Quotes of the day

“But until Brian Williams called ‘time,’ it was Mr. Gingrich that seemed knocked back on his heels by the relentless assault from Mr. Romney…

“Today, the mild-mannered Mr. Romney is gone.

“‘You can call it whatever you like. I call it influence peddling,’ Mr. Romney said, looking straight at his chief rival. ‘It is not right. You have a conflict.’

“He continued to criticize Mr. Gingrich: ‘You spent 15 years in Washington, on K street. This is a real problem.’”

RADIATION STORM IN PROGRESS:
****************************

Solar protons accelerated by this morning’s M9-class solar flare are streaming past Earth. On the NOAA scale of radiation storms, this one ranks S3, which means it could, e.g., cause isolated reboots of computers onboard Earth-orbiting satellites and interfere with polar radio communications. An example of satellite effects: The “snow” in this SOHO coronagraph movie is caused by protons hitting the observatory’s onboard camera.

ALMOST-X FLARE AND CME (UPDATED):
*********************************

This morning, Jan. 23rd around 0359 UT, big sunspot 1402 erupted, producing a long-duration M9-class solar flare. The explosion’s M9-ranking puts it on the threshold of being

an X-flare, the most powerful kind. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the flare’s extreme ultraviolet flash:

There is something very unsavory and un-American about the spectacle of Willard, Lord Romney (who’s got a net worth estimated upwards of $500 million) trashing the attempts by Newt Gingrich to make an honest living.

Stop saying that. You are really cagey.

cynccook on January 24, 2012 at 1:24 AM

I’m not at all cagey. You seem to believe that one needs to announce to the whole world every bit about oneself, and I just don’t share that belief. There is absolutely nothing mysterious about me.

Igor R. on January 24, 2012 at 1:26 AM

Beautiful, you and I would get along real well. Nice.

Bmore on January 24, 2012 at 1:22 AM

When I was a little kid I read about Billie Holiday in some old gossip style magazines from the 50′s that were at my Grandmother’s house, but I never heard her sing. Then years later this song was used in a television show and somehow I instantly knew that it had to be her. It’s one of my very favorite songs. I sing it to my little boys at night and they know all the lyrics.

cynccook on January 24, 2012 at 1:27 AM

No, no, canopfor, Dire was referring to “laugh out pretty loud”. Lopl.

canopfor on January 24, 2012 at 1:23 AM

You know what I don’t get canopfor, when I first met Dire someone had said something negative about the smileys. I just don’t get why folks don’t want people to have individuality. I mean its part of you that makes you, you. I dread thinking what it might be like if we were all clones. Talk about boring. I like being creative.

Perfect, I’ve sometimes felt I was born into the wrong time musically that is. I love that genre. Try this. Not great sound but listenable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgwKWT8_Ur8

Care to elaborate why something that’s happening when work is difficult to find for illegal immigrants can’t happen?

Have we moved to the music selections for tonight yet? Deep in my heart I know that that is not grammatically correct but y’all know what I mean.

Cindy Munford on January 24, 2012 at 1:11 AM

At Last, by the great Etta James who passed last week. Her voice, a heart that sung.
