RNC Chair stands by his comparison of Obama to cruise ship captain

posted at 5:25 pm on January 30, 2012 by Tina Korbe

In case you missed it, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus yesterday compared President Barack Obama to Captain Francesco Schettino, who abandoned the Costa Concordia cruise ship as it was sinking, even though the evacuation of passengers had barely begun.

In an appearance Sunday morning on CBS, Priebus said, “We’re going to talk about our own little Captain Schettino, which is President Obama who’s abandoning the ship here in the United States and is more interested in campaigning than doing his job as president.”

The comments created a mild controversy, as Democrats (and former RNC Chairman Michael Steele) declared that it was inappropriate of Priebus to make the comparison given that at least 16 people died when the Costa Concordia sank. The ever-civil Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz called the remarks “incendiary.” (Oh, the hypocrisy!)

Today, though, Priebus stood by his remarks in an appearance on Fox News:

Pressed about whether the analogy was appropriate considering that the crash killed at least 16 people – with more than a dozen still missing – Priebus stood by the comments.

“The analogy was made and it was an analogy of leadership, that in a time of crisis, this president is leaving the White House and campaigning non-stop all the time,” Priebus said. “I think it’s pretty clear, but if people out there on the Democratic side want to make hay of it they’re going to be able to do it. The reality is that it’s a fair analogy in regard to leadership in a moment of crisis that this president is more interested in his own job, A number 1, than the jobs of millions of Americans out there hurting right now.”

As Allahpundit wrote when the story about Captain Schettino’s gutlessness first broke, Schettino’s actions instantly turned his surname into a byword for cowardice — and it was clearly in the sense of invoking an image of cowardice and selfishness that Priebus used Schettino’s name.

This isn’t a hill to die on, though, and it might have served Priebus better to have said he was sorry to have mentioned Captain Schettino. If nothing else, that would have made DWS’ refusal to apologize for her truly incendiary comments about the Tea Party look even shabbier by comparison.

Schettino abandoned ship because he was more concerned with his own survival than that of the crew and its passengers. Obama has abandoned governing because he is more concerned with his own political survival than the well being of the USA and its citizens. It’s a great analogy.

I am sure it will not be belived, but I made this same comparison on National Review website. Although, I was comparing Obama’s ALLEGED statement that he wasn’t worried about his daughters. They would do OK even if America doesn’t survive.

I thought that statement made Obama seem like the ship captain that was only concerned with himself.

Does anyone know if Obama really said that he wasn’t worried about his daughters because they would do well even if America doesn’t?

This isn’t a hill to die on

I don’t see how the repulicans can die on this hill. The longer the media discusses whether this is a fair comparison, the longer the meme stays out there. It’s a win for the republicans. DWS should have answered differently by saying all the great things Obama has done (like golfing a lot).

The original housing crisis, took down homeowners who were irresponsible. But after the domino effect people who had good credit started losing their jobs. And…then their homes.

It is a liberal preference to lump people with good credit in with people with bad credit.

So, Obama let it all slide, and more people were injured by the recession that started only days before he was elected.

I remember in the lame duck, Bush actually asking Obama questions, and Obama was aloof at the time.

And then when he got into office he acted like it was time to do whatever he wanted, not to stop the economy from sliding.

Do whatever he wanted in a huge stimulus bill that to this day has inflated spending in Washington thru corrupt baseline budget practices.

I think I do agree with Reince. Obama is the captain who did as he damn well pleases.

The Administration has done everything according to plan. The Cloward Piven strategy clearly stated that the only thing standing between the Statists and Americans in particular was the middle class.

It took 3 1/2 years for them to destroy the middle class. Now they are making Americans think that they never were in the middle class to begin with. That the years 1987-2007 ever existed.

Their strategy is to make a promise to put “them back into the middle class that never existed to begin with”.

Bizarre. It won’t work. Not here. Maybe in Kenya, but not here.

Key West Reader on January 30, 2012 at 6:08 PM

I was not at all surprised when he turned out to be the disappointment that he was. I was more in favor of Blackwell, but the RINO estab. just had to have Steele.

I refuse to be part of the charade. Everyone and their mama knows Willard will be the nominee

You are a charade!
(Ohhhhhhh…that’s what you’ve been playing all weekend!)

I lurked for a long time before I got the chance to register. I think I’ve been registered a year or so. It’s been worth the wait, trolls and all.

Um, no. That’s not how it works, Tina.

We’ve been unilaterally apologizing for 20 years, and where has it got us? It makes us look weak and mean (since we’re always doing things that need apologies, apparently).

Some more tough-talking truth-telling is what we need. Bring it on.

Nessuno on January 30, 2012 at 5:36 PM

Something tells me Tina isn’t down for the struggle. She would rather be able to attend all those glitzy parties.

CherryBombsBigBrownBeaver on January 30, 2012 at 6:00 PM

Apparently you had your head in the ground when Obama and Boehner were ready to strike a grand bargain to cut entitlement spending and increase revenue.

The problem wasn’t that Obama and Boehner had abandoned ship- you missed little Eric Cantor screaming from a lifeboat that no deal was acceptable. And you wonder why progress has come to standstill since then? Your understanding of events is less than impressive.

Ok then

Key West Reader on January 30, 2012 at 6:56 PM

A little off-topic, here.

Don’t ask me why, but I flipped the television over to MS-LSD for a moment, and saw an advertisement for – wait for it – Jennifer Granholm’s new show – on Current TV!

What’s even funnier is in the commercial, she says “we” need the Government to give us freedom. Lol, what a statist!!!

And speaking of the Left’s calls for “civility,” the name of Granholm’s show is “The War Room.”

Aizen on January 30, 2012 at 5:39 PM

She destroyed our state in eight years…and they gave her a pension while she teaches in Moonbeam’s state, and a TV show! It pays to be a liberal!
