Laura Ingraham, Erick Erickson: It’s time for Perry to go
posted at 4:51 pm on January 18, 2012 by Allahpundit
Hard to argue. South Carolina’s the last stand of the Not Romneys. Join or die. Erickson:
For a generation, Rick Perry was undefeated. Now he will go back to Texas and everyone who ever lost to Rick Perry will seek to settle old scores. It will be a tough, bloody fight. He will have to be ready for it.
Perry, however, has a potential trump card up his sleeve as he rebuilds political capital. It’s simple: he can drop out today, and endorse someone else. Doing so today, before the CNN Debate tomorrow, gives the news time to sink in…
Huntsman has already done his part to help Romney. Perry’s endorsement today or tomorrow morning could offset that, shifting undecideds and Perry’s own voters to someone else and get them a leg up on Mitt Romney. With Newt Gingrich surging according to the latest Rasmussen poll and Sarah Palin saying she’d support him, Perry’s withdrawal and endorsement before Saturday could ensure a Gingrich win.
Rick Perry’s campaign has come to an end. But he could leave on an unexpected high note — helping conservatives unite around one not-Romney in a way no one else has been able to. Rick Perry could be the catalyst and kingmaker so many have been looking for, even as other conservatives have stood by, unwilling to endorse in the face of long odds.
Gingrich wrote the foreword to Perry’s book, Erickson reminds us, so jumping on the Newt bandwagon now would make sense not just politically but personally. Erick and the Red State guys know him much better than I ever will but my sense of him from his rhetoric on the trail is that he’d rather press on to the bitter end and let voters stop the fight on Saturday — notwithstanding the weakened position that would leave him in back home — than hit the mat for strategic advantage. Go read this piece, for instance, recounting a Perry appearance in Spartanburg 10 days ago. The idea of forging on honorably and never giving up obviously means a lot to him, or at least it did 10 days ago. Maybe the calculus has changed now that it’s clear there’ll be no eleventh-hour surge — or maybe he thinks Gingrich is bound to fall short against Romney even with Perry’s five percent. If he dropped out and endorsed Newt and Romney still won, he’d earn a little goodwill for falling on his sword to try to stop Mitt but he’d get no “kingmaker” stature and he’d antagonize the almost-certain nominee and possible next president.
His spokesman seems to be handling the idea … not so well:
Mark Miner, a spokesman for Perry, said the Texas governor is focused on the people of South Carolina, not the pundits declaring the end of his campaign. “Pundits aren’t going to decide this race. The people of South Carolina are going to decide this race,” Miner said. “The governor’s focused on the people of South Carolina and their votes, not a pundit sitting behind a computer somewhere.”
Asked if there is a chance Perry will drop out of the race before Saturday, Miner said, “We are in this race through the primary. … There is no intention of leaving this race.”
Note to Miner: That random pundit sitting behind his computer screen is the same guy who introduced Perry before his big announcement speech this summer. And it’s not just Erickson who thinks it’s time. Click here and skip ahead to 4:15 to hear Laura Ingraham ring the bell on Perry too. Exit question: If he’s going to do this, how much time does he have left to decide? The CNN debate is 27 hours away.

As I said, makes one wonder if pasting together short books of little substance or thought filled with anti-liberal rants by both of these women is really because they are on the conservative side or have found a way to make some bucks and get noticed.

The real problem is none of the candidates are consistently conservative.
Perry-Texas Dream Act, Gardasil, crony capitalism
Paul-Muslim’s only hate us because of our military, let’s cut it
Santorum-big government, opposed right to work, intrusively socon
Gingrich-just pulled global warming chapter from upcoming book, anti-capitalist, took huge amounts of functionally lobbying money from FM, anti-Ryan plan, pro individual insurance mandate, fairly repugnant personal life
Romney-Romneycare
Makes me wish Pawlenty, Cain and Bachmann had stayed in. Is there some way to shorten this very painful primary process? Could we somehow get everyone to vote on the same day and maybe do runoffs? This is a very bad method of picking a candidate to run against an incumbent because there will be over a year of negative ads against the Republican candidate before we get to the general, and almost nothing against Obama.

I don’t know what Perry’s dropping out now is supposed to accomplish. I doubt all his supporters go to any one candidate, and I bet more than a few (like me) would go to Romney. So there’s not really anything “honorable” about calling it quits; the only thing it does is limit choices for us.
And as others have said, we need time to vet the candidates–and since so few delegates have been in play yet, I don’t understand why some are acting like we don’t have time.
Also, it’s not that hard to imagine a scenario where Gingrich flames out (or where people start realizing that there’s more to being president than chewing out the press) or where Santorum runs out of funds (or where people realize there’s no real reason he did as well as he did in Iowa except that he was one of only a couple of candidates who hadn’t yet shot to the top). Or even where the recently released oppo research on Romney damages his standing among some supporters.
It’s not really a matter of if the other candidates will drop out or tank; it’s a matter of when. So the smart thing for Perry to do is to play the long game. I hope he stays in until the very end, because I think he is our best shot against Obama and our best shot at a recovery from the Obama wreckage.

Well, Gardasil is not exactly as big a deal as, say, RomneyCARE. And Perry included an OPT-OUT, which those that do not support him always fail to mention. The parents had the choice to opt-out. Not so very horribly anti-conservative. Not in my book.
Again I will say that he has the MOST CONSISTENT conservative record. That is what I want. A record to show me what I can actually expect of the man. Compare his record to Romney.
No, Perry is no quitter either, and I honor and respect him for it. So I am sticking with Perry, and staying true to my conservative Libertarian convictions.

This has got to be coming from the media simply trying to stir the pot. There have only been two states that have voted so far out of 50, it looks like Romney won 1 New Hampshire and Santorum won Iowa. Why should anyone drop out? South Carolina only awards 25 delegates it’s not winner take all.
If anyone should drop out it’s Santorum, but it sounds like he plans on going on to Florida.

Oh Horace, you know there’s no such thing as coincidences…now you are sure about that 5% it’s solid right ;)
In the Cayman Romney thread, there is speculation that ABC wanted to save the interview for mayhem in the general if Newt won. Newt’s ex wife isn’t under contract with ABC if they don’t want to air her interview, she can speak on another network, it’s not like there is only one…I wonder if Mitt will send a limo to take her to the interview LOL!
Dr Evil on January 18, 2012 at 7:24 PM
Perry can rise again, mark my word.
I remember at the beginning of October, I knew Newt would rise. Because a) Perry was “done”, b) Cain was about to unravel, and c) Mitt was in no danger of catching fire. The logic behind Newt’s predicted rise was clear.
And now? For Perry… the things that caused him to fade… are fading. If the anti-Mitt feelings persist, as is predictable, Perry’s engaging performance in the last debate, if that is a sign of things to come, will give him the ticket to ride.. up.
Newt? This attempt to climb back up is not going to fly for long: the things that brought Newt down in December are so very easily called back. The ethics & adultery issues, and whatnot, are too grave. Newt is sunk. And Santorum’s penchant for clumsy unrefined undiplomatic talk about the highly charged social issues of gay marriage & abortion exceptions for rape etc. leave him… hobbled.
The path is clear now for a Perry rerise. Don’t make the Pawlenty mistake. A Super Tuesday sweep seems outlandish now, but how things change so dramatically in ~ 2 months. (It was a very strong debate for Perry. Plus, as of today we see two consecutive upticks in the gallop national tracker for Perry: this is the first time this [2 up days in a row] has happened for Perry since DEC 14th. )
anotherJoe on January 18, 2012 at 7:32 PM
Agreed. I’ve been pulling for a Perry comeback, but its not emerging. Perry is only getting single digit support in South Carolina; he will not save face by soldiering on to a crushing defeat in a Southern state on Saturday. The only chance of stopping Mitt Romney, or at least forcing him into a real fight for the nomination, is unity behind Newt. Perry can either exit now and try to rally momentum for Newt heading into South Carolina, or Mitt Romney will be the nominee. It is that simple.

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry today issued the following statement on the Citizen Legislators Act filed today by Illinois Congressman Timothy V. Johnson.
“I applaud Rep. Johnson for filing legislation to create a part-time, citizen congress that will restore the vision of our founding fathers. This bill aligns closely with my Uproot and Overhaul Washington plan, which calls for cutting congressional sessions, staffs and salaries in half.
“I support Rep. Johnson’s legislation because I believe members of Congress should spend less time in Washington and more time living at home under the laws they pass with the people they represent.
“Americans are tired of Washington politicians who are out of touch, spend all their time inside the beltway, and whose reckless spending and corrupt practices are endangering our great nation. It is time to send these politicians back home to get real jobs rather than spending all their time in Washington spending money we don’t have on programs we don’t need.
“With a part-time congress, we can save taxpayers billions of dollars, end the permanent political class and begin a complete overhaul of Washington’s broken status quo.”

Texas Gov. Rick Perry proposed a five-year holiday from income taxes for wounded veterans as part of his bid for conservative support in the state’s primary on Saturday.
“If you have been wounded, if the (Defense Department) has designated you as an individual who has been wounded while you have been on service to the United States, you get a five-year exemption from paying any personal income tax in this country,” Perry told a crowd of about 60 people at a Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall here. “That’s sending the message. That’s sending (a) message that will last longer than a parade, that will last longer than a proclamation on the war, than a pat on the back. … If you sacrificed that much for your country, the least this country can do is give you that type of support when you come back.”
The Wounded Warrior Project, an organization dedicated to supporting injured veterans, estimates that about 32,000 troops were wounded in Operation Iraqi Freedom and nearly 10,000 in Operation Enduring Freedom, the war in Afghanistan.
Perry often talks about the need to improve support for veterans in the United States, especially as he has increasingly focused on South Carolina, where 11 percent of the population is made up of military veterans. He points to initiatives he ushered through in Texas, including a 2009 law that exempts disabled veterans from paying property taxes.

It’s an odd thing because McCain endorsed Romney, and his running mate in 2008 Sarah Palin, made that statement about voting for Gingrich in South Carolina. It looks like Romney vs Gingrich campaign, but it seems like someone is pulling strings behind the scenes, who knows the media doesn’t want the republican’s nominee to be really vetted so they can use their weaknesses against the nominee in the general.
Someone is doing an end around the LSM- usually in these kind of circumstances, I would look to Karl Rove…..

Yes, you may. Mitts a weather-vane. Push from the right, and he’ll go to the right. Gingrich is a loose cannon who believes his press clippings that he’s a “genius”, and fantasizes that he’s a “statesman.” That’s why he sat down on that couch w/ Pelosi.
I think that Romney has a much better chance of winning than Newt, and is less likely to cut deals with the Democrats (so long as Republicans control the House and the Senate.
I’d rather have Perry, because he’s an actual small government conservative. None of the other remaining candidates are. Given that, if Perry drops out I’m going for the guy most likely to win, and least likely to make conservatives look bad.
And that’s Mitt Romney.

Sorry, I figured people here aren’t totally ignorant.
newt Gingrich sat on a couch and did a pro-global warming ad with Nancy Pelosi. He’s smart enough, and claims to understand science enough, that he could ahve done the research and figured out the AGW is a pile of crap.
But he’s intellectually vain, flighty, and unserious, so he went with the bien pensant view and did the stupid ad.
Then there was his crack against Ryan’s Medicare plan as “right-wing social engineering”. Conservatives don’t use “right-wing” as a pejorative.
If Newt’s the Republican nominee, you’re going to see the biggest “gender gap” in the vote in history, and Newt will lose.
Greg Q on January 18, 2012 at 10:11 PM
True, but “whatever I want to call him” is “lunatic”. So that’s a no-dice proposition. :-)

Rick Perry should stay in. Perry is THE only conservative in this race. There is NO enthusiasm in the republican party for Romney…you know Romney will be just like McCain…he will not take it to Obama and he will lose.
Possibility of a brokered convention….Perry could surprise everyone.

PERRY ALL THE WAY
nancysabet on January 18, 2012 at 10:59 PM
See! If you look through this thread, the Perry vote would go to ROMNEY three to one IF Perry drops out.
How does that help Newt? How?
Be fricken careful what you wish for.
GrandeMe on January 18, 2012 at 11:18 PM
Folks how many times have the pundits and media told us whom we should support? How many times have we been happy with that decision? HW, Dole,W and Mccain we conservatives have been sold out time and again. This time I am not settling. It is time to draw the final lime in the sand and defend it. Rick Perry is the only president we have to offer. Spare me the tired immigration lies and tardisil distortions these Romney attacks have long been discredited and everyone knows it. Romney is legislatively identical to Obama. From mandates to tax policy they are two peas in a pod. Gingrich is a great debater but has no executive experience and more baggage than American Airlines. Santorum did I really need to go into santorum? For those of us who do not wish to unilaterally disarm and leave Europe and the rest of our world to the whims of crazy jihadists we have a single choice. Consider all that Rick Perry has accomplished with his opportunity as governor. Many believe that he had it easy in Texas that somehow we where always conservatives. This is false. Rick Perry was the first republican Lt. Governor in Texas history did you know that? Rick Perry inherited a divided government from W did you know that? Rick Perry built the conservative majorities we enjoy in Texas one success at a time. Rick Perry has built Texas into the jobs engine of America claiming over 54% of the net new jobs created in the entire country. Rick Perry has built Texas into the number 1 exporter in the country. Rick Perry has a plan and its not smoke mirrors and campaign promises. You can see his plan in action. Rick Perry has the resume, the experience and he has lived a life worthy of the opportunity to represent us and our party in the coming election. Isn’t it time we forgive some early mistakes in debates? A few mistaken gaffes? Look at his recent debate performances and consider if you think he has overcome his early failings. Listen to the mans plans and see if you don’t agree. Look at his record and ask yourself if he is serious. We owe it to ourselves, our country and our children to give Rick Perry another look. It’s not to late we can still elect a conservative, successful and experienced candidate to represent us.

I’m not a Perry fan but I prefer him to Newt or Santorum. I don’t believe either Newt or Perry are genuinely conservatives, they’re just politicians pandering for conservative votes IMO, but while Newt is an authoritarian technocrat, Perry seems like an easygoing guy. I think he’s still married to his first wife too, though I’m not sure. And while Santorum seems more genuine to me than Newt or Perry, (less pandering), he is more uptight than Perry and supports big, religious government. Perry is also into big-religion but, unlike Santorum, he doesn’t have the nations sodomy case-law memorized. I don’t think he’s as authoritarian. (Maybe that’s why evangelicals don’t like him and Bachmann; they want big-gov authoritarianism.)
But I’m supporting Ron Paul myself and if older conservatives prefer an authoritarian technocrat with character flaws over an easy going religious guy who doesn’t want to rule peoples lives then I guess that’s their business and maybe Perry should drop out even if he is actually a superior candidate.
FloatingRock on January 18, 2012 at 11:56 PM
I think the lesson of Huckabee and Santorum as compared to Bachmann and Perry is that social conservatives crave powerful central authority to control peoples lives and will accept no compromise.
FloatingRock on January 19, 2012 at 12:05 AM
Yup. I retract my call for Perry to withdraw (not that anyone listened to it) due to this new info. My brain is melting. This is like a soap opera. Aye carumba!
Malachi45 on January 19, 2012 at 1:48 AM
Just caught this. It’s not a “lie”, I got that info from Allahpundit himself a few months ago. I supported Newt up til then as my second choice. I used to post good things about him. I thought the couch was just his falling for global warming — it’s NOT! He did support Cap and Trade. I’ll try to find the link that Allah posted, but that was when I realized I could NEVER support him. The straw that broke the camel’s back.

Marianne Gingrich has vowed for SIXTEEN YEARS that she would destroy Newt if he ran for POTUS and got close to winning. This has NOTHING to do with Mitt. And NO ONE was paying the Cain victims either, those sex harrassment complaints were filed back in the early ’90s AND that women who had an affair with Cain began the affair THIRTEEN YEARS ago. That was ALL Cain’s fault — NO ONE else’s. Just like this with Newt. They are both cheaters and their faults have come to see the light of day. Thank God.
Aslans Girl on January 19, 2012 at 2:39 AM
This is a giant load of bovine excrement! Why don’t these idiots ask for Paul to drop out? Why don’t people call for Romney to step aside for the good of the conservative cause?
And people think the GOP is worth salvaging?!
Kill it and you exile the frauds, the Establishment losers who turned this party into the democrat-lite party!
I refuse to be their blindly obedient slave!
As former democrat Ronald Reagan used to say “I didn’t leave the party, the party left me”, same with these Ruling Class jackasses running the GOP and the morons who shill for them!
insidiator on January 19, 2012 at 7:50 AM
No, he said it’s a result of our interventionist foreign policy, and he wants to make cuts in everything, but the largest expenditures are defense and entitlements. You can’t seriously talk about cutting spending and not cut those two areas.
Regardless, in what way does this not make him a conservative?
You lament no consistent conservatives (even though Paul is one), but then you pine for Pawlenty, Cain, and Bachmann??? Do you see the disconnect here?
