New Santorum ad: Don’t follow the Orwellian GOP establishment off a cliff again

posted at 6:56 pm on January 18, 2012 by Allahpundit

Grassroots conservatives will love love love it, but grassroots conservatives are already firmly in the Anybody But Mitt camp. Santorum doesn’t need to convince them to vote against Romney, he needs to convince undecideds and tepid Gingrich supporters to break for him instead of Newt. How does this help him do that? And what will low-information voters in South Carolina make of this metaphor? If I followed politics sporadically I wouldn’t even know that a GOP “establishment” exists, let alone that I was some unwitting drone in their scheme of dystopian subsmission. All I’d know is that Romney seems to know his stuff and that political ads tend to be over the top.

The inspiration here should be obvious, but I’ve embedded it below so that you can compare and contrast. Exit question: Hasn’t this already been done? It worked out okay last time, actually!

Uhh, AP: low information types almost NEVER vote in primaries, or do so in far lower numbers. Dumbing down for Primary voters is a serious mistake.

Great ad.

I still like Santorum better than Newt. But either one is far, far, preferable to the Massachusetts Lib.

Norwegian on January 18, 2012 at 7:01 PM

And, being Newt Has worked for DECADES as a DC insider, it also dings Newt a bit as well.

michaelo on January 18, 2012 at 7:01 PM

Uhh, AP: low information types almost NEVER vote in primaries, or do so in far lower numbers. Dumbing down for Primary voters is a serious mistake.

Yeah, they’re not the highest turnout group, but some will vote. And this could be very close between Romney and Gingrich.

Again, how does this help Santorum surge past Newt?

Allahpundit on January 18, 2012 at 7:02 PM

This reminds me of the Clinton obama Apple ad back in 2008. Santorum continues to make false ads against Romney. That is probably why the Tea party is going completely for him. Have you seen the latest poll shows that Romney and Santorum are equal in positive intensity and Romney is tied with Gingrich with Tea Party support. Yes many of the Tea party support Romney. Take for example http://www.TeaPartyForRomney.com. Are they created by the ‘Establishment’ like santorum’s ad says, no. Come to find out one of them campaign for Joe Miller in Alaska against Murkowski. Could it be Tea Partiers do support Romney?

Look, I’m no Romney supporter, but Romney is a disaster for the GOP. Just saying.

Allahpundit on January 18, 2012 at 7:02 PM

It doesn’t, of course. Just like calling Obama a socialist doesn’t help you a whit with undecided voters of any persuasion. Doesn’t stop “informed conservatives” from advising that strategy.

It doesn’t.

JohnGalt23 on January 18, 2012 at 7:06 PM

Not a terrible ad. Santorum is my first choice and always has been. But he cannot get past the Christ-haters and “moderate smart kids” of the GOP to even be a contender.

Those seems to be real live actors; they’re not edited in from some other video. Correct me if I’m wrong, but that and other features makes this the commercial with the most expensive production values of any this season. And it’s pretty cool as art, but for the reasons Allah mentioned, it seems to be a pretty dubious political use of campaign money. (But don’t many campaign consultants get paid per commercial airtime?)

Newt has more skeletons in the closet than Ted Bundy. Here’s a great idea: let’s elect the Pelosi-palling, capitalism-bashing, Paul Ryan-trashing “real conservative” with 2 angry, betrayed ex-wives hanging over his campaign like the Sword of Damocles. That’s totally the ticket to victory!!

Hey, newtbots, have you seen the headline news over at Drudge yet?

Marianne Gingrich has said she could end her ex-husband’s career with a single interview.
Earlier this week, she sat before ABCNEWS cameras, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned… MORE… Developing…

She spoke to ABCNEWS reporter Brian Ross for two hours. Her explosive revelations are set to rock the campaign. But now a “civil war” has erupted inside of the network, an insider claims, on exactly when the confession will air!

ABCNEWS suits determined it would be “unethical” to run the Marianne Gingrich interview so close to the South Carolina Primary

It worked so well that, having run only once in the 1984 Super Bowl telecast and never again, people still remember it 38 years later.

He’s right.

The Republican party just gets closer and closer to the middle every election cycle. In 25 years, they’ll resemble the current Democrat party, and the Democrat party will be the most far left group we’ve ever seen.

If Romney really is our nominee, I think he’ll lose. Four more years of Obama, but to think…Maybe people will embrace conservatism and the Republican party will rid itself of the RINOs.

YoungAmerican on January 18, 2012 at 8:14 PM

Santorum would be great against obama, and we wouldn’t even have to hold our noses to vote for him.

Pork-Chop on January 18, 2012 at 7:27 PM

Oddly, conservative websites of late are full of Romney supporters that consider “gay rights” to be THE central aspect of conservativism, while Romney’s leftwing record isn’t particularly important.

Anyway, if we want to win, we need a full spectrum conservative like Santorum. But so many “conservatives” are more afraid of winning with an honest soc con then losing with the architect of Obamacare V1.0

18-1 on January 18, 2012 at 8:22 PM

Of course there is one irony here.

Reagan destroyed the dystopian societal model predicted in 1984 – which this ad references – but the model that comes from A Brave New World continues going ahead at full speed.

18-1 on January 18, 2012 at 8:27 PM

18-1 on January 18, 2012 at 8:22 PM

I’m curious when you say “full spectrum” conservative…are you referring to Santorum’s support of Arlen Specter, his support for medicare part D, or his five votes to raise the debt ceiling?

peachaeo on January 18, 2012 at 8:38 PM

Santorum’s conservative credits?

While Romney was running to the left of Ted Kennedy he was reforming welfare and fighting the government shut down battle.

While Romney was crafting Obamacare V1.0, Santorum was fighting for conservative judges.

And in regards to national security he’s been a middle of the road conservative.

So yes, full spectrum conservative.

If you want Obamacare, AGW legislation and the like, vote for Romney. If you don’t want an America government like the Massachusetts one, vote for Santorum.
