Quotes of the day

“President Obama pledged on Tuesday night to use government power to balance the scale between America’s rich and the rest of the public, seeking to present an election-year choice between his continued leadership toward an economy ‘built to last’ and a Republican argument that the country would benefit from less federal intervention.”

***

“‘On these evenings, Presidents naturally seek to find the sunny side of our national condition,’ Daniels said. ‘But when President Obama claims that the state of our union is anything but grave, he must know in his heart that this is not true.’…

“‘The mortal enemies of Social Security and Medicare are those who, in contempt of the plain arithmetic, continue to mislead Americans that we should change nothing,’ Daniels said.”

American hostage in Somalia rescued by US Navy SEALs in overnight raid
Jan 25 2012-18 Mins ago
***********************

WASHINGTON — In a daring nighttime raid Tuesday, U.S. Navy SEALs rescued two hostages, including one American, who were being held by kidnappers in Somalia, U.S. officials tell NBC News.

American Jessica Buchanan, 32, and a 60-year-old Dane, Poul Thisted, were working for a Danish relief organization in northern Somalia when they were kidnapped last October. U.S. officials described their kidnappers as heavily armed common criminals with no known ties to any organized militant group.

According to the U.S. officials, two teams of Navy SEALs landed by helicopter near the compound where the two hostages were being held. As the SEALS approached the compound on foot gunfire broke out, the U.S. officials said, and several of the militants were reportedly killed. There is no word that any of the Americans were wounded.(More…)

First convictions from Fast and Furious gun probe
January 24, 2012
****************

PHOENIX – Two men pleaded guilty to buying guns that were destined to be smuggled into Mexico, the first convictions in the federal government’s botched Operation Fast and Furious.

The men were so-called “straw buyers” who acknowledged purchasing guns that they knew were headed to Mexican drug gangs.

The goal of the federal government’s investigation was to catch weapons-trafficking kingpins, but firearms agents lost track of many weapons they were trying to trace to smuggling ringleaders, and some guns ended up at crime scenes in Mexico and the U.S.

Jacob Wayne Chambers and Jacob Anthony Montelongo each pleaded guilty in federal court Monday to a conspiracy charge. Montelongo also pleaded guilty to dealing guns without a license.

The pair admitted being part of a 20-person smuggling ring that is accused of running guns into Mexico for use by the Sinaloa drug cartel.

Two rifles bought by the ring were found at the scene of a December 2010 shootout near the Arizona-Mexico border that mortally wounded Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. The two guns weren’t purchased by Chambers and Montelongo and instead were bought by another alleged ring member.

The investigation is the focus of an inquiry by congressional Republicans.

O/T,…Liberal allegations in Arkansa!!!

Arkansas Democrat campaign manager’s cat killed, ”liberal” written on it
Jan 24 2012 5:04PM
**********************
**********************

Russellville, Ark. (KFSM) — Russellville police are searching for the person accused of killing a cat and writing the word “liberal” on the body.

The animal’s owner, Jacob Burris, serves as campaign director for Ken Aden. Aden, a Democrat, is running for Arkansas’ 3rd Congressional District.

“Anybody that does that is just a coward,” said Burris.

Aden will take on incumbent Rep. Steve Womack (R-Arkansas) in November.

Below is a press release from Ken Aden’s campaign website:
———————————————————-

“It is one thing to engage in civil political discourse, and for Republicans and Democrats to disagree with each other, which is an expected part of the political process. Taking it to this level is beyond unacceptable,” Aden said.

While the campaign between Aden and incumbent Congressman Steve Womack has heated up in recent months,

Aden said they did not believe the Womack campaign to be responsible. “Although we have certainly disagreed and engaged in a great deal of civil discourse, I do not believe in any way that Congressman Womack or his campaign

had anything to do with this incident,” Aden said.

He noted that, before Christmas, KRUM Radio, a station owned by Womack’s father, actually promoted a toy drive held by Aden’s campaign for children in the Third District. “We suspect this is the action of a rogue individual or group of individuals who are the type of folks that stoop to the lowest common denominator instead of engaging in civil political discourse,” Aden said. “It is unfortunate this has occurred, and we will await the results of the police and federal investigations,” Aden said.

I wish you wouldn’t post so many off-topic articles like that. If people wanted to read other news stories, then they would go seek them out elsewhere. What you are doing is borderline spamming.

You are taking up large chunks of comment space by copying and pasting so much text that has nothing whatsoever to do with other comments or with the HotAir article. It seems that you have been doing this for a while now, and it seems that some people tolerate your actions. But you should know that not everyone likes it. Maybe some people are just too polite to say anything, but what you are doing is rude and inconsiderate. You seem to fancy yourself a deliverer of all kinds of random news, but the HotAir comment section isn’t the place for you to do your news delivery service.

OmahaConservative on January 25, 2012 at 5:39 AM

That’s true, but usually the comments are just responding to each other as the conservation gets derailed from the original topic. That’s understandable.

What I’m saying is that this person is posting random news stories complete with paragraphs of text.

Yes, I get that this person has probably been doing this for a while, but why should he get special treatment? True, now I feel like a horrible person even bringing this up, but then I think… What if I started posting off-topic articles (with nearly full text) in many different threads? I’m sure people wouldn’t like it. They’d probably be calling for my head. What if started only posting pro-Santorum or pro-Perry or whatever articles in threads or discussions which had nothing whatsoever to do with those candidates?

Basically, I just feel like I have as much right to express my opinion as any of you long-timer posters do. I don’t appreciate the spamming, no matter who is doing it. Just because someone has been here for years, it doesn’t make them above the rules. At one point workingartist was doing something similar (although he seemed to keep his spam-like posts confined to threads about Perry and his competitors), posting paragraphs upon paragraphs of text. AslanGirl also did something like that, too, but she had the decency to truncate the pasted text to include only shorter excerpts.

Anyway, I’m not trying to rude. I just wish he would be more considerate and wouldn’t litter the comment section with off-topic spam.

The big question is: given how poorly Obama polls with working class voters, would putting Hillary on the ticket help?

Hillary won working class voters in her primary and Bill is still popular with the blue-collar Democrats.

The President is still saying the same things, & unfortunately, doing the same things that have caused the economy & our foreign policy to worsen.
Yes, he inherited a mess. It was a mess caused by leftist policies. And Obama’s leftist “solutions” are digging us deeper into the mire.
But we ought to campaign against liberalism at least as much as we campaign against Obama, who is still well-liked by most Americans.

No, no, no. This country was not founded on some repugnant Marxist philosophy dictating a fair distribution of wealth from the labors of others. Obama is in all ways a Marxist and he will soon completely destroy this once great Republic.

If he wins again we will no doubt have 20 more years of a depressed economy.

It’s a proxy war between the grassroots and the Establishment.

The Newt landslide in South Carolina showed that the people handily beat the Republican Establishment, the media, and Mitt.
