Gingrich robocall: Romney canceled kosher meals for Holocaust survivors, you know

posted at 4:59 pm on January 31, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Breitbart TV. To appreciate how slimy this is, go read Alana Goodman’s piece at Commentary debunking the central charge. Romney did veto $600,000 in additional funding as governor of Massachusetts for kosher kitchens in nursing homes; he was trying to hold down spending and thought nursing homes could make do with prepackaged kosher meals or kosher catering instead. The Massachusetts legislature ended up overriding his veto so nursing homes got the extra 600 grand anyway.

Somehow that became a springboard for Gingrich to hit Romney repeatedly on the stump yesterday as some sort of enemy of religious freedom, which in turn became the robocall you’re about to hear. How curious that Newt claims to know nothing about it even though he was pushing the same message on the trail. Ah well. Can’t wait to see how this new religious-flavored attack on Mitt Romney develops as the campaign progresses.

At airport rallies in Pensacola and Fort Myers, Mr. Gingrich added a new pledge in his stump speeches, saying he would sign an executive order overturning all “anti-religious” federal policies on his first day in office.

Mr. Gingrich, a Catholic convert, also sought to drag his main rival Mitt Romney into the controversy, saying that as governor, Mr. Romney had imposed a similar requirement on Catholic hospitals. Mr. Gingrich appeared to be referring to abortion provisions in the state health-care overhaul law passed in Massachusetts. The Catholic Church opposes abortion and the use of contraception.

Mr. Gingrich also accused Mr. Romney of cutting kosher meals to elderly Medicaid recipients in Massachusetts in a cost-saving effort.

“He has no understanding of the importance of conscience or the importance of religious liberty in this country,” said Mr. Gingrich of Mr. Romney, who is a Mormon. “I will make religious liberty your right, to go with God with no government interference.”

Romney’s history on exempting Catholic hospitals from laws requiring them to administer birth control is confusing. He vetoed a bill in 2005 that would have forced all hospitals to provide the “morning after” pill; after the veto was overridden, his lawyers determined that the new law left hospitals with no choice but to comply — although Romney added at the time that in his “personal view,” hospitals should provide emergency contraception in cases of rape. That’s vintage Romney nuance for you. Newt’s take on it, though? Quote: “I think Gov. Romney is extraordinarily insensitive to religious freedom in America”. Which, I guess, Romney deserved for trying to pry kosher food out of the mouths of Holocaust survivors.

Three clips for you here, one of the robocall and two of Romney’s speech in 2008 accepting the Becket Fund’s Canterbury Medal. The citation? “Courage in the Defense of Religious Freedom.”

Gingrich is a nasty, bitter, little hobgoblin.

Pork-Chop on January 31, 2012 at 5:07 PM

It was Perry for me, but I cannot vote for Gingrich because he is a liar. Now, Gingrich saying Romney was a “liar” does not make him one, in fact where has Mittens lied about Gingrich’s record? Gingrich is constantly saying “liar” and “distortion” without saying what the “lie” was.

For example, his big beef about Reagan is in the gray zone, with good arguments on both sides.

For someone who lied about supporting Goldwater, people love to carry his pail.

It is clear that Santorum, Romney and Perry were the candidates who had character, but not Gingrich. Today, will make me feel better.

ddrintn on January 31, 2012 at 5:12 PM

Hmm, I would put this particular ad at the civil end of the scale. I guess that when you take an innocent man who was forced to go through two years of investigations and was forced to pay $300,000, lost his reputation, and subsequently decided to give up his legislative position he won with a significant majority because the injustice of it was continuing to prevent him from doing legitimate legal activities and then run him over the coals because the main stream media failed to report that he was subsequently exonerated on everything you are an honorable person worthy of having your insensitive actions as governor be painted only in the most pleasing of light? Romney is the kind of person that will bring up an exonerated man’s rape conviction and years in jail for that conviction, despite having been exonerated fully and completely for Romney’s own benefit.

astonerii on January 31, 2012 at 5:13 PM

OT – what should concern the R establishment.

My concern is that the Tea Party will recoil from supporting a Republican Party that is headed by John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, and Mitt Romney.

I spoke with one such Tea Partier, Rebecca from Florida, over the weekend. She’s a retired detective turned young stay-at-home mom, who labels herself a “generic Tea Partier.” What she had to say was fascinating and illuminating, and it should concern just about every smart Republican. She was gracious enough to let me publicize her thoughts here at Ricochet.

The statistic of the campaign: Less than 0.1% of ads in FL were positive Romney ads. Read that again.

Jonathan Karl @jonkarl
68% of the FL ads were attacks on Gingrich, 23% anti-Romney, 9% pro-Gingrich. Again: 0.1% were positive Romney ads (per Kantar Media CMAG)

Jonathan Karl @jonkarl
The only positive Romney ad aired over the past week was single Spanish language radio ad.

And the reason politicians use “attack ads”, is because they work.

Of all the days. Martyrs are indignant.

Mitt is up by double digits, likely, and you say this?

Schadenfreude on January 31, 2012 at 5:18 PM

It’ll be forgotten in 24 hours when it’s off to the next state. Yeah it’s slimy and sleazy. It’s politics. Boo hoo. Mittsn needs to put on his big boy pants. If he can’t handle this ad in a primary, what will he do when the Axelrod/Soros ads start flying at him 24/7?

angryed on January 31, 2012 at 5:12 PM

Ummm, not the point. Newt may be many things, but he’s not new. This is such a losing proposition that it qualifies as a rookie mistake.

ElectricPhase on January 31, 2012 at 5:18 PM

Newt Gingrich is suffering a mental meltdown, he is unstable, erratic, undisciplined, bi-polar. Newt Gingrich is unfit for office and any person who is supporting him is plain crazy, stupid or Sarah Palin.

Once again you see right through me, promachus. Every time someone criticizes Romney, I die a little inside. Except for when I’m criticizing him, I mean. Then it’s okay.

Allahpundit on January 31, 2012 at 5:05 PM

Criticize? You mean when you apt on Mitten’s backside and say “Naughty!” ?

promachus on January 31, 2012 at 5:19 PM

It’s that a potential president of the United States would dip to such a level…that is to invoke Jewish Holocaust as a political attack on something that is clearly not true. It is unpresidential. In my mind, it is disqualifying. And if Romney made a similar argument, I would say the same about him.

Beat me to it. Well said.

Poor Allahpundit, you must be so distressed that your toyboy Mittens is feeling some heat.

Palin has ‘endorsed’ Gingrich so promachus will attack anyone who speaks ill of him.

Oh for the love of pete, COME ON!!!

no wonder i haven’t been commenting much about this race…these guys are utterly worthless. (cept insofar as they are *not-Obama*)

ted c on January 31, 2012 at 5:19 PM

When Romney carpet-bombed Iowa with anti-Newt ads, he opened a Pandora’s box. He’ll live to regret doing that.

ddrintn on January 31, 2012 at 5:15 PM

Wrong. This robo call won’t hurt Romney because it is so ugly no one will believe it. When Newt went to that level, he permanently damaged his brand. This will hurt Newt going forward.

cd98 on January 31, 2012 at 5:19 PM

Not as “slimy” as the fake CNN articles being distributed by the Romney Campaign in SC, AllahP. Forget about that, did you? Conveniently?
