The comments created a mild controversy, as Democrats (and former RNC Chairman Michael Steele) declared that it was inappropriate of Priebus to make the comparison given that at least 16 people died when the Costa Concordia sank.

And it appears that at least 301 people have been killed by guns given to criminals by the Obama administration in their Fast & Furious operation to drum up support for more gun control.

This isn’t a hill to die on, though, and it might have served Priebus better to have said he was sorry to have mentioned Captain Schettino. If nothing else, that would have made DWS’ refusal to apologize for her truly incendiary comments about the Tea Party look even shabbier by comparison.

No! It’s time for Republicans to stop apologizing for comments made. That happens all the time and the Republicans look like sniveling weasels who are constantly unsure of themselves. As you point out, Debbie Downer has not apologized for genuinely incendiary language and will never be held to account for that. Priebus’s remarks were mild compared to DWS. Let them stand as explained.

I highly doubt it. The story would be that the RNC Chair apologized for incendiary rhetoric, without a mention of what Debbie said. The story would build that the RNC is the party of incivility, which the RNC Chair even admits to with his apology for his own comments. Why does anyone think the media will ever give us a pass on these things even if we play by their rules and grovel a bit? Anything can and will be used against you if you're a Rep. It's not just a Miranda warning.
