Quotes of the day

posted at 10:49 pm on February 6, 2012 by Allahpundit

“Romney, himself, weighed in during an interview with WCCO radio in Minneapolis, saying of Santorum: ‘His policies are, in my view, those of many Republicans in Congress who went along with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling, to allowing earmarks and to growing the size of federal government to a level that is frankly choking off the capacity of our economy to grow at the rate it should.’

“‘I think his approach was not effective and, frankly, I happen to believe if we’re going to change Washington we can’t just keep on sending the same people there in different chairs.’”

***

“(1) It simply is untrue that Romney is not winning conservatives. In fact, a super-majority of Romney voters are in fact conservative and he has won more conservatives than any other candidate. The most conservative voters are not the bulk of his coalition, for sure, but overall his support is coming from the right side of the political spectrum.

“(2) The Romney coalition in 2012 is more moderate than the Romney 2008 coalition was. In most of the early contests – at least outside the South – Romney secured the support of very conservative voters four years ago. That is not the case this time around, not nearly to the same extent. Even so, his coalition in 2012 is a hybrid of the McCain ’08 and Romney ’08 vote.

“(3) This is a virtually unbeatable coalition, if he can maintain it. Romney has basically situated himself exactly in the middle of the GOP electorate: a plurality of his voters are somewhat conservative, with the remaining sampling from the moderates and the very conservatives. To defeat this coalition, an opponent would have to either steal some of his very conservative voters or cobble together a coalition that includes the far left and the far right of the electorate. Either would be a very difficult task to accomplish.”

***

“‘The Tea Party movement is dead. It’s gone,’ says Chris Littleton, the cofounder of the Ohio Liberty Council, a statewide coalition of Tea Party groups in Ohio. ‘I think largely the Tea Party is irrelevant in the primaries. They aren’t passionate about any of the candidates, and if they are passionate, they’re for Ron Paul.’…

“But Meckler and Littleton both rightly make the point that while the Tea Parties may not be dictating who the candidate is this year, they certainly have dictated the issues the candidates are talking about and what they are saying, particularly in the area of fiscal restraint, free-market capitalism, and the virtues of the Tea Party’s favorite historical document, the U.S. Constitution.

“In the ultimate compliment in presidential politics, the GOP field seems to be in a daily contest to impress Tea Party voters. You’re cutting spending? I’ll cut it more. You’re stopping earmarks? I’ve never even voted for one!…

“And what if Romney is elected but does not deliver on his promises, as so many Tea Partiers fear?

“That’s simple to predict, says Littleton. ‘All hell will break loose.’”

***

“‘I think what the tea party people should be asking ourselves [is] … ‘Listen, we have all this energy, all these ideas, we’ve mobilized so many people, and we produce Mitt Romney,” he said. ‘Why couldn’t they produce a leader? Why couldn’t they really change the party? If Romney wins, the head of the Republican Party — the three most important people in Washington — will be Mitch McConnell, John Boehner and Mitt Romney. That’s the Republican main street establishment. The tea party will have a pretty limited effect.’”

***

“We’ve killed off the Rockefeller Republicans. In 2008 we had one candidate who was pro-abortion, one candidate who opposed Clinton’s impeachment, we had one candidate who wanted to shut down Guantanamo, voted against Bush’s tax cuts, called waterboarding torture, oh, and that’s the one we ran.

“We have killed off Rockefeller Republicans. Basically all of them have conservative positions now. I think Romney is appealing. He’s gentlemanly. I think that’s what you need from looking at how Reagan ran in 1980.”

That I agree with. It’s the one thing that gives me hope that Mittens, Boehner, and McConnell wouldn’t simply settle for “managing the decline”. They know the base will turn out in November because Obama has got to go. But what happens when they’re running the show and they fail to deliver? It’ll be a repeat of 2006 with the base staying home and power being handed right back to the Dems. And 2 years later another Obama-type radical will emerge from the left and win the Presidency. Hell, it wouldn’t shock if it ended up being Obama himself.

All she does is attack people and make outrageous statements to sell books.

“I think Romney is appealing. He’s gentlemanly. I think that’s what you need from looking at how Reagan ran in 1980.”

Reagan also won by courting conservative voters, which is what Romney is failing to do by a wide margin. Comparing Mitt to Reagan is like comparing apples to lawn furniture, and that’s being charitable.

Did Ann suffer a brain injury or stroke recently? This is inexplicable.

I’m so sorry to hear of your family’s loss.

Cindy Munford on February 6, 2012 at 11:21 PM

Yes. Makes you feel faintly sick all the time. Where have you been? I was wondering about you last night!

cynccook on February 6, 2012 at 11:23 PM

Thanks, guys. Yes, silvernana, it was that night. She never woke up. The doctor said that it was probably a pulmonary embolism. She had had a procedure 2 days earlier to remove fluid from her chest. All things considered, I’m glad that it wasn’t the long slow decline we were all expecting.

cynccook on February 6, 2012 at 11:16 PM

I’m sorry. Hugs coming your way.

“And what if Romney is elected but does not deliver on his promises, as so many Tea Partiers fear?

“That’s simple to predict, says Littleton. ‘All hell will break loose.’”

I wonder if an incumbent Romney would be swayed by the TP in any way when “all hell breaks loose.” I might add, this speculation wouldn’t be necessary with someone who was consistently conservative.

Did you say…fish-heads…

That is not what I was referring too. I was being literal.

*Looks around and doesn’t see wife*..Ann has a nice set of..nevermind..:)

Dire Straits on February 6, 2012 at 11:24 PM

That really isnt very nice. Why are people here so personal. Just because you disagree with someone doesnt mean the person has a brain defect. Typical right wing blog hate-fest.

Jailbreak on February 6, 2012 at 11:22 PM

The only possible reasonable explanation for you is that you are, in fact, Ann Coulter. That would at least make sense. The Romney obsession, defending Ann Coulter’s obvious anorexia, etc.

cynccook on February 6, 2012 at 11:24 PM

“We’ve killed off the Rockefeller Republicans.”

Uuuummmmmmmmmm…

… No.

The political elite ruling class RINOs are hedging their bets…

… they contribute to both sides, just in case.

Obowma for the Dems…

… and Mittens for the GOP.

So far it is working, if you follow the story line and believe “the polls”…

… but what keeps them up at night is the slight possibility that Newt might win not ony the nomination, but the actual election as well.

Newt has clearly stated what he will do to change this Country, change Washington, and what it will take…

… Metaphorically, it will be like holding the elites in both parties down by force, and ripping their teeth out with pliers.

And make no mistake, Newt will do it…

THAT is why he can not be allowed to win at all costs, enter Ann Coulter.

THAT is why he has to win…

Very salty crew for sure..:)

Dire Straits on February 6, 2012 at 11:25 PM

I don’t know if the Tea Party is diminished or not but the candidates who chose to run is hardly their fault. I can understand the split among the candidates or even the lack of enthusiasm for any of them but they should never concede the need for spending cuts and rolling back the deficit. It’s the one thing I think we can universally raise hell about.

Cindy Munford on February 6, 2012 at 11:25 PM

Most people would consider me to be cute and fit.
Ann Coulter is an unhealthy skeleton.
I’ve had an eating disorder-so I know one when I see one.

annoyinglittletwerp on February 6, 2012 at 11:16 PM

Not to be mean, but this discussion doesn’t even START unless you have a six-pack.

RavingLunatic on February 6, 2012 at 11:25 PM

Sometimes it is a blessing for them not having to suffer so much any more, as bad as that sounds.

silvernana on February 6, 2012 at 11:20 PM

No, you’re completely right. And I’m glad the stupid cancer didn’t get to win.

You are not very nice.

Thanks for outing yourself as libtard. That explains everything.

Gosh, thanks JPete. Thanks everyone. You are all so nice you are going to make me cry.

cynccook on February 6, 2012 at 11:26 PM

Well, since David Brooks, Kathleen Parker, and Peggy Noonan did such a wonderful job for us 4 years ago..

Let’s let Ann Coulter have a go at it.

Media establishment….85% Liberal
Cornell Graduate…….80% Liberal
Husband and 3 Kids…..60% Liberal…/s
Lawyer……………..70% Liberal

Sounds like a dyed in the wool conservative to me.

How about vote your gut instinct (with some background voting record research) and tell these “pundits” to STFU.
