Quotes of the day

posted at 10:49 pm on February 6, 2012 by Allahpundit

“Romney, himself, weighed in during an interview with WCCO radio in Minneapolis, saying of Santorum: ‘His policies are, in my view, those of many Republicans in Congress who went along with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling, to allowing earmarks and to growing the size of federal government to a level that is frankly choking off the capacity of our economy to grow at the rate it should.’

“‘I think his approach was not effective and, frankly, I happen to believe if we’re going to change Washington we can’t just keep on sending the same people there in different chairs.’”

***

“(1) It simply is untrue that Romney is not winning conservatives. In fact, a super-majority of Romney voters are in fact conservative and he has won more conservatives than any other candidate. The most conservative voters are not the bulk of his coalition, for sure, but overall his support is coming from the right side of the political spectrum.

“(2) The Romney coalition in 2012 is more moderate than the Romney 2008 coalition was. In most of the early contests – at least outside the South – Romney secured the support of very conservative voters four years ago. That is not the case this time around, not nearly to the same extent. Even so, his coalition in 2012 is a hybrid of the McCain ’08 and Romney ’08 vote.

“(3) This is a virtually unbeatable coalition, if he can maintain it. Romney has basically situated himself exactly in the middle of the GOP electorate: a plurality of his voters are somewhat conservative, with the remaining sampling from the moderates and the very conservatives. To defeat this coalition, an opponent would have to either steal some of his very conservative voters or cobble together a coalition that includes the far left and the far right of the electorate. Either would be a very difficult task to accomplish.”

***

“‘The Tea Party movement is dead. It’s gone,’ says Chris Littleton, the cofounder of the Ohio Liberty Council, a statewide coalition of Tea Party groups in Ohio. ‘I think largely the Tea Party is irrelevant in the primaries. They aren’t passionate about any of the candidates, and if they are passionate, they’re for Ron Paul.’…

“But Meckler and Littleton both rightly make the point that while the Tea Parties may not be dictating who the candidate is this year, they certainly have dictated the issues the candidates are talking about and what they are saying, particularly in the area of fiscal restraint, free-market capitalism, and the virtues of the Tea Party’s favorite historical document, the U.S. Constitution.

“In the ultimate compliment in presidential politics, the GOP field seems to be in a daily contest to impress Tea Party voters. You’re cutting spending? I’ll cut it more. You’re stopping earmarks? I’ve never even voted for one!…

“And what if Romney is elected but does not deliver on his promises, as so many Tea Partiers fear?

“That’s simple to predict, says Littleton. ‘All hell will break loose.’”

***

“‘I think what the tea party people should be asking ourselves [is] … ‘Listen, we have all this energy, all these ideas, we’ve mobilized so many people, and we produce Mitt Romney,” he said. ‘Why couldn’t they produce a leader? Why couldn’t they really change the party? If Romney wins, the head of the Republican Party — the three most important people in Washington — will be Mitch McConnell, John Boehner and Mitt Romney. That’s the Republican main street establishment. The tea party will have a pretty limited effect.’”

***

“We’ve killed off the Rockefeller Republicans. In 2008 we had one candidate who was pro-abortion, one candidate who opposed Clinton’s impeachment, we had one candidate who wanted to shut down Guantanamo, voted against Bush’s tax cuts, called waterboarding torture, oh, and that’s the one we ran.

“We have killed off Rockefeller Republicans. Basically all of them have conservative positions now. I think Romney is appealing. He’s gentlemanly. I think that’s what you need from looking at how Reagan ran in 1980.”

Mittens Romney will be the death of the GOP. What’s worse he’s going to give us 4 more years of Obama, not to mention another quarter century of an activist liberal court. Sigh…

i feel that this election is being won by a rich guy, using boat loads of cash from his rich friends to buy votes and in the end he will have a policy that favors the same rich buddies.

Or we seriously put up a libertarian candidate that shrinks government so that lobbyists and billionares lose power, or, maybe, its better to go full class warfare than to put up with this travesty of democracy.

yes, this means voting democrat! which is even worse than SMOD!

seriously, if small government ideology seems to have died (for me it dies with romney), then we have to agree to the regulation of the political process so that $$$ does not have a excessive influence on it. because worse than big government is big government controlled by big money.

If Jailbreak was a poster provocateur, and posed as an insufferable Romney supporter, the intent is to outrage[...]

galtani on February 7, 2012 at 12:54 AM

You handful of Romney-haters aren’t the smartest bunch. It obviously pains you all to no end to see enthusiastic Romney supporters like Jailbreak gloat about their candidate’s steady stream of successes and unabashedly tease sad cases like the lot of you. Typically, you pathetic Romney-haters like to throw out lame threats about how, supposedly, by posting gloating comments and harshly criticizing losers like Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry, these commenters are only turning people away from their preferred candidate. Ha! As if you deluded haters cared about driving support away from Romney (who, by the way, is the best candidate by far and is the one who will beat Obama). The fact is that NO ONE is going to be less inclined to vote for a candidate because some of their supporters are passionate and not afraid to show it. You hear me? So, I suggest you get good and used to the gloating from Romney supporters, because Romney has a lot more wins coming up… including a big one in November.

I’ve seen several idiotic comments from the same couple of haters desperately attacking Romney supporters. The attacks are pretty pathetic and weak, to be honest. But the point is that you haters go right along with it. You are only “offended” when the Romney supporters (who, just so you know, vastly outnumber you sad haters… but most have lives and can’t be posting on news blogs 24/7) talk back to you. All I have to say to you is: too darn bad!

You Romney-haters, who, despite your deluded sense of importance, are miniscule in number and are the kind of weak followers who take Mark Levin’s word as gospel and can’t think for yourselves. People like you haters actually thought Sarah Palin was going to run for president… and you actually believed she could win! Ha! You people say you’re for a so-called “True Conservative”, yet you jump from losers like corrupt Freddie Mac lobbyist Newt Gingrich to another unelectable also-ran like the unvetted career politician Mr. Earmark Rick Santorum.

I don’t mean to be rude, but the truth is that the smart conservatives are for Romney. We all know it.

Asserting that everyone who agrees with you is “smart” and that everyone who disagrees is “pathetic,” “weak,” and a “loser” serves as evidence of your own limited mental capacity. Not to mention a maturity level dwarfed by your shoe size.

Here’s a clue, bluegill – you aren’t even one of the smartest people on this board, let alone a “smart conservative.” You’re just another schlub posting in the comments section of a blog. Have a nice day.

DRayRaven on February 7, 2012 at 5:44 AM

Ann has jumped the shark, no more book sales for you.

bluegill- What does hate have to do with pointing out a weak canidate? I do strongly dislike Mittens as the GOP front man (I’m sure he is a nice guy outside of politics, I just think the guy is weak tea as the front runner)

The guy has a poor track record winning elections and refuses to refute Rommneycare. How is he any better than Obama? Just because he has an R next to his name?

What is he going to do in a debate when Obama askes him why Obamacare is bad if it is modeled off Rommneycare?

Make the sale for me, I’m not buying it. I’ll hold my nose and vote for him if he is the last man standing…. but he will just run things into the ground too, just at a slower pace.

LOL – it is really really funny to see a rather small but vocal number of HA commenters carry around the pitchforks and torches.
They are not a real conservative – screw em they are just trying to sell books.
Malkin, Coulter, Krauthammer, and a host of others thrown under the big “look at me I speak for conservatives” bus. Last two standing are Sean “could I be anymore corny and slavish to certain guests” Hannity and Rush “yes despite my personal life I am the embodiment of all things conservative – bow to me” Limbaugh.

By Nov you will have thrown them under the bus as well.

Earmark Rick Santorum.

your lack of self awareness is astonishing in it’s depth.

It’s clear you think you’re not only smarterest thanz everyone else’s…. but you’re so arrogant, you have defined yourself as the end all and be all of political thought on this blog. I’m sure Ed and Allah are duly impressed.. by a guy who named himself after a throwaway fish we give our kids canepoles to catch.

Look, we don’t care that you shout “Can you hear me!”

your claim to fame isn’t orginal thinking, it’s playing tag along to the heavy hitters you agree with.. you’re predictably doing what you always do, being a snarky insulting troll when your guy lost, and proclaiming total victory when he finally won a couple. Romney may well be the nominee.. the problem for you, is that taking a principled stand, that Romney is the LEAST capable conservative, heh, running goes right over your head..

you began your poorly thought out rant by puffing out your small chest and telling us how you have every right to gloat insult, and try to bully everyone you disagree with… because you care more about following the media choice, than what he actually says..

then,..

proceed to do exactly what you accuse every non Romney voter of doing..

The plain fact is, people have legitemate problems with Romney’s past positions, and his supposed electability,.. referrence that the MSM has started already with the disconnected rich guy meme who hates poor people… but to you, it’s being a “hater” to point that out..

Your skin is so thin you whine pitiously about being dissed, but are one of the first to get out your manure shovel and paint others with an extremely broad brush… conservatives are the majority, here, unless you missed the last Hotair internal pol, Romney has no majority support here, in fact Paul does about as well,.. with the libertarians here.

the worst though, is that you are blissfully unaware of the fact, you ain’t the brightest bulb here, and can only be counted on to pile on after others start the ball rolling for you.

I may disagree with alot of posters here, but they are far from stupid, and it takes a dimbulb view to believe that about someone based entirely on the fact they don’t tongue bathe your annointed candidate.

can you hear me?

“And what if Romney is elected but does not deliver on his promises, as so many Tea Partiers fear?

“That’s simple to predict, says Littleton. ‘All hell will break loose.’”

Yes, and yes, the Tea Party protests will suddenly become again the main topic, and with a Romney in the White House, the idiot Maher’s and Couric’s, the William’s and Matthew’s who couldn’t pile enough hate on the Tea Party voters, will… suddenly..

start to like them very very much…

Not for any reason like principles, but solely because they are going after a republican..

and that’s the only reason..

It would show the Tea Party’s are telling the truth when they say it’s based on principles, and it’ll totally flush the MSM credibility, because it’ll be clear, their whining about fears of nviolence and diviciveness, were all a partisan ploy to stifle debate when a democrat was in the big chair.

Oh, and any man who brags about his “pro-choice” stance in order to kiss up to these witches is a wuss and a not a real man.

bluegill on February 4, 2012 at 7:03 AM

When Republican presidential candidates were asked recently to cite their biggest mistake, Romney replied: “Probably from a political standpoint and a personal standpoint, the greatest mistake was when I first ran for office, being deeply opposed to abortion but saying, ‘I support the current law,’ which was pro-choice and effectively a pro-choice position. That was just wrong.”

The truth is, when Romney ran for office in Massachusetts he went far beyond saying, “I support the current law.”

He begged voters to accept him as an embracer of abortion rights. “I believe that abortion should be safe and legal,” he said. He staked his credentials on his mother, Lenore. He said she ran for the Senate in 1970 on an abortion-rights platform, inspired by the death of her son-in-law’s teenage sister from an illegal abortion. “My mother and my family have been committed to the belief that we can believe as we want, but we will not force our beliefs on others on that matter. And you will not see me wavering on that,” he said. Source

He’s gentlemanly. I think that’s what you need from looking at how Reagan ran in 1980.”

In other words, “Statesmanlike”. The problem we is that there are some who want Neutron Newt to call Obama naughty school yard names and triple dog dare him to debates. And then when that doesn’t work, they celebrate it when he whines like a little baby and then praise him after he threatens to take his ball and go home.

The failure of some in our society to value respectful disagreement from our elected officials is why both sides are universally despised. Reagan used snark sparingly and in your face rhetoric only when it was necessary. A Statesman knows that the over use of hyperbolic rhetoric makes it less effective. Neutron Newt overused the vicious attacks on the media. It was especially unwise because he attacked those who, because of the rules, could not respond. Romney also overused the attacks on Gingrich and his loss of support in the polls is the evidence of that.

Grown ups understand that Obama has very high personal ratings and calling him names is a losing strategy. Attacking his policies as misguided or reckless is a much more effective tactic as it shows that his opponent is a reasonable adult who can take on the leaders of the world and represent America as a reasonable effective leader.

What better way to get people to either not show up on election day, or drive them to vote for Obama out of spite, than to act like they do? Not only driving away long time registered HA users, but making the blog so chaotic that those readers on the ‘outside’ stop reading too.

Flora Duh on February 7, 2012 at 7:57 AM

mark81150 on February 7, 2012 at 7:39 AM

Don’t try to create a straw man argument to deflect the substance of the comment.

Bluegill’s comment is the result of listening to months of the Romney haters personal attacks on Romney supporters. It is a defense of his/her beliefs in the equal and opposite manner in which he/she was attacked.

The comment was an exact description of how the Romney haters behave.

1) The haters are miniscule in numbers.
2) They do not do their own research and parrot the talking points they hear from others.
3) They did insist Palin was going to run and personally attacked anyone who disagreed. They even resorted to attacking each other when Palin finally said she wasn’t going to run. The real zealots viciously attacked the same people they were friends with the previous day.
4) They did ignore the polling that showed Palin was universally disliked by the entire spectrum of political thought.
5) And those same people did jump from candidate to candidate after viciously excoriating that candidate the day before as a despicable RINO and it would be the end of the country if that person was the nominee.

So yes, wise conservative Americans are moving toward Romney. The context of that wisdom is that we must nominate the most conservative candidate who can beat Obama. All the election data shows Romney has breached that 20% that most thought he could not surpass. His has beaten Gingrich in every demographic and is building a head of steam to win the nomination and the only person left to challenge him is Santorum. And he has yet to be vetted.

And finally, if those 5 items do not apply to you, then why are you acting as if they are? And if they are representative of you, why are you upset? Wouldn’t you be proud of your behavior?

First off, rational adults don’t judge a candidate by those who support that candidate. If that were the case, they would be easily manipulated away from supporting certain candidates.

And I have never spammed this site. You have.

I don’t think it’s working. All they have done is make me feel more certain I am correct in my thinking. Dream on. I’ve never been a Romney supporter and it has nothing to do with you, jailbreak or bluegill. And I’ve said numerous times I will vote for Romney if he’s the nominee, because Obama has proven over the past 3 years what he’s capable of and what he would do to the country with another term.

And although I don’t particularly care for everything Romney’s done in his political career, I care about my grandchildren’s future more. Were it not for them I probably would sit home and laugh my ass off at people like you when Romney got his handed to him by Obama.

Perhaps Ann Coulter and her “ilk” are nostalgic for a rerun of the 1980 presidential election but with different results this time. The republican establishment was brutal against Ronald Reagan and pushed the only “electable” candidate, Gerald Ford. Just imagining the consequences of a second term Jimmy Carter term is horrible enough. But now, we’re being served the same BS and they’re pushing another Gerald Ford-like candidate but hoping for different results(?). We need bold colors and not pastels.

O/T
I enjoy reading your comments. Don’t hold back if you feel a snark attack coming on :) I spend too much time on Hot Air. I am a genealogist and family historian, I spend a lot of time with online research. My Fairfax cousins are in the process of a dedication for William Fairfax Sr., he’s going to get his SAR “Sons Of The American Revolution) dedication at Bacon Race Church/Cemetery, near Hoadley in Prince William Co.,Virginia. He died in 1793 Occoquan, Virginia. 219 years later my generation of his descendants are the ones that are seeing he get’s his Rev War Service memorial. It’s a wonderful ceremony they will be in period dress for the dedication and I understand that there will also be a group from the War of 1812 attending.

I think Hot Air commenters are a little ahead of the curve when it comes to conservative internet blogs…but that’s just me, and I love snark so it’s Hot Air, and Ace of Spades for me.

Dr Evil on February 7, 2012 at 9:34 AM

Don’t try to create a straw man argument to deflect the substance of the comment.

I created a strawman, by quoting Bluegill at length?

Your defintion of strawman is different than any I’ve ever seen.

And finally, if those 5 items do not apply to you, then why are you acting as if they are? And if they are representative of you, why are you upset? Wouldn’t you be proud of your behavior?

csdeven on February 7, 2012 at 8:00 AM

Oh please,… Bluegill, jailbreak and others routinely use Romney Haters to refer to any voter who expresses anger or disgust with Romney. I’ve already noted before, if Romney wins, I’ll support him because there simply is no other option. But I also changed to supporting Santorum, because 1. he’s not a Romney style neo-progressive, and 2. I just happen to like the guy. Newt grew old fast, because of his behavior.

But that’s our point, and mine when addressing Bluegill.

You complain bitterly about people being mean to your camp, while engaging in exactly that kind of behavior yourselves. I don’t care that Romney fans are so delicate and fragile.. but I detest whining followed by hypocrisy, when Bluegill then asserted he and every Romney fan had the absolute right to offend as many people as they like.. because, sniff…. they was right..

and even one else was stupid.

and you aren’t seriously saying a majority of conservatives support Mitt, even Coulter won’t say that.. he has at the moment, a slight majority of republican support, not the same thing. Romney loses the Hotair pols, so you can’t say your opinion is the majority one here. That too is the point..

You and Bluegill are a minority opinion here, but demand everyone genuflect when you type in another snark laden shovel full about how much you hate X Y Z..

You really don’t get, that you cannot get respect if you never show any.
