CNN’s suspension of Roland Martin is a teachable moment

posted at 3:40 pm on February 9, 2012 by Howard Portnoy

Roland Martin, tweeted on Sunday, walked it back Monday, chastened on Tuesday, suspended on Wednesday…

That’s the short version of recent events in the life of the CNN commentator and author of Speak, Brother! A Black Man’s View of America.

The tale begins on Super Bowl Sunday, when Martin tweeted:

If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him!

and

Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) took umbrage, immediately tweeting back:

@rolandsmartin Advocates of gay bashing have no place at @CNN #SuperBowl #LGBT.

The organization followed up with a statement demanding Martin’s dismissal.

On Monday night Martin pled his case, writing that he “sincerely regret[ted] any offense” his tweets had occasioned and assured anyone who would listen that the target of his ridicule was the game of soccer. But the story refused to go away. By Wednesday CNN felt forced to take punitive action. In a statement network officials wrote:

Roland Martin’s tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland will not be appearing on our air for the time being.

Roland Martin, suspended on Wednesday…

Which brings us current. Today is Thursday, and the liberal blogosphere is still in a dither over the suspension, which after all is of a member of a diverse group over comments allegedly defaming another diverse group. Is a puzzlement. Whether there was true “homophobic” intent is almost beside the point. The Hollywood blog The Wrap, in its coverage of the story, links to an earlier article about GLAAD laughing off an anti-gay rant by comedian Tracy Morgan, which hints at a double standard.

Daily Caller blogger Jim Treacher stands back from the fray to observe that

maybe some good will come of [Martin’s suspension]. Maybe now he’ll think twice before he complains about ‘dog whistles.’ Maybe now he sees firsthand how unfair it is when other people decide what your motives are for you.

(In a postscript, Treacher quotes Big Journalism’s John Nolte, who quips, “Martin inadvertently stepped into a trap he probably didn’t know existed, and as a result he is now receiving an invaluable lesson about today’s politically-correct hierarchy, where gay trumps black.”)

What I want to know is when Roland Martin plans to issue an apology to the International Soccer League.

When you make a living appealing to the stupid, that are today’s CNN viewers, you have to accept the code of speech that comes with that.

Good luck with that career.

So how does Obama keep getting a pass for his “evolving” views on gay marriage? No one on the right would be allowed to use that excuse to avoid taking a stand on the issue.

Bitter Clinger on February 9, 2012 at 3:48 PM

Hmmm, not really sure what he said that was offensive but then us orca’s can’t hear the dog whistles.

Since when do gays own David Beckham? He does look like a predatory homosexual but he is married with 4 kids and what looks kinda like a female wife. Maybe. In the right light. With filters.

And since when is making fun of people in pink suits some kind of hate crime?

As for soccer, they can suck it.

CorporatePiggy on February 9, 2012 at 3:49 PM

Some day, when SH the F, EOTWAWKI comes a-knocking, and law and order crumble down, many a gay will regret having ramming their sexual preferences down common folks’ collective throat. Payback is a very, very politically incorrect creature.

Archivarix on February 9, 2012 at 3:51 PM

Does CNN realize they are a joke? Suspending him for a tweet about underwear? Imagine if GLAAD heard what is said in the Christian community about gay people– why, they would demand the church apologize and build a “tolerance” room in their chapels!

Roland Martin for president!!!

Seriously, would they rather have this or Eddie Long.

abobo on February 9, 2012 at 3:52 PM

My guess is Martin craves big media access and being a national voice during an election year more than he does any sort of ability to completely speak his mind, even if it does annoy other PC groups on the left, and even if he went over to MSNBC, he’d still be on GLAAD’s “watch list”, and he new network is even more beholden to the liberal activists groups than CNN.

Martin will cave in public and issue a mea culpa, even if he voices slightly angrier, non-Tweeted opinions to his friends in private. And he’ll go right back to doing the same things to people on the right that GLAAD just did to him.

jon1979 on February 9, 2012 at 3:52 PM

Roland Martin could have his job back in a heartbeat by coming out of the closet in a tearful admission that it was self-hate and an unwillingness to face the truth of his own sexuality that motivated him to say those hurtful things.

Never ceases to amaze me how quickly the CNN overlords are to react or overreact, how they cave, who they cave to, who they suspend or outright can, and what on earth criteria they use for any of it, which changes from hour to hour so how are we supposed to grasp their message anyway?

stukinIL4now on February 9, 2012 at 4:38 PM

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy. I will always remember Roland Martin’s reaction to Sarah Palin’s 2008 RNC speech as the moment I realized that the media was not only out to get Republicans, but that they didn’t care who knew it anymore. He was so visibly angry, sputtering at the affront to the anointed one that she represented. I had never seen a journalist behave on the air before that moment (excepting talk show hosts like Olbermann, of course).

It was as if at that moment, he had snapped and no longer cared to even hold up even the pretense of objectivity.

What a vile man.
