Gingrich robocall: Romney canceled kosher meals for Holocaust survivors, you know

posted at 4:59 pm on January 31, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Breitbart TV. To appreciate how slimy this is, go read Alana Goodman’s piece at Commentary debunking the central charge. Romney did veto $600,000 in additional funding as governor of Massachusetts for kosher kitchens in nursing homes; he was trying to hold down spending and thought nursing homes could make do with prepackaged kosher meals or kosher catering instead. The Massachusetts legislature ended up overriding his veto so nursing homes got the extra 600 grand anyway.

Somehow that became a springboard for Gingrich to hit Romney repeatedly on the stump yesterday as some sort of enemy of religious freedom, which in turn became the robocall you’re about to hear. How curious that Newt claims to know nothing about it even though he was pushing the same message on the trail. Ah well. Can’t wait to see how this new religious-flavored attack on Mitt Romney develops as the campaign progresses.

At airport rallies in Pensacola and Fort Myers, Mr. Gingrich added a new pledge in his stump speeches, saying he would sign an executive order overturning all “anti-religious” federal policies on his first day in office.

Mr. Gingrich, a Catholic convert, also sought to drag his main rival Mitt Romney into the controversy, saying that as governor, Mr. Romney had imposed a similar requirement on Catholic hospitals. Mr. Gingrich appeared to be referring to abortion provisions in the state health-care overhaul law passed in Massachusetts. The Catholic Church opposes abortion and the use of contraception.

Mr. Gingrich also accused Mr. Romney of cutting kosher meals to elderly Medicaid recipients in Massachusetts in a cost-saving effort.

“He has no understanding of the importance of conscience or the importance of religious liberty in this country,” said Mr. Gingrich of Mr. Romney, who is a Mormon. “I will make religious liberty your right, to go with God with no government interference.”

Romney’s history on exempting Catholic hospitals from laws requiring them to administer birth control is confusing. He vetoed a bill in 2005 that would have forced all hospitals to provide the “morning after” pill; after the veto was overridden, his lawyers determined that the new law left hospitals with no choice but to comply — although Romney added at the time that in his “personal view,” hospitals should provide emergency contraception in cases of rape. That’s vintage Romney nuance for you. Newt’s take on it, though? Quote: “I think Gov. Romney is extraordinarily insensitive to religious freedom in America”. Which, I guess, Romney deserved for trying to pry kosher food out of the mouths of Holocaust survivors.

Three clips for you here, one of the robocall and two of Romney’s speech in 2008 accepting the Becket Fund’s Canterbury Medal. The citation? “Courage in the Defense of Religious Freedom.”

The solution, obviously, is Newt Gingrich, who will only have to sleep with about three hundred or so before the rest of the women fall in line.

The real reason most people don’t find Romney’s attacks against Gingrich to be that bad is because most people believe in their heart that Newt is a disgusting guy, his life story and the fact that when paid the right price he will join with anybody, from Pelosi to Sharpton, etc..

Speaking of Sharpton, would it be fair to say that Newt is a Jew hater since he is friends with Sharpton, who is responsible for the killing of an innocent Jewish guy (Brooklyn 1992 The riot that gave us Rudy)

Newt’s next robocall to New Yorkers with names ending in -stein and -berg:

Newt’s desperation has gone into orbit.

LOL! That looks like a rather amateurishly designed “credible source”, and it’s a blog! Unfortunately for you, it also has the 2002 figure totally wrong.

According to data from the non-partisan Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center (MBPC), a state think tank, here are the numbers,
which show total state spending under Romney by fiscal year, in billions of dollars adjusted for inflation, as follows:

FY 2003 $34,028,300

FY 2004 $34,876,943

FY 2005 $34,259,972

FY 2006 $33,887,009

FY 2007 $35,321,649

Spending went up in fiscal years 2004 and 2007 under Romney, but it went down in fiscal years 2003, 2005 and 2006.

(Spending in FY 2002 was $35.42 billion.)

Also, the budgets were balanced every year Romney was in office.

http://browser.massbudget.org/CompareCurrentYear.aspx?typ=Past&bgt=18,19,20,21,22,23&infl=IPD&c1=19&hf=Past#topOfTable

By the way, if you explore the massbudget.org website, you’ll see that they have quite a staff, and their funding and support comes from all sides of the aisle, including the unions. On the other hand, your source is an individual Far-Right blogger who apparently got his 2002 number very wrong!
