Laura Ingraham, Erick Erickson: It’s time for Perry to go
posted at 4:51 pm on January 18, 2012 by Allahpundit
Hard to argue. South Carolina’s the last stand of the Not Romneys. Join or die. Erickson:
For a generation, Rick Perry was undefeated. Now he will go back to Texas and everyone who ever lost to Rick Perry will seek to settle old scores. It will be a tough, bloody fight. He will have to be ready for it.
Perry, however, has a potential trump card up his sleeve as he rebuilds political capital. It’s simple: he can drop out today, and endorse someone else. Doing so today, before the CNN Debate tomorrow, gives the news time to sink in…
Huntsman has already done his part to help Romney. Perry’s endorsement today or tomorrow morning could offset that, shifting undecideds and Perry’s own voters to someone else and get them a leg up on Mitt Romney. With Newt Gingrich surging according to the latest Rasmussen poll and Sarah Palin saying she’d support him, Perry’s withdrawal and endorsement before Saturday could ensure a Gingrich win.
Rick Perry’s campaign has come to an end. But he could leave on an unexpected high note — helping conservatives unite around one not-Romney in a way no one else has been able to. Rick Perry could be the catalyst and kingmaker so many have been looking for, even as other conservatives have stood by, unwilling to endorse in the face of long odds.
Gingrich wrote the foreword to Perry’s book, Erickson reminds us, so jumping on the Newt bandwagon now would make sense not just politically but personally. Erick and the Red State guys know him much better than I ever will but my sense of him from his rhetoric on the trail is that he’d rather press on to the bitter end and let voters stop the fight on Saturday — notwithstanding the weakened position that would leave him in back home — than hit the mat for strategic advantage. Go read this piece, for instance, recounting a Perry appearance in Spartanburg 10 days ago. The idea of forging on honorably and never giving up obviously means a lot to him, or at least it did 10 days ago. Maybe the calculus has changed now that it’s clear there’ll be no eleventh-hour surge — or maybe he thinks Gingrich is bound to fall short against Romney even with Perry’s five percent. If he dropped out and endorsed Newt and Romney still won, he’d earn a little goodwill for falling on his sword to try to stop Mitt but he’d get no “kingmaker” stature and he’d antagonize the almost-certain nominee and possible next president.
His spokesman seems to be handling the idea … not so well:
Mark Miner, a spokesman for Perry, said the Texas governor is focused on the people of South Carolina, not the pundits declaring the end of his campaign. “Pundits aren’t going to decide this race. The people of South Carolina are going to decide this race,” Miner said. “The governor’s focused on the people of South Carolina and their votes, not a pundit sitting behind a computer somewhere.”
Asked if there is a chance Perry will drop out of the race before Saturday, Miner said, “We are in this race through the primary. … There is no intention of leaving this race.”
Note to Miner: That random pundit sitting behind his computer screen is the same guy who introduced Perry before his big announcement speech this summer. And it’s not just Erickson who thinks it’s time. Click here and skip ahead to 4:15 to hear Laura Ingraham ring the bell on Perry too. Exit question: If he’s going to do this, how much time does he have left to decide? The CNN debate is 27 hours away.

Perry’s already antagonized Romney and vice versa. Those two clearly don’t like each other. I honestly don’t know if Perry dropping out and endorsing Newt before the primary would give him the bump he needs to finish first(Palin endorsing him on the other hand…), but it can’t hurt. And let’s not kid ourselves. Perry ain’t finishing anywhere but last, so he has little to gain from sticking around. Plus there’s an added bonus if he drops out before the debate. That leaves only 4 candidates onstage which means even more time for Newt and Mittens to go at it.

Newt and Mitt both suck, in equal amounts but in vastly different ways. If Perry’s out, I don’t have a candidate. It will be cheaper, because I won’t give money to either.
Today I am reading how Senator Coburn thinks Newt is a horrible, erratic, egotistical leader, and Sarah Palin in 2009 similar thoughts about him.
If I were his wife, he would’ve divorced me long ago.
I won’t have a man like that in the WH.
juliesa on January 18, 2012 at 4:59 PM
To endorse Newt? The guy who had a 40% lead in Decemeber and squandered it? The guy who supports death panels and Cap and Trade? LOL. Newt is a quitter. He quit on his wives and his Speakership. Perry is no quitter, not before SC he isn’t. Newt squanders every good thing that comes his way. Mitt has Newt’s number — Mitt took Newt down once and he will do it again. Mitt has unleashed brand new Newt attack ads today. Newt will fall under the weight of his own hubris, his own record, his own faults.
Ingraham has had it in for Perry for months. I haven’t taken anything she says seriously for years. Perry owes her NOTHING. She has attacked and attacked him. Pery owes the Establishment NOTHING and NO HELP because they have offered him none.
Last I checked neither Ingraham or Erickson were Perry’s campaign managers or in his inner circle.
Not all “Not-Romneys” are the same. I detest Newt.

There is, a certain danger to dropping out and endorsing Gingrich. If Perry did so, and Romney still wins SC, he goes from being a Kingmaker, to being politically impotent. I know he already seems weak, but he could always make things worse for himself. He probably won’t hurt himself anymore by staying in until SC votes, but taking unnecessary risks beyond that is likely an unwise move.
Probably not gonna happen though. Perry has resisted numerous calls to drop out before now. I suspect he’s just stubborn enough that he’ll stick to it until he’s exhausted his chances.
WolvenOne on January 18, 2012 at 5:05 PM
Mitt is a fellow enemy of conservatism. His record has more in common with democrats, than a Republican. And you can use the “he was in a blue state” argument all you want. You have to win in more than blue states in a national election. While Romney’s type of Republicanism might sell well in blue/purple states, it just won’t cut it elsewhere. At best, He belongs at the bottom of the ticket as a balance to a candidate who has some conservative accomplishments.
portlandon on January 18, 2012 at 5:05 PM
Get real people, this race was over on january 3, Iowa was the only place that the so called RomNots could have stop Mitt Romney, they were defeated in Iowa and lost the nomination there. Even if Nut Gingrinch win SC he will lose Florida and after that this is what follow:
February 2012
February 4 – Nevada Caucuses, Maine Caucuses (state convention through February 11th)
February 7 – Colorado Republican Caucuses, Minnesota Republican Caucuses, Missouri
February 28 – Arizona , Michigan
Remember Nut Gingrich is will not be on the Missouri ballot.

Perry is probably THE biggest disappointment of a candidate we’ve ever seen. He had EVERYTHING going for him when he got in then he opened his mouth. With his record in Texas, which he barely talked about, at least intelligently, he should have cleaned up in this field. Say what you want about his immigration policies but it was a winner for him in the general since most people favor some path to citizenship for non-felon aliens.
Getting out now and endorsing Newt will garner him major props in my book.

Abby Adams on January 18, 2012 at 5:09 PM
Why should he drop out? One of the reasons they run is to give a voice to the rest of us. I know many of you don’t like Perry, but he was right on social security, the border, and taxes. He hasn’t pandered or wavered. He has been the most consistent conservative in the race.
If and when Mitt wins, it won’t be because of Perry’s run.
But, ABO.
jazzuscounty on January 18, 2012 at 5:09 PM
I thought Perry won the last debate. It is he, unlike progressive Newt & big govt Santorum, that stands firmly, and now eloquently, to do away with all the things we want to do away with. It is clear that the senior-moment episode was an aberration. So we should support him even if his numbers are low, as he has all the ingredients to make a slow rerise, to culminate in sweeping Super Tuesday victories.

Bmore on January 18, 2012 at 5:11 PM
I’ve been told for weeks that Perry is “irrelevent”, well, then what does it matter what he chooses to do? If he’s so low in the polls, who cares if he stays in or not? No one’s telling Roemer to get out.
And, if Newt can’t win without Perry helping him, then he is not a worthy candidate. Newt should be able to win no matter who’s in the race. In fact, Newt WAS winning is WITH Perry IN! Back in December he was polling at 40% and that was with Perry, Bachmann, Huntsman, Sasntorum, AND Mitt. Newt should be able to win without people doing him favors. That goes for all the candidates.
I have no “second choice”. Everyone else SUCKS. Perry is the last Tea Party, small-government candidate left.
Aslans Girl on January 18, 2012 at 5:11 PM
I hope Perry stays in for the long haul. I don’t think it’s a given that his supporters go to Newt. I’d go to Romney before Newt or Santorum.

I’m more of a Sooners fan. That being said, that is not the way to win the argument.
The key is to turn the legislature as WH really does not have the power and if a Republican is elected of course the Dems will cry about the obtrusive power grab the president is taking. That being said, we the people want our rights intact. We need to take over the legislative body, as we can always drive a moderate Republican to the right much easier than we can move a left wing loon to the center, let alone to the right.

All this simply because St. Sarah said that even though she was NOT endorsing anyone, that she would vote for Newt in order to draw the primary out. That’s her reason for it and I don’t disagree. That’s good for Perry — whom she praised last night, too! — NO ONE should drop out after two non-representative states have voted.
Mitt will kill Newt, Newt will go down swinging and take Mitt down a few notches, and it could all help the other two Not-Romneys: Perry and Santorum. Santorum will go down because he has no orgnization and up til last week, no $$.
