Susan G. Komen pro-life VP resigns after Planned Parenthood flap

posted at 12:45 pm on February 7, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Karen Handel, the pro-life vice president of the Susan G. Komen foundation who was rumored to have heavily influenced the organization’s original decision to cut funding to Planned Parenthood, resigned today, shortly after Komen essentially reversed its decision and resumed its partnership with PP. The Washington Times reports:

Karen Handel, the charity’s vice president for public policy, told Komen officials that she supported the move to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood. She said the discussion started before she arrived at the organization and was approved at the highest levels of the charity.

“I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it,” Handel said in her letter. “I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen’s future and the women we serve.”

Handel had supported a decision that Komen announced last week to exclude Planned Parenthood, which provides a range of women’s health care services including abortions, from future grants for breast-cancer screenings because it was under government investigation. The charity cited a probe launched by a Florida congressman at the urging of anti-abortion groups.

The breast cancer charity reversed course after its decision created a three-day firestorm of criticism. Members of Congress and Komen affiliates accused the group’s national leadership of bending to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen’s founder and CEO, Nancy Brinker, denied the decision was driven by pressure from anti-abortion groups.

Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards lapped up praise from MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell for her “diplomatic” handling of Komen’s original announcement. O’Donnell:

Cecile Richards, you now have my nomination for America’s ambassador to the United Nations. Your artful diplomacy and how you have handled yourself in this relationship with your former partner who is now again your partner, the Komen foundation, has been something to behold. Thank you very much for joining me tonight.

O’Donnell also related predictions from various sources that Komen will not be able to survive as a foundation now because too many donors were outraged that Komen would even think of abandoning Planned Parenthood.

He might be right: Donations to Komen were up 100 percent after the news broke that the organization was defunding Planned Parenthood, but the window of opportunity for pro-life donors to show their support was very short-lived. Conscientious objectors to Komen’s grants to Planned Parenthood won’t donate now — and it seems supporters of Planned Parenthood aren’t above holding a grudge for Komen’s momentary consideration of their abandonment. In the end, then, Planned Parenthood might still kill off Komen as a source of funding … by killing off Komen. PP officials should be so proud. Severely wounding a major women’s health organization like Komen certainly demonstrates concern for women’s health.

How sad. After Komen announced its original decision, I wrote that the decoupling of Susan G. Komen and Planned Parenthood proved that “women’s health” and “abortion rights” are not synonymous. The two aren’t the same, but, apparently, Planned Parenthood has so great a grip on the media that, in media presentations to the public, “women’s health” and “abortion rights” will remain interchangeable.

I don’t see how Komen doesn’t take a huge financial hit over the next few years. All they did was piss everyone off. They would have been better off sticking to their first decision once made.

Let there be no doubt that PP still believes in most (if not all) of Sanger’s visions.

Komen’s involvement with the PP abortion mill is appalling. I’m glad that this incident has lifted the rock so Komen’s well-intentioned supporters can see what’s under it.

I hope Komen dies a rapid death for its inexplicable political choices.

Cicero43 on February 7, 2012 at 12:53 PM

So they are accused of being pressured by prolife groups to drop Planned Parent Hood, but it is okay to pressure them to reverse their decision. Only liberals!!! Planned Parenthood is an abortion mill!! They do not council women, just take the money and kill the unborn.

The part of the story that gets me it this sense of entitlement from the baby killers at PP. How dare Komen not fund them? They rallied pro-murderers and feminists (as well as the MSM) to their faction and did a very good job of mischaracterizing the relationship between Komen and the baby killing whores of PP.

Make no mistake, Komen blew this on the PR front. Abortion may be a 50/50 issue in this nation but fighting cancer has got to be far more like a 70/30 issue in favor. Komen should have come out with an explanation that they were moving in another direction other than giving grants to PP for referals for a service that PP doesn’t even perform.

Komen lost my support when I found out they donated to PP. Then I supported them for a brief second as they pulled the funding. Now they don’t exist as far as I’m concerned. Spineless and pathetic. There are other organizations that stay true to their mission and don’t support baby murderers.

Correct: Abortion is not health care.

PP does NOT do mammograms at ANY PP facility. They refer 100% to other women’s clinics which do on site mammograms. And for that PP needs $600,000/yr from Komen??

Komen does make direct charitable donations to thousands of other women’s clinics that do actual on site and mobile mammograms all across the U.S.

FYI: during the previous 4 years, PP raked in $300 MILLION dollars in revenue from abortions. But Komen is the bad guy in all of this??

Komen will change it’s name and restructure it’s organization. It will continue with it’s same policies and their supporters will be none the wiser.

Norky on February 7, 2012 at 12:58 PM

I can’t help but think this whole incident will have a very negative effect on Komen’s future fundraising efforts. Those donors that condemned the original decision to cut funding to PP are not likely to come rushing back to Komen now, given the hateful rhetoric heaped on Komen when the original decision was announced, and those that supported the original decision are unlikely to donate to Komen, even if they did so in the past, since the incident just highlighted the fact that money going to Komen also goes to support abortions instead of fighting cancer, a fact some people might not have been aware of before.

mbs on February 7, 2012 at 12:58 PM

I fear you are correct. I never knew that my donations were going to PP which is my fault for not researching, but now I will think twice before donating there and instead give it to an actual cancer center. Unfortunate, but true. Had Komen stood up and claimed that this was the right thing to do for their charity I would have applauded them and never thought twice about donating again.

I can’t watch the main stream media anymore, I am so disgusted by the double standard. All I heard on the radio was that the Komen VP was a Republican against abortion and that was the reason, not once did I hear thatabout the investigations into PP and what they were for, all it said was that they were “politically motivated”. All I kept thinking was of those videos when they were covering for underage prostitution, etc. and no mention of that anywhere.

It scares me how screwed up this country is.

momof2 on February 7, 2012 at 12:59 PM

Just in case anyone needs the research – Abortion has a direct causal relationship to breast cancer.

Komen’s support for PP’s murder industry, which coincidentally also causes breast cancer – just reeks. “Here, let’s do something to increase breast cancer, so we can solicit even more donations to fight breast cancer!” What a pit of corruption.

Harbingeing on February 7, 2012 at 12:59 PM

Saw this coming the very first day Komen said they were breaking ranks with PP and it was known that Handel was VP and more importantly, pro-life.

Good for Mrs. Handel.

That said, Komen has thoroughly sullied their “brand”. Both sides of the ideological spectrum will be shy of them now.

ButterflyDragon on February 7, 2012 at 1:00 PM

i am bringing this from the other thread

10% of every woman walking through the door will have an abortion. 30% of them will receive the morning after pill. 841 out of 3 million will receive an adoption refferal.

11 million services rendered on 5 million visits by 3 million patients.

When you take into account that nearly 100% of people walking through the door will be tested for an STD, it sort of takes away the power of saying 35% of services rendered are for checking for an STD.

The percentages of “services provided” is very misleading at face value.

You have to look at what it really means.

But I”ll give you the exact same example I gave someone else.

Using PP’s method for providing percentage of services rendered, if 20 women went to a clinic for an abortion and all 20 had the abortion, BUT, they also had a breast exam, HIV test and an STD test, abortion would be listed as only 25% of services provided.

The casual observer would believe that of those 20 women, only 5 had an abortion because PP claimed it was only 25% of services provided.

That is very misleading. The methodology is meant to obfuscate the real impact of abortion in their offices.

ButterflyDragon on February 7, 2012 at 12:35 PM

ok, its a good point. but still, even if a good number of patients go there for abortion, and the doctor reminds the patient that they should do also cancer exams and end up doing it, then PP is helping on komen on its cancer fighting objectives.
pehaps its what is really unfortunate is that some women are only reminded of their reproductive health when they are facing undesired pregnancies.

This whole flap is why I will not send my donation funds to secular organizations. Besides, when faced with the decision to keep a poor African child alive for another month or subsidize a 50 year old American woman to have a mammogram, the choice is fairly easy.

Komen has basically shot itself in the head with this fiasco and could be defunct shortly.

I have always supported Komen in the past, but will not give them another dime. How can you say your for the eradication of breast cancer when the money goes to both abortion and contraception, both linked to increased breast cancer rates?

nathor on February 7, 2012 at 1:02 PM

Absolutely!

And you know the cause of that?

It’s our victicrat society that is perpetually pushed by liberals and Democrats. The total lack of personal responsibility.

People are being taught that everyone is a victim and it’s always someone else’s fault that something has gone bad. To right ever perceived “unfairness”.

Our society has gone down the crapper because of that mentality.

Our kids need to be taught that life isn’t fair and you need to buck up and take responsibility for your actions.

sure, but for an organization like komen, your argument above is meaningless. they have to be pragmatic and fight cancer with the reality at hand and i dont see then as evil if they do.

Personal responsibility is a very liberating idea. Liberals just don’t understand it. I think it’s a symptom of their mental disorder. All liberals are either narcissists or codependents of a narcissist. Every action they take can be seen as such. Personal responsibility to them is like holy water to a vampire.

I see it like this, when a woman has an undesired pregnancy because, as you said, “if some drunk hits on a woman in a bar and tells her she has nice t*ts”, then she will go to in panic to PP. they might get a morning pill and an maybe an abortion from their visit, but, also, its a unique chance to inform and provide them with contraception and remind her of other health risk like cervix and breast cancer and even do those exams on the spot.
i know you prolifers would prefer that women would never have the option to abort. but that irrelevant to the fact that Komen can use PP visits to spread its cancer awareness among women.

nathor on February 7, 2012 at 1:12 PM

There is no evidence that Komen uses PP to “remind/check” women for cancer issues.

I’m going to speculate that with the numbers PP has released, they have a standard regimen they go through dependent upon the reason for the initial contact with PP.

The vast majority of women that visit PP are under 40. There has been recent debate about whether mammograms should begin at 40 or 50, but nearly everyone agrees mammograms below the age of 40 is useless.

So, there’s not a lot of mammograms or mammogram referrals going on in PP clinics. There might be breast exams going on, and that’s great if there are. But you know what, a good PSA on television can reach many more people about that.

All I know is Komen has screwed themselves. And PP in their desire to demonize their “enemy” done just the opposite of what they “claim” to do: care about women’s health.

Komen will lose many donations now. From the pro-life people who never even knew Komen money was going to PP prior to this and from the pro-choice folks who feel Komen is now the enemy.

So, in their bid to make sure everyone was compliant, PP has done more harm to women’s health than the media will ever report.

What a mess. Textbook example of how not to run a non-profit organization. They made huge tactical and strategic mistakes; it’s hard to imagine this organization became so successful with such inept people running it. Tactically, it looked like the left hand did not know what the right hand was doing, and they completely bungled the PR – potentially fatal for a non-profit that depends on donations to survive. Strategically, they have alienated a segment of their supporters who feel passionately about this issue, and they did it for no good reason. Can’t tell you how many conservative women I’ve heard over the last week say that they had no idea SGK supported PP, and that they would no longer contribute. They may very well lose support from churches and other religious organizations that are pro-life and thus cannot contribute to them, not to mention people who simply do not like to contribute to incompetent organizations (see my earlier comment on tactical mistakes). And it was all self-inflicted. Unbelievable.

Considering PP did 329,445 abortions last year. I’m sure at least 50% of those babies killed were female. So PP kills 164,723 women a year.

Good going Komen in supporting an institution that kills over 4 times as many women that die from breast cancer each year.

Conservative4Ever on February 7, 2012 at 1:56 PM

Nice to know PP finally got rid of this anti woman, anti civil liberty, big government ideologue.

HotAirLib on February 7, 2012 at 1:57 PM

Good riddance. Nobody will dare to cut funding to the PP creeps for another decade after this.

Social Conservatives should look at people like Mitch Daniels or Christ Christie to see how it’s done. They’re an over-emotional bunch who loves the “fight” part of it – especially Southern Evangelicals – so they end up with flops like this on their hands.

Side note: that PPRI Poll on Obamacare’s Mandates and Freedom of Conscience is a sign of how pathetic has been the Hierarchy’s exercise of the Magisterium for the past few decades. I hope this functions as an alert call to the Bishops.

In any case, things, while bad, aren’t as horrible from an electoral perspective as the headline states:

A majority of Catholics (52%) say that religiously affiliated colleges and hospitals should have to provide coverage that includes contraception.
Among Catholic voters, however, only 45% support this requirement, while 52% oppose it.

Catholics voted for Obama by a 10% margin. If this issue limits Obama to 50% of the Catholic vote, it has the potential to seriously hurt him in a state like PA.

joana on February 7, 2012 at 1:57 PM

I am glad Ms. Handel is not only talking the talk…. There are, indeed, other cancer fighting programs worthy of our donations! The Komen Foundation will NEVER get a penny from me! The other article on this site about 52% of Catholics supporting the provision of birth control and abortion funding in “regular” health care – probably the same 52% who never show up in church, never put a dime in the collection plate, never participate in any of the parish work, and have so many problems with doctrine. I believe they just don’t have a say – probably good, upstanding Catholics like Dick Durbin, Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, Kathleen Sebelius, do I need to go on?
I am a Catholic woman, trying very hard to live my faith (which is not always easy)! I am also a business owner who offers health insurance coverage to her employees. I am offended about this as well – why should I offer something that I don’t agree with? I make choices about suppliers we sell, but I cannot make a choice about what benefits to offer my employees? PLEASE…..

Komen lost my support when I found out they donated to PP.

tyketto on February 7, 2012 at 12:57 PM

Best thing to come out of this is that not many knew they did prior to this snafu – now everyone knows.

tdpwells on February 7, 2012 at 1:59 PM

Komen Foundation has signed up with an organization that advocates the murder of women in the womb.

Pro-abort factions disrupt prayer services, intimidate the faithful and now have made it a crime to follow your religious convictions.

My mother and sister died from breast cancer and I have supported the Komen Foundation for many years.

Not another dime to the Komen Foundation.

Except for the people in camps, but they were irrelevant, right?

NoDonkey on February 7, 2012 at 2:00 PM

Komen was played from the start, and equally weak on disclosure.
Komen’s future and eventual loss of revenue will cause them to wake up in a year and realize they were used. For a good liberal cause.

FlaMurph on February 7, 2012 at 2:01 PM

Catholics voted for Obama by a 10% margin.

Actual practicing Catholics did not support Obama by anywhere near tthat.

Those who never attend Mass other than a random Christmas or Easter are lumped into the “Catholic” vote for the purposes of the MFM’s rigged surveys.

The facts are that Abortion increases the risk of Breast Cancer.

How can you be an organization fighting breast cancer yet helping an organization that promotes the increase to the risk of breast cancer?

I need this answered, from the those Liberals, how what is the logic behind this?

There are plenty of other organizations to put your dollars for breast exams and/or mammograms. PP is not for women’s health, this is a ruse to get money, they are an abortion mill. If they are given money for one of their so called services, this frees up funds for abortions.

I will not participate in a Komen event or give money.

I am a Breast Cancer Survivor 12 years now. I know that the abortion I had at 16 put me at risk. I made a mistake as a teenager and paid for it, yes, but is this statistic be provided to those coming to PP? I doubt it and that is another reason to make sure the funds stop.

Lapsed Catholics are still Catholics, but you’re correct, practicing Catholics voted for McCain. Only by a 50%-49% margin though.

Lapsed Catholics are still Catholics

According to the people who consider Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry and Ted Kennedy Catholics, yes.

Not according to the Catholic Church.

Whose word actually matters?

NoDonkey on February 7, 2012 at 2:14 PM

There is no evidence that Komen uses PP to “remind/check” women for cancer issues.

if as you say, 40% of the visits are related to undesired pregnancies, then its quite probable that cancer checks and referrals that go on are a secondary service that is reminded to patients. the STD’s checks will probably be the other main driver of visits. its conjecture. i have no proof of this but i could not find this statistic of visit reason and services given per visit.

I’m going to speculate that with the numbers PP has released, they have a standard regimen they go through dependent upon the reason for the initial contact with PP.

The vast majority of women that visit PP are under 40. There has been recent debate about whether mammograms should begin at 40 or 50, but nearly everyone agrees mammograms below the age of 40 is useless.

and the other cancers?

So, there’s not a lot of mammograms or mammogram referrals going on in PP clinics. There might be breast exams going on, and that’s great if there are. But you know what, a good PSA on television can reach many more people about that.

All I know is Komen has screwed themselves. And PP in their desire to demonize their “enemy” done just the opposite of what they “claim” to do: care about women’s health.

komen really had a PR disaster here. and unfortunately so. then ended up being placed in the middle of the culture wars. all sides damaged komen and the cancer cause.

Komen will lose many donations now. From the pro-life people who never even knew Komen money was going to PP prior to this and from the pro-choice folks who feel Komen is now the enemy.

i think pro choices will forgive komen now.

So, in their bid to make sure everyone was compliant, PPprolifers has done more harm to women’s health than the media will ever report.

So for arguments sake its “Unconstitutional” to prevent same sex couples from Marrying, so why isn’t it
“unconstitutional” to prevent someone from having multiple wives/husbands?

Heh. Don’t for a moment think that legal argument isn’t next. Some are already are already arguing for it and getting ready for the ensuing legal battle. It’s probably only waiting for same sex marriage to set in place.

Brinker, in an interview with MSNBC last week, said Handel didn’t have a significant role in the policy change.

Brinker stopped by MSNBC to talk to Andrea Mitchell on Thursday 2/2/12

I love how Mitchell tries to insinuate that Handel may be the cause of this.

That depends on whether they were vaccinating the guards or the prisoners. In this case, PP is providing services to the women as cover in the same way that Hamas is a charitable organization. PP from Sanger on down is about cleansing the population.
