Obama’s 2011 Gallup job approval rating lowest yet

posted at 3:35 pm on January 21, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

This past year’s presidential job-approval average from Gallup caught me by surprise.  After all, Barack Obama got Osama bin Laden in May, which gave him a few weeks of good job approval ratings, and his 2010 drubbing in the midterm elections would make most presume that he’d reached his nadir. Not hardly:

President Barack Obama averaged 44% job approval for his third full year in office, which ended Jan. 19. His third-year average is down slightly from his second-year average of 47% and much lower than his first-year average of 57%.

Obama’s third-year average is based on approximately 175,000 interviews with U.S. adults conducted between Jan. 20, 2011 — the second anniversary of his inauguration — and Jan. 19, 2012.

Obama’s job approval rating during his third year in office had its ups and downs, peaking at 53% in May and falling as low as 38% in August and October.

Obama actually finished worse than the overall annual average, with just 43% approval in the final quarter.  That included a handful of mid-40s approval ratings at the end of the quarter, so one could argue that Obama has a little momentum coming into a presidential-election year.  However, even those readings don’t beat his 2010 average, when Obama’s party got clobbered in midterm elections.

Actually, Obama should be thanking Jimmy Carter.  Without Carter’s abysmal 37.9% for 1979, Obama would have set the lowest mark in Gallup history for third-year approval ratings.  He now edges out Ronald Reagan, who finished 1983 with a 44.9% rating, but fell well short of Bill Clinton’s 47.5%, which is now third lowest in the series.  Of course, both of those presidents won their re-election bids the following year, but both of those also had economies that had obviously strengthened and job creation well under way, especially Clinton, whose rating had more to do with HillaryCare and budgets.  (The only other person besides Carter to lose his re-election bid in this series was George H. W. Bush, whose third-year rating was an astronomical 69.5, second-best in the series behind Eisenhower’s 72.1%.)

Andrew Malcolm sums it up well, including Gallup’s note that this is one of the poorer annual averages in their 68-year history:

According to Gallup’s analysis:

“Comparing Obama’s third-year numbers with all presidential years in Gallup records, Obama’s 44% average job approval rating is well below average, ranking 53rd of the 68 presidential years measured.”

So far, so bad. …

So, the better Americans have come to know the guy and to watch his record, the less they seem to think of him. Of course, what really matters is what they think of him starting with early voting this October and ending the night of Nov. 6.

We’ll know more about that as this year unwinds, but unless there is a dramatic economic improvement, those numbers aren’t coming up.  If getting Osama bin Laden doesn’t make a difference, then nothing else will.

Yep … don’t forget, Obama raised hundreds of millions in 2008 — much of which was illegal and undisclosed. He probably will hit the $1 billion mark as planned this cycle, all with overt, arrogant, impunity.

When will somebody in political office — anybody, maybe especially a non-political leader:

. Stand up to the tyrant?

. Say “Yes, I’m a racist — because as Viktor Frankl said ‘there are only two races, the decent and the indecent’”;

. Give the country a “mad as hell / we’re not gonna take it anymore” rallying cry?

. And/or announce that “We will practice noncooperation with anything — and that means YOU, Mr. President — that diminishes human dignity”?

When, I ask? [Don't bother, I already know the answer ...]

Millions of people have given up looking for work and this has been a very lame recovery compared to others.

As a detailed analysis of previous post-recession economies from Phil Gramm at the Wall Street Journal points out, if the current economic recovery did as well as the past 10 recoveries (post recession) since World War II, almost 12 million more people would be employed and our GDP would be on the fast track to recovery:
“On average, three years after the four deepest previous recessions started, real GDP was 7.6% higher than the pre-recession level. During the Obama recovery, real GDP is up only 0.1%. Forty months after the start of the 1953, 1957, 1973 and 1981 recessions, total employment was on average 4.7% higher than the pre-recession peaks, while total employment today is still down 4.7%—that’s a total employment gap of 13.9 million jobs.”

Sorry to burst your bubble…head.

If the economy is producing jobs in a positive thread increasing month to month, what’s not to like. Instead you want to argue for the policy that ended up with the worst recession in American history when the economy was losing 750K JOBS A MONTH, the job got as low as 6,300, today its over 12K. Argue facts boys.

You mean like the fact that Obama promised us that if the so-called “Stimulus Bill” weren’t passed, unemployment would rise all the way to 8%?

On that fact alone, Soetoro will be labelled one of the worst presidents in US history, barely above losers like James Buchanan.

Or the fact that when unemployment stood below 6% John Kerry blasted President Bush for presiding over a “jobless recovery”?

What was the unemployment rate when the GOP, i.e. the party of free enterprise and capitalism, last controlled both the White House and House of Representatives in 2006?

And as for your argument that any improvement in unemployment numbers is cause for celebration, one might argue the GOP majority in the House at least slowed Barry’s spending?

Heck, if a drop to 8.5% unemployment is cause for celebration, what happened to your Dear Leader’s claim that he could lower the oceans and “heal the planet”? Given those superpowers, surely creating a few jobs is within his grasp when he is not feeding the multitude with two loaves and three fishes? The quasi-divinity his followers assign him makes hollow your claim that Barry could not deal with the “mess he inherited”.

…but unless there is a dramatic economic improvement, those numbers aren’t coming up.

And based on what we’ve seen over the last 3 years, Barry isn’t going to do anything to improve the economy.

Unless you count canceling Keystone, more Solyndra-type investments, more economic incentives like “Cash for Clunkers”, maybe another $1 BILLION stimulus, or – following the obvious success of Illinois, raising taxes.

GarandFan on January 21, 2012 at 6:51 PM

Argue facts boys.

residentblue on January 21, 2012 at 6:16 PM

MidniteRambler on January 21, 2012 at 6:43 PM

Obama is a politician, and just like all politician, they are prone to over promise its called campaigning. Do you seriously believe all these republican candidates are going to be able to meet half of their rhetoric in achievements?
The only facts that are cogent here are that there is a positive trend in job growth and that things are getting better. Willard wanted GM to be dissolved but today its once again the world largest automaker, alas making profits again. People before things, mittens of bain would have shipped the whole of Michigan to Canada like an orphan child. It would be interesting to see how he would campaign in Michigan and Ohio….

KeninCT on January 21, 2012 at 5:57 PM

Yeah. 20 trillion. I just sounds sooooo good.

WryTrvllr on January 21, 2012 at 7:30 PM

This is funny. You can’t argue with facts so you start name calling. The number of jobs created or people hired is a separate fact.

WryTrvllr on January 21, 2012 at 7:37 PM

If Obama loses and the margin is two or three swing states with big-labor dominated urban areas (e.g. OH, PA, IN, WI), I believe we’ll see some kind of Dem/Lib/Labor/ACORN beast coalescing to challenge the result in however many states Obama would need to win. Dems badly want revenge for Florida 2000 by any means necessary.

As it happens however, the GOP candidate roster of Double A backups seems these days to be giving Obama his re-election on a plate with every msm-moderated debate.

I’m no fan of any of these repub candidates (other than the one who can trounce O’bozo), but maybe that;s why people are rallying around Gingrich.

WryTrvllr on January 21, 2012 at 8:04 PM

I don’t know. Try as I do, the media has sway with the voting public. Critical thinking be damned.

Newt is the only one that can cut to the quick in all this. Yes, warts and all.

Would it make any lesser sense if I was Mark Levin and had a book for sale?

Doubtful. Every day is a persuasion on the merits.

Help us all, Lord, every one.

mickytx on January 21, 2012 at 8:16 PM

One thing is for sure: if Obozo can’t win re-election with the support of the unions, Acorn, the MSM, the Hollywood elites, the dead people, and the Zombie groupies the whole nation gets proof once and for all what an embarrassing loser he really is. I mean, the dude has an upper hand that is astronomical. It’s like the hobbits against Sauron(sp).

When he loses, the next President needs to make him disclose his true birth certificate and his school records for the whole nation to see. Then we can put this stain on the presidency to rest once and for all. Many analytical books will be written on the topic of “How did the American People let this happen, and what can we do in the future to prevent this from happening again?”

The re-building of this great nation will be a monumental task that has to be accomplished over a span of 2-3 presidencies.

God bless us all.

Think back to the last election:

Obama, an utter unknown (meaning, had few to no “numbers”), played (as in, performed) the golden-voiced crooner sweetly standing back with the poetic, figurative flowing cape and top hat and let the shrill, forceful, pants-wearing Hillary barge right on, while the Right self-destructed in conflict and lack of self-worth.

Meanwhile, there remained Obama, golden-voice, flirtatious, that big smile, that deigning or refusing to conflict with others, that suggestive invitation to just go-mellow with him into the purple sheets.

That’s his and Axelrod’s and the DNC’s gameplan and they’re playing it again. Note Obama’s even singing to the crowds about “chains, chain of fools…” Just as he did, again figuratively, with his megaphone to the tribe in Africa to implement Communism there, among other similar flirtatious, go-my-way solicitations he engages in everywhere when it’s vote-gettin’ time.

Gingrich is another McCain. It’s the McCain-Hillary knock-down boffo-drag-out b**ch fest all over again between the fringe who assumes they’re leading while Obama and the DNC laugh all the way to the polls. Obama and others of his awful character will always have the faint of heart, the weak, the gullible, the lustful, the jealous, the vengeful and foolish to vote for him/them. And there will always be similar misguided people on the Right, so-called, who think that bombast means winning (which it does not).

The biggest risk about Gingrich is the harder you hug him, the more he eeks out in unexpected liabilities elsewhere. Rallying around Gingrich is an exercise in squeezing jello.

residentblue on January 21, 2012 at 7:02 PM

Failing to close Gitmo is a campaign “over-promise”; Soetoro had already been elected and immaculated (not a typo) when he promised that borrowing almost a trillion dollars to fund the “Stimulus” would hold unemployment below 8%; it was not “campaigning”. It was an economy-killing lie by one of the worst Presidents ever.

Besides, you lefties love to talk about how the “Lightbringer” “Jedi” Potus, “the One” we “have been waiting for” was going to transcend “red state/blue state” divides and politics as usual. In admitting the whole idea of Obama was, is, and will be.

New unemployment claims, 300k a week (or more), 1.2million a month. 125k new jobs a month but unemployment rate is going down. They are really cooking the books and the media says nothing…

cjt1957 on January 21, 2012 at 10:33 PM

Just think how low the polls would be if more of the egregious parts of obamacare had been already implemented.

AltTuning on January 21, 2012 at 10:58 PM

Alarming that this bozo still gets so much support.

Obama has done nothing right whatsoever.
