Roller coaster continues: Mitt up by 9 in Florida
posted at 9:50 am on January 27, 2012 by Jazz Shaw
If it’s Tuesday, this must be Belgium. But it’s actually Friday, so it must still be Florida. And with another day we get another fresh round of polling showing one of two things: either the good citizens of Florida are prone to fits of multiple personality disorder or the pollsters are just having some fun with us. Close on the heels of Romney being up, then Newt being up, then it being essentially a tie, then trending back in Romney’s favor, Quinnipiac tells us that Mitt is surging back into the lead.
Just four days before the nation’s first big-state presidential primary, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney opens up a 38 – 29 percent lead over former House Speaker Newt Gingrich among Republican likely voters in Florida, according to a Quinnipiac University poll taken Wednesday and released today. Only 6 percent are undecided, but 32 percent say they might change their mind by Tuesday.
This compares to results of a January 25 survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University, showing Romney with 36 percent of likely primary voters to Gingrich’s 34 percent. Wednesday’s survey showed Gingrich ahead 40 – 34 percent among voters surveyed after the South Carolina primary.
Ron Paul takes the bronze medal with 14% and Rick Santorum is bringing up the rear at 12. These results are looking more solid, though, given that the numbers match up pretty well with this poll from VSS which gives the nod to Mitt over Newt 40 to 31.
As previously noted, this does seem to be in keeping with the most recent trend, but the changes have been rapid. In the demographics department, the big shift here is along gender lines. Men, who were backing Newt 37 to 33 in a similar poll only 48 hours earlier, now line up in favor of Mitt 36 to 29 against Gingrich. Romney’s favorability numbers are back up also, rising to a 60 to 28 break point.
The first release didn’t include the full cross-tabs (though I’m sure Ed will get them before long) but since the two data points we’re looking at both come from the same polling firm, they’re probably similar. This is a rapid and rather dramatic shift, but it does continue the most recent trend. After dipping in the polls following Gingrich’s strong showing in South Carolina, Mitt seems to be clawing his way back up. Last night’s debate probably won’t change that much either, given most of the buzz I’m seeing about Newt mostly falling flat. Four days to go… hang on to your hats!

After last night’s debate, Mittens looks to capture FL and coast to super Tuesday in good shape. His new debate coach really helped in turning his image around. Nootie looked visibly stunned by Mittens performance. Santorum was nice and scrappy; and even Paul looked saner!

At this point, it’s who reeks less. And that never won an election because the other guy has a base who thinks he smells pretty sweet. Karl Rove will be pale as a ghost when the week after the Tampa Convention for the first time probably in our history, there is 0 bounce.

This is what happens when Gingrich is forced to debate an actual person instead of attacking those who are restricted from fighting back.

These wild swings suggest to me the electorate is quite informed and engaged, reacting to things they learn quickly.. And I think plugged into alternative media, otherwise Newt never would have surged. I take this as a good development all in all.

Of course, it’s hard to seize the momentum if you’re, er, going to PA to do taxes. He oughta stay and see if he can’t eat into Gingrich’s numbers more.
changer1701 on January 27, 2012 at 10:15 AM
I don’t know. I just shake my head when I see these swings in the polls. People moving so quickly from one candidate to the other looks a little fickle given the importance of the issue and, one would suppose, the individuals core beliefs. I can see someone’s opinion of a candidate develop or change over time as the campaign season drags on, but changes from one day to the other is curious to see.

Question to Newtbots:
What happened last night to the famed debater, Gingrich, who was going to totally school Obama in the debates?
Do you see how foolish it is to pick a nominee based on supposed strength in the debates?
It is equally foolish for the GOP to pick Romney based on supposed electability. At this point, he has turned off a great number of conservative voters that I am predicting he will perform worse than McCain ever did.
Rhetoric can never beat Obama, only a soild record will. And there was only one candidate that had that record to beat Obama – Gov. Perry.
Alas, conservatives/tea partiers rejected him for the famed debater, who has now been revealed to be anything but.

I was a Perry guy when he entered the race, and I think he got a raw deal…the Gardasil crap was over the top, and Palin fans seemed hostile to him for, I guess, taking her presumed spot in the race.
But, record notwithstanding, he just wasn’t up to the task. I don’t know if it was the late entry, or the back surgery, or whatever, but I don’t think he would’ve done well against Obama.
changer1701 on January 27, 2012 at 10:30 AM
Last election, I voted for Senator McCain, with whom I disagreed on many issues but considered (and consider) a great American. It burned a little to read some of the scathing attacks coming at him from people calling themselves conservatives, few or none of whom could match either his patriotism or accomplishments, and with some of them claiming they wouldn’t vote for him–or anyone–at all, deciding to stay at home on election day and doing their part to ensure Obama’s victory.
There is a strong likelihood Romney will win the GOP nomination, and I’m hearing the same things all over again from pretty much the same people. For my part, if Newt Gingrich somehow pulls the rabbit out of the hat and wins the GOP nomination, I’ll make the calls and knock on the doors and drive people to the polls just as I did for McCain, and I’ll vote for Newt Gingrich–and I absolutely loathe Newt Gingrich. Can’t stand the guy.
I’m a Republican and I want to win. And those of you capital-c Conservatives who say you’re staying home on election day out of pique or spite? It’s a free country, so do what you like and shut up about it. Great Americans fought, suffered and died to give you the vote. If you don’t vote, you don’t matter.

PatriotGal2257 on January 27, 2012 at 10:33 AM
This is very frustrating to me. Mitt Romney does not inspire confidence; he always sounds like a 10-year old boy trying to explain his oft-changing point of view. If he wins the nomination, which I hope he does not, he will never survive the attacks during the general election. He’s a nervous sort, and he makes me nervous – not the trait I want in a presidential candidate. He reminds me of an action figure doll – when you remove the costume, he’s just another naked Ken doll. There is nothing there. Say what you want about Rick Perry, but you always knew his guns were real. And he knew how to fire them. I’m not even sure they let Mitt keep a bullet in his pocket, much less that he’d know what to do with it if he found it there.

RightMan,
Romney kept his boot heel on Perry, and made sure he couldn’t catch a break. You see how Astroturfed we are by the Romney campaign here on this board, imagine everywhere else that got constantly, over and over and over again, reminded of “heartless” and “oops.” Likely done by smarter Mittstroturfers than the idiots who came in on the last open registration.
The way I see it, folks are going to be royally POed when the general election rolls around, and it’s not the cakewalk the Romney campaign has implicitly promised it would be with him on top of the ticket. My hope is that the drop in revenues and volunteers will force Romney to bow down, grovel, and get out of the reformers’ way, despite his being promoted by the establishment to block the reformers.

After Tuesday the Dems know with certainty whom the GOP nominee will be, while the GOP candidate– moving even faster to the center half a year out from the general– still has to scurry around the country to make sure he clinches it, technically, appealing to an increasingly disengaged and unenthusiastic base. Very clever of the GOP to insure the nominee of 6 months of slogging tedium, and the Dems an extra 6 months to pound his poll numbers into the ground during the same time.
Prediction: By the end of February, GOP voter turn-out hits record lows, and media coverage diminishes to dutifully reporting the results, but not the campaign. At one time I thought the shock to the GOP would be a much-lower-than-expected post-convention bump for the nominee, against a President who is running even or somewhat ahead. Now I’m wondering if by mid/late-summer the grim realization sets in that, even with a big post-convention bump, there’s no way he can catch up.
This goes for either Romney or Gingrich.

Santorum can still win this if all the people who like him would support him and vote for him. The meme that this is either Newt or Mitt is ridiculous. Both are progressives and both are being pushed by different sides of the party establishment. Both have advocated policies embraced by Obama. Both will lose the general. Mitt will just lose by less than Gingrich. Gingrich will lose in a landslide and take the down ballot with him. Mitt or Newt is a false choice and it is not conservatives only choice. I did my share of research on him (who do you trust for the truth anymore) and watched, and listened. The above quote fits in with typical Gingrich voters who are anti-capitalist.
here is a snippet of Larry Kudlow’s responses to Gingrich as they look similar to the above quote:
Highlights Of Larry Kudlow Tonight on Newt Gingrich:
Larry Kudlow: “I mean, this sounds like you’re going back to the attacks on free market capitalism.” (CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report,” 1/26/12)
Kudlow: “It just sounds like the language of the left.” (CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report,” 1/26/12)
Kudlow: “But I think–you know, Speaker, I think that George W. Bush never used this hostile language to investment and business. Certainly Ronald Reagan never singled out investment funds and attacked them.” (CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report,” 1/26/12)
Kudlow: “Or is it just political expediency and opportunism where you’re giving up your principles that I thought you and I shared?” (CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report,” 1/26/12)
Kudlow: “I think it sounds like the language of the left.” (CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report,” 1/26/12)
Kudlow: “But when you use that language, you sound like, pardon the phrase, President Obama or the left wing of the Democratic Party. That’s what’s disappointed, Newt, that’s what disappointed many of your conservative supporters during this campaign.” (CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report,” 1/26/12)
Kudlow: “You know your Bain Capital thing is driving me crazy, Newt, you know that, and I’ve got to put it out from the heart.” (CNBC’s “The Kudlow Report,” 1/26/12)

Perhaps both? Perry was over-hyped on entry and subsequently failed to live up to the over-expectations. Of course his every gaffe and misstep was amplified over and over by the Romney campaign (and the Bachman campaign, which likely comes to the same thing), but Perry made them, which, along with several really, really bad debate moments, quickly brought him down to earth, and then buried him. I don’t underestimate the ruthlessness of the Romney machine, but Perry wasn’t prepared to withstand it at all. Even with all of his baggage and even bigger self-inflicted wounds, Newt’s managed to hold out against it a little longer, if not a lot better.

I wonder if Newt would like a one on one debate with Santorum? I bet not.
The number one reason Gingrich has been doing well is because people think he would beat Obama in a debate. People overlook his progressive big government tendencies, his serial adultery, his leaving two wives when the were diagnosed with serious illness, his nutty ideas and his years of influence peddling; all because he “would beat Obama in a debate.” Well, Newt’s two Florida debates should debunk that notion. He was awful. In the first debate, he blamed the fact on the audience not being able to cheer. In last night’s debate he blamed Romney’s campaign for “packing the audience.” The fact is, Gingrich is not a good debater. He is a carnival barker. And it was probably his supporters who packed the debates in SC. I have noticed that Newt likes to blame others for doing things that he actually does. Like the illegal involvement of a candidate with his SuperPac.
The faster republicans see him for the fraud that he is, the more likely it becomes for a principled conservative to rise up to beat Romney for the nomination.

They should have supported Santorum from the beginning but were distracted by everyone BUT Santorum. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Oops sums it up nicely.

Because, contrary to what a lot of people believe, Newt is an establishment candidate. Newt is being pushed by so-called conservative establishment. Newt is just their spit in the eye to the RINO establishment. They know he can’t win and they know he is awful and not a conservative but they don’t care. They just want to tick off the other wing of the GOP. Lost in this party food fight are conservative principles. Palin, who led this Newt train, just wants to get back at the media and the part of the republican establishment which treated her so badly. The problem is, by supporting Gingrich, she is just playing the same game.
What happens to this country has become secondary to a republican turf war where everyone is jockeying for position.
IMO, 2012 will be the last election with just two viable parties. The people have finally, I believe, had enough of this party monopoly. You would have thought, with the country in such terrible shape, that they would not be playing the same old games that led us here.

DumboTheAvenger,
Good point. I must admit, I know nothing for certain these days, but my gut instinct is usually pretty good. The one thing that bothered me about Perry is this: his instincts were dull. He thought he could just jump in the race as late as he did and take right off. It seemed that he wasn’t prepared for the battle he entered. I hope he spends the next few years becoming battle-ready.

Could it just be that those that worked with him are telling us how REALLY is?
We all have had jobs before where the employer calls up the previous employer to find out about the employee. The members of Congress are speaking loud and clear BY NOT SAYING Anything with their support! The former members are giving us the BUYER BEWARE!

Instead of relying on the attack ads on Newt, try reading some of the great articles from those that were actually present during the years of Reagan & Newt. That way you would have a better perspective.

.
National polls show Oblamer slaughtering Newton- but 4-5points (Only) ahead of the Mittigater. And that is before consolidation of the Rs behind a single candidate.
.
Doesnt really matter though. Ross Perot gave us Bill Clinton by getiing 20 million votes, where clinton won by 5-6 million.
Ron Paul will give the Candy man 4 more yrs if he decides to sacrifice Rand’s future if/when he goes 3rd party.

Newt can’t win, but Romney can? Riiiiiiiiight.
Hard Right on January 27, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Oh, and polls showing obama beating anyone right now is just ridiculous. Romney will get demolished by obama. Newt will at least give him a fight.
Hard Right on January 27, 2012 at 11:40 AM
I agree. No one in my circle is talking about Newt’s bedroom or personal life. We have bigger fish to fry and the voters know this.
That’s why it doesn’t matter, period.

Newt is the biggest insider and establishment candidate running. The reason a lot of members of the House and Senate are not coming out for Newt is because they don’t like him and know that he is erratic. He is not likable.
Please read my reply to rhombus. I have been in GOP party politics for decades and i can tell you that Newt is an establishment candidate.
And your knowledge of what Newt did before is not accurate. During his time as Speaker, pork increased substantially. And Newt entered congress being worth 10,000 dollars and left being worth millions.

..some interesting assertions here. Bound to rankle; not sure these are incorrect.

I think you are right. It’s taking our freedoms for granted that have brought us to the brink. The Iraqis & Afghans are tasting freedom and it’s like a match to gasoline, explosive! Hope they can endure.
God Bless you as you serve and put your life on the line. May God keep his Angels watching over you and return you safe & sound.
As you serve there, all Americans should serve here.
