VA Governor endorses Romney

Newt Gingrich claimed the South as his native land in Monday’s debate, but so far it’s a Northeasterner who’s racking up the endorsements of southern governors. Today, Virginia’s Bob McDonnell joined South Carolina’s Nikki Haley as endorsers of Mitt Romney. McDonnell will also join Romney and Haley on the campaign trail:
Gov. Bob McDonnell this morning endorsed Mitt Romney’s bid for the Republican presidential nomination, calling him a “results-oriented conservative” who can appeal to Democrats and independents.
McDonnell, making his choice known on the eve of the hotly contested South Carolina primary, said on CNBC’s Squawkbox that he will tell voters there that Romney has the best chance to beat President Barack Obama in November.
“My message will be if you want to win the race in November, vote for Mitt Romney,” McDonnell said. “He can win Democrats and independents to our cause.”
McDonnell is in New York City this morning for a state-related economic development meeting, but will fly to South Carolina this afternoon to join Romney, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and others at a rally in Charleston. He will travel to Greenville with Romney for a campaign event tonight and stay for a Saturday morning event before returning to Richmond.
The Times-Dispatch considers this an inevitable choice by McDonnell. With Perry out of the race, Romney is the last governor standing, and since McDonnell helms the Republican Governors Association at the moment, gubernatorial experience weighs heavily on his choices. McDonnell has said as much publicly, advising voters to look for a candidate with state-level executive experience, and Perry’s exit leaves McDonnell only one opportunity to take his own advice.
Not that Romney will mind much that it took a default to get McDonnell’s endorsement. With Gingrich gaining on him, Romney needs all of the high-profile endorsements he can gather, especially in the South. McDonnell had been popular among conservatives when running for office in 2009, along with Chris Christie in the unusual off-year cycle. McDonnell has a quieter approach than Christie but has governed more conservatively. He has used his veto to sharply restrict state funding for abortions, and his proposal to end the state’s monopoly on liquor stores has more libertarian-minded conservatives cheering as well.
How much will this help in South Carolina? It comes a little late in the primary schedule for it to have a lot of impact, but McDonnell may have more impact in Florida. I’d expect to see a lot of him next week as Romney tries to get his campaign either back on track or heading for the home stretch with a big win in the Sunshine State. McDonnell might also be a consideration for Romney as a running mate in the general election, if Romney manages to win the nomination, as a man who could help attract conservatives without overshadowing the top of the ticket.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking that Sanford’s campaign was something spectacular or easy to emulate. By contrast, it was amateurish (cardboard Pelosi) to an absurd degree. Had he been in a swing district, Stephen Colbert would be doing cartwheels right about now.
This is not something we can be proud of. At all.

Colbert Busch was a perfect example of the no values party.
What Sanford did was terrible, but honestly I’m tired of us whining about the PR value he brings to Dems. Sanford may have cheated on his wife (and there was that trespassing thing), and that’s bad, but instead if lamenting we should just blast the Dems. “You supported a guy who tweeted his junk out to under-age girls. You defend murderers like Gosnell as a matter of political expediency. You have absolutely no grounds to mock the morals relative to politics of anyone else.”

You run the race you need to run to win. In a swing district, you run one way. In an R+11 district, a cardboard cutout might be (and by all appearances, was in this instance) the right thing to do.
Damn right I’m proud. This candidate took a race that we all knew was eminently losable, and turned it into a laugher. Where I come from, we look to that man to learn some political lessons…

So its worth pointing out that with Sanford winning there is absolutely zero reason for the GOP to work with Obama and Democrats in any form.
If a disgraced Sanford can win in a district that was carried by Romney, and if all but 5 House GOP members are from districts that Romney carried, why work with Obama at all?
Even though he was outspent and disgraced, he still won. There are to many signs saying that GOP House members are very very safe going into next year.
I wonder if any of the experts in the media will draw the same conclusion that I did. Because it looks pretty obvious to me.

Not true. This is a deep red district in a special election where turnout is low; the electorate today will mainly be the heavily engaged, politically active people who know who Pelosi, Reid, etc. are. In a general election where the low-information voters show up if you start talking about Pelosi you’re going to have a larger part of the electorate saying “Who?”

What this means is very simple: voters have recognized that Obama and Obama supporters are worse than liars and cheats, which is exactly what Sanford is.
Meanwhile, idiots like yourself were screaming that we needed to push McLame and Romney because otherwise the Obama Party would savage actual conservatives, and Obama and his ilk would NEVER dare to do such things to such nice moderates as McLame and Romney.
What we have figured out is that the Obama Party would lie and smear and accuse Mother Theresa of murder.
So there’s no point in caring what they’re going to say or do; we already know, and there’s nothing we can do to change it.

Yet, you can’t seem to accept that argument when you perceive that the GOPer is somewhat less conservative – say, eighty to eighty-five percent. Strategy isn’t part of your mind then.
Let me ask you this? If Mark Sanford supported enhanced background checks, would then his adultery and free spending be an issue? How about Internet sales taxes? What if he – horrors – believed abortion was acceptable in the case of rape?

Just curious, prior to being overwhelmed by Argentenian poonani, Sanford was respected and did fine on the shows I saw him on.
He turned out to be a big disappointment as I had high hopes for him.

I’ve said that it would be better in the long run to lose today in a race that won’t affect anything then nominate anyone but Mark Sanford in 2014 when the GOP should be heavily favored to retake the seat, both because of its heavy Republican tilt, and the fact that the sixth-year midterm is death for the president’s party. Sanford’s awesome. I am so glad he’ll be back in the House. One more vote against the corporatist welfare-warfare-police statists.
It’s also good that the NRCC abandoned him. He owes the neo-Trotskyite establishment nothing.

Seriously, I get it. Sanford is scum and I agree. But what does that say about the worth of ECB? This was supposed to be a nail-biter close election where we wouldn’t know the winner until late. IT TOOK 90 MINUTES AFTER THE POLLS CLOSED!
The Dems invested a million in this election because they hoped to suggest that there was a massive shift in bedrock Republican districts. Instead, Sanford wins by a decisive margin and they look foolish.

Support for some candidates is indelible, yes.
Witchcraft, anti-masturbation, liar, embezzler, paranoiac. If you asked the Democrats to invent a perfect Republican punching bag, they’d still fall short of her. There’s no excuse for supporting her. None.
And linking me with Romney is fine, insofar as (1) I supported Pawlenty, Cain, and Perry before that, all of whom destroyed themselves, (2) there’s no way on God’s green earth that Gingrich or Santorum would have outperformed him, and (3) Romney never had to run ads denying his involvement in witchcraft.
I picked the best of a terrible field. I’d still pick him again in the same circumstances.

I’m talking about reaching two different people there. My original comment was in response to the suggestion than Sanford’s campaign is a model for Republicans to emulate and that’s not true because of the unique circumstances of the race; it doesn’t work to run against Pelosi when a large chunk of the electorate won’t know who she is. The latter comment was about Democrats reaching their donors who are usually more politically active and engaged and more likely to know who Mark Sanford is. Think of the NAGs, for example. I’m happy to clear up the confusion. :-)

He’s okay on the important stuff, when he talks feelings I get a bit queasy but than that would happen no matter who it was. He’ll be fine and if not, the next guy is just two years away.

But this guy won! I just think it’s funny that everyone in S.C. is stupid although they are they are the very folks who know him well. So he’s a bit of a moon calf over the new chick, I doubt it is going to come up on the floor of the House. Everybody relax.
