Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on January 31, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

We interrupt our parade of SOTU fumbles to bring this curious moment from yesterday, in which Barack Obama engaged voters in a Google+ “hangout,” ie, a video town hall. One voter asked Obama to explain why he has not curtailed the issuance of H1B visas in the engineering field, as her husband has not been able to find work in his field despite having 10 years of experience. Instead of commiserating with the woman about the situation — and perhaps blaming it on those rich so-and-sos sitting on capital instead of expanding investment — Obama instead tells the woman that while he doesn’t know what her husband does, Obama’s sure he shouldn’t be unemployed … at least according to his own understanding of the economy:

During his Google+ hangout Pres. Obama tells a woman that her husband shouldn’t be unemployed from the growth he has seen in the economy. Obama said he finds it “interesting” because he is getting “the word” that someone in her husband’s job field “should be able to find something right away.” …

The woman wants to know why Obama is extending visas for foreigners when there is tons of demand for American jobs by Americans.

“I don’t know what your husband’s speciality [is], but I can tell you that there is a huge demand around the country for engineers,” Obama told the woman.

A “huge” demand for semiconductor engineers? Perhaps, but the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the computer and electronic products industry (the employment category in which this job falls) at 36th in employment growth for November to December, with only 200 jobs added nationwide. That was an improvement over the previous three months, which averaged a decline of 1900 jobs a month in that period.  Small wonder the wife asked why H1B visas continued to be issued in this industry.

We’re left with one of two conclusions. Either Barack Obama knows this industry like the back of his hand, better than the BLS, and the husband is some kind of slacker, or Obama doesn’t have the grasp of the economy that he thinks he does. Give Obama this much credit: at least he refrained this time from assuming out loud that the husband acted stupidly.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Just another example of Barry’s narcissism. He always thinks he knows more than anyone else, but the reality is that he is shockingly ignorant on most topics, but too in love with himself to even consider the possibility that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

He is just so awful one on one with people. I mean, when he started to answer her question “Well I don’t know what type of engineer your husband is but…” I assumed that the question wasn’t live and there was no opportunity for feedback. Then nearly two minutes in–after he pontificated tediously–when the woman replied I just sat there thinking “You moron, why on EARTH didn’t you respond to her initial question by asking for more information before you speculated?” I know lots of folks here hated Clinton, but for God’s sakes, that’s exactly what he would have done. He would have had a brief dialog with the lady before the dance. Obama can’t even do that; he’s got to right away tell everybody what’s in his mind before he even gets all the facts. That is the short definition of a narcissist.

petefrt on January 31, 2012 at 8:22 AM

I’m not sure how these visas are used in tech industries, but I have some knowledge with how special work visas are used in agriculture.
Farmers & ranchers have a really hard time hiring people who are skilled.
And yes, it takes skill to work with animals, or bees or run a combine etc.
You cannot find reliable employees in America for these industries.
I can’t tell you of all the stories about hired farm hands who are incompetent or steal or just run off in the dead of night & never come back during a critical time like harvest.
No, the pay is not necessarily the best in the world. But it IS work to be had & it’s possible to make a living by it & it’s also possible if you get with the right place to make a go of it on your own.
I know many farmers & ranchers that have helped their hired hands get into the business with bonuses like gifting them cows/livestock or some land & the use of the boss’s equipment to put in their own little crop.
The people doing these jobs are usually foreigners coming from places like N. & S. Africa & S. America & Mexico.
So I’m not quite sure about the tech industry, but unfortunately, even though there is a lot of work available in agriculture, there’s not a lot of willing Americans for those jobs.
Keep in mind I’m not talking about the ag companies that want cheapo workers. I’m talking about farmers & ranchers who want a hired man to STAY.

Surely it is Bush’s fault. The look on her face was priceless, btw.
He also spoke with a homeless, iraq veteran and neglected to thank him for his service which is the obligatory first thing you say to any veteran, I would think.
The thing was contrived and awkward. The top voted questions referenced legalizing pot and yet not one of those questions were asked.

Interesting apparently means “your husband must be some kind of a pathetic loser.”

And BTW Barry whatever growth there is in the economy is not enough to generate the fictional jobs you claim you created or saved.

MisterElephant on January 31, 2012 at 8:35 AM

There’s something kind of fishy about saying, this far into the Great Recession which started at the end of 2008, that H1B visas are for positions that companies have trouble filling.

This implies that there are jobs they’ve had trouble filling through 2009, and 2010, and 2011. And that we needed to keep the H1B visa program running this whole time.

Obama said he finds it “interesting” because he is getting “the word” that someone in her husband’s job field “should be able to find something right away.”

Probably because the lickspittles in PBHO’s inner circle are only there for the perks just as he is. They know PBHO doesn’t really care and possesses zero skills to get anything done if he did care, so they sugarcoat everything.

In the last days of this administration there will be a mad scramble to steal anything not bolted to the walls or floor; the rats will be jamming their suitcases with everything from silverware to ashtrays.

It has been a slow death but the first sign was when he allowed black racists to get away with armed confrontation with voters. Followed closely by over twenty unelected and unconfirmed individuals who have set up a shadow government within the White House. Then there was the indivudual mandate for healthcare. And more recently, making “recess appointments” when Congress was in session.

It’s all been said upthread, but if you want the blog hit, here’s mine:

For such a brilliant politician, completely amateurish in the way he interacted with the woman, not even to ask her what kind of engineer her husband is. As someone already said, that’s what Clinton would have done: shown a little empathy for the woman’s personal situation, then tossed out a platitude. Only the empathy would be remembered.

Completely out of his depth on the facts about jobs, the economy, the impact of H1Bs on employment, etc. I’m not sure that even “amateurish” does justice to the abysmal ignorance and insouciance.

The H1B program allows companies to “enslave” bright foriegn workers for 5 years while they jump ahead of the line and work on their citizenship. I worked for a co that did this, it had a large legal group responsible for helping these folks cross t’s and dot i’s in the H1B program. It hired them for a low wage (for and advanced degree engineer) and kept them there thruout the pgm. If they were fired/laid off they had 1 month to find a job or get sent back. We would be better off directing our college grants and loans at the professions we need.

If the calculus sequence and engineering physics sequence were free to those that passed, we would have many more engineers.

The semiconductor industry is finally on a moderate rise again after about 8 months of steady decline. Thanks to the people who decry the “rich getting richer”, and their monetary mismanagement, only the strongest chipmakers survived the period without substantial difficulty. This is especially true in the U.S., where the big names gained market-share through the destruction of smaller chip foundries under the burden of anti-business regulations.

Too bad nobody like Ayn Rand ever suggested that this scenario was a possibility, it might have provided the wisdom and common sense to avoid it. Or not.
