Lawyers, guns and (Obama’s) money

I think the word you were looking for is… awkward.

Obama campaign returns $200,000 donation from fugitive’s family

Brothers of Pepe Cardona, who fled drug and fraud charges in the US in 1994, began raising money for Obama last year

Barack Obama’s re-election campaign is returning more than $200,000 in donations from the family of a fugitive casino magnate linked to violence and corruption in Mexico who has been seeking a pardon.

Brothers Carlos and Alberto Rojas Cardona, who live and work in Chicago, began raising money for the Obama campaign and the Democratic national committee last year, the New York Times reported, adding that neither had a history of making political donations.

Their brother Juan José Rojas Cardona, also known as Pepe Cardona, jumped bail in Iowa in 1994 and disappeared, fleeing drug and fraud charges in the US, the paper said.

Cardona appears to be tied up not only in drug smuggling allegations, but bribing public officials in Mexico and the untimely inhuming of one of his “colleagues” in the trade. His brothers not only raised money for Obama, but were trying to grease the skids with the former chairman of the Iowa Democratic party with an eye toward landing a pardon. (The article goes on to note that they did not succeed in securing the desired papers.)

Jim Geraghty connects the dots and ties Cardona to the drug cartels in Mexico and all of the violence associated with them, bringing us full circle back to Fast and Furious.

At least these guys are courteous enough to tip the administration that supplies their friends with guns so well…

For the record, there are plenty of times where opponents of politicians in both parties can play some gotcha games when it comes to political donations. By the time you make it up to the presidential level, you’ve got tens or hundreds of thousands of checks to go through, and if there’s one from some shady character that slips through the nets, your opponents are playing a bit of dirty pool in making hay out of it. But that’s not the case with these brothers. We’re talking about major league bundlers here who rose up to the top of the ranks of Obama’s donors. If the President’s campaign staff didn’t know about any of this, they are incompetent at best. And if they did know and just hoped nobody would notice, this crosses over into criminal stupidity territory… or worse.

Well now, this puts “Fast and Furious” in yet another light. This Obama administration is just full of texture and nuance.

Return it? They sound like a perfect match for the Obamas, surprise Barry and Michelle don’t match the donation.

hillsoftx on February 7, 2012 at 9:25 AM

The only reason any politician returns donations is when they feel taking the money would hurt them personally.

Someone did the math and said to the brothers, “Not this year. Wait until 2016 and then donate to the President Baroque El Downgrade ‘Library Golf Resort’.

DId Obama return the money donated by Bernardine Dohrn and Bill Ayers?! Oh, of course not; they’re just ordinary, decent citizens, after all, right?! Well, why not; Tucker Carlson is sitting down to dinner with them–along with a host of other ultimately sick people who are posing as ordinary, decent human beings, and giving Ayers and Dohrn the chance to OPINE while they serve them. What is wrong with this picture?!

God, Almighty, WHY are ordinary decent people agreeing to sit down with these evil people at dinner? Tucker Carlson wins the AWARD FOR STUPID, OFFENSIVE JUVENILE PRANKS; the result is allowing Ayers and Dohrn to pose as ordinary human beings, and to rehabilitate themselves in the public eye, while mocking ordinary , decent human beings.

Do you think trivializing what these people did is CLEVER?!

Jesus, Joseph & Mary, I despair for my country, when it becomes more important to be CIVIL to evil people, than it is to hold a principled position about their evil. Anything is acceptable, so long as it’s for a good cause. It’s a symptom of our degradation, a sick society.

An 8 month pregnant woman was sliced open, and her blood was smeared in “kill the pigs.” Bernardine Dohrn cheered that, and Bill Ayers, who maimed people, bombed government buildings and said decades later that he should have done more.

How do you think the victims feel about so-called JOURNALISTS trivializing it?

It’s offensive in the EXTREME.

And it’s not like the Cardona brothers are unaware of the tale of Marc Rich. Wonder if Eric Holder’s gotten any emails from them.

J_Crater on February 7, 2012 at 10:55 AM

Obama’s basic ingrained dishonesty was widely discussed at HA during the 2008 campaign. The consensus as I recall was that they would surely bring dishonesty and double dealing to the Presidency and this is proving true. Obama’s people call it ‘politics’ but it’s deeper than that, much deeper. It’s a total lack of basic ethics. Wondering why so many don’t see that or,see it and ignore.

If they point it out they admit that they got duped. So to save face, people just go on pretending it’s not there.

It’s dishonesty in its purest form.

The Failed President is both a liar, loser, and is destroying America. Secret Service personnel have stated he is a dishonest person and his wife hates white people. He is a very dangerous man and ignores the law in general, the will of the American people, Congress, and the Constitution.

There are no longer massive adoring crowds to deceive. For the first time in Barack Obama’s life, he is accountable. He has repeatedly shown that he cannot deal with, and will never be able to shoulder responsibility, as he is at his core a self-absorbed man, and a very dishonest human being.

Obama has never stood for individualism, capitalism, or liberty. The citizens of our country naively gave the reins of power to a tyrant. The White House has been marginalized and he has proven himself to be the most inept president in modern history. He is symbolic of a man who has downgraded the White House, the Constitution, human life, foreign policy, race relations, and America herself.

His resignation from office would be a great first step toward economic recovery. The majority of Americans are sick of his condescension, his policies, his racist bigotry, and his incompetence. Obama is “the most disastrous president in our history.”

This is the most corrupt, incompetent, dangerous tyrannical administration in American history.

Brushjumper on February 7, 2012 at 12:51 PM

Wonderful. We have an administration whose actions can easily be put in the category of incompetent or corrupt. You just never know. Maybe, since we find out about a lot of it, it just means that they are corrupt and incompetent about covering it up.

Oleta on February 7, 2012 at 1:15 PM

On second thought, can we ever verify that the $200,000 campaign check is ever cashed?

Oleta on February 7, 2012 at 1:22 PM

At least we can be assured that all of Mitt Romney’s bundlers are of impeccable character. Just look at the list…. Oh wait, we can’t. Romney keeps his (non-lobbyist) bundlers secret.

Drew Lowell on February 7, 2012 at 2:43 PM

Some might assume that the Cardona family’s new-found interest in donating to the Obama campaign may have to do with wanting him to issue a pardon if he is reelected. It is worth noting that Obama’s Attorney General, Eric Holder, orchestrated Bill Clinton’s last minute pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich—in exchange for generous donations to the Clinton Presidential Library from Rich’s wife, Denise. Rich fled the United States owing $48 million in income taxes, ran illegal oil deals with Iran during the 1979-1980 U.S. embassy hostage crisis, and was charged with 51 counts of fraud.

Then-Deputy Attorney Holder was also instrumental in the pardon of members of Fuerzas Arnadas de Liberacion Nacional, or FALN, a terrorist group responsible for more than 120 bomb attacks in the United States. The bomb targets included New York City’s historic Fraunces Tavern, where three were killed—one was decapitated by the explosion.
