Video: A people’s history of “Star Wars”

posted at 7:13 pm on January 25, 2012 by Allahpundit

To cleanse the palate, via Time, behold a supernova of global nerdery — as if millions of geeky voices cried out in excitement and then decided to start recording themselves acting out “Star Wars.” The concept here was simple: The movie was cut into 15-second chunks and then pieced out to anyone and everyone who wanted to participate. The participants filmed themselves re-enacting their snippet — in any format they wanted — then e-mailed it back to the producers to be stitched together into a full-length re-creation of the film. I can’t believe anyone’s sat through the whole thing, as it quickly starts to feel hallucinatory, but skip around and see where the collective imagination takes you. In a way, this is the ultimate tribute to the movie’s global cultural ubiquity: You can’t judge a snippet unless you know the film for reference, but of course literally everyone knows the film. It’s an in-joke shared by several billion people.

Hmm. Watch this or have my testes fed into a blender and pureed.

I’ll be right back.

(Sound of blender turning on.)

I got to say, I have never watched any star wars movies and for the life of me, I couldn’t name any critter in the movies. Now, I guess I need to be put off someplace where no one goes?

Over two hours? When I get so desperate for something to do that I have to spend two hours on this, I’ll just join Get a Life Anonymous.

“Hello. My name is Predator, and I have no life.”

Group response: “Hi, Predator.”

Ok, at 7:35-7:45 or there abouts. It’s stop motion animation where the characters are cut out faces attached to liquor bottles marching down a bar. If you combine this thread with the mushroom thread from yesterday, even AP might see God.

How’d they get a 2 hour+ video onto YouTube?

I wore a Darth Vader costume to a temple Purim Party in ’77(never mind that I was a little GIRL)despite the rabbi having a fit over it and still have some of the ORIGINAL Star Wars cards-the kind that came in packs with the gross gum.
You’re jealous. Admit it. LoL

malclave on January 25, 2012 at 7:40 PM

I second the question of the two hours in one video. If I wanna see a movie, it’s broken down in eight parts or something. Anyhoo kiddo must see this instead of being immersed in Minecraft, which I hate with a passion-the other three are deep into this imaginary Lego-like computing software world.

He won’t watch the whole thing but he will be quite amused.

I saw the original Star Wars in a theater in 1977 – that was enough for me. I can proudly say that I have not watched any Star Wars movie since.

Kensington on January 25, 2012 at 7:47 PM

Never got the Star Wars hype. Good series of movies (4-6)? Yup. So good that as an amalgam it should be one of the biggest pop culture/nerd culture phenomena ever (perhaps the SINGLE biggest)? Not even close.

At least recently there have been a lot of good video games. In the 90′s, it was Shadows of the Empire, the SNES games, or bust.

Axe on January 26, 2012 at 4:45 AM

Be advised that this is not the original screenplay, but the sorry, rehashed, reworked, artistically reprobate, unconscionable, greedy, sickening, cynical, obsessive, monstrous, disgusting, monkey-feces flinging re-imagined screenplay vomited from the mouth of madness that Lucas became after thinking it appropriate to have Greedo shoot first.

Or so I’m told by a rabid purist.

Strangely — I’m also told, because I wouldn’t know myself — Greedo does shoot first in this, making it inconsistent to boot.

Pozers. I’m told.
