Biden on the new contraception rule: I’m determined to see a compromise here

posted at 9:25 pm on February 9, 2012 by Allahpundit

You make the call. Is this Biden signaling a climbdown by the administration (again), or is this Biden trying to force a climbdown by publicly breaking with Obama? Remember, according to ABC, he was one of the most passionate opponents of the new rule inside the White House. He knows he’s handing the GOP a talking point here by suggesting that the conscience exemption as it stands is insufficient. If he’s not doing this at Obama’s behest then he’s making life difficult for him, especially after The One reportedly doubled down on the rule at yesterday’s Democratic retreat.

“I am determined to see that this gets worked out, and I believe we can work it out,” Biden told WLW radio in Cincinnati today. “But the frustration … is real.”…

“When HHS put out its ruling on this issue, it said that it’s going to take a year to work out whatever difficulties the Catholic church has, to make sure we do not force the Catholic church into a position where they are having to do something that they fundamentally think is inconsistent with their religious beliefs. That is under way,” he explained.

“There’s going to be a significant attempt to work this out, and there’s time to do that. And as a practicing Catholic, you know, I am of the view that this can be worked out and should be worked out and I think the president, I know the president, feels the same way,” Biden said.

Does he? He’d better tell Barbara Boxer and Pelosi, then, because I think they’re under a different impression. Actually, maybe this is just Biden’s hamfisted attempt to play good cop to O’s bad cop for undecided voters. If you’re opposed to the rule, here’s a big bright neon reminder that people close to Obama share your concerns. Granted, they’re powerless to do anything about it, but they care. That counts for something, no? Second look at impotent panders?

Here’s Paul Ryan on with Laura Ingraham this morning laying into HHS over the rule and spinning it out into a broader critique of ObamaCare and IPAB. When it comes to government bureaucrats making health-care decisions on your behalf, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

Joe misses the point. The exemption for religious-affiliated organizations was the compromise. If we had our way, this wouldn’t be required of any organization, religious or not.

I’d also point out that, without a subsequent amendment, you don’t get to arrange a “compromise” on the 1st amendment.

Allah, how many times do you have to watch this white house manufacture the debate on it’s terms?

Oh sure, almost every time they dangle the nugget and let the wingers chomp, froth, and regurgitate.

But hasn’t a smart guy like you realized yet that each and every time Obama has made the GOP look unreasonable while making them give away at least half the store.

Obama the reasonable scores again.

I would have thought the constant whining here every time the wingers have been ‘sold out’ by the leadership, might have given you a clue.

John Hayward (doctor Zero) weighs in as eloquently as usual.

And adds a new twist:

Remember when the Republican presidential candidates were subjected to a bizarre grilling by George Stephanopolous, former Clinton flack transformed into ABC news personality, about whether or not they supported the rights of state governments to forbid contraceptives? Stephanopolous was asking the wrong question. It is resistance to the distribution of birth control that has been officially forbidden, and not at the state level.

Was Stephanopolous ahead of the curve with his question, looking for “gotcha” quotes to bring in whenever the mandate finally surfaced?

I would suppose they could do an administrative loophole and only allow in network ‘contraceptive’ services (all others would be out of network and not covered). They teach a methods class and perhaps coverage of the cost of attending that class and any related items (i.e. the thermometer and chart papers) would be covered. Thereby satisfying the coverage clause…

I haven’t read the specifics of the law so I doubt very much it would work. My preference is that they take it to court and get the stupid thing overturned.

davidk on February 9, 2012 at 10:57 PM

This decision by the Obama administration is all of a piece. It represents the continued audacity of thumbing its nose at the Constitution and Congress. It represents the purely cynically political in promising “free” support of licentiousness and gussying it up as “health” care.

It is not free; it is paid for with tax dollars. Forcing citizens to go against their consciences to underwrite the distribution of contraceptives or abortifacients calls for civil disobedience.

There is no question either that the Obama adminstration is using this mandate to undermine institutions that have contributed to civil society in order to impose the will of the State as superior. Furthermore, it is a distraction from all of the other economic and national security policies that the administration is actively pursuing.

What’s the next step? Mandatory vasectomies or tubectomies to limit family size for the “common good”? It was done in India. Look what China imposes.

How Joe Biden ever received a law degree is beyond my ken. He is a laughable buffoon. As a Cathoic, he is a scandal just like Pelosi and Kerry and a bunch of the other public officials who place their political power over their personal consciences.

And why Rep. Paul Ryan doesn’t have a bigger microphone to make his points is a sad reflection of what we have allowed our society and our media to become. Ryan probably speaks the values of the majority of Americans, who right now are bewildered over how fast the Obama administration and its Marxist enablers are destroying our country.

I wonder… are we lucky that Ø chose to shaft the Catholics first? Because they are large and powerful enough to have more clout than smaller denominations. And they have more experience at taking stands. My church is Methodist, and has been invaded and watered down by libs to the point that I don’t know if the Methodist conferences could take a stand about anything. Maybe I’m being unfair to them…

We’re all in line for it, one way or another. Might be gay marriage or abortion or some other issue for a given denomination, but we’re all targets.

I think that Barack Obama knows exactly what he is doing. He knows that the RCC will not submit to any law that causes it to directly violate church teaching, and he also knows who will be blamed by the majority of Americans when already under-served and impoverished communities suffer. It will not be him; it will not be Democrats; it will be the Catholic Church. The Church will be blamed for abandoning the poor and the needy in favor of its oppressive patriarchal, antediluvian, anti-woman, etc. etc. etc. you-get-the-idea dogma.

But I agree with you that he is a fool to take on the Church. If the gates of hell will not prevail against it, neither will he.

It’s more than just Catholics and their values that are being trampled on. No employer at all should be forced to offer contraceptive coverage of any kind if they don’t want to, regardless of their religious beliefs or lack thereof. When did contraception become a right or entitlement other than bcuz the leftistlibtard feminazis stand up and shriek about it indignantly every chance they get. If they want it, they can pay for it themselves–and quit demanding funding for it from the rest of us!

Joe Biden – pro-abortion Catholic. Just like Crazy Aunt Nancy.

A (rhetorical) question that Rush has posed many times:

“How do you compromise with evil?”

bofh on February 9, 2012 at 11:08 PM

Worth repeating, and for the record…you don’t. You crush it and send it back to the darkness from whence it came.

swinia sutki on February 10, 2012 at 7:02 AM

so this is how they’re gonna do it… Biden on the way out and Hillary on the way in.

There is no compromise here, Joe. Liberals have absolutely no value systems and are pure Godless, hedonists. Don’t fall for this garbage people.

“I’d like to give a shout-out to my new best friend, the Pope! Stand up there Pope. Let the folks see you!”

Mr. Biden, as a practicing Catholic which part of your faith and belief in church doctrine do you want to compromise on? The next time there is a mandate from your president regarding church doctrine which part of that do you want to compromise on? Who knows, after a few more mandates, you won’t even have to practice anymore.

Here’s a compromise, we win and you lose.

Very fair.

NoDonkey on February 10, 2012 at 9:50 AM

Obama violates the Constitution, and Biden wants a ‘compromise’ from both sides?! What a LOSER!

Very well said. The sad thing is, though the gates of hell will not prevail, things are going to get very unpleasant for the members of the Church, as they have many times before. So many have poo-pood the notion of persecution in the US. Oh, it can’t happen here! But it is coming. This is just a hint at the beginning.

This man, this administration, can not have another four years. If he will try this now, in an election year…*shudder*

This is Joe’s excuse to not be on the ticket.

SouthernGent on February 9, 2012 at 9:35 PM

Hmmm, possibly.

Another scenario to consider is that our Kenyan Communist Muslim-In-Chief is so tone deaf, arrogant and petulant that he will refuse to back down on this issue. Then Greezy Joe Biden will make yet another gaffe and find himself bounced out of the US Naval Observatory (the VP’s Crib) on his rear.

Just you watch – B Hussein Obama will then pick the repugnantly repellent Valerie Jarrett as his VP running mate.

How about some real numbers? Abortionists have killed over 1,000,000 babies a year since roe vs wade, are we only going to kill 500,000 babies a year unless there is an emergency and they need to kill a few thousand more and any democrat appointed to the bench and not elected can declare an emergency. What is the right number of babies to slaughter each year. Is this what we are expected to compromise on? Will there be racial quotas to insure minorities get their share of the rationed abortions? If some races do not want their quota of abortions, must they offer some babies to fill their quota or will somebody like sebilious scientifically select some of their babies for slaughter? Is reducing the number of evil babies sacrificed to the socialist god from over a million to 500,000 a progressive policy?
