Neil Cavuto: John King was right to ask about Gingrich’s ex-wife

posted at 8:20 pm on January 20, 2012 by Allahpundit

Chris Wallace agrees. I’d be surprised if there’s a single reporter at Fox who doesn’t. The ex-wife’s interview was the most buzz-heavy horse-race news story of the day; surely plenty of voters who’d read about it were curious to see how Newt would respond. If King hadn’t asked about it, he’d be getting hammered today for ignoring what Wallace aptly described as the “elephant in the room.” And for all the outrage at him, here’s the dirty little not-so-secret of his question: It was a total gift to Newt. Everyone knew it was coming, including/especially the guy who’s made moderator-bashing his forte at these debates. King might as well have been wearing a sign that read, “Please endear yourself to this media-hating conservative audience by punching me in the face.” So Newt punched him in the face for five minutes and got the predictable standing O and proclamations of victory and on we went. By the time the debate was over, Gingrich was telling Anderson Cooper what a “great job” King had done as moderator. Some commenters today seemed confused by that given Newt’s outrage earlier, but there’s nothing inconsistent about it. Of course Newt thought he did a great job: King had just tossed him the most grandstanding-ready softball ever.

In fact, for all of his vitriol about the media, Newt gets along with some of them just fine:

The same candidate who on Thursday decried “the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media” shows another face to the cadre of reporters who follow his campaign day-to-day. He jokes with them, publicly celebrates their birthdays, teases them about the early hour they are often forced out of bed to cover his events.

It’s not unusual for Gingrich to chat with reporters, off-the-record, in the hotel restaurant at the end of a long day on the campaign trail — and he engages them to a degree that’s unheard of on the other campaigns…

Hammond attributes the stark difference between the tongue-lashings Gingrich delivers at debates and the candidate’s relatively warm relationship with the traveling press — mainly embed reporters — to the way they interact with the campaign.

He doesn’t hate the media, but of course he hates The Media. He couldn’t be a conservative standard-bearer if he didn’t. John King belongs to both groups; hence Newt’s bipolar reaction to him last night.

Two clips for you here, one of Cavuto and the other, via Mediaite, of King after the debate. “This is one of those ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’ts.’”

Cindy Munford on January 20, 2012 at 10:12 PM

Sorry, but Newt’s absolutely right on this. People were tuning in to hear about policy, not tabloidy garbage. And whether or not King “handed Gingrich a gift” or not, or whether it was expected, is completely irrelevant. The point is, what is or isn’t legitimate, objective moderation. And King’s wasn’t. Let’s not kid ourselves, King is the media’s 50 bazzilionth far-left activist falsely passing himself off as a journalist. To anyone who believes his “gosh, I darned if I do, darned if I don’t” nonsense, I’ve got some swampland to sell you. If it was Obama he’d been dealing with, Obama’s ex-crack wh*re could have just shown the world live video of Obama raping a union delegate with a golf club, and not only would King not have said a word about it during the debate, but he would have given anyone who suggested he should exactly the speech Gingrich gave him.

Cavuto is a disgrace, and his estrogen-fuelled rant is further evidence that Fox is just another megaphone for the liberal call to prayer. Isn’t Fox partly owned by the Saudi royal family? No wonder Fox doesn’t want Gingrich to win.

I was listening to Rush today and he said that John King is treating his smack down like a badge of honor. King has just made the big time with this and all his buddies are no doubt looking at him with admiration for having the stones to take it to Newt.

One basic fact remains: conservatives of every stripe will never, ever get a fair shake in the media, so it’s pretty much useless ever to expect it. The MSM will always side with the Dems, have and will continue to bend over backwards for them, continue to present them as people who can do no wrong, even as they cover up their transgressions, and automatically run interference for them every chance they get. It’s all about the narrative and they are every bit as complicit as the Dems and GOP establishment in the destruction of this country. It’s not Dem vs. GOP. It’s us, the vast majority of us conservatives, vs. the Dems/MSM/GOP establishment, and the sooner we all realize it, the better.

So I have absolutely no problem with the MSM being called on their hypocrisy and dishonesty by Newt or any candidate. They have it coming in spades.

And Newt had every right to be upset about this and I was happy to see a Conservative stand up to the media. More conservatives should do the same. Look it doesn’t matter what we say, the MSM will never ever give conservatives a fair deal so why not be vocal about their blatant collusion with the left.

I thought we were electing a President , not the captain of the debating team.

Therein lies the problem with Gingrich. He throws out some one liners, offers nothing of substance and people fall for the schtick. Eventually the schtick gets old though and Gingrich is exposed as the emperor wearing no clothes. And of course, naked Newt is a whole other problem.

Cavuto is right but I would go even further and say that Gingrich’s response was a disgrace as was the reaction of the audience. They looked like fools, all of them. Since when do Conservatives lionize politicians? Are moral values for little people?

echosyst on January 20, 2012 at 8:40 PM

It probably has nothing to do with Gingrich, but more of a complete disdain from conservatives towards the media double standard.

When someone finally smacks them around, it doesn’t matter who, there’s going to be this reaction.

If Howdy Doody came out and ripped off John King’s head, he’d be leading the polls.

I like Cavuto, most of the time, this time is not one of them. Save for Gutfeld and a couple more people on Fox I stopped watching it as it has moved to the center with liberals almost outnumbering conservatives on Fox now. Absolutely, I will.

I want to see Newt or someone else with guts (few and far between, I know) on our side pull an Alinsky on the MSM, repeatedly. Someone here mentioned the one about “making the other side live up to their own book of rules.”

This bit of movie dialogue leaped to mind to illustrate it: (objectional words removed)

[McMurphy]: That ****** nurse, man!
[Dr. Spivey]: What do you mean, sir?
[McMurphy]: She ain’t honest.
[Dr. Spivey]: Miss Ratched’s one of the finest nurses we’ve got in this institution.
[McMurphy]: Well, I don’t want to break up the meeting or nothing … but she’s something of a *****, ain’t she, Doc?
[Dr. Spivey]: How do you mean that?
[McMurphy]: She likes a rigged game, you know what I mean?

And very simply, that’s it: the MSM has always liked a rigged game and it’s long past time we not only addressed it but did something about it.
Newt has been firing the opening volleys and we need much more of it done consistently and often.

PatriotGal2257 on January 20, 2012 at 11:06 PM

Had Cavuto ever asked some liberal hack about his/her private life before on TV I could understand Cavuto’s point of view on Newt. But…

Funny how so many supposedly grown ups who supposedly can think are trusting a disgruntled, extremely vindictive ex wife who back in 1995 said she will do everything to make sure Newt is not President. And she hates Newt so much that she even kept his last name after divorce /s Anyone who believes anything coming out of this vindictive broad’s mouth now is pretty slow, to put it bluntly. It took you until now to realize that? I am mostly off Fox for the better part of past 3 years for these reasons. And its getting progressively worse, ever since Murdoch had a “meeting” with DoJ over phone tapping scandal. Just put the two and two together, Murdoch was not charged nor did time over the investigation, and more and more liberals hacks are appearing on Fox now and even supposedly conservative people, such as Cavuto, sound more and more to the left these days.

riddick on January 21, 2012 at 1:23 AM

I don’t get why anyone thinks ol’ Marianne is breaking news. Anyone who actually knew or researched Gingrich’s record knew that he very callously threw over his first wife while she was recovering from cancer surgery, having been cheating on her with ol’ Marianne, and then did the same thing to ol’ Marianne with Callista.

None of this was a secret and I’m extremely disappointed in Republican voters for so blindly supporting such an immoral creep. Add to that his complete failure in Congress, cuddling up to Pelosi on global warming, and his making millions off of Freddie and Fannie while they were screwing taxpayers and creating the housing crisis, and it’s plain that he is NOT a viable candidate for POTUS.

Common Sense on January 21, 2012 at 1:26 AM

Sorry, AP, I not buying what you are selling.

The leftstream media would never ask a similar question to Obama.

There have been persistant rumors about Obama being a member of “Man’s Country,” a Chicago gay bathhouse. Is it true? Who knows, because the media won’t investigate.

Obama’s transcript and/or financial aid records? Huckabee raised a valid point about Romney producing tax returns the moment Obama supplies his college and law school transcripts. Will the media ever ask? Forgetaboutit!

Obama was a bachelor a decade before he married Michelle. Who did he date? what does she (or he) have to say about Barack. We know all about Newt’s ex-wives, after all. And if it is important to hear from Newt’s exes, then why isn’t it important to hear from Obama’s exes?

What was the real relationship between Ayers and his wife and the Obamas? And when is the media going to breach the subject of them working on the same boards for half a decade?

Brian Ross supposedly “broke” the Jeremiah Wright story? Why didn’t he give up and let the story die at the Obama campaign’s request?

How about Obama’s crack dealer? Has anybody in the media tried to find out who he was and interview him?

The leftstream media deliberately covered up John Edwards affair, even though it involved a child out of wedlock, his wife dying of terminal cancer, and money illegally converted from his campaign chest to pay off his doxie. And they have the balls to demand answers from Gingrich about accusations from his bitter hag ex-wife?

King deserved the kicking he got. Too bad he had to take lumps that Brian Ross deserved, but that’s the breaks.

If King hadn’t asked about it, he’d be getting hammered today for ignoring what Wallace aptly described as the “elephant in the room.”

It is only an ‘elephant in the room’ to someone who needs to know the sex habits of monkies to fulfill a trip to the zoo

The question belonged in a news conference. If unanswered, the question could be posed on billboards, news headlines, with picket signs, but somewhere in a land far far away, pigs rooting for truffles forgot that the purpose of a debate is to expose the depth of ideas of the candidates, their skills, anything except their sex habits – unless those habits are public knowlege, undisputed, and interconnected with the ability to govern. Otherwise it is not a debate, it is an inquisition without the benefit of counsel and corroborating evidence

It may be a character issue, but it is not a debatable issue. Just what are the other candidates going to do, call witnesses?

On a lesser level, Santorum insisting a lot of folk did not like working with Newt is not a good debate point. He merely had to ask Newt (debate style) why he did X, Y or Z as Speaker. That would have been a debate.

Santorum is so good when he argues policy, but looked petty when he wasted a million dollar debate to state that people don’t like Newt (ergo – what?)

Thanks to the stupid opener, Newt got a boost, and the others got some cover to stay on topic, if they were smart enough to take it.

well cavuto and fox are part of the elite DC culture of corruption media so of course they are the same as CNN

Roger Ailes laughs at people he has convinced that fox is some kind of American values conservative channel

cavuto’s shares in News Corp are now valued at over $100,000,000 so my guess is that he will tow the line that Murdoch wants and Murdoch wants Obama in for another four years…it is good for ratings, and he knows that Romney is a sure loser to Obama so he wants his boy romney to get the nod and to lose graciously to Obama

Some calling themselves conservatives are just celebrity followers who think Fox news ispart of the conservative movement. I love Fox. except O’Reilly, but I know they are in the news/entertainment business.

borntoraisehogs on January 21, 2012 at 4:25 AM

Cavuto is a good guy, very fair, and he couldn’t be more right about this. Those are some mighty impressive conspiracy theories you got there, georgealbert. You got anything intelligent to say?
If so, it would be the first time.

Newt loves the roar of the crowd, as narcissists do. That’s why he throws out the red meat, and admittedly, he’s very good at it. But how many times can he go to this smack-around-the-media well?

It’s annoyingly self-righteous. But it’s also Newtie’s way of avoiding questions that he just doesn’t want to answer. More intelligent voters will begin to notice the method to his self-serving madness. Cavuto called him on it in a prior debate. If Newt thinks he can repeatedly use bombast and sanctimony to propel himself to victory, he isn’t nearly as smart as he thinks he is.

Of course the media is hopelessly biased, but the Sarah Palin victim mentality is not an election-winning strategy. Railing at a debate moderator may work with an angry Republican base that wants an angry nominee willing to grab Obama by the throat, but it will not play well with a national electorate. Most Americans don’t want their leaders to be mean, nasty attack dogs.

The Republicans need to decide: do they want to see Obama humiliated, or do they want him out of the WH? Gingrich may be able to accomplish the former, but look at his favorabilities–he’s got no chance of accomplishing the latter.

It certainly seems to be turning out that way.
Cavuto , just like the NYC /DC/LA elites could not believe what he saw in that CNN debate . How dare those illitrate Southerners with their unsophisticated drawls and ignorant philosphies applause , not once but over and over again and show their support to the candidate instead of a media celebrity ?
How dare Gingrich , another Southerner who is supposed to be an uneducated hick , smackdown a journOlist , in public ?
Gingrich was supposed to defend himself in a meek submissive tone and mumble some simple words about being sorry and apologize for his past, and then stand there quietly waiting for his turn to speak . How dare Gingrich turn the situation around to his favor and leave the kingmaker from CNN almost gasping for words ?
Cavuto’s arrogance can’t handle Gingrich’s ego, because Gingrich is not supposed to have one because Cavuto says so .
FOX is in attack mode, Wallace, Williams , Rivera and now Cavuto…what does that say about FOX for hatin on Gingrich and making it personal ?

So Newt can render a beating on the media in a public forum but treat them amicably afterward. Sounds like a man who knows exactly how to handle the media. Treat them well informally, after all they are just doing their jobs, but put the fear in them that if they want to tackle you head on, they better be prepared to suffer dire consequences.

I seldom disagree with Mr. Cavuto but I most certainly do on this. Had this issue come up at any other time than two days before a major primary, I might agree with Cavuto, Wallace & King. However that was not the case, ABC had been sitting on this for some time and decided Thursday would be the best time to release it. It was a blatant attempt to smear the candidate and Newt was correct in calling it despicable. I think media bias has gotten out of hand and should be pointed out when it’s that obvious. I don’t watch the networks any longer except for sports and that’s only good for as long as they can’t politicize it.

What is behind all this is that the media (who really selects and elects – whether as moderators or reporters and pundits) is finally being attacked by the candidates. Romney too moderate and extreme conservatism can win elections. Gingrich having hood winked SC into believing he’s a man of honor. And all because Newtie refuses to discuss something the left will eventually cream him with. Insanity reigns. I smell a leftie trap so enjoy while you can. This moderate is walking away.

jimver on January 20, 2012 at 10:12 PM

Obviously you live on a different planet than we do. Have you seen the orator in action without the TPOTUS? He couldn’t get one statistic correct if it was tattooed on his arm. The man is a walking mistake. Newt would question everyone of his statements and show them to be wrong. If Obama did not keep his comments very very generic and fact free Newt would crucify him. Remember ALL of his speeches are written for him and even then he gets the facts wrong.
Cavuto has been slowly drifting towards the “Fairness” doctrine on Wall Street in the last couple of years and I do believe that he is a squish behind his fat head. He seems to have become the liberal of the two now that Dobbs is working for Fox.

inspectorudy on January 21, 2012 at 10:48 AM

Newt knew that question was coming, and he prepared for it. Newt’s MO is blasting moderators who will not fight back.

Philly on January 20, 2012 at 8:27 PM

You seemed to have missed the fact that John King tried to fight back, but Newt knocked him down again.
Maybe you should watch the clip again, or was your misstatement intentional?

GaltBlvnAtty on January 20, 2012 at 8:45 PM

John King will respond with a follow up, but he wasn’t going to delve into Newt’s past hypocrisy over the Lewinsky scandal. He would have done so in a personal interview, but not a debate. Juan Williams didn’t counter either. Neither did anyone question the “gotcha question” comment.

It’s appropriate in that format for John King to explain the origin of the question, but not to conduct an lengthy dialogue. Newt and the rest of the candidates know that. The timing of those debates is tight and the other moderators would have asked King to move on. That is a forum for them to hash out issues. King invited the other candidates to do that by asking them their opinions on the subject.

Philly on January 21, 2012 at 10:57 AM

I agree. IF I were a journalist asking questions I would have asked about the ex-wife interview too.

But Gingrich got his disdain and very good response in and go with me here, the base voters aren’t going to get mad at Newt for embarrassing King. The cheer goes up because well hey, did King or his colleagues ask about that wonderful John Edwards who knocked up a woman while his wife was dying from cancer?

John Edwards who WAS an actual nominee to win the vice-presidency?

So if Cavuto et al want to march on specifics, so okay. But us do-dos out here in la-la land where we carry this country on our backs, we ain’t journalists and we know how unfair they’ve been.

That’s correct, and it’s also the reason the networks and Obama absolutely hate the Internet in its present form and want to see it either under their control or neutered so as to be useless. The FCC’s hamhanded attempt to regulate the Internet via “Net Neutrality,” and the whole SOPA/PIPA issue can all be seen as backdoor attempts to do just that — censor it. With a little digging, it’s been within the range of anyone to find out the truth about any politician via articles, audio, and video which often contradicts the carefully crafted stories of the MSM, or at the very least shows that much of American political life is not the stark black and white they make it out to be. Marriage is not just sex.

Marriage begins with a public ceremony and a sacred vow. It is a very public aspect of our culture.

The fact that Newt has engaged in that public institution three times is relevant. The fact that he has had 2 ongoing affairs in violation of his public vows matters.

Newt chose to come before the community and make public declarations of lifetime fidelity to each of his wives. This is most definitely something which voters should consider.

Shame on anyone who brushes this aside as irrelevant or old news.

He confessed and repented. As far as I know he was sincere as there has been no issue for 15 years. I’ve noticed that a lot of non-Christians (and some Christians, but mostly non) are really up in arms about Newt’s past sins.

I expect the non-Christians to be unforgiving. It is human nature. Christians, however, should know better. The Bible is clear on the matter. Some examples:

Jesus and the adulteress.

Jesus and the tax collector.

Jesus and the thief.

Luke 6:37, Luke 17:3, Col 3:13

Don’t tell us Christians that we are hypocrites for forgiving Newt of infractions made 15 years ago and has since asked repentance for. It would be hypocrisy NOT to forgive him. We are to forgive any who sincerely repent. Again, based on 15 years of fidelity (as far as I know) Newt’s previous sins of infidelity are now a moot point for me.

I am more concerned with his sharing a couch with Pelosi, not happy with his Bain attack and some other comments. However, despite his flaws, his record is still better than Romney (who is an unabashed and unrepentant supporter of government mandated healthcare).

I’ll vote for Romney in the general, but he has to win the primary first. Until then, I’m for Newt or Santorum (unlikely).

Pattosensei on January 21, 2012 at 12:36 PM

I don’t get why anyone thinks ol’ Marianne is breaking news. Anyone who actually knew or researched Gingrich’s record knew that he very callously threw over his first wife while she was recovering from cancer surgery, having been cheating on her with ol’ Marianne, and then did the same thing to ol’ Marianne with Callista.

Nope. Not true. Gingrich’s daughter, with her mother’s approval, blew that “served his wife divorce papers while in the hospital for cancer surgery” thing out of the water. She asked him for a divorce some months before that hospital visit. The biopsy that she got during the famous hospital episode showed that the lump was benign. Gingrich had simply brought their daughters to visit her at the hospital, and then the two of them got into an argument that was overheard by staff members, and the story took off from there. Jackie Gingrich wrote a letter that was also posted here on Hot Air some months past about the whole thing.

As for Marianne Gingrich, so what? She’s a homewrecker, who thought things would be different for her. I hope things will be different this time for Mrs. Gingrich #3 but I really don’t much care. I just want someone in the office of President who will help turn the country around from the disaster towards which we are rushing with Obama’s lead foot on the accelerator. If Gingrich is nominated, he’ll have my vote. If Romney is nominated, he’ll have it. If they decide to nominate a week-old, half eaten, dessicated ham sandwich with bird droppings on the bread, I’ll vote for it, too.

obviously you got too high on your ‘forgiving Christian’ soapbox and got blinded to the differences between state and federal govt, I won’t even go in there if you are so ignorant as not to understand said differences. Romney stated clearly that while at the time, and under those particular circumstances it looked like a good idea to have mandated healthcare at the state level, and mainly because the people of MA wanted it, he is firmly opposed to a healthcare mandate at the fed govt level, but this little ‘detail’ I suppose is totally lost on you, and on most ignoramuses who comment on HA… so maybe what you should read more often and quote from, other than the bible, is the constitution… go, take a look and see what they say there about state vs fed govt, and what states can do and why it’s ok to do it at the state level, and what the fed govt can’t do and shouldn’t….and btw, while you can forgive somebody, it’s pretty much a personal decision, and it has nothing to do with God or the Spaghetti monster… especially that the fact that you forgive somebody it’s more a reflection on you than on the respective person…the fact that you personally ‘forgave’ Newt for his past transgressions etc might mean something to you, it really doesn’t mean anything to most people and it doesn’t make him less of a sleazebag and of a hypocrite in the eyes of most people, he’s still that, whether you ‘forgive’ him or not, you cannot erase his humongous hypocrisy….simply because it does not matter who you forgive (or not), that in itself does not make a sleazebag a better person…
PS I always love the ‘if he sincerely repents’,blah, blah, blah, and how do you gauge if he repented ‘sincerely’ or not, do you have a meter for that, did you put him through a lie detector? :-)..though me afraid that I guess that any machine would blow up if you put Gingrich to a lie or hypocrisy test :-)
