CBS poll: America’s got a fee-vah and the only prescription is more Obama SOTU platitudes; Correction: Poll outdated

posted at 9:47 pm on January 25, 2012 by Allahpundit

Granted, granted, their sample is a ludicrous 44% Democrat and 25% Republican. And yes, it’s true that this guy is recycling his talking points from one speech to the next, year after wearying year. But hey: Last year just 83 percent approved of his SOTU remarks. He’s up nearly 10 points this time go round. With that sort of wind in his sails, I’m thinking instead of the 43 percent job approval he currently holds, come November he might be all the way up to 45 percent.

Two data points from CBS’s poll to give you some insight into the savviness of their sample group. Bear in mind, he devoted exactly 44 words last night to ObamaCare:

Another data point: “Eighty-three percent approved of Mr. Obama’s proposals regarding Afghanistan, which received only a 57 percent approval rating beforehand.” A 26-point jump on a 10-year-old war thanks to an hour of bromides. See now why he writes these things at an eighth-grade level?

For a more interesting and credible poll showing (mild) good news for The One, go look at the numbers in the new WSJ/NBC survey. His job approval is still below 50 percent but views of the economy are improving. Needless to say, the more optimistic voters are, the more difficult it’ll be for Romney or Gingrich in the fall. Exit question: Does it matter what percentage liked the speech if virtually no one saw it?

Update: I saw the CBS poll circulating online today and didn’t stop to check the date: It’s from, er, January 25, 2011, not 2012. Apologies for the mistake; evidently I’m reading at a second-grade level. Still interesting to compare the overwhelming support he got for last year’s SOTU to where his job approval is now, though. These speeches make a splash initially and then they disappear into the ether.

The wallets will do the talking in November, and there’s a lot of time for PBHO to work more of his fiscal magic before then. The SOTU will be long forgotten, high gas and food prices, right there in the face of every American.

It’s not surprising his SOTU approval is up to 92%. More people hate him so less people who disagree watched him leaving only the Obama-nuts to be polled. Presto, 92% approval.

crazywater on January 25, 2012 at 9:54 PM

With this, as with debates and so on, it’s not the speech itself, but the way it’s hangover informs the general discussion. I didn’t see either of the South Carolina debates, but I knew that Newt had “won” them, this grabbing momentum from Romney.

There’s only so much long-term benefit that can be expected from any State of the Union, but if people generally get the feeling that it was “successful,” that he talked about jobs, that he appeared “bipartisan” and that he was proud of the troops, it will give him a tiny bump.

No it doesn’t matter at all, but not because virtually no one saw it. It’s because no one will remember it. Just like no one remembers last year’s speech – obvious since it the speech he gave yesterday was so similar to the last one.

I promise you in another couple of days, everyone who took that poll will recall not one memorable phrase. They won’t even be able tell you the gist of the speech.

It’s better to let individuals pursue their passions and interests. As everyone’s allowed to pursue their own passions and interests then these so-called problems will gradually be resolved much more effectively than if the government tries to do it.

When government does it, it pushes individuals out of it and the government simply does not have the real-world motivation and accountability factors which greatly enhance the chance of success. As a result, Government will spend too much, fail and typically create new problems in their attempt to just resolve 1 issue.

This reminds me of those great polls Saddam used to take where he claimed 99 percent approval or something.

I mean, 30 percent is not going to approve of the president no matter what he says. So anything over 70 percent is impossible. Getting anywhere even near 70 percent is ALMOST impossible. More likely he might have gotten 55-60 percent support if his speech was a WILD success.

Really, he should be happy with anything over 50.

The real number is likely to be slightly under 50.

By claiming 92 percent… CBS just told everyone they’re a propaganda mill… with math.

Knock off the defeatism. I know exactly how you feel, but the state and local races are vastly more important than anything on the federal level. States are going to stop funding Fedzilla in order to save themselves. We need good governors, state legislators, and state/local officials in place to manage the clawback process. It’s a financial inevitability, and it will happen whether we elect Obama, Romney, or Gingrich. Get involved in your local Tea Party and make a real difference for your locality and your state. We can seriously win this fight in just a few years. It’s like Stalingrad. The feds have overextended themselves to the point that, even though they’re in our faces, we’ve actually got the upper hand. They don’t have the resources to win anymore, and the tide is about to turn in our favor.

but views of the economy are improving.

Do these people buy groceries? Fill up gas tanks? Buy clothes?

This year is going to be so surreal.

I didn’t ask, I was kinda … shocked. She was pretty upset at it as well.

Seriously, folks. The era of big government is over. They can’t sustain it anymore, because the money just isn’t there. Sure, they’ll keep printing as long as they can, but think about this: the only reason they’re printing money is because no one will lend them money anymore. It’s the only thing they have left. It’s the last, heaving gasp of a dinosaur about to keel over. Yes, it’ll squash a bunch of us when it falls, but the real economy and the real America will dig out and start over, just like always. We’re Americans. We can do this.

Nom de Boom on January 25, 2012 at 10:38 PM

You folks may or may not think I am an extremist or alarmist, but does anyone see the real problem here?

The real problem being this poll actually putting out these numbers as approval of the One’s speech being in Kim Jung Il’s and Saddam Hussein’s re-election number ranges….AND actually putting them out with some expectation that they are credible….

These are tyrant approval ratings…

This is troubling…and it AIN’T funny.

I am the eight percent. – DavidW

Excellent.

I wonder, did they screen this sample for respondents who actually watched the speech and managed to stay awake? If so then the sample was skewed toward lonely types who really have run out of things to do with their time.

If I were her, I wouldn’t waste one thin dime on that kind of “education.” And if my daughter started to buy into the propaganda, we’d just have to get on a plane to China to go talk to some dissidents and house church Christians to get the real story. Call it a semester abroad.

Nom de Boom on January 25, 2012 at 10:40 PM

LOL…92%? 98% of the 92% were actually watching American Idol.

Who said OWS had no impact? We are not even talking about deficit reductions anymore. Someone said to me at work today ” by July, all Obama will have to do is say to Congress: Where are the bills you were supposed to send me on insider trading and manufacturing tax cuts and Re-employment system and tax cuts for companies coming back? and turn to the cam and say: See America??”

On the republican side of life today:

- Mitt said that the SOTU included some of his ideas and that he’s glad to hear the One embracing them (while we are saying it’s a reboiled vomit from list last speeches). So Romney claiming credit for what Obama proposed last night. (Why not?!?! pfftt)

- Newt proposed to #OTM (Occupy the moon)….that says it all I think.
