Video: The greatest guitarist ever?

posted at 6:20 pm on January 28, 2012 by Allahpundit

To cleanse the palate. It must be a comfort to the Metallica guys to know that if anything happens to Kirk, there’s an eight-year-old girl out there who can step in without missing a beat. Good lord.

So this is what happens to Matilda after the book ends, huh?

She’s eight!?! I have a 9yo, a very talented 9yo, who doesn’t hold a candle. Love it. Rock on Mini Band.

I can’t remember it right now. Heard that tidbit many years ago. I’ll see if I can find the source.

Moose Drool on January 28, 2012 at 11:27 PM

Okay, here you go:

Career: Guitarist Billy Gibbons met his future manager, Waxahachie native Bill Mack Ham, backstage at a Doors concert in Houston in 1967. Gibbons’ band at the time, the Moving Sidewalks, had a local hit with the song “99th Floor.” They soon opened on the Doors’ Texas tour. After later opening for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Hendrix named Gibbons his favorite guitar player during an appearance on “The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson.” The Sidewalks broke up and Gibbons and Ham contracted to form a new band.

Greatest guitar player ever: SRV

Greatest living guitar player: David Gilmour

Your honor, the defense rests…

Moose Drool on January 28, 2012 at 6:56 PM

Okay, it’s one thing to say David Gilmour is your favorite guitarist. That’s cool. But trying to claim he’s the greatest living guitarist is just nuts. There are loads of guitarists who are objectively better players. Pat Donohue, Laurence Juber, Antoine Dufour, for example. There are loads of people who could shame him. Yeah, he’s pretty good at what he does, but he doesn’t leave the pentatonic scale very often. Seriously, is he as good as this guy?

I don’t want to sound like a hater, I’m actually a fan of Pink Floyd. But your comment makes me think you need to listen to more music.

I’ll throw three guitar players out of a different sort that can compete with all these guys. Joe Pass, John McLaughlin and Paco DeLucia.

Nice set of guitarists – but I can’t believe that no one has mentioned: Jimi Hendrix (is that verboten?), Jerry Garcia, Duane Allman, Django Reinhardt, Leo Kottke, Richard Thompson, Wes Montgomery, Chet Atkins, Roy Buchanan, Bugs Henderson, Tony Rice, Norman Blake….etcetera

I see where you get the connection to Bach.

I love the way he weaves “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” (Bach) into that solo (followed by Amazing Grace).

Psst! Wolfgang Van Halen. Yeah, you Wolfie. C’mere. I’m thinking your Dad Eddie is still really good and all–a legend right?–but he looks a little tired. Or a little retired, if you catch my drift. There’s this kid I just heard…

John McLaughlin is an awesome player, I can’t think of anyone else that even remotely sounds like him. I love the Mahavishnu Orchestra so much. Nothing gets me going more in the gym. It’s just insanely beautiful music. McLaughlin is from my neck of the woods, north east England.

Sharke on January 29, 2012 at 1:50 AM

While we’re on the subject of music, does anyone have The Goat Rodeo Sessions? I just got that the other day and I cannot stop listening to it, it’s some of the most beautifully colorful music I have ever heard. And if we’re talking pickers here, then Chris Thile’s mandolin playing pretty much blows everyone mentioned above out of the water.

High Tension Wires is a Masterwork

soundingboard on January 29, 2012 at 4:44 AM

Same with Jeff Beck, plus I always enjoyed how he risk’s all by playing with electricity, wrong relationship between any of the components involved and it leads to a major fail. Watched it happen once.

Bmore on January 28, 2012 at 7:44 PM

LOL. Talk about playing with electricity…
New Orleans’ Tad Gormely Stadium. Circa 1976.
Beck’s on stage during a rain storm. The crew put up plastic sheeting in a vain attempt to keep the stage dry.

But after about ten minutes of getting shocked, and cursing every time a pulse hit him, (he WAS pissed) he took off his guitar…and tossed in into the crowd.
The guy who caught it was literally jumping for joy. well, at least for the short period before security came out and retrieved the prize.

I think I would made a bee-line for the exit and hope I could make it out with that beautiful white Strat.

soundingboard on January 29, 2012 at 5:03 AM

It certainly can be nothing but fast notes well played. There are certainly way too many musicians who play fast to show off but have nothing worth listening to.

They’re getting paid by the note. ;)

Well, you can make beautiful music without having perfect technique and without playing fast. There’s no doubt about that.

The Rogue Tomato on January 28, 2012 at 7:56 PM

Yes. The great ones understand that the space between the notes is as important an the notes themselves.

Even the great ones that can pick a hundred miles a minute.

soundingboard on January 29, 2012 at 5:10 AM

Finally, since we’re suggesting some great guitarists let me speak about this. I hadn’t ever heard Steve Morse and he sure is good, not lacking for anything. Of course theres Michael Angelo Batio, Jason Becker and others who have gotten down like that.

Guitar is my second instrument and I find it to be very strange the way guitar players are so satisfied to focus so overwhelmingly on melodic playing. That is to say, I have found playing chords to be very fascinating and satisfying on the guitar and as such I am surprised it is overlooked.

I’ll throw three guitar players out of a different sort that can compete with all these guys. Joe Pass, John McLaughlin and Paco DeLucia.

blockchords on January 28, 2012 at 8:19 PM

Whenever I hear someone touted as a great guitarist, I’ll go to YouTube to check them out. For me, no one tops Jason Becker (admittedly, I’m partial to rock, but he was far more than just a rock guitarist – he had the ability to do it all, unlike someone like say, EVH, who doesn’t have nearly the same senses of aspiration, melody or restraint [Jason wasn't a stereotypical mindless shredder] that Becker did.) Can you imagine where his talent would have taken him if he hadn’t contracted ALS at 20? I put Frank Marino, who foolishly gets written off by many as a Hendrix clone, a very close second on my list. Michael Schenker is up at the top for me, too.

Have you seen any of the YouTube videos with McLaughlin, de Lucia, and Di Meola? From the ones I saw, neither McLaughlin nor Di Meola belonged onstage with de Lucia!

I have to concur with Anton. Randy was doing this at about the same age, and on acoustics as well as electric. Much as I enjoyed SRV, Rhoads was a singular guitar savant.

Zoe clearly has a gift, and many props to her for putting in dedicated time at her age. There’s no way she could make a decent sound from an acoustic with the ultra-light touch of her cute little fingers. Her mom should have her practicing on a 3/4 sized Guild or Martin to increase her pressure and accuracy. Maybe get Steve Howe’s advanced technique course.

Freelancer on January 29, 2012 at 9:08 AM

You guys are kidding, right? That video was so fake. She missed whole bars of music, and it keeps playing when she’s not picking or doing anything that might make the notes. And listen to her crappy rendition of the opening bars of “Sweet Child…”. Awful, and goes on too long.
That being said the 10 best guitarists, in no particular order are SRV, Clapton, EVH, Hendrix, Gilmour, Lifeson, Townshend, Zappa, Vai, Rhodes.

SRV was quoted “I aint no Jimi Hendrix” which is humble and oh so correct (SRV is about as close as we’ll ever see to Hendrix I’ll grant ya that in a heartbeat)

KUDOS to lil MsZoe! She’ll take git-fiddlin a long long WAY!

They’ve already been exploited by their parents who are, at best, trying to live vicariously through them or, at worst, are totally clueless about what rock music and its attendant psychology has done to the youth of Western Civilization.

Cleombrotus on January 29, 2012 at 10:09 AM

Of course we are talking about R&R guitarists. Otherwise we would have to mention Andres Segovia, Stanley Jordan, or Les Paul.

IMHO: I don’t think “the greatest ever” title can be attached to any one person. There are just so many immensely talented people: Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, Pete Townshend . . . the list goes on and on.

How do you narrow it down to just one?

Mangy Scot on January 29, 2012 at 10:44 AM

I think the girls dad belongs to the DMZ. (Dennis Miller Zone). I remember a guy posting the third video last year saying that was his daughter. She’s pretty good.

Mangy Scot on January 29, 2012 at 10:44 AM

Good question.

As you suggested, the idea of “greatest guitarist” is subjective, although it’s still quite comical to see another one of those ’100 Greatest Guitarists!’ lists having people like The Edge, Kurt Cobain, BB King, John Lennon, George Harrison, John Fogerty, and Kirk Hammett in them while excluding/placing them above people like Steve Vai, Michael Schenker, Buddy Guy, Randi Rhoads, Allan Holdsworth, and Steve Howe.

I base my opinion of who’s the best mainly on the guitarist’s versatility, soulfulness/spiritedness, and sense of melody. Technical ability is a bonus, but its not necessary – for instance, I think Peter Green is the greatest white blues guitarist, but he’s not known for his technical prowess like Johnny Winter is, for good reason!

fronclynne on January 29, 2012 at 11:52 AM

Shenanigans!

I hate to be a killjoy, but it seems pretty clear to me that she is NOT actually playing what you are hearing in the second video. She’s going through the motions on a separate pre-recorded track.

Not only does the guitar work start on the audio before she does, watch her right (pick) hand at 41 seconds in, as well as at roughly 1 minute in through 1:20. Her pick motion doesn’t come close to matching the music.

While there is no doubt that she’s excellent, even a prodigy, that second clip does her a massive dis-service, since it’s Milli Vanilli all the way.

VekTor on January 29, 2012 at 12:40 PM

I think this girl will be a monster of rock.
Pretty similar career track was taken by Angus Young.
Born into a family of rock musicians, standing in the wings as his older siblings layed the foundations of R&R.

I hope her parents do the right thing immediately and give her Classical Spanish guitar lessons. Every super guitarist listed in the above comments (besides all the others not even mentioned) had Classical Spanish guitar training. (Rush – “Trust me.”) I’m not saying “pull her out of the band”, but I’m saying if she wants to grow up to become a killer guitarist…that’s right, Classical Spanish guitar training. Martin Barre, Steve Howe, Eric Clapton, Satriani, Jeff Beck, Jan Akkerman, Frank Zappa, Fripp, etc.
