian uranium companies to “substantially increase exports to China.”

“We expect to see similar success stories in Canadian energy exports to China, once infrastructure is in place.”

Harper has said building pipelines to the West Coast — such as the proposed Northern Gateway oilsands pipeline and a separate one for liquefied natural gas — is a national priority as Canada looks to ship its vast resources to Asia.

This just gets better and better, doesn’t it? Not only do we have to keep an eye on the Canadians building a shorter pipeline to their western coast to ship all of their oil overseas, but now they’re going to aggressively up the ante on delivering uranium to the Chinese. Oh, I know… you probably think I’m being an old worry wort, right? I mean, China would only use the fuel for peaceful, energy production purposes and would never “lose track” of any of it, right?

Yet again we see that elections matter, and decisions coming from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. can have both immediate and long term effects not only here at home, but across the oceans as well. Harper’s deals wont be finalized until the Canadian legislature approves them, but they would be foolish indeed to turn it down with no assurances of a market in the U.S. There was never any doubt that Canada would pursue their own best economic and national interests and find a buyer for their resources. It was only a question of who would strike the right deal. And – again – I do not place any blame on Harper for this. He has to look out for Canada’s interests first, not ours. The fault here lies with the White House for playing politics with such a critical issue.

Stephen Harper is a good man and far more conservative than Obama. He has to look out for the best interests of his own country, even if Obama doesn’t do likewise, in favor of getting re-elected.

Yet again we see that elections matter,

Yes they do. Which is why we can’t elect Romney. He is as much of a green extremist as Obama.

Just days after his 2002 election, Mr. Romney hired Douglas Foy, one of the state’s most prominent environmental activists, and put him in charge of supervising four state agencies.

Gov. Mitt Romney and Douglas Foy at a March 2006 event.

Mr. Foy had initiated a lawsuit that led to the cleanup of Boston Harbor and had worked to protect fishing grounds and seashores. Once in the Romney administration, he served as the governor’s negotiator on a regional climate-change initiative and put emissions caps in place for coal-fired power plants.

With Mr. Foy by his side, Mr. Romney joined activists outside an aging, coal-fired plant in 2003 to show his commitment to the emissions caps. “I will not create jobs or hold jobs that kill people, and that plant, that plant kills people,” he said.

All done to keep a pathetic grasp on power, the health of the country you purportedly serve be damned.

China is busy in Africa. They can get all the uranium they want there.

This is actually good news for conservatives because trading with China will play well to the left in Canada. It should be difficult for the political opposition to run against Harper with this. Until Obama is gone, Harper is the only thing standing between us and the greens.

Oxymoron on February 9, 2012 at 11:48 AM

Good news = the Sandhills area of Nebraska will remain unaffected by the inevitable oils spills from this pipeline. Let’s face it, those inevitable oil spills would have poisoned the entire western half of the US and made it uninhabitable.

Better news = China has a great track record of environmental stewardship so anything that can be done to increase it’s ability to grow it’s economy via the use of existing forms of energy is a good thing for the world.

Help them build a pipeline to their coast, with Union jobs…so we can import oil in huge tankers from the Middle East, and also export our oil. It’s all so much cheaper for the American consumer. Under Stephen Harper, the Canadian economy has weathered the global recession with great success.

He has lowered business and capital taxes and focuses strongly on private small and medium businesses – which are very strong in Canada. He is weaning Canada away from its previous reliance on exporting Canadian goods to the US – and opened up trade agreements with numerous other countries. He is opening up the North of Canada to resource extraction and settlement – and, unlike Obama, stays out of social issues, which he leaves to the people, to the provinces, to the municipalities.

He’s economically conservative, reducing spending, reforming entitlements etc – His tactic is one-step at a time, with slow, cumulative changes.

The left, the socialist elite, are a strong voice in Canada, nurtured by years of socialism in Canada and are found among the academics, media and public service unions, but Harper is getting his agenda through, gradually and without fanfare. He’s probably the best Prime Minister Canada has ever had – and ha gained great respect around the world.

Obama is a non-entity in comparison, a non-entity who is doing great harm to the USA.

Why is it that nobody has done a comparison – from an Environmentally point of view – between bringing the Canadian Oil to Houston via the XL Pipeline and refining the oil there and bringing the Oil to Vancouver BC, freighting it in Tankers to China and refining it there?

Of course any project that gets rejected in one location can be started from scratch somewhere else – with no assurance that it’ll be approved there either. It’s just spin on the rejection to make it sound like it was something else. It’s like the chick who dumped you in high school then followed up by saying “we can still be friends, right?”

Despite self-appraisal that there might be four Presidents better than himself, Mr. Obama has acted stupidly time and time again. No matter what area of interest, Obama has been an epic failure. The only reason he is at D- and not a solid F is because the GOP has managed to save the man from his worst instincts.

I fear for this nation should this arrogant ignorant socialist be re-elected. An Obama who does not need to worry about re-election is dangerous for far more reasons than SCOTUS appointments. He would be able to run amok and shred the Constitution even more than the bastard has done to date. It would be the most evil and most anti-American administration in our history.
