Jim Moran: Allen West isn’t representative of African-Americans

posted at 5:25 pm on February 1, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Mediaite, does Moran mean West isn’t representative of blacks generally or that he wasn’t representative of them specifically when he said Obama, Pelosi, and Reid should “get the hell out of the United States of America”? He’s on the right network and the right show for cheap racial demagoguery aimed at a minority conservative, but I’m thrown by what he says at the beginning in claiming that West isn’t representative of the GOP either. That’s an unusual concession coming from a Democrat in attack mode, especially when he’s got Sunshine here egging him on.

Ah well. After that first flush of ambiguity, he settles into a standard racially-tinged “you’re selling out your roots” jag against West:

He just seems clueless now that he has climbed aboard ship. He’s climbed this ladder of opportunity that was constructed by so many of his ancestors’ sweat, sacrifice, blood. You know, they did everything they could for his generation to be successful. But now that he’s climbed on board ship, instead of reaching down and steadying the ladder, he wants to push it off. You know, “I’m up here. If you’re not with me, too bad.” And President Obama, fortunately, is the kind of guy that says, “I was very fortunate to get where I am and I’m going to spend my life trying to steady that ladder of opportunity by reducing college tuition and training our workers, trying to get a decent job for everybody. Making sure that while I’m African-American, it really doesn’t matter. What matters is my commitment to public service, my love for this country and, you know. I’m going to leave a constructive legacy.’”

I was … not aware that West opposes lower college tuition, well-trained workers, and jobs. I’d bet cash money that he supports all three so long as they’re being driven by the private sector, precisely because the private sector can build that ladder better than government can. But then, that’s why Moran tossed the “ancestors” reference in there — to use the notion of race treason as a deterrent against minority viewers who might otherwise agree with West about government intervention in markets. It’s one of Democrats’ most brutal tactics and it’s not limited to black Republicans. The boss emeritus has had trolls tossing “race traitor” nonsense at her literally for decades, yet I’d be surprised if even one has bothered trying to explain why Americans of Filipino ancestry should be seen as selling out their heritage by preferring smaller government. The logic seems to be that she’s a minority and minority conservatives are “inauthentic” and, well, there you go. QED.

That’s clip one. Clip two, via the MRC, speaks for itself; skip ahead to around 11 minutes in and listen to radio host Thaddeus Matthews strip Moran’s point of its Beltway-speak patina to its rawest, most vicious form and then throw it in the face of Republican Charlotte Bergmann. Nice to see this argument naked for once.

Why don’t working class whites see how they are used by the GOP? Why don’t conservatives ever ask that question?

libfreeordie on February 1, 2012 at 5:56 PM

Pardon? Working class whites are used by both parties. How many times during an election do we here both candidates refer to the working class? The drumbeat never stops; don’t for a second pretend that only the GOP is guilty of this.

Erich66 on February 1, 2012 at 6:02 PM

Always funny to hear people from the political party that wouldn’t vote for civil rights, kept Jim Crow laws in place, and continued to support a KKK recruiter as a US Senator, say that Republicans are racist.

Right now liberal4life is wondering what this really means.

oldroy on February 1, 2012 at 6:03 PM

well! i love it when white people tell us black people who it is who supposedly does or does not represents us. it’s not like we blacks have brains and can decide which politicians we like/dislike for ourselves. i am so glad that we have helpful white people here to tell us how to think. thank you, jim moron.

sarcasm aside: allen west worked so hard to get where he is and now it’s his responsibility to help give handouts and special privileges to other blacks? did west himself rely on handouts and privileges? don’t think so. he’s a role model for blacks. i know there are some blacks who wouldn’t agree with that but i think more and more are realizing that liberalism isn’t good, and they are moving away from that. so i hope more black people will discover that allen west is a role model.

and liberal4life, you have repeatedly said “there is a certain word to describe them” but you never actually said what the word is. are you too afraid to say it directly? if you’re not scared, then say the word. also, what race are you? i’m just curious.

Sachiko on February 1, 2012 at 6:03 PM

Republicans stood for abolition.
Democrats formed the Ku Klux Klan to target free blacks and abolitionist Republicans.

But why let history get in the way of an opportunity to play the race card?

Martin complains that we don’t call Obama, President Obama. The media made a point of calling President Bush, Mr. Bush. They did it ALL the time. This really ticks me off.

earlgrey133 on February 1, 2012 at 5:59 PM

They can thank Bill Clinton for that.

I remember during the debates when he refused to refer to President Bush as President Bush. He always referred to him as Mr. Bush.

It created quite a buzz back then when it happened.

But ever since then, it’s become the norm to do that to a president one doesn’t agree with.

This same idiot would be pounding his fist on the table about the unemployment rate amongst Black people if a Republican was in the White House right now. But since we have the first really articulate mulatto as POTUS, well then, Black people can eat wood chips for dinner, just so long as they stay “authentic”.

Keep the public schools catering to Ebonics, dismissing them with the soft bigotry of low expectations and allowing them to drop out in huge numbers, making them destined for the hardest of jobs and the poorest of wages. By all means deprive them of vouchers so that they can’t put their children in better schools. Push for “affirmative action” to always keep them painfully aware that they are being stigmatized as slightly inferior. Then dole out welfare and food stamps so they don’t riot in the streets.

Blacks don’t feel welcomed in the republikkkan party.
only a certain type of blacks are welcomed into the party if you know what I mean….

liberal4life on February 1, 2012 at 5:34 PM

Curious bit of projection there – since the KKK was actually founded by the DemoKKKrat Party, the same party whose politicians designed and implemented the Jim Crow laws.

But you are correct about the Republican Party wanting certain types of blacks – we want the ones who want to get away from government dependency, be self-sufficient, want to compete for equal opportunity and be successfull, and actually “judge people people by the content of their character instead of the color of their skin”. Whereas the DemoKKKrat Party wants more government dependents, to be judged only by the color of their skin. Republicans freed blacks from the plantation and gave them equal rights – the DemoKKKrats want to put them back on the plantation. You can try all you want to spin the standard lies, but the historical record is very clear to anyone who actually knows how to read.

dentarthurdent on February 1, 2012 at 6:07 PM

What will you say about the black people who vote for him libfreeordie?

EnochCain on February 1, 2012 at 6:07 PM

First let me say that Congressman West did not say for Harry, Nancy and Obie Liar to get out. What he said was for them to get the socialist MESSAGE that they blabber all over the country out of the USA. It is not the foundation of this country and neither is the attitude of both of these idiots in this video. The democraps have done more to keep blacks poor than any group in the country. Teach the poor black, white yellow red or brown a skill or trade or continue grants for college and help them pass the subjects. But do not keep them on welfare for life. This is not rocket science.

Erich66 on February 1, 2012 at 6:14 PM

As a black man who’s spent the last 4 years criticizing Obama (the Tim Geithner appointment sparked it) I get the point you’re making. But there’s a major irony here. This thread (and most of the posters) are criticizing Jim Moran for telling Allen West he’s not authentically black. And yet white conservatives take it upon themselves to call African Americans *slaves on a plantation* because the majority of them do not vote the way conservatives would like them to vote.

If Jim Moran doesn’t have the authority to decide who is authentically black or who isn’t, then it is certainly NOT the place of conservative Republicans to tell black people which party best serves their interest. That conversation needs to happen *within* the black community and it *IS* ongoing within the black community. There are millions of black people who look at both parties and say “I’m not going to vote!” Or have you not familiarized yourself with the rates of black electoral participation. In today’s ridiculous two party system choosing to *NOT* vote is a legit protest agsinst the status quo. Those folks are most decidedly not on a plantation, but you’ll never hear conservatives make that case. You’re too busy trying to find clever ways to call blacks slave. The ish is tired.

Not quite true. Conservative blacks are saying the same thing.

… Probably not.

Wow somebody actually is making the point that racism isn’t the worst thing.

CW on February 1, 2012 at 6:25 PM

Democrats in the 1950s were racist. Newsflash darling, so were most white people. Black people voted Dem in the 50s because FDR threw us a bone by desegregating the military and there were a few other minor things he did. But either party was a Hobson’s choice until the 1960s.

Flora Duh on February 1, 2012 at 6:25 PM

You’re too busy trying to find clever ways to call blacks slave. The ish is tired.

libfreeordie on February 1, 2012 at 6:21 PM

Yeah, requiring people to be responsible for their own lives and defending their liberty is an obvious sign that we really want blacks to be slaves. (/cue “Twilight Zone” theme)

One question, do you enjoy kissing the collective asses of the Democratic party with asinine comments like that? Let us know when you decide to use the mass within your head, known as a “brain,” instead of issuing the same talking points handed out by your Democratic masters.

… at which point Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act on principle, Democrats filibustered the Civil Rights Act on principle, and Lyndon Johnson championed and signed the bill on the premise of “having them niggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years”.

Not a term I tend to employ in my own speech – I have no taste for it – but for better or worse, that is the quote as it was reported.

And yet white conservatives take it upon themselves to call African Americans *slaves on a plantation* because the majority of them do not vote the way conservatives would like them to vote.

I had initially planned to ask if you had any evidence for this claim but I realize that, as a liberal, logical thought is a foreign concept to you.

Kingfisher on February 1, 2012 at 6:27 PM

But you’re right all political vitriol is reserved for conservative blacks or something.

You do understand that this is the topic at hand, race, one you’ve been arguing on for most of the thread, right? Because I checked and sure enough that was you.

The left and right say all sorts of things about one another, but listens2Glenn (who you responded to) was pointing out how blacks who don’t vote demorat or identify as conservative get all sorts of racial terms thrown at them by the left.

Do you think that black people at the time held any illusions about who LBJ was and that he was racist? Him signing the 1964 CRA, in light of his racism, was a *VICTORY.* Or is your suggestion that black people should’ve waited to outlaw Jim Crow until they had a President who wasn’t a racist at heart? Would’ve been a looooong wait.

Kingfisher on February 1, 2012 at 6:27 PM

Are you actually going to sit (or stand or whatever) where you are and assert that conservatives don’t call blacks who loyally support Democrats as being “on a plantation.” Are you actually going to say that? I don’t know how any thinking person can take you seriously after that. No one is fooled.

libfreeordie on February 1, 2012 at 6:32 PM

Libs just hear what they want to hear. It’s the left that categorizes people by race, not the right. The entire history of the left from slavery to Margret Sanger, to today’s dependence on government is all about race.

If you’re thinking about a president and desegregating the military you might check out Truman. But actually, Eisenhower desegregated troops in Europe in 1944.

But thanks for playing

Harpoon on February 1, 2012 at 6:32 PM

As a black man who’s spent the last 4 years criticizing Obama (the Tim Geithner appointment sparked it) I get the point you’re making. But there’s a major irony here. This thread (and most of the posters) are criticizing Jim Moran for telling Allen West he’s not authentically black. And yet white conservatives take it upon themselves to call African Americans *slaves on a plantation* because the majority of them do not vote the way conservatives would like them to vote.

I will speak for myself. My frustration is not that blacks are generally a monolithic voting block. If that’s how the black community wants to vote, so be it. What is specifically annoying to me is hearing cat-calls of “inauthenticity” whenever a black joins the GOP or decides to vote with conservatives. And coming from a white liberal (Moran), it’s reprehensible. Thats my sole point. Someone else here can address what you perceive to be a contradiction re: “slaves on a plantation”

And in the mid 1960s, many Democrats, including Algore’s Father, voted against the Civil Rights Act.
