Komen donations up 100% in the past two days; Update: Komen to continue funding some Planned Parenthood chapters?

posted at 8:10 pm on February 2, 2012 by Allahpundit

It’s not just them. Planned Parenthood’s donations are up too. As of yesterday, they’d raised $400,000 since Komen’s decision to withhold future grants was announced — more than half the amount they received from Komen last year — and today Nanny Bloomberg promised them another $250,000.

Says Megan McArdle, “If only every culture war issue resulted in both sides vindictively donating to charity.”

“Our donations are up 100 percent in the past two days. With all of the emotion around these issues — which we understand, we get emotional too, we do this every single day of our lives,” Brinker said, explaining that they do not make decisions to be popular, they make them to fight cancer…

While pro-choicers believe the decision to sever the relationship was based in politics, Komen continues to argue that the decision was based on internal policy changes which dictate more stringent criteria for grants — which Planned Parenthood does not meet, including the fact that Planned Parenthood is under congressional investigation and does not offer on-site screening, having to refer patients for mammograms, treatment and diagnosis elsewhere.

“We regret that these new policies have impacted some longstanding grantees, such as Planned Parenthood, but want to be absolutely clear that our grant-making decisions are not about politics,” Komen said in a statement Wednesday.

Below you’ll find Brinker’s none-too-convincing video statement from the Komen website assuring donors that the new policy wasn’t specifically crafted with Planned Parenthood in mind. The left is already having fun with that, wondering if Komen will also cut its millions of dollars in funding to Penn State because they’re the subject of a federal investigation related to Jerry Sandusky. I’m guessing no, as the House investigation of PP has to do specifically with the sort of systemic institutional financial impropriety (i.e. spending federal funds on abortion) that a grantor would/should be especially concerned about, but expect lots of complaining in the “why cut off PP if not XYZ?” variety going forward.

Speaking of which: Do we know for a fact just how much of Komen’s annual grant Planned Parenthood spends on breast-cancer screening specifically? John McCormack at the Standard alleges that PP is flatly lying when it claims it provides mammograms, pointing to this audio compiled by Lila Rose last year in her chats with PP personnel. Could be, but at least one PP chapter explicitly advertises mammograms on its website; it may be that others provide basic breast-cancer screening and then refer patients to doctors for full mammograms if necessary. Either way, it doesn’t much matter to the pro-life argument (which, of course, Komen claims it isn’t adopting). Money is fungible, so any dollar that’s spent on health care frees up a dollar elsewhere that PP can spend on abortions. That doesn’t seem to bother the feds, but apparently it bothers Komen management.

Update: Climbdown? Komen is claiming now that it’s not that the congressional investigation that gave them pause about PP but rather the fact that PP wasn’t doing enough mammograms on site.

So why did Planned Parenthood lose funding? Brinker says it has to do with the fact that they do not provide mammograms to women, but only provide mammogram referrals. “It was nothing they were doing wrong,” she explained. “We have decided not to fund, whereever possible, pass-through grants. We were giving them money, they were sending women out for mammograms. What we would like to have are clinics where we can directly fund mammograms.”

Komen had initially funded 19 Planned Parenthood affiliates and, in the wake of new funding policies, will only continue funding three of those chapters. The three that will continue to receive funds are in Northern Colorado, Southern California and Waco, Tex., because “they are the only provider” of breast health services in the areas they serve, Brinker said.

The Waco chapter is the one I linked above as advertising mammograms on site. So much for the fungibility theory.

I won’t give to Komen this year as I usually do. I’ll give to the American Cancer Society instead.

Why? Not because of their falling out with PP. Don’t care. It’s because Komen is being dishonest about why they made the change. Makes me wonder about the entire organization.

Someone was posting links last night to the Komen message boards with the crying lefties. Someone went back and resurrected a thread from a couple months ago when the donations to PP from Komen were becoming more common knowledge: Religious conservatives were shutting their wallets.

Funding an organization that doesn’t even largely do mammograms, and mostly serves a demographic less likely to catch breast cancer was probably adjudged not to be worth the lost donations.

Sekhmet on February 2, 2012 at 8:20 PM

A mammogram is a mammogram. Why does it necessarily have to come from PP? I’m sure there’s plenty of hospitals that could use that money to get the mammograms done. It’s simply good sense to avoid toxic connections, especially a despicable outfit like Margaret Sanger’s batch of infanticidal maniacs.

Donate, donate, donate. If Komen is able to withstand the onslaught, others will follow. Kudos to someone who finally had the guts to prick the PP balloon.

Bloomberg’s faux outrage is ludicrous. What does he think Komen is going to do with the funds it withholds from PP, redecorate and order takeout? That money will go to other organizations that offer breast cancer screening and mammograms. Not one women will lose her life over this decision, but a life or two may be saved.

I just love that self-description liberals and baby murderers use – “Pro Choice.”

“Choice” of what? Coke or Pepsi? Fries or hashbrowns? However, no choice on “chizburger,” of course.

I think maybe they are referring to the Constitutional right to choose “Vacuum out the brains of the baby after stabbing a pair of surgical scissors into his/her skull?” or “Burn the baby to death with saline solution and then cut it up when it is dragged from the birth canal?” Decisions, decisions.

By this reasoning, Charles Manson was “Pro Choice.” Charlie’s choice, your death.

The Nazis at Auschwitz were “Pro Choice,” too. “Zyklon B or straight Cyanide, Jew? You zee, vee haf choices here for you Juden.”

Folks are true to their founder, Margaret Sanger – eliminate the “weeds” from the “Garden of Life.”

I’m not understanding this post. Of course abortion is legal, I don’t think we’re going to change that. The rationale here is that, if that’s your “choice”, then why should anyone else pay for it? I wouldn’t want my tax dollars or donations to go for you to have a nose job, or boob job. If that’s what you want, put a jar on the bar with a “T*ts for Tammy” sign, and people will decide to help you or not. Abortion is not what most of us consider “birth control”. I may have you all wrong, but not seeing what fat white guys have to do with it, since, for the most part, it’s not fat white babies getting the “ax”.

If I believed my government was sanctioning the murder of a million innocents every year, I don’t think I’d be able to live in this country. How do you square that circle?

Because you seem to see abortion as something women must be stopped from doing what they want for the sake of the baby.

As if making it illegal will stop them, or at least if it doesn’t, they’d deserve the consequences of an illegal abortion. Whatever they may be.

But back to my abused sister.

Her man decided the baby would cut into his drug money and beat her until she had an abortion.

“Do you honestly believe that abortion is morally equivalent to murder? If you do, do you think America is a better or more noble nation than Iran, where abortion is illegal unless the mother’s life is in danger?”

It is homicide but when the mother’s physical life is in danger there is a self defense argument which makes a good case that it is justified. I believe everyone has a right to self defense if they choose it.

I didn’t say I agree with pro-choice anti-life republicans, just trying to help the kid out a little. He came in here like gangbusters ready to take on every conservative here, and as expected, he got smacked down, as he needed to be.

He’s learned from his mistake and now at least attempts to approach subjects he may not agree with in a manner that shows he’s willing to listen, and maybe even change his stance in due time.

I thought we wanted to bring people to “our side”. Horace’s outright implying the he’s lying because he says he’s a pro-life democrat certainly won’t help.

Of course since Horace no longer has Rick Perry to ridicule, he’s turned into a big grump who attacks anyone who doesn’t think like he thinks they should.

Komen had initially funded 19 Planned Parenthood affiliates and, in the wake of new funding policies, will only continue funding three of those chapters.

Sorta puts the kibosh on the hysterics from the other side claiming politics played a role, doesn’t it?

This is a non-issue being ginned up by the abortionist crowd. Komen can fund whomever they want, or change their criteria for awarding funds at any point. They don’t have to give money to PP or provide a reason why they’re not.

changer1701 on February 2, 2012 at 9:08 PM

I knew this would happen and it did, it didn’t take long for Komen to succumb to pressure from PP and will continue funding some PP chapters.

Pretty sad really. Feel bad for all the people that were duped and donated to them.

Komen only donated to Planned Parenthood for 2 years
Planned Parenthood’s bitter campaign against Komen–aided by left-liberal activists and media–is analogous to a protection racket: Nice charity you’ve got there. It’d be a shame if anything happened to it. The message to other Planned Parenthood donors is that if they don’t play nice and keep coughing up the cash, they’ll get the Komen treatment. There’s one crucial difference, however. In a real-life protection racket, the victim never pays voluntarily. The threat is present from the get-go. By contrast, Komen presumably was not under any duress when it made its grants–and it could have avoided all this nasty publicity by never dealing with Planned Parenthood in the first place. Thus smart prospective donors–especially ones that are apolitical, like Komen–are getting the message that supporting Planned Parenthood is a trap. Give once, and you will give again–or else you will pay.

Masterful sentence structure. And quite original and creative, too.

You now use English gooder.
