Quotes of the day

posted at 8:45 pm on January 28, 2012 by Allahpundit

“In a call last Sunday morning, just hours after Mr. Romney’s double-digit loss to Mr. Gingrich in the South Carolina primary, the Romney team outlined the new approach to the candidate. Put aside the more acute focus on President Obama and narrow in on Mr. Gingrich.

“Find lines of attack that could goad Mr. Gingrich into angry responses and rally mainstream Republicans. Swarm Gingrich campaign events to rattle him. Have Mr. Romney drop his above-the-fray persona and carry the fight directly to his opponent, especially in two critical debates scheduled for the week…

“By this weekend, Mr. Romney’s aides were on the offensive and increasingly confident, with some combination of their strategy and Mr. Gingrich’s own performance swinging polls in Mr. Romney’s direction. Even as it acknowledged the damage inflicted on Mr. Romney by the past several weeks, his team suggested that it had learned a lesson about never letting up on rivals, especially if Mr. Romney wins the nomination and confronts Mr. Obama in the general election…

“If Mr. Romney does win here on Tuesday, it will have been through a blistering and unrelenting series of attacks.”

***

“[Leading Republican figures] said that if Mr. Gingrich won Florida, they anticipated further efforts to pressure leading Republicans, including former governors like Jeb Bush of Florida and Haley Barbour of Mississippi, as well as officials who passed up presidential runs this year, like Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana, to help build a firewall around Mr. Romney.

“They predicted intensifying criticism of Mr. Gingrich’s record and style, both through the Romney campaign and among conservative commentators who think having Mr. Gingrich as the nominee would sink the party’s chances of winning the White House. If Mr. Romney were to lose badly in Florida, they said, it would inevitably bring new speculation about another candidate jumping into the race, even though it is not immediately apparent who that might be.”

***

“‘We ran a moderate in 1996 and we lost. We ran a moderate in 2008 and we lost,’ Mr. Gingrich on Saturday told a small crowd gathered on the golf course at the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance. ‘I think the only way to defeat Barack Obama is to run a solid, conservative, make-the-case [campaign] for our values, our beliefs, our programs.’…

‘I will go all the way to the convention,’ he said. ‘I expect to win the nomination.’ Asked what his plan was to get there, Mr. Gingrich replied only: ‘State by state.’”

***

“‘You know, I’m running against Speaker Gingrich, for instance, a very nice fellow,’ he said, eliciting some boos from the audience. ‘He’s a historian, but that doesn’t give him the right to rewrite history.’

“‘He was given the opportunity to lead our party,’ Mr. Romney continued, as an audience member interrupted with, ‘He failed!’

“‘You’re right, he failed,’ Mr. Romney said.

“‘We allowed him to lead our party and some of us remember, ‘Oh yeah, the Contract With America, that was a good thing. We took over the House, that was great news,” he continued. ‘What happened four years later? Well, he was fined for ethics violations, he ultimately had to resign in disgrace. He can’t rewrite history. We have to go back and look at history and say he may be a great guy with a lot of great ideas, but he is not the leader we need in a critical time.’”

***

“Chaffetz, a Mitt Romney supporter, has been turning up at Gingrich events during the past two days, though he denied in a brief interview with The Hill that he was doing so in order to goad the former Speaker. He said he was merely there to ‘offer some perspective.’

“But Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond decided it was time to do some goading of his own, as he briefed reporters. Hammond first waved with faux-glee at the Utah congressman and invited him to join the briefing. When Chaffetz ignored him, the spokesman instead marched the press over to where Chaffetz was standing with fellow Romney supporter Bay Buchanan…

“Hammond would not let the matter rest, though, teasing an increasingly uncomfortable Chaffetz that ‘I didn’t even have to pay at a fundraiser to see you — that’s exciting.’

“Hammond continued for several minutes in a similar vein, asking Chaffetz with fake bonhomie, ‘Where are you going next? Do you want our schedule for tomorrow? Are you going to join our charter to Tampa?’”

***

“With polls showing him falling behind rival Mitt Romney in Florida, Newt Gingrich acknowledged on Saturday that he is hoping to siphon votes from another candidate, Rick Santorum.

“‘I have great respect for my good friend Rick Santorum. He’s a terrific person, we’ve known each other for the past 20 years, but the fact is, he’s not going to win in Florida,’ Gingrich told a crowd at the Aloma Baptist Church in Winter Park, Fla. on Saturday evening.

“‘Please just try to convince your friends the only effective practical conservative vote on Tuesday is for Newt Gingrich,’ he said, ‘that’s just a fact.’”

Bmore on January 29, 2012 at 1:51 AM

I found this today. I just linked to it on the previous page. I knew a lot of things in it, but not the donation swing.

http://stevedeace.com/news/iowa-politics/the-case-against-mitt-romney/

It’s written by Steve Baldwin, “former chair of the Right to Life caucus in the California state legislature and executive director of the Council for National Policy,”rips up Romney’s record as governor and then writes:

During the ’08 campaign, a large group of conservative leaders simply went silent on Romney when they should have been aggressively exposing his record. More disconcerting, however, were revelations that some key conservative leaders and groups accepted money from one of Romney’s six PACs and in return, appeared to have endorsed or promoted his candidacy in subtle or not so subtle ways. This support from influential leaders and groups gave Romney badly needed credibility with grass-roots conservatives and allowed him to finish the ’08 effort in a strong position, thus paving the way for him to be the frontrunner he is today.

He cites Federalist Society, Heritage Foundation, National Right to Life (he mentions no money only that he was told by RTL that because Romney filled out their questionnaire correctly, they labeled him as prolife. You and I know that’s ridiculous). He mentions Tony Perkins vouching for Romney, but doesn’t express an opinion or give any reason as to why that was done.

Then he says this about National Review.

“…When in 2008 I criticized National Review for accepting $,5000 from Romney and called this a conflict of interest, NR editor Richard Lowry responded that since the money went to the National Review Institute, there really wasn’t a conflict. Hmm… the same people control both entities, so his argument didn’t fly with me, but Lowry also claimed NR would not endorse a candidate anyhow. But endorse they did and NR placed Romney on its December, ‘07 cover, and boldly claimed he was a conservative superstar. NR and NRO then spent much of the ’08 campaign publishing a slew of inaccurate pro-Romney pieces while ignoring several big stories that portrayed Romney in a negative light.”

Further down:

…To be honest, none of the traditional conservative media outlets have covered Romney’s real record in any meaningful way during either presidential cycle.

Thanks to stupidity, naiveté and conflicts of interest on the right, we have created the Romney monster and given him the credibility he does not deserve….

I think a lot of people think and feel the way you’ve expressed.

I keep a mental log and folders on my laptop and research a lot and read pros & cons of each Candidate. I do more reading than posting. From many different sources, not only Conservative sites, but Democratic sites. This gives me a better perspective, as I can make a better judgement. There are a lot of gifted people here on HA and other sites.

What has this Candidate done? Does his talk match his walk? Then I look to see who are his friends and more importantly who are his enemies. Both reveal a lot about a Candidate. What do they have to gain, if anything by endorsing? That takes time, but is needed.

I’m sure if you keep searching, you’ll come to the best decision.
Not easy, since this has been such a perplexing Primary Season.

I found that donations info I mentioned above corroborated in an AP story from 12/23. I probably missed it then because it was so close to Christmas.

The Romney campaign has said there were no hidden motivations, but it certainly helped him to have it known he supported conservative causes.:

http://news.yahoo.com/romney-charity-used-conservative-donations-185444203.html

Over the past six years and two presidential campaigns, Romney has donated at least $260,000 from his family charity foundation to GOP causes and influential conservative groups that could deepen his ties within the party and establish his credibility on the right….

Between 1999 and 2004, the Romneys’ giving went almost exclusively to non-political charities….

In 2005, around the time that Romney started laying plans for his first presidential campaign, Romney suddenly began directing contributions to influential conservative groups and programs.

Lots of things listed.

Just within the last few days, when asked about the most recent debate – Newt Gingrich complained “I can’t debate with someone who doesn’t tell the truth” WHAT? Does Newt actually believe that Obama will be truthful during the debates? Newt claims the reason why he should be the nominee is due to his saavy debating talent. LOL Sorry, Newt is a big cry baby. Recall the past few months – Romney was the frontrunner when Newt started rising in the polls. Did anyone hear Romney complain about Newt? Granted, Romney had his PAC do the dirty work but only because Newt had NO MONEY (who’s fault would that be?)he claimed he’d run a positive campaign. The very moment Newt rec’d some money – BAM – super pac attack ads against Romney. I am completely shocked that folks are supporting this desperation. Many Newt supporters claiming to sit out in Nov 2012 if Romney is the nominee sounds eerily familiar to Newt complaining he might not participate in future debates if the audience is required to stay quiet. First that juvenile attempt, now he complains that the audience was stacked with Romney supporters. OMG folks, are you really supporting him?

BabysCatz on January 29, 2012 at 2:30 AM

I think you’re missing Palin’s point. When you have most of the beltway establishment attacking Newt, it isn’t much of fair fight. the malicious lies that Romney keeps peddling have really turned me off to him, he’s literally just saying things to see if they stick, at least if you are going to attack somebody, do it in a straightforward manner like Santorum does(save the moon jab), i don’t like the guy, he’s a phony, he’s not conservative, he literally has no conservative credentials to tout in the public sector so he just bobs and weaves and uses jibberish to deflect from any question, as if we’re so dim-witted that fancy jargon will satisfy basic questions like:

is romneycare the basis for obamacare?

have you supported democrats in elections against republicans?

did you support abortion when you were running for and served as a gov?

did you own shares of fannie and freddie in a non-blind trust?

did you support, and do you continue to support cap and trade?

do you believe in global warming?

did you work to restrict gun-ownership as gov?

did you refer to yourself as a “progressive” when running for gov?

all those questions have a yes answer, but he will lie and deflect to change it,even worse than this, is he has no core principles or convictions, merely a chameleon who changes color depending on the audience, conservatives will not support him, they will make no effort to campaign or help him, at the most, they will hold their nose and push the lever, but that’s about it, he is MCcain 2.0

“…When in 2008 I criticized National Review for accepting $,5000 from Romney and called this a conflict of interest, NR editor Richard Lowry responded that since the money went to the National Review Institute, there really wasn’t a conflict.”

Steve Baldwin, “former chair of the Right to Life caucus in the California state legislature and executive director of the Council for National Policy,”

I didn’t know one could bribe the National Review so cheaply. No, wait: they can’t. I don’t believe for a moment NR prostitutes its name and reputation for any amount of money. Besides, a $5000 payoff for a presidential endorsement would be insulting coming from Mitt Romney, a man whose personal fortune is estimated to be worth $200 million, chump change.

No, National Review came out against Gingrich partly because Gingrich is a sure loser against Obama in the general election and partly (I think) because the late Bill Buckley privately detested Gingrich–especially for the hypocrisy Gingrich displayed during the Clinton impeachment scandal. Buckley didn’t separate public figures from scandalous private lives, feeling that public service and private immorality were incompatible, a typically conservative view until recently. Nowadays, not so much.

If people are willing to overlook Gingrich’s 16+ year history of stabbing conservatives in the back, to turn a blind eye to why we conservatives ousted him as Speaker, to pretend he hasn’t spent his entire career walking a fine ethical line, to pretend he hasn’t spent the last 35 years in Washington working his way into “the establishment” (including since 1999 as a private citizen, since he stuck around to peddle influence after resigning), and the fact no political figure has ever maintained the consistently negative approval rating in polls as he, well, there just isn’t anything to say to them, is there? EXCERPT from the Gateway Pundit post: “Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi who’s fighting to repeal ObamaCare appeared on Greta, tonight, defending RomneyCare. She says Romney’s health care plan is not the same as ObamaCare and, in fact, Romney’s plan reduces costs. She goes on to say that Romney wants all states to impose similar laws (including mandates) and that she and is all for it.

She went on to explain that she’s going to be on Romney’s Health Care Advisory Team when he’s president!

What this means is that while Romney may say he wants to repeal ObamaCare, he actually agrees with it. He believes that RomneyCare, ie, ObamaCare is a model health care plan and all states should impose similar plans.

RomneyCare and ObamaCare are the same thing. The only difference is that Romney’s was imposed at the state level where Obama’s was imposed nationally.

RomneyCare = ObamaCare = taxpayer funded abortion = death panels = socialism = government force = fascism = tyranny!!

So Romney and his co-conspirators in the GOP establishment are now planning a National Healthcare Task Force to impose top-down government run national healthcare on all 50 states!!”

You know what? When it’s down to Romney vs Obama, and the media start to slap Romney around like a hockey puck, it’s going to be SO hard not to root for the media. I don’t think I’m alone in that. “Politics ain’t beanbag” and all that.

ddrintn on January 29, 2012 at 7:20 AM

I’m having a hard time understanding why conservatives who are so completely sick of their party trying to appease the left, are considering supporting a man whose sole political achievement was to be elected governor running as a Progressive.

Don’t you folks realize that political talk is cheap, and that you have to judge politicians by their performance?

Mitt Romney’s ACU rating as governor of Massachusetts was 55. That’s not nearly as bad as Obama, but it’s not conservative. It’s not even really right of center. Just because he’s selling himself as a conservative to win the nomination, do you really think he’s going to govern from the right, when the last time he did it, he governed from the center?

philwynk on January 29, 2012 at 7:24 AM

He’s running right until the nomination and then he’ll steer hard left. Wait and see. When his numbers crash rock bottom he’ll begin adopting leftist policies. He’s a windsock, they do that. The eventual President will be the one promising the most freebies.

cmsinaz on January 29, 2012 at 7:56 AM

Here’s the thread in a nutshell……

Romney Sucks. Gingrich Sucks.
Santorums 3 yr old girl in hospital. Prayers please. Keep it civil.
Romney sucks a little. Gingrich sucks a little.

Thank you, ma’am.

cmsinaz on January 29, 2012 at 7:56 AM

Well, Mitt used fotoage of Tom Brokaw without permission, in an attack ad against Newt, Cain endorsed Newt, Judge Pirro cut Sarah off last night on Fox, and the Mittbots acted like the south ends of northbound mules all day here.

In other words, just a typical day. By the way, pray for the Santorum family and Little Bella who had to be admitted to the hospital last night.

kingsjester on January 29, 2012 at 8:02 AM

At least Mittens is vicious and shows no mercy to his opponents.

But then again…..I thought McCain meant it when he said “FIGHT WITH ME friends”. And look what that got us.

Newt knows that if Santorum drops out after Florida that Santorums voters will NOT be going for Mitty. So he should stay in the race for awhile and toughen up Willard.

Another republican race where we don’t get a Conservative nominee it looks like. Ya gotta hand it to the Ruling class in the party, as long as they split the Conservative vote and run their pick it works like a charm. They get their nominee EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Go Mitt!!!

Don’t forget, Rush, Hannity, Levin and Michael Reagan are lying too. Oh, and Nancy Reagan was lying when that video was made too. But we can all trust Tom Brokaw. So vote for Mitt with the proven conservative record.

“‘Please just try to convince your friends the only effective practical conservative vote on Tuesday is for Newt Gingrich,’ he said, ‘that’s just a fact.’” – Newt

Well, we’re stuck with whom are stuck.
In a two-way race, Gingrich IS the only conservative.
Santorum should feel free to disengage any time now. All he’s doing is keeping votes from Newt. There are already enough ancient, brain-addled transplants in Florida for Mittens to suck up to:
Granny Villages – “Oh that Mitt Romney, he looks like such a nice young man”.
Sure

I think Romney is going to lose badly now to Obama. We’ve never nominated a candidate this liberal before, not even McCain was this awful in terms of lack of conservative support. You got to have the majority of your own party somewhat excited for your nominee, you can’t rely on just raw hatred of Obama to put Romney over the top. That’s just a stupid way to try to win elections.

The best way to do it is to nominate somebody who can contrast himself with Obama on most if not all of thte issues. Romney isn’t that guy.

Dr. Tesla on January 29, 2012 at 1:44 AM

I agree. If he’s nominated, he needs the conservatives to turn out in droves. They won’t and Mr. RINO will indeed lose, as McLame did before. The republican establishment has a death wish.

I agree completely with all of this. Obviously the Mittbots are excited, but they don’t seem to care that many others are not.

And I’ve been reading a number of comments on several sites saying they loathe Romney but will vote for whoever opposes Obama. Personally I don’t see the point in replacing one rabid liberal who only has four years left at the most with another rabid liberal who could have up to eight years to do what he wants, but that’s just me.

It does seem at times that the right-of-center media are busy doing the same things for Romney that the MSM were busy doing for Obama.

If people are willing to overlook Gingrich’s 16+ year history of ……..

Adjoran on January 29, 2012 at 6:29

Uhm, that says more about Romney than anyone else.

Marcus on January 29, 2012 at 7:09 AM

Exactly. Maybe Romney’s supporters might stop and ask themselves WHY people are willing to overlook Gingrich’s many shortcomings.

They won’t, of course; I’m just sayin’.

Or, we need tepid Obama supporters to stay home or crossover in droves. I’m concerned that Newt, with his baggage, and his abrasive personality, and the high likelihood he will attempt to make personal attacks on Obama, will mobilize Obama voters that would otherwise stay home, just like Palin on the ticket would mobilize the left’s base. Romney is not threatening to most Obama supporters. Having Romney on the ticket will not mobilize Obama’s base. Newt probably will.

Oh, wait, you weren’t talking about Newt?
