Palin to Christie: Don’t get your panties in a wad over Gingrich’s victory in South Carolina

posted at 7:23 pm on January 23, 2012 by Allahpundit

Obligatory, for many reasons. One: Our resident Palin fans will relish every second. Two: It makes for a sweet undercard to tonight’s main event. Three: It’s part of a longstanding low-grade feud between Christie and Palin that began when he tweaked her on Jimmy Fallon’s show and has continued in fits and starts ever since. If it’s ever going to go from simmering to a full boil, this ought to do it. Four: Palin hitting Christie for playing into the media’s hands perfectly captures the Gingrich/Romney dynamic right now. Despite his own diversions from conservative orthodoxy over the years, Newt has become the de facto “true conservative” in the race partly because he’s running against the Ultimate RINO and partly because he’s good at flaming the bete noires of the base — the media, the GOP establishment, etc. To some extent he’s following the Palin playbook while Romney, as a supposedly electable centrist blue-state governor, is trying to follow Christie’s path to success. Gingrich isn’t as charismatic a populist as Palin, though, and Romney isn’t remotely as charismatic an establishmentarian as Christie. In a way, they’re running a watered-down version of what would have been a much more entertaining (and even nastier) race.

Via Philip Klein, three excerpts from her interview with Eric Bolling that’ll air later this evening on Fox Business. Boldface parts are mine:

On New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie calling Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich an “an embarrassment” to the Republican Party:

“I do care to take him to task — poor Chris. This was a rookie mistake. He played right into the media’s hands. Here’s a host that asked Chris, ‘Does Newt embarrass the party.’ I think he asked him twice, and there Chris played right into it and spewed that about Newt embarrassing the party. Sometimes if your candidate loses in just one step along this path, as was the case when Romney lost to Newt the other night and of course, Romney is Chris Christie’s guy, you kind of get your panties in a wad and you may say things that you regret later. And I think that that’s what Chris Christie did. His response to what the media was asking him was reflective of a lack of self-discipline. I’ve learned my lessons all along the way, too, and not responding, not playing into the media’s hands when they’re trying to get you to say something like is this candidate an embarrassment to your party?”

On if Christie was tricked into calling Gingrich an “embarrassment”:

“I think if Chris were asked about some of his past actions, taking a state helicopter to his kid’s baseball game, some people may say, well, that sort of embarrassed your party, Chris. And he would then be on the receiving end of a comment that maybe he wished that somebody kept as an inside thought and not blasting that to the rest of the nation. He’s been in office a year or two is all, and he’ll learn that the media goad you. They want you to say things like that in order to boost ratings and make it more of a reality show-type scenario that we’re watching in the GOP primary. And a comment like that just kind of played right on into that narrative.”

On how Democrats will use Christie’s comment against Gingrich:

“He just produced an ad for the Democrats. If Newt is the nominee, he just handed them free this negative PR ad that they’re going to incorporate into their negative scenario against somebody who came out there against HillaryCare back in his day, who came out balancing budgets, working with a Democrat governor, who came out cutting taxes and trying to rein in government growth in order to put the country on the right track back then, and has intentions of doing that today.”

True enough about Christie producing attack-ad fodder for Democrats with that line about Newt but we’re waaaaay down that road already on Romney thanks to Gingrich’s attacks on Bain. As for her point about “reality shows” and playing into the media’s hands, I’m curious to see whether Christie will let that lie or if he’ll get snotty with her in his response. You would think that the last thing Romney needs is for one of his top surrogates to start feuding with a grassroots favorite, but since he seems totally incapable of generating any excitement on the stump himself, maybe he’ll unleash Christie as an attack dog to start scoring points on Newt and his surrogates. That’s if Christie’s willing to do it, of course: The more bridges he burns now, the harder things get for him in 2016 or 2020.

Stay tuned. Click the image to watch.

Sarah Palin is terrific. She is beating the establishment. She is the best pundit on tv. Her knowledge of big time politics is impressive. If Sarah Palin can beat Romney without even running it will be very impressive. She is the leader of the oppose Mitt Romney movement in the Republican Party.

Stop being delusional.

Palin just threw away any chance she might of had of a future run by supporting Gingrich.

Sarah Palin is an ‘analyst’ for FOX and as such SHE IS THE MEDIA.

When she attacks “the media” she couldn’t BE more disingenuous.

HotAir, Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, all are parts of “the Media”.

So when you hear Palin or Gingrich attacking “the media” ask yourself: WHO are they talking about SPECIFICALLY?

fight like a girl on January 24, 2012 at 12:23 AM

But there’s something else about her that drives the opposition nuts, that we tend to overlook because we focus too hard on her as an individual. And that something else is Todd.

Todd Palin is one of Alaska’s equivalent to a NASCAR star (two time “Iron Dog” champ).
He’s so undeniably a rugged outdoors man, that nobody can begin to label him “wimp.”
He’s been a hands-on blue collar worker his entire adult life (well, until a couple years ago anyway), and he is undeniably humble as can be. Doesn’t seem to be an arrogant streak in him.
But I triple-dog-dare you to threaten Sarah, their children or grandchildren, or any close friend in his presence.
When it comes to Sarah Palin, the opposition is just as afraid (more so?) of Todd’s character appeal as they are Sarah’s.

listens2glenn on January 23, 2012 at 11:22 PM

That is something that I have said, too. If Todd was to become the First Dude, there won’t be any woman elected president again for generations because of the high standard that he would set. Bill Clinton? OMG! Who else do they have? No one.

1. “Sarah is the cause of Newt winning SC.”
2. But the votes moved from Romney to Newt.
3. Therefore Sarah persuaded large numbers of Mitt voters.
4. Palin is more influential with Mitt supporters than Mitt is.

5. But Mitt supporters are “establishment,” according to Palin.
6. Thus, SC proves “establishment” voters take their cue from Palin not Mitt.
7. Therefore Palin, in effective terms, is the voice of the “establishment.”

Is that the story?

It is getting to the point where I can’t tell the difference between an Obamadrone and Romneybot, they are both superficial and moronic and look down on conservatives. Romneybots have lost their flippin mind. I was right when I said the only thing between Mitt Romney and the nomination is Sarah Palin. She saved Newt Gingrich.

CoolChange80 on January 24, 2012 at 1:53 AM

Palin sounds really foolish.

netster007x on January 24, 2012 at 2:03 AM

Bad press–even as relentlessly, ruthlessly bad as she and her family were subjected to–is not being ‘battered and bruised’. GOP candidates and politicians always get bad press. And as much as I dislike Newt Gingrich, his numbers starting out had to have been at least as low and probably much lower than Palin’s were when she made her decision. Credit where it’s due, Gingrich has guts, he was willing to roll the dice. Same for Romney and Santorum and all the others, even Ron Paul, the candidate from Zeta-Alpha 5.

So now Sarah’s a pundit and–in her way–a would-be kingmaker and a force in the GOP. Good for her, but her decision not to run takes her from the board, in my view. You can’t win if you don’t play.

troyriser_gopftw on January 23, 2012 at 11:56 PM

Oh please. Did the media drag out meat’s daughters and talk trash about them? What about Mittness, other than the dog? If you don’t think she’s been vilified like any other, you haven’t been paying attention.

Come to think of it, what was newt doing to the gop status quo when they ran him out on trumped up charges? Of what, 38 charges only one stuck?

Grant was a drunk, but as Abe said, he can fight and he wasn’t so bad as POTUS.

George Washington had his affairs and Ben Franklin was a notorious playboy. In fact practically all of the POTUSes that we look up to had their flaws, but the question we need to ask is can the person do the job we want done.

Newt wants to be someone, a hero. In that regard, has he really ever failed to “dance with the one that brought him”? Yeah he wanted to talk about mandates and AGW and we beat him down for it. But do you think that deep down inside he still think it best? At the time he did those things, he fancied himself to be the voice in the conservative wilderness, saying “hey, let’s talk about this or that”. But it seems that whenever he gets smacked down, he takes it to heart and recalibrates. That’s the difference with Mittness in that if we don’t see it his way, we’re rubes and he’ll do it with or without us. Both like to get in front of an idea, one sticks to his guns to spite his base, the other does his mean culpable. While newt is far from my first choice, I have no doubt that he would dismantle ObamneyCare, find a fundamentally conservative free market solution via tort reform, portability etc. I have no doubt that he’ll do what he can to reign in activist judges. Most importantly, I think he has a score to settle with many an elite. Simply put, he is the enemy of my enemies, that being the RINOs in Congress and the party establishment. I’d be willing to vote for him so he can tear them apart and leave it to the conservatives to rebuild the party. I would love nothing more than to see boehner, Mitch, Cantor and many others driven from their cozy perches of power and to hear their weeping and lamentations. That should be newts job number one, if he wants my vote. Otherwise, given the current slate, I’m not going to hold my nose when I vote for a conservative alternate, ie write-in Sarah or whoever.

I’m not sure that she saved him, I think a perfect storm happened around Newt. The intent was to continue the primary process and since only three states have spoken, I don’t know how that could be bad.

Newt has become the de facto “true conservative” in the race partly because he’s running against the Ultimate RINO

In no universe do I consider Newt a conservative. He’s every bit as bad as Romeny in his current positions with the exception of gun control, and is every bit the loon on the Global Warming Fiction that ken-Doll is.

Unlike Ken-Doll Newt did at least do some things back in the 1990′s that one could “call” conservative, as opposed to say, being the “Governor” of a liberal hell-hole, appointing a pile of liberal judges, banning guns as fast as possible, spending like a maniac, and putting in place a liberty destroying cash-sucking communist health care scam.

About the only other thing he’s got going is that he’s chewing on the media, and hey, I consider the overwhelming majority of the media to be just a small step removed from pedophiles, so if he wants to scourge them some, I won’t complain.

None of those things mean I will vote for the guy – a clown that loves “F.D.R. and Woodrow Wilson” so fervently. Really? You Idolize the guys responsible for some of the worst abuses of U.S. citizens since Andrew Jackson marched the Indians to oblivion Newt?

Is Newt better than Romney? Yes. But let’s not pretend beating a Syphilitic Camel is setting the bar terribly high. And it’s certainly not going to be enough to make my family vote for him.

Pass.

PS: We won’t vote FOR Hussein Obama, like we would if Ken-Doll is stuffed up our rears like a suppository, simply out of respect for what Newt did in the 1990′s. That aside, his career has been a failure since then, and there is no way we can live with ourselves and give our “consent” through voting to be his serfs.

Heckle & Jeckle 2012?

PPS: Shove the inevitable “wasted vote” tripe up your colon. If that’s your mentality, you should look at the last poll taken the night before the election, and vote for whomever is in the lead. In my opinion, the only way to waist your vote is to sell out your principles utterly, and give your support to some hack infatuated with Global Warming an other Statist garbage.

No man that supports AGW will ever get our votes. Hear that Ken-Doll and Salamander? Newt… get back to lashing media jack-boot wearing brown shirts. It entertains me. But on’t expect me to support you…

How can someone who suggested voting for Newt in SC in order to prolong the primary and the intra-party attacks that will follow raise concern about giving the an attack ad to the left?

netster007x on January 24, 2012 at 2:51 AM

You would think that the last thing Romney needs is for one of his top surrogates to start feuding with a grassroots favorite…

Look, she and her supporters in the grass roots are clowns. Everyone knows it. Only a fool who makes mega bucks on reality tv… peddling her husband’s reality tv show (and failing I might add), would actually use it on an attack on a legit politician.

WHAT A JOKE…WHAT A CLOWN.

HerneTheHunter on January 24, 2012 at 3:01 AM

Ms. Palin,

Please tether any impulses you might have to use crude and condescending references when referring to respected members of the Republican Party. Might I also suggest an effort on your part to utilize eloquent and elevated rhetoric, and so better establish for yourself a certain level of gravitas and respectability.

In closing might I also express my appreciation for your decision not to seek the presidential nomination on this occasion, as it was almost certainly the right thing to do, doubtless avoiding the unpleasant tying up of things in weird knots and that sort of thing. Okay? Thanks!

netster007x on January 24, 2012 at 2:51 AM

I don’t find it a compelling argument either but the same thing was said when Newt went after Bain. I’m sure the Left has stuff planned for the Republican nominee that we haven’t even dreamed of. History has proven that when you own the mouth organ, the tune doesn’t have to be true.

Cindy Munford on January 24, 2012 at 3:04 AM

Hey Sarah Palin, the DNC already has a three minute ad, yes, a three minute ad of Newt and Perry clips hammering the free enterprise system that Romney used to make him wealthy. And you are worried that Christie is giving the democrats a PR ad because he said Newt embarrassed the party as Speaker?

Which ad do you think is more destructive?

scotash on January 24, 2012 at 3:51 AM

How can someone who suggested voting for Newt in SC in order to prolong the primary and the intra-party attacks that will follow raise concern about giving the an attack ad to the left?

Prolonging the primary?

What’s the matter… scared that those us us real conservatives in the inner States might have their say?

PFFFFT.

Screw that idiot mentality. Why should a bunch of Rockefeller RINO’s get to pick the candidates? Let the nation have their voice, stop disenfranchising those of us in the RED STATES who are sick of having establishment hacks shoved down our throats and having all the real conservatives FORCED out by RNC anal-soul-sucking before we ever get a chance to cast a vote.

Also, I take exception to the entire faulty asinine premise that the candidates bringing up solid points about the faults of their competitors weakens them. I would argue that:

A: It inoculates the candidates against these charges WHEN the Commie-left’s attack dog media starts in on them down the road.

B: Prepares the candidates to defend themselves WHEN the Commie-left’s attack dog media starts in on them down the road.

C: Helps us VET our candidates better – and by that I mean the nature of the attacks lobbed help us measure the people we would otherwise support – i.e. Rue Paul and Newt’s Anti-capitalist screeds regarding Commie-lite-Ken-Doll’s Off-shore Money or Bain Capital. Any chance Newt had with me vanished when he did that.

So quit crying that we in Montana might actually have some names on the ballot to pick from Rombots. Roll up your god-d*&^%ed sleeves, and get ready to fight for every state, take your black eyes, your bloody noses, and get ready, BECAUSE THIS AIN’T NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT $1,000,000,000.00 USD and the DemonRats are gonna hurl at you come September.

Grow some damn testicular-fortitude RNC hacks, and quit sobbing in your effete micro-brews that those of us in Coors country get to have a say in things – you’re sounding more and more like Libtards by the god-d*&^ed day.

As a former Sarah Palin supporter, I have to agree with you 100%.

Of course Sarah Palin is a dishonest, self-promoting empty suit (skirt?) who has no business telling anyone else how to run their campaigns. Sarah Palin became a national laughingstock after her first major tv interview, and then she resigned from her position as governor in the middle of her first term.

She endorsed Gingrich, but didn’t have the guts to do it in a direct way. She knows that, when Gingrich loses the nomination to Romney, people will (rightly) point out that her endorsement of Newt didn’t put him over the top in the end. Therefore, she has to issue that non-endorsement endorsement. But, make no mistake, it was clearly an endorsement. Her explanation of that endorsement made about as much sense as her pathetic, convulted excuses for why she cowardly and selfishly QUIT her job as governor.

Palin badmouths Chris Christie because Christie had the guts to refuse to bow down and worship her in the way that many Fox News anchors and others annoyingly feel compelled to do. Palin attacks Christie for rightly pointing out the fact that Gingrich has embarrassed the Republican party when Newt was forced to resign in disgrace, but she says nothing critical about Newt Gingrich taking up the rhetoric of the far left as a way to try to smear Romney.

Palin is no principled conservative. She is out for herself. She is also an imcompetent, disgraced former governor who is paid by Fox News to give analysis that never amounts to anything insightful or intelligent. In all her segments she simply does her little “cutesy” act and takes forever getting to the point she is trying to make, if she even has one. When people pretend like she is sharing these amazing nuggets of wisdom, it feels like they are being patronizing, as one would talk to a child.

Though I used to feel good about her, over time the woman started getting on my nerves. She never seemed to get any better in any of her unscripted comments. She’s just an overhyped, attention-loving celebrity who, in 2008, was put into a situation she wasn’t prepared for. The sad thing about Sarah Palin is that she is, undeservedly, seen by many as a Tea Party “leader” or some kind of spokseperson for conservatism. Ugh, I think we can do better than her.

And I say this as a former Palin supporter. Give me Paul Ryan or Allen West or Bobby Jindal or Marco Rubio any day, and let’s close the chapter and move on from the embarrassment that is Sarah Palin. Actually, it seems that most people already have. It’s just a remaining bunch of hardcore worshipers who seem to put much stock in anything she has to say.

bluegill on January 24, 2012 at 4:29 AM

Sarah Palin must really have ticked off the Romneybots. They are doing a lot of name calling. Sarah is right about Chris Christie. She is more kind than what Mark Levin said of Christie.

Sarah Palin fights the establishment so well. Sarah Palin has a plan and it is clearly working. If Romney loses she wins big. Romney was hoping to score the quick knock out. The machine thought Romney was going to win SC. You had Demint, Morris, and others saying it is all over and then something happened Todd endorsed Newt, Newt regained some footing, Sarah said she would vote Newt in SC to keep it going that stopped Santorum and sent the message for Perry to get out and endorse Newt and behold a narrow lead, then ABC Marianne Gingrich,Palin says Gingrich will soar because of it and does combined with response to John King. Had Sarah Palin endorsed Romney before SC this race would be over and you know it. Now Newt is leading and Romney is jeopardy of losing one of his must win states Florida. I can see why the Romneybots are angry and attack Palin because she stopped your plans.

I absolutely loved her convention speech (the speechwriter deserves major kudos for that achievement!), but it was all downhill from there. It wasn’t until after her embarrassing resignation from her governor job and then her long, self-promotional campaign where she teased her worshipers about a potential president run that I really finally just had it with the woman.

I’m sure she could still have a positive political role (like helping rally certain groups in GOTV efforts?), but acting as a Tea Party “leader” or being any kind of spokesperson for conservatism or Republicans isn’t what she ought to be doing. She’s an embarrassment. Her political “analysis” on tv always stinks, and I have to wonder what the other people at Fox News really think of her. She lowers the quality of the channel when its shows take her “analysis” at all seriously.

Palin voice is like screeching chalk, and has nothing to add to these debates. The dumbest, most unqualified person ever dredged up by the GOP.

Chris Christie is done! Stick a fork in him (and release some of the gas in that gas bag) because, a la Scott Brown, talk about offending and insulting conservatives. Between him and Ann Coulter whining and complaining about Newt Gingrich, it’s like nails on a chalk board. Or are they deliberately sabotaging Romney because if so, let them keep at it? He and Coulter are like Laurel and Hardy together. Sad.
