Dirty tricks in Iowa involving former Obama 2008 staffer?

posted at 12:20 pm on January 21, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

It’s difficult to know whether to tell this story in straight or reverse chronology, but either way, it raises eyebrows about the tactics that Iowa Democrats will deploy in 2012.  Let’s take this in reverse.  The story starts with an arrest yesterday in Des Moines of Zach Edwards, who works at Link Strategies as its Director of New Media, for identity theft targeting the Iowa Secretary of State, Republican Matt Schulz:

Zachary Edwards was arrested Friday and charged with identity theft.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety issued a news release saying Schultz’s office discovered the scheme on June 24, 2011 and notified authorities.

The criminal complaint says Edwards fraudulently used or attempted to use the identity of Schultz or Schultz’s brother with the intent to obtain a benefit. No other details were given.

Link Strategies is a well-connected consulting firm with a long relationship to Senator Tom Harkin.  In fact, Link Strategies has a testimonial on its website from Harkin, extolling their work and giving LS credit for his success.

So what was going on in June?  For that, we turn to Kevin Hall at The Iowa Republican, who tells the tale of a strange political attack aimed at Iowa’s Secretary of State at about the same time the alleged crime involving Edwards occurred:

Since his surprise victory over incumbent Michael Mauro in November 2010, Secretary of State Schultz has been a target of the Iowa Democratic Party. Interestingly, on June 24, the same day as Zach Edwards alleged crime, Under the Golden Dome, a blog connected to Iowa Democrats, launched a three-part series of articles critical of Matt Schultz. They were based on documents obtained through an open records request from “a tipster.” The blog alleged that a batch of emails from Schultz’s office “raise some serious questions about his ability to remain independent and ensure election integrity”.

Just 15 days earlier, on June 9, the Iowa Democratic Party filed an ethics complaint against Schultz, claiming the Secretary of State of used public resources to campaign against presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman. The Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board dismissed the complaint on July 19.

Interestingly, Link Strategies no longer has a mention of Edwards on its website, but Glenn Reynolds found it in the Wayback Machine, along with Edwards’ bio — which includes his work as a staffer on Obama’s primary and general-election campaigns in 2007-8:

Zach Edwards got started in web-based research while based in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2006 . After a stint as a part-time political blogger and local democratic volunteer, he joined the Obama campaign in early 2007 as an intern organizing North-West Las Vegas. In September 2007, Zach joined the Obama New Media department as co-director of the Nevada New Media team and then moved on to direct New Media operations in five other primary states (New Mexico, Texas, North Carolina, and South Dakota).

During the 2008 General Election, Zach was the Iowa Director of New Media. In this capacity, he worked closely with communications, research and field operations to provide cutting-edge organizing tools and new media-based opposition research; which was emulated in battleground states across the country. After the election, Zach began working at Link Strategies as the Director of New Media, where he provides innovative web-based research tools, video analysis and production, and web-based communication tools to assist our clients.

Maybe if Link Strategies had consulted Edwards after he posted bail, they would have realized that scrubbing the website wouldn’t do them any good.  As for “web-based communication tools,” the allegation seems to be that Edwards used those to conduct a dirty-tricks campaign against a state official while employed at Link Strategies and helping Democrats like Tom Harkin.  That could certainly be considered “innovative web-based research,” but it’s also likely to be considered illegal.  The questions will be (a) whether the state of Iowa can prove the alleged crimes, (b) whether Link Strategies participated in these alleged crimes, (c) what connections Edwards has to Democratic Party leadership — and (d) how many more Zach Edwards we can expect to find in Barack Obama’s campaign this time around.

Update: When I excerpted the arrest story, I inadvertently left off the explanation of who the victim was.  It’s explained later, but I added it to the opening paragraph.

Update II: John Hinderaker wonders who knew what and when:

That Edwards allegedly tried to steal the Secretary of State’s identity in order to frame Schultz for ‘unethical behavior in office’ is no coincidence. Iowa Democrats, as Kevin Hall of the Iowa Republican points out, have mounted a campaign of false accusations against Schultz. . . . So on its face, Edwards’s identity theft appears to be part of a coordinated effort by the Iowa Democratic Party to bring down the Republican Secretary of State so he can be replaced with a Democrat. We hope that Edwards will get the long jail term that he deserves, but the more important question is, from whom was he taking instructions?

I think we may end up finding out, if Edwards really does face a long jail term.  We’ll see.

Since his surprise victory over incumbent Michael Mauro in November 2010, Secretary of State Schultz has been a target of the Iowa Democratic Party.

A small tax-exempt political group with ties to wealthy liberals like billionaire financier George Soros has quietly helped elect 11 reform-minded progressive Democrats as secretaries of state to oversee the election process in battleground states and keep Republican “political operatives from deciding who can vote and how those votes are counted.”

Known as the Secretary of State Project (SOSP), the organization was formed by liberal activists in 2006 to put Democrats in charge of state election offices, where key decisions often are made in close races on which ballots are counted and which are not.

Soros knows, it’s all about who counts the votes.

BREAKING:

Former Obama Staffer Busted for Stealing Iowa Secretary of State’s Identity
Jan 20 2012
**************

Barack Obama’s 2008 Iowa New Media Director was arrested Friday for attempting to use the identities of Secretary of State Matt Schultz, and/or his brother Thomas, with the intent to falsely implicate the Secretary Schultz in illegal or unethical behavior. Zach Edwards, 29, of Des Moines, currently works for Link Strategies, a Democrat-affiliated organization with ties to Iowa Senator Tom Harkin. Edwards is the Director of New Media for Link Strategies.

The Secretary of State’s office discovered the alleged crime and reported it to authorities. Edwards turned himself in to the Iowa DCI agents Friday afternoon. He was charged with identity theft, a misdemeanor, and booked into the Polk County jail. Edwards posted $2,000 bail and was released later on Friday. He faces up to two years in prison.

Zach Edwards’ bio on Link Strategies website says he joined the Obama campaign in early 2007 as an intern in Nevada. He eventually joined the New Media department and directed their operations in five other primary states. He was the Iowa Director of New Media for Barack Obama’s general election campaign. After the election, Edwards joined Link Strategies, “where he provides innovative web-based research tools, video analysis and production, and web-based communication tools to assist our clients,” according to the bio.

Obama and the Chitown Mafia are well versed in stealing elections and using dirty tricks. The 2012 election will be the most corrupt and dirty in history with the dems. even committing murder if necessary. Count on it. If they have to murder a black person or burn some black churches and blame it on whites, especially tparty whites, to cause riots and get the base fired up and scare off whites from voting, they are not beyond it.

Extreme? Nothing is too extreme for Marxists and Communists who see themselves on the verge of taking over the USA. They know they are closer than ever and will not let this opportunity slip through their fingers. Four more years of Obama will make the fundamental transformation complete.

Only current way to stop it is voter ID laws. That’s why GOP legislatures have been passing them, and Holder has been challenging them.

Unfortunately for Holder, SCOTUS has already ok’d Georgia’s voter ID law, and Georgia is one of the states that gets extra scrutiny under the Voting Rights Act for being a former raaaacist state. SCOTUS ok’d Georgia’s, so other states just need to copy that.

I’m not sure how you define “nothing” nor how many other Hot Air posts you’ve reviewed (sorry Jazz), but identity theft of a sitting SOS who has already been targeted by the Demo Party of Iowa is at least something. It is something of a disgrace that you can’t see the underhanded, foul odors emanating from the White House’s tentacles.

This is not complicated. Obama’s main new media guy in the midwest attempted to smear by illegal means.

What, is the Demo Party so corrupt that this much illegality doesn’t rank?

He is still apparently active in IA Dem politics, working for a consulting group with close ties to Dems, including Sen. Harkin.

And the identity he tried to steal was that of the IA Secretary of State, who oversees elections. With that identity, he could have set up a fake email account, and started sending emails to make it look like the SoS was corrupt.

The Dems had already been making noises about “evidence” coming out on how the SoS was corrupt. See any coordination here? The Dems in IA want a Dem “counting” the votes, so they had to take out the GOP SoS.

“What does his identity theft have to do with how he ran the 2008 campaign?”

Oh, I don’t know. Probably about as much as the corrupt, racial bigot and jackass we have for Attorney General selling guns to Mexican drug cartels so they can kill Americans.

This happened AFTER the campaign and Holder was involved in the 2008 campaign.

But liberals are sooooooo pure and holy, ain’t they?

Mangez-moi.

Does this punk realize that the Chicago Way operates on a policy of omerta, a pledge of silence and loyalty, that he is supposed to take one for the team, claim he acted on his own, and go through life with a criminal record while those who directed him get off scot-free?

The article doesn’t state that Zach Edwards had any criminal history.

Zach Edwards got started in web-based research while based in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2006

The Iowa Department of Public Safety issued a news release saying Schultz’s office discovered the scheme on June 24, 2011 and notified authorities.

It seems to me that if this is true, the charge of “identity theft” what are the odds it’s a one time occurrence, first and only time in 5 years?

Look at the pic with the thread from last night entitled “Santorum On Marianne Gingrich Accusations” posted at 7:10 PM, January 20.

Look at Santorum’s hair, then at Gingrich’s.

Notice how on the right side there is a shadow below his hairline. Is due to the gap between his skin and his dome-rug. Looks as though he is wearing a white, furry helmet.

Gawd! Here am going on and on about Newt’s rug. Gotta get a life or start drinking.

Just a bunch of corn pickers people, nothing to see here….why is the democrat party coordinating on behalf of Jon Huntsman a republican candidate for President?

What One Learns From Obituaries

Gotta view this ALL the way to the bottom and wonder why anyone would want to work in our great country?

It seems that every couple of days New Orleans loses one of its treasured ENTREPRENEURS.

Let’s get the players straight before we go on with this interpretation of data not verified but…

LARMONDO “FLAIR” ALLEN
His Companion: Kawanner Armstrong
His Sons: Christian Allen, Kwan Allen, Larmondo Allen, Jr.
His Daughters: Deidra Allen, Larmenshell Allen, Lamonshea Allen, Larmomdriel Allen, Larmerja Allen, Korevell Allen

AT AGE 25 – He had 9 Children. (Could Kawanner Armstrong Possibly Be The Mother Of All Of
His Kids?)

His Father: Burnell Thompson
His Mother: Esther Allen
His Stepfather: Bruce Gordy

His Brothers: Burnell Thompson, Edgar Thompson, Wil Willis, Danta Edwards, Reshe Edwards, Mattnell Allen, Burnell Allen, Lester Allen

His Sisters: Shannail Craig, Lekiksha Thompson, Gwendolyn Carter, Jessica Willis, Katina Gordy

Grandparents: Delors Allen, J.C. Allen, Anna Laura Thompson, Will Thompson

So, let’s see now….

His Father, Burnell Thompson, fathered his brothers Burnell, Edgar, and his sister Lekiksha.
His Stepfather, Bruce Gordy, fathered his Sister Katina.
His Mother, Esther Allen, must have been unwed when she gave birth to: Larmondo, Mattnell,
Burnell and Lester.
We don’t know who fathered Wil Willis and Jessica Willis, or Dante and Reshe Edwards.
Let’s hope sisters Shannail Craig and Gwendolyn Carter are married.

GOT THE ABOVE ALL STRAIGHT?
********************
NOW, THE REST OF THE STORY

He was 25 and had 3 sons and 6 daughters.
NINE welfare recipients collecting $950 each….. That equals $8,550 a month!!! Now add Food Stamps, Free medical, Free school lunches, and on and on.

Do the math… $102,000+ /year.

Anyone out there, sittin’ on their butt while reading this e-mail, making A HUNDRED GRAND doing nothing?

Now that, to me, is a real Entrepreneur.
(ALSO, BECAUSE OF THEIR FATHERS DEATH, ALL OF THE KIDS WILL COLLECT SOCIAL SECURITY UNTIL THEY ARE 18)
EVEN BETTER…IF “FLAIR’S” THIRTEEN BROTHERS & SISTERS FOLLOWED HIS ENTREPRENEURIAL STRATEGY–THAT’S AN ADDITIONAL $1.3 MILLION PER YEAR
BUT WAIT…THERE’S MORE!
IF ALL THIRTEEN BROTHERS AND SISTERS CAN DUPLICATE HIS FEAT OF 9 WELFARE STRATEGISTS THAT BREEDS 117 NEW RECIPIENTS COLLECTING $100,000/YR!!…OR AN
ADDITIONAL $11,700,000PER YEAR… & THAT’S ONE DAMN FAMILY
(And demands 100% of the taxes paid by 1,000 avg. taxpayers)

And THAT is why this once great country is BANKRUPT!!

scboy on January 21, 2012 at 2:07 PM

Hmmmm…. Makes me wonder if this is what is going on in Wisconsin as the Dems go after Gov. Walker. They keep throwing up charges against any aides or staff that have worked for him now or in the past. I could definitely see them try something like this.

Pretty ballsy to run an ID theft on a sitting SoS.

rockmom on January 21, 2012 at 2:23 PM

Damn sure is. There’s got to be a strategy developed that our side can implement nationwide for the grass roots to implement, that would uncover, expose and hopefully prevent the theft of the 2012 elections. I live in Las Vegas, and we all know the SEIU thugs did it here in 2010, but nobody seemed able to stop it beforehand.

What does his identity theft have to do with how he ran the 2008 campaign? It looks like this happened after he was working for the campaign. Is Ed claiming that no one who ever worked for a GOP campaign ever got arrested after the election was over? Much ado about nothing.

libfreeordie on January 21, 2012 at 1:34 PM

Well, first of all, Ed doesn’t mention that this dude worked in the 2008 O’bama campaign until something like paragraph 5, so your Panic is evident.

I’m sure had the parties been reversed and this dude was a Republican trying to take out a Democrat Secretary of State you would also say “much ado about nothing”.

/

From what I’ve read so far about this case (and that is hard to do, because the Democrat National News Media has totally blacked out the story save for a single al-AP cut and paste) is that

1. The Democrats’ Sugar Daddy, Halliburton part-owner George Soros, has been financing a campaign solely designed to install Democrats in as many Secretary of State offices as possible. This of course goes all the way back to what happened in the 2000 Presidential Election, when the Republican Secretary of State of Florida “stole”
that State’s election for Chimpy Bush. The Democrats vowed that would never happen again, and didn’t care how they accomplished that feat.

2. The Democrats have had their long knives out for Schultz, after all he was not supposed to win that race in 2010. He was supposed to lose that election, but scored an upset. He was the first Republican SOS in Iowa in many years. And as John said this morning over at Power Line:

3. Schultz specifically campaigned on the issue of Democrat Voter Fraud. As his campaign website said at the time:

The Secretary of State plays an important role as the chief election officer for the State of Iowa. This means not only does he supervise Iowa’s 99 County Auditors in administering Iowa’s election laws but is able to be an advocate for accountability and fair elections. Ronald Reagan always said “Trust but Verify.” As Secretary of State I will work to implement the following 3 point plan to make voting easy and cheating almost impossible.

1. PHOTO IDENTIFICATION

We are required to show a Photo ID when we travel on an airplane, cash a check, and when we check into a hotel room. We are required to have a driver’s license when we drive and we should be required to show a Photo ID when we vote. When I am Secretary of State I will work with the legislature to require that every voter show an Iowa Driver’s License or Free State Issued Voter ID when they vote at the polls.

2. REFORM SAME-DAY VOTER REGISTRATION

During the last four years we have seen some major changes to our election laws. The Legislature passed, the Governor signed into law, and the current Secretary of State supported Same-Day Voter Registration, which has created the potential for voter irregularities and fraud. As Secretary of State I will fight to reform Same-Day Voter Registration and require all ballots cast by voters registering on Election Day to be cast as Provisional Ballots. Requiring these ballots to be cast as Provisional Ballots will ensure that anyone attempting to cheat the system by fraudulently registering on Election Day will not be able to change the outcome of the vote.

3. CRIME STOPPERS HOTLINE FOR VOTER FRAUD

As Secretary of State I will establish a crime stoppers hotline for voter fraud to allow citizens to report suspicious activities or actual voter fraud and offer a cash reward for any tip that leads to an arrest and conviction of anyone committing Voter Fraud in Iowa. I will place this on the Secretary of State website and help County Auditors link to this from their websites and actively promote it.

All 3 of those things have been enemies of the Democrat Party for decades. Especially #1.

Del Dolemonte on January 21, 2012 at 2:40 PM

A few questions:

1) Is this Mr. Edwards first attempt at identity theft or other dirty tricks? I’d suggest the RNC and local Pubs focus on Mr. Edwards’ activities very carefully from 2006 forward.

2) Have there been other Pub officials who have been ‘treated’ with scurrilous accusations based on phony emails, etc?

3) Mr. Edwards leaves a spider trial of connections — people he’s worked with and for. We know a couple names. Who are the rest, and how are they connected?

If I ran the RNC, I’d establish an office dedicated to rooting out these sorts of actions, making them public, and thus defending Pub office holders. If the Dems are going to practice the Chicago way and the Soros way then the Pubs have to protect themselves. The Pubs, being the Stupid Party, likely won’t do this.

Ever been to Iowa? I have. They have almost as many acres planted in soybeans as they do corn.

But I’m sure you would never use the “soybean pickers” insult, after all, soybeans are a Staple Food of the Democrat Left.
