VA Governor endorses Romney

posted at 9:15 am on January 20, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Newt Gingrich claimed the South as his native land in Monday’s debate, but so far it’s a Northeasterner who’s racking up the endorsements of southern governors.  Today, Virginia’s Bob McDonnell joined South Carolina’s Nikki Haley as endorsers of Mitt Romney.  McDonnell will also join Romney and Haley on the campaign trail:

Gov. Bob McDonnell this morning endorsed Mitt Romney’s bid for the Republican presidential nomination, calling him a “results-oriented conservative” who can appeal to Democrats and independents.

McDonnell, making his choice known on the eve of the hotly contested South Carolina primary, said on CNBC’s Squawkbox that he will tell voters there that Romney has the best chance to beat President Barack Obama in November.

“My message will be if you want to win the race in November, vote for Mitt Romney,” McDonnell said. “He can win Democrats and independents to our cause.”

McDonnell is in New York City this morning for a state-related economic development meeting, but will fly to South Carolina this afternoon to join Romney, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and others at a rally in Charleston. He will travel to Greenville with Romney for a campaign event tonight and stay for a Saturday morning event before returning to Richmond.

The Times-Dispatch considers this an inevitable choice by McDonnell.  With Perry out of the race, Romney is the last governor standing, and since McDonnell helms the Republican Governors Association at the moment, gubernatorial experience weighs heavily on his choices.  McDonnell has said as much publicly, advising voters to look for a candidate with state-level executive experience, and Perry’s exit leaves McDonnell only one opportunity to take his own advice.

Not that Romney will mind much that it took a default to get McDonnell’s endorsement.  With Gingrich gaining on him, Romney needs all of the high-profile endorsements he can gather, especially in the South.  McDonnell had been popular among conservatives when running for office in 2009, along with Chris Christie in the unusual off-year cycle.  McDonnell has a quieter approach than Christie but has governed more conservatively.  He has used his veto to sharply restrict state funding for abortions, and his proposal to end the state’s monopoly on liquor stores has more libertarian-minded conservatives cheering as well.

How much will this help in South Carolina?  It comes a little late in the primary schedule for it to have a lot of impact, but McDonnell may have more impact in Florida.  I’d expect to see a lot of him next week as Romney tries to get his campaign either back on track or heading for the home stretch with a big win in the Sunshine State. McDonnell might also be a consideration for Romney as a running mate in the general election, if Romney manages to win the nomination, as a man who could help attract conservatives without overshadowing the top of the ticket.

So has Sanford shown the GOP the pathway to victory for 2014? No, I don’t mean running off with an Argentinean mistress. Tying every Democrat to Obama and Pelosi.

Doughboy on May 7, 2013 at 8:51 PM

Or running in an R+11 district. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking that Sanford’s campaign was something spectacular or easy to emulate. By contrast, it was amateurish (cardboard Pelosi) to an absurd degree. Had he been in a swing district, Stephen Colbert would be doing cartwheels right about now.

This is not something we can be proud of. At all.

One Congressional race isn’t worth really getting upset over, but this is the symptom of something bigger that does get to me. What does trouble me is the large number of low-level thinkers in the party who have never had a strategic thought in their lives. Now let’s see how many times the Dems can get Sanford on the Sunday morning shows to make him out to be the face of the GOP.

Sanford is a terrible example of the family values party.

Colbert Busch was a perfect example of the no values party.

What Sanford did was terrible, but honestly I’m tired of us whining about the PR value he brings to Dems. Sanford may have cheated on his wife (and there was that trespassing thing), and that’s bad, but instead if lamenting we should just blast the Dems. “You supported a guy who tweeted his junk out to under-age girls. You defend murderers like Gosnell as a matter of political expediency. You have absolutely no grounds to mock the morals relative to politics of anyone else.”

Nonsense on stilts.

You run the race you need to run to win. In a swing district, you run one way. In an R+11 district, a cardboard cutout might be (and by all appearances, was in this instance) the right thing to do.

Damn right I’m proud. This candidate took a race that we all knew was eminently losable, and turned it into a laugher. Where I come from, we look to that man to learn some political lessons…

JohnGalt23 on May 7, 2013 at 9:01 PM

So its worth pointing out that with Sanford winning there is absolutely zero reason for the GOP to work with Obama and Democrats in any form.

If a disgraced Sanford can win in a district that was carried by Romney, and if all but 5 House GOP members are from districts that Romney carried, why work with Obama at all?

Even though he was outspent and disgraced, he still won. There are to many signs saying that GOP House members are very very safe going into next year.

I wonder if any of the experts in the media will draw the same conclusion that I did. Because it looks pretty obvious to me.

Raquel Pinkbullet on May 7, 2013 at 9:05 PM

Not true. This is a deep red district in a special election where turnout is low; the electorate today will mainly be the heavily engaged, politically active people who know who Pelosi, Reid, etc. are. In a general election where the low-information voters show up if you start talking about Pelosi you’re going to have a larger part of the electorate saying “Who?”

Pity neither Pelosi or Obama are mythical.

What this means is very simple: voters have recognized that Obama and Obama supporters are worse than liars and cheats, which is exactly what Sanford is.

Meanwhile, idiots like yourself were screaming that we needed to push McLame and Romney because otherwise the Obama Party would savage actual conservatives, and Obama and his ilk would NEVER dare to do such things to such nice moderates as McLame and Romney.

What we have figured out is that the Obama Party would lie and smear and accuse Mother Theresa of murder.

So there’s no point in caring what they’re going to say or do; we already know, and there’s nothing we can do to change it.

So let’s win instead.

Ah, right. I’m a RINO and I supported Busch. You caught me.

You astound me sometimes, you know that? You were just saying on this very thread that it was supremely important to support the adulterous spendthrift Sanford because he’d be 100% conservative (that’s a joke if I ever heard one, but let’s assume you’re right) while Colbert Busch would be a liberal drone.

Yet, you can’t seem to accept that argument when you perceive that the GOPer is somewhat less conservative – say, eighty to eighty-five percent. Strategy isn’t part of your mind then.

Let me ask you this? If Mark Sanford supported enhanced background checks, would then his adultery and free spending be an issue? How about Internet sales taxes? What if he – horrors – believed abortion was acceptable in the case of rape?

lol — ah, gad.

“This was a whole lot more than a simple affair, this was a love story,” Sanford said. “A forbidden one, a tragic one, but a love story at the end of the day.”

They met for romantic stays in Manhattan and in the Hamptons, paying cash so their whereabouts could not be traced. They met one more time in the city, a rendezvous meant as their last, sanctioned by his wife, Jenny, after she learned of their affair and chaperoned by a spiritual adviser who came to help them say goodbye.

But the governor could not stay away. Four months later, telling his staff he was going hiking on the Appalachian Trail over Father’s Day, he got on a plane to Argentina, hungry for more time with Chapur, and discovered why he could not close the door. “I will be able to die knowing that I had met my soul mate,” he said.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2009/07/sanford-like-any-man-in-love-gushes-about-his-soul-mate-confesses-to-other-lusts-.html

I will say this, I read an Economist piece and he sounds like a politician at ease:

I caught up with him in Bluffton, where he was due to make a stop at Year Round Pools. A group of 13 Colbert-Busch supporters (all women, mainly retirees from the Sun City complex up the road) had massed, waving signs and cheering, on the public ground that flanked the pool shop’s driveway. They were the only sign of an impending appearance from Mr Sanford. When he arrived, he went straight up to them, his smile pressed and ironed, and started shaking hands. “I think this is what makes America great,” he said, “and I admire you exercising your constitutional rights.” One of the protestors asked him to consider casting his vote for Ms Colbert-Busch; he promised to consider it. Before long he had the protestors smiling, laughing and joking with him. He walked into Year Round Pools, trailing a half-dozen journalists, a couple of staffers and seven supporters; inside he found just the store’s owner, who said he had “no idea you were coming”, and an employee. He pressed the flesh all the same. He gives the impression of finding it utterly incomprehensible that anyone, anywhere for any reason could dislike him. He is compulsively charming.

I don’t think I’ve ever suggested we place nice and be reasonable.

Oh no. You’ve only posted what, fifty times on this post demanding that Republicans shut up and nominate and vote for who the Obama Party tells us?

I’ve suggested we not nominate idiots but that’s a wholly different thing. Stop trying to hold me accountable for the words you’ve put in my mouth.

alchemist19 on May 7, 2013 at 9:20 PM

Guess what? They did, and he still won anyway.

And for you to grouse about “idiots” when you were ready to put a Pelosi meat puppet with less brains than a lobotomized cockroach and a string in her back that, when you pull, makes her scream “Obama uber alles!” into office makes it pretty clear where your loyalties lie.

northdallasthirty on May 7, 2013 at 9:25 PM

Too bad liberals, didn’t sign up enough dead people, dogs, and fictitious people to vote for Busch candidate to win

Raquel Pinkbullet on May 7, 2013 at 9:25 PM

All you chicken-little conservatives who said Colbert-Bush would win are proven wrong. You win the Dick Morris award for poor prognostication. I hold you in contempt.

All you hyperventilators who say Sanford will be a poster boy for the “war on women” are living in November, 2012 – that was just pablum to beat Romney. Grow up. We will never beat the Dems if we accept that they frame the arguments. Free your minds.

All you jerks who bashed Sanford for ‘traspassing’ so he could be with his sons are unworthy of having your voices heard. Jenny was a ruthless witch to do what she did – talk about hell hath no fury. But for those of you who think that this somehow meant something are morons. Yes. Morons. That means you.

Sanford was tea party before there was a tea party. Are you mad that he cheated on his wife? Or just mad that he embarrassed himself and you are so hyper-partisan that you can’t forgive anyone who hurts the brand? I’n betting most of you anti-Sanford types are the latter not the former.

As for Colbert-Bush – she was revealed as a transparent Pelosi-bot. All that Donk money wasted in a heavy Red district. I love it. We can all at least agree on that.

Finally – for those of you bashing spray-painted signs, they are genius. You can’t take your eyes off them. Anyone who thinks that this tactic is amateurish is, in fact, an amateur himself/herself.

Exactly, RINOs like alchemist and KingGold keep assuring us that we have to play “nice” and be reasonable because then maybe the leftists will be civil.

Just because the Democrats elect the dregs of society to higher office doesn’t give the GOP free rein to do so. Either conservatives practice what we preach, or we’re just a bunch of lofty hypocrites deriding others from the Mount.

If standard operating procedure in your mind is that personal qualities mean jack crap when it comes to candidate selection, then quite frankly a sap like you deserves to be betrayed at every turn.

You got to love the spin by Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman, Steve Israel:

“In this deep red Republican district that Mitt Romney won by 18 points, the fact that the Democrat made this competitive is a testament to the strength of Elizabeth Colbert Busch as a candidate and the Republican habit of nominating flawed candidates,” Israel said. “Democrats will be aggressive and drive deep into Republican-held territory this cycle to find districts with flawed Republican candidates where we can compete. “Democrats will be aggressive and drive deep into Republican-held territory this cycle to find districts with flawed Republican candidates where we can compete.”

Congrats Rep. Sanford. I serenade your victory with lyrics by Paul Simon:

A man walks down the street
He says why am I soft in the middle now
Why am I soft in the middle
The rest of my life is so hard

I need a photo-opportunity
I want a shot at redemption
Don’t want to end up a cartoon
In a cartoon graveyard

A man walks down the street
He says why am I short of attention
Got a short little span of attention
And woe my nights are so long

Where’s my wife and family
What if I die here
Who’ll be my role-model
Now that my role-model is
Gone Gone

He ducked back down the alley
With some roly-poly little bat-faced girl
All along along
There were incidents and accidents
There were hints and allegations…

I’ve said that it would be better in the long run to lose today in a race that won’t affect anything then nominate anyone but Mark Sanford in 2014 when the GOP should be heavily favored to retake the seat, both because of its heavy Republican tilt, and the fact that the sixth-year midterm is death for the president’s party. I know you’re not so stupid as to not be able to tell the difference between that line of reasoning and “that Republicans shut up and nominate and vote for who the Obama Party tells us” so why are you pretending that you are?

Cindy Munford on May 7, 2013 at 9:32 PM

Yup, yup, yup. Democrats will play whatever card they can and even go so far as to create new cards out of lies: e.g. the Mitt Romney killed my wife smear.

Democrats focus on one thing and that one thing is to win. Get as many of your members in power and push through your agenda. We have to win too.

Raquel Pinkbullet on May 7, 2013 at 9:18 PM

I think most RINOs are just supplicating beta males who want acceptance from their Democrat friends and colleagues. The rest of us want to win and grind the American Left into the ground.

Lesson from 2008: War hero who had more stones facing the Vietnamese than he did fat, balding Senate aristocrats foolishly ruining the country so that they could expire while in office lose national elections. See also: Bob Dole.

Lesson from 2012: Awkward, nice guy New England patricians who marinated in the loony bin that is today’s Ivy League lose national elections. See also: George H.W. Bush

This isn’t very hard to understand. You run a charismatic, savvy, conservative guy or gal with middle class roots and win, win, win.

Punchenko on May 7, 2013 at 9:32 PM

Rather the seat go to a conservative but hopeless philanderer than a shrieking lib feminazi any day of the week. Thank goodness the great people of the Palmetto State didn’t elect the latter.

Often, life gives you choices between the bad and the worse, and I’ll go bad any day of the week over the other alternative.

In a general election where the low-information voters show up if you start talking about Pelosi you’re going to have a larger part of the electorate saying “Who?”

alchemist19

They can fundraise off Sanford being in Congress.

So, Republicans can’t run against Pelosi in their campaigns because voters don’t know her, but dems can fund raise off of Sanford in their campaigns despite even fewer voters knowing about him, lol. Keep flinging, something might stick eventually.

Stop worrying about what people say about Republicans. The Right and/or the Tea Party has been blamed for every crazy violent event since Obama took office and while no once has it been true, it happens every time. Send the people to D.C. that will make the correct votes and more importantly, get rid of those who don’t.

Guess not. :)

Still be glad when we get past this embarrassment, though. Its just hard to take him as a serious person. Too many unserious people telling me too much about how to live at the moment.

Seriously, I get it. Sanford is scum and I agree. But what does that say about the worth of ECB? This was supposed to be a nail-biter close election where we wouldn’t know the winner until late. IT TOOK 90 MINUTES AFTER THE POLLS CLOSED!

The Dems invested a million in this election because they hoped to suggest that there was a massive shift in bedrock Republican districts. Instead, Sanford wins by a decisive margin and they look foolish.

Support for some candidates is indelible, yes.

Witchcraft, anti-masturbation, liar, embezzler, paranoiac. If you asked the Democrats to invent a perfect Republican punching bag, they’d still fall short of her. There’s no excuse for supporting her. None.

And linking me with Romney is fine, insofar as (1) I supported Pawlenty, Cain, and Perry before that, all of whom destroyed themselves, (2) there’s no way on God’s green earth that Gingrich or Santorum would have outperformed him, and (3) Romney never had to run ads denying his involvement in witchcraft.

I picked the best of a terrible field. I’d still pick him again in the same circumstances.

xblade on May 7, 2013 at 9:34 PM

I’m talking about reaching two different people there. My original comment was in response to the suggestion than Sanford’s campaign is a model for Republicans to emulate and that’s not true because of the unique circumstances of the race; it doesn’t work to run against Pelosi when a large chunk of the electorate won’t know who she is. The latter comment was about Democrats reaching their donors who are usually more politically active and engaged and more likely to know who Mark Sanford is. Think of the NAGs, for example. I’m happy to clear up the confusion. :-)
