Video: Gingrich’s kinda sorta concession speech

posted at 10:41 pm on January 31, 2012 by Allahpundit

Yeah, I’m thinking that a guy who’s quoting the Declaration of Independence in his final lines probably isn’t thinking of conceding the race anytime soon. BuzzFeed has a copy of his campaign’s official post-election talking points, but you don’t really need those to grasp the takeaway here. One line: “It is now clear that this will be a two-person race between the conservative leader, Newt Gingrich, and the Massachusetts moderate, and the voters of Florida made that clear.” In other words, Santorum’s dead on arrival (even though he polls better against Romney than Newt does), so it’s time for conservatives to consolidate behind the only remaining viable Not Romney in the field. Honestly, that’s probably the most compelling reason for his candidacy going forward. Good for him, I guess, for identifying it.

If you’re wondering why the post about the concession speech is going up after the victory speech, it’s because Newt apparently refused to call Romney to concede tonight and decided to wait him out. Terrific. Exit quotation from Larry Sabato: “None of the February contests are good for Gingrich. Caucuses, by their very nature, reward long, detailed planning and considerable resources to gin up turnout. Translation: They are tailor-made for Romney and Paul.”

Gingrich supported the war. I think Romney was ambivalent on it. That’s the difference to me.

Schadenfreude on February 1, 2012 at 12:31 AM

A point Rush Limbaugh made today is that the 2012 GOP primary is based more on disliking candidates rather than energetically supporting them. Some promote Newt and bash Romney, not because they support Newt, but because they loathe Romney. Others support Romney or Santorum and Bash Newt more because they dislike Newt rather than they are strong supporters of Romney or Santorum.

The problem can be people staying home in November regardless on whom is nominated.

Well, look, either you’ll have an extremist conservative, be it Gingrich or Santorum, in which case I think it will make a big difference which of the two comes in,’ he told Chrystia Freeland of Reuters in a videotaped interview. ‘If it’s between Obama and Romney, there isn’t all that much difference except for the crowd that they bring with them.’

Romneycare = Obamacare. the MA experiments under Mitt are the same as Obama. the only difference is the people the two bring. Or in other words who gets the taxpayer dollars.

I’m not voting for a liberal. regardless of if the liberals has a R beside their name. You can live in your fantasyworld and hope mitt will change things. But me I seen what hope and change can do. Schadenfreude on February 1, 2012 at 12:55 AM

Here’s the problem with the idea of Santorum getting out to make way for Gingrich.

The next state where Romney realistically, COULD be vulnerable, is Missouri, and only then because Gingrich isn’t on the ballet, it’ll be a one-on-one match against Santorum there. Because of this, Santorum has no reason, whatsoever, to drop out before Missouri.

Now, that’s only on the 7th of February, so if he loses and drops out after then that may not seem like he’d be in the race much longer. However, if he loses Missouri, it’ll mean that Romney went into a Southern state primary, with a single conservative alternative and won. If thats the case, it’ll be very very difficult for Mr Gingrich to maintain the idea that its still an open contest.

If however Santorum wins, he’ll have every reason in the world to stay in until at least Super Tuesday.

Either scenario presents a huge problem for Gingrich. Romney can afford to lose Missouri, its one state with non-binding delegates, and it votes on the same day as two other states Romney is expected to take handily. Gingrich cannot afford to have Santorum win, because if he does Santorum has a compelling argument for conservatives to rally behind him. If Romney wins the state however, he really will end up running the table during February, which would make Super-Tuesday no contest.

Either way, its not looking very good for Gingrich. This is almost literally a no-win situation.

Typical of Gingrich, lacking both grace and substance. He has the gall to call himself ‘the conservative leader’ and once again lifts a line from truly great men to try and serve his own ends, and lacks the grace to congratulate Romney, who truly and easily bested him tonight in Florida. I’m thankful that Gingrich will never be the GOP nominee and has, more than likely, ended his own political aspirations with this run.

Rasmussen approval: 51%

It has been steadily climbing over the past 2 months. Economy’s improving, stock markets are in a nice run, interest rates are insanely low, gas is back in the $2.XX range.

And here comes Romney talking about Obama destroying the economy? Yeah good luck with that.

This is all Mittens has. Vote for me because I am a CEO and can turn things around. OK. But what if things are already turning around with Obama, what else do you have? He has nothing else to sell. No conservative vision of America. No Hope-N-Change. Nothing.
And he will lose.

A lot of folks knew what was coming, the unengaged public is the most dangerous part, self governance requires responsible citizenry. We have little. It is the thin spot in the ice. We now find ourselves in freezing water, desperately clutching to get out. Its why out of fear the uniformed citizen reaches for Mitt. He represents safety to them. The sure fire way to keep from drowning. Shortly all our hope for surviving will rest with his ability to ward off our demise. I’m not the type that’s comfortable with that, but I don’t want to drown either.

I leave you with the real problem. I did not see a single minority in Romney’s audience. Call me racist- but I looked real hard. Not one- maybe a few light skinned hispanics- but that is his achilles. This election will be about Race (and economy), but mostly about kicking (Firing) a media loved black man out of a job he has earned. Doesn’t hurt that its tough to find a black mormon either.
Holder has already played the first race card. That’s why Newters Ghetto Janitor jobs program was “offensive”. Racial sensitivity will be OFF the charts come this fall. And it will work.
Mittens- if he is nom- will have to have a person of color as VEEP. Please don’t suggest Jindal. Condoleeza Rice is probably the only available minority able to neutralize the coming racial attack.

Fewer blacks will be voting for Bamster, because the intensity is lower. And slightly fewer Hispanics because he didn’t quite give him everything they wanted.

Igor R. on February 1, 2012 at 1:35 AM

Schadenfreude also doesn’t believe I was born in Russia. How can I know what makes him think things??? And there used to be a famous sock puppet of a dog who was the emblem of Pets.com in the dotcom era.

Igor R. on February 1, 2012 at 1:23 AM

I’ve never said that I didn’t believe that you came here from Russian when you were a teenager. That’s what you said and I have no reason to doubt it. It’s not that outlandish. And anyway, it doesn’t matter. If it did please you to trick me into believing some story, where’s the harm? I’m just a very open person and I don’t understand why some people feel the need to be secretive. I’m sure they (and you) have your reasons, though. Maybe the people around you in your real life would give you a hard time if they knew that you were secretly a hardline conservative Republican. But a sockpuppet means that a person uses more than one identity, so I don’t know what Schadenfreude meant by that.

cynccook on February 1, 2012 at 1:37 AM

Rasmussen approval: 51%

It has been steadily climbing over the past 2 months. Economy’s improving, stock markets are in a nice run, interest rates are insanely low, gas is back in the $2.XX range.

And here comes Romney talking about Obama destroying the economy? Yeah good luck with that.

This is all Mittens has. Vote for me because I am a CEO and can turn things around. OK. But what if things are already turning around with Obama, what else do you have? He has nothing else to sell. No conservative vision of America. No Hope-N-Change. Nothing.
And he will lose.

angryed on February 1, 2012 at 1:27 AM

Geez, why is this guy allowed to make his constant Obama propaganda here?

If I wanted to read democrat spin over and over, I’d go to DailyKos.

I didn’t know we had to get permission from Joana the Great to provide an opinion.

I notice you didn’t actually refute anything I said.

Typical Mittbot.

angryed on February 1, 2012 at 1:46 AM

They are the most vicious hyenas around. The last few weeks have been incredibly revealing. Let them expose themselves furthre and see how their math adds up. The “independents” who are not independent at all, hate their guts too. Check the numbers of late.

Schadenfreude on February 1, 2012 at 12:33 AM

Just on this thread when someone innocently commented on the lower turnout in Florida. The response was that it is not Romney’s fault, it is the stupid Florida voters with Romney paranoia who are to blame.

’tis a mystery. So you’re really pro-Romney now? How important are things like Roe v. Wade, the 2nd Amendment, etc. to you?

The raging MittBot Haner got swatted off of HotAir for being vulgar and csdeven is running around saying people are whiney little (rhymnes with stitches). WT Heck is wrong with these Mitt CW nutters? Somebody call the pest control people.

cynccook on February 1, 2012 at 1:53 AM

I’m not pro-Romney per se, I just don’t like Newt, but when Romney couldn’t debate him I figured he was worthless, and then he could again so I went back to my relative preference. I care about the 2nd Amendment, and not that much about abortion. I don’t believe Romney will do much about either on the Federal level. I actually prefer most of Newt’s views, but the immigration thing, the attacks from the left, at his general craziness make me make a pretty tough choice for Romney.

Igor R. on February 1, 2012 at 1:57 AM

Newt Gingrich only lost Florida because the voters there could not see in him the greatness that he sees in himself.

VorDaj on February 1, 2012 at 1:58 AM

I don’t even think Newt’s Moonies really think he has any sacred honor.

captn2fat on February 1, 2012 at 1:59 AM

This is a question for the ladies here. Only the ladies, so stay out AP. What would be involved in the products used and time spent each day to make your hair look like Callista Gingrich’s? Looks like a major situation to me, and I know that a man’s fingers could hardly penetrate that helmet-like fixture on top of her head, much less muss it in a moment of passion. Am I missing something here?

TXUS on February 1, 2012 at 12:09 AM

Tons and tons of time. First the cut has to be just so, and to keep that color (PLATINUM) with no roots, she would have to go in every other week or so. Then a blow dry with glaze/moisture products and then curling iron and/or flat iron and then hairspray, hairspray,….so 2 hours a day maybe. I bet she has a full time hair gal or guy right now for the political season. By the look in her eye and time spent, I would bet a flash of passion isn’t on her agenda.:-)

That wasn’t the only reason. They also didn’t the the greatness that Callista sees in him.

Igor R. on February 1, 2012 at 2:00 AM

I just don’t think that Romney can win. There’s just too big an enthusiasm gap. I hope I’m wrong, because I think that if Romney did somehow manage to pull it off, he’d have to be better than Obama. I mean, he wouldn’t dare veer to the Left again, would he?

Chances are he will veer to the left, the degree will be focus group tested. You have to keep in mind that Obama didn’t beat McCain by all that much, if 3.5 million people changed their mind he would lose. And this was in the middle of the economy literally exploding, plus McCain being a horrible candidate overall who vociferously claimed he didn’t know anything about the economy.

And now, as you know, it’s my bed time. Good night!

Yes. Igor is from Russia. He is my legitimate son from a blond Russian ballerina. He ran away from home as a teenager and stowed away in a traveling minstrel show touring from Russia to France and Germany and apparently from there made his way to America.

I’m having doubts about any of them being able to. Its a really weak field. The GOP has gotten real good at shooting its self in the foot over the past few years so I’ve little faith left in them. As for him being better than Obama, yeah I have no doubt that he would be better. How much is anyones guess but Obama sets the bar so low it aint hard.

Sultanofsham on February 1, 2012 at 2:11 AM

It’s “do svidaniya”, literally “until seeing each other gain”. “s” is a prefix that means “with”, “vid” is the same root that’s in “vision”, and the rest is complex russian suffixes. Now good night for real!
