Quotes of the day

“The questions keep coming. ‘And who was in charge of the body that writes the budget the last time we had a balanced budget in this country?’ ‘Newt!’ ‘Who reformed welfare?’ ‘Newt!’ ‘Who brought the Clinton administration to heel?’ ‘Newt!’ ‘Who do we need in Washington?’ ‘Newt!’ ‘Who do we need making our case on that stage in a debate against President Obama in October and November?’ ‘Newt!’ ‘Who did you see last night was the only guy on the stage that was going to be able to go toe to toe with Chicago politics?’ ‘Newt!’ ‘And who’s the Pee Dee and South Carolina going to vote for come Saturday?’ ‘Newt!’
“Gingrich’s stellar debate performance Monday night in Myrtle Beach seems to have reinvigorated him. He reviews for the crowd his response in the debate to Juan Williams’s question on race and poverty, when Gingrich said that “every American of every background has been endowed by their creator with the right to pursue happiness. And if that makes liberals unhappy, I’m going to continue to find ways to help poor.’
“‘All of the sudden, the audience, spontaneously, started standing and applauding,’ Gingrich reminds today’s crowd. ‘The reason I think they were doing it is we have been fed so much baloney by our liberal elites and we are so sick of people who don’t get it that I think people are just grateful to have somebody who has the courage to tell the truth.’”
“There were signs across the state that voters were giving Mr. Gingrich a second look. The Romney campaign had negative advertisements against Mr. Gingrich at the ready, aides said, and scheduled a call with reporters on Wednesday to discuss Mr. Gingrich’s record ‘as an unreliable leader.’…
“[Santorum] referred to himself as a bold and consistent candidate to draw a contrast with Mr. Gingrich, his chief rival, whom he referred to as ‘bold, but all over the place.’
“‘This is one of the concerns that people have about Newt,’ said Mr. Santorum, who served with Mr. Gingrich in Congress. ‘He has this disconnection with reality that is very disconcerting for someone who wants to lead our country.’”
“What you really have, then, is something like this: about 25 percent of Republican voters are in Mr. Romney’s base (incidentally, about 22 percent of Republicans nationwide voted for Mr. Romney in their party’s primaries in 2008). And about 30 percent of the Republican primary electorate is truly opposed to him…
“That leaves a swing group of about 45 percent of the vote. These voters can certainly imagine candidates that they’d prefer to Mr. Romney — but they also consider him an acceptable choice, more or less.
“What seems to have become clear is that the hypothetical candidate these voters might have preferred to Mr. Romney has not materialized.”
“‘If I had to vote in South Carolina, in order to keep this thing going, I would vote for Newt and I would want this to continue – more debates, more vetting of candidates, because we know the mistake made in our country four years ago was having a candidate who was not vetted to the degree he should have been,’ she told Hannity from her home in Alaska…
“‘I want to see this [race] continue because iron sharpens iron, steel sharpens steel,’ she said.”

Of course it does. Most of the “old-timers” on Hot Gas received their posting tips and methods from some “effin’, freakin’” woman in Texas.

Very well put.
Sarah Palin’s influence has waned tremendously. She has a role to play in attacking Obama and helping get out the vote, but I do NOT want her front and center. She should be kept at arm’s length.
Sarah Palin is more trouble than she is worth. I think she’s more interested in her own brand than she is in defeating Obama.

Okay. So far, we heard that a vile and disgusting poster, who has been banned until multiple names, shouldn’t be reported as having sneaked back in during Open Registration even though Ed said that that would not be tolerated. We’ve also heard on this thread that Conservatives should just sit down and shut up, if they have questions about “The Legacy’s” fitness for the presidency.
Am I at HuffPo by mistake? I knew I shouldn’t have taken that left turn at Albuquerque.

ddrintn on January 18, 2012 at 7:59 AM
I could not agree more. We have already had more republican debates than can serve any purpose, other than to cause further damage to the candidates and the party.
Instead of debates, the media should have each candidate on for a full show, INDIVIDUALLY, to clarify their positions, and speak on their vision for their positions and policies, in something more substaintial that a one minute soundbite or a half-minute rebuttal, of some viscious attack from his competition or a hostile moderator.
jibjab75 on January 18, 2012 at 8:00 AM
Generates ratings…And that’s what Clearchannel/Fox is all about.
That’s another reason RomneyBain won’t be able to beat Obama in this election.
Romney makes it appears as if the whole thing is rigged to allow Wall ST to buy the White House.
We all know the liberal media is in the tank for Obama but the fact that Bain Capital/Clearchannel owns talk radio and has ties to Fox News is a club the liberals will use to beatdown and discredit conservative media and the GOP.

The Palin Newt hat tip is also a deserved stick-in-the-eye to Nikki Haley. Palin messing w Haley’s choice makes SC primary suddenly fun :)

I don’t think people are wanting to deny Sarah Palin the right to endorse whomever she wants. I think people are saying that her endorsement isn’t worth a hill of beans, and she shouldn’t be taken that seriously or given that much attention. I think a close association with Sarah Palin is going to hurt a candidate more than it helps them.

I totally agree. And Palin’s endorsement of Gingrich and the way she did it doesn’t help her. First, she sent her husband out to endorse Gingrich. As I said at the time, Todd’s endorsement was really her endorsement. She just wasn’t being forthright. When Todd’s endorsement had no impact Palin comes out in favor of Gingrich – purportedly in South Carolina only because, in her mind, steel strengthens steel. So she’s not able to distinguish between acid and steel.
Even if Gingrich were to win in South Carolina he doesn’t have the character or organization to do anything but prolong this stupid nastiness where you have Republicans, of all people, attacking capitalism. As for Santorum he barely has enough money for bus fare to Florida and Perry can’t find Florida, or certain body parts, without a map.
Sarah Palin built her reputation as a straight shooter. With her mealy mouthed endorsement of Gingrich she has likely damaged that reputation. With her stated desire to see the circular firing squad hard at work (because she believes it will help socialist mortgage supporter Freddie Mac Gingrich) surely she has damaged her faltering image as a common sense Republican.
Basilsbest on January 18, 2012 at 8:21 AM

If Morning Joe is any indication of what the MSM is thinking today, the MSM has a fevah and the only cure is Mitt Romney income tax returns and more Mitt soundbites on his recent income-earning and taxpaying history.
This is a slow-motion trainwreck in this climate.
Are Mitt defenders really going to argue that Mitt said something smart when he said he made “only” a couple hundred thousand dollars from speeches? Good lord, is he tone deaf or what? There’s a stat running around that Romney in recent years has averaged about $41,000 per speaking engagement, which is $8K more than the average level of compensation for an SC resident. To be sure, I want some confirmation of that figure–and I want it specifically confirmed that fundraising from campaign speaking engagements is being segregaged from fees for speaking engagements that’ll show up on his income tax returns.
Electable? Please explain why this is.

USAToday: George Romney released his Tax returns going back 12 years when he ran for the nomination back in 1968. Called “unprecedented transparency” at the time.
So question if George Romney (Mitt’s dad) released a 12 year tax return when he sought the nomination in 1968, why doesn’t Mitt follow his dad footsteps and releases his? Go Mittbots…

I’ll have you all that know that, when she was selected to be McCain’s running mate in 2008, I believed in her all the way. I was cheering her on as she gave that convention speech. It was a magical moment. Slowly, though, little by little, the woman has gotten on my nerves. All the cutesy teasing just went on MUCH too long. There is no requirement for the release of this information…and it is more common for candidates to do so once they have secured the nomination. Why on earth should he release it early for his enemies to try and find a way to distort it and use it against him?
The dems, the MSM, and his opponents are desperately looking for ANYTHING they can find to destroy him…and I can understand that as an intelligent politician, he does not wish to give them ANY more to work with than the law requires.
In all the criticism of Romney, there has never been a single hint of him doing anything either illegal or unethical. One would think that his absolutely spotless public and privatie life would be appreciated and applauded, even by those who support other candidates, especially in this era of countless corrupt and morally bankrupt politicians.

Ideas don’t fuel campaigns, money does. When Romney wins the first 4 primaries, no person in their right mind will donate to Gingrich, Perry, or Santorum. It’s clear to big money donors that the Romney campaign is ten steps ahead of the rest of them.

She doesn’t like it that our candidate has been picked for us before the primary season even started. Mitt lost the last time to the guy who lost to Obama. How is he so electable? We want someone who is willing to go into the general and at least put up some kind of fight.
Kissmygrits on January 18, 2012 at 9:04 AM
The only reason we are discussing it is because Newt (et al} in a desperate attempt to stop Mitt’s momentum, has raised the issue in order to throw up a false flag for people to speculate on, since he can’t find ANYTHING else to gain traction with…and the Dems and MSM are quick to take this bait and run with it. Newt tried using OWS tatics to attack Bain…and vit backfired, so this is his next desperate tactic. If you can’t see this, you are wilfully blind.

bluegill on January 18, 2012 at 9:14 AM
This smokescreen will fail to achieve its obvective, just like the Bain attacks failed. Romney is the only candidate in the race that can get the nomination. He has the money, the organization, the endorsements, etc. He can bring in the independents, the right, and the moderates.
He is an honorable man who is capable of fixing whats wrong with the country, and is motivated to do so, out of love of country. He will serve for 1 dollar, and will be a great president, and all of you who are down on him now, will have to admit how wrong you were, and will, in retospect, thank God we had a man step up that was equal to the task of turning this country around at a moment in time it was headed for ruin.

workingclass artist on January 18, 2012 at 9:25 AM
The reason for the 3-4 months is that Obama then gets back in full swing in APR-MAY… that is when people start to really look at the race. I don’t see a major uptick in the economy between now and then, and the shrinking of the employed workforce will mean that ‘good news’ for unemployment will mean far more people without jobs than in 2008.
If the electorate is sick of the R’s by MAY then they get the renewed experience of Obama in full blown on-the-air platitudes about how doing worse is doing better. Getting him air time THEN means there is a sudden noxious odor that reminds people that no matter how bad the R’s are, they at least are trying to grapple with something closer to reality than Obama is. Then no matter how much Obama goes into a full court press up to his D coronation, in that huge venue he is getting, the people will see him for what he is up-close and personal via his apparatchiks.
Plus, if there is really bad trouble from the EU, China or other venues the R’s will get LOTS of airtime to point out how bad Obama is doing… a presumptive nominee can’t buy that time, can’t get that time and Obama will have his own time to flounder trying to show he knows what he is doing and his R critics pointing out that he doesn’t. And if it hits during or just after MAY you want to be off the airwaves so the renewed, ineffectual and destructive concepts of Obama get full play because by then the R’s will have more or less settled on someone… choose well because whoever the nominee is WILL have to deal with this and possibly one or more other major items in the economy and foreign policy. The start up of a World War to liquify debt isn’t out of the question, either. Suck up the air time NOW and then the R candidate will seem FRESH after the summer. Obama will cause his own drumbeat of despair for himself and amplify that when he gets much more airtime…close the deal early and he has a chance to go through the cycle of fresh to stale to fresh again… take up more time and he goes from fresh to stale.
Yeah, I get that having him sound worse and worse may seem like a good idea, but there are cycles to badness and you don’t want him on an upcycle come election, but a down cycle. World events are out of his hands and they will start to dictate that cyclicity more than anything else… but when and how he gets a lot of space to get ‘analyzed’ and his face on the screen alone? The R candidates have that in their hands. Use it wisely. Money won’t matter, themes and perceptions will by then.
ajacksonian on January 18, 2012 at 9:26 AM
Glad to see you have seen the light. Glad I could help you out of your misconceptions. ;)
jibjab75 on January 18, 2012 at 9:27 AM
I want to see how all the candidates handle themselves in a face-off ~ prove to me that they can deliver the KO punch, because they’ll need it to fight the lawless Dems. A docile, low-key, one man/one moderator event wouldn’t have shown that.
I want to see my champion actually engaging in the fight ~ he has to do more than just tell me how sharp his sword is.
TheClearRiver on January 18, 2012 at 9:28 AM
I am one of the newbies, but have not commented. I did not want to be included with the new group of commenters that in my opinion, have taken this site to a low. I have even stopped reading the comments on most blogs. But when I do, I realize why we end up with Romney’s and McCain’s and other losers. We have as many idiots on our side as the dems do. Reading the comments of the newbies have taken what little enthusiasm I had out of this election. It is tragic that some of these folks actually call themselves conservatives, trying to change the definition of conservatism along with it. We have the perfect opportunity to elect a conservative, but you people get so wrapped up in the voices and looks and things that have no bearing whatsoever to electing someone conservative to the highest office in the land. Sometimes I feel like I’m watching a reality tv show and not a primary of one of the most important elections in history. I have no choice in this race as of yet, except not Romney.
razorbackchick on January 18, 2012 at 9:28 AM
Thank you for sending me that link which shows that Romney continues to poll better than all the other Republicans against Obama.
I’m glad you are finally incorporating actual facts into your world view. I guess you prove that not all Palinistas are clueless.
bluegill on January 18, 2012 at 9:28 AM
If wishing that someone with a record of governing like this was in the race makes me a “Palinista”, thank you, I’ll wear the title proudly.
And for gawd sakes, wash your chin will ya? That crust is starting to turn brown.
Flora Duh on January 18, 2012 at 9:30 AM
Palinista Flora Duh is comparing Sarah Palin’s time in the PTA and Obama’s work as a community organizer to Mitt Romney’s experience as CEO saving and making a huge success out of the SLC Olympics after the bribery scandal?
I find that rather pathetic, even for someone named Ms. Duh.
bluegill on January 18, 2012 at 9:19 AM
I’ll you what bluegill, I’ll put Palin negotiating the largest private sector deal in US history with the TransCanada deal up against Mitt’s SLC Olympics. I’ll also put any aspect of Palin’s resume and record in office against Mitt’s.
I am so confident about this that I issue you this challenge. Put any accomplishment, record, part of Mitt’s time in the private and public sector and I will raise you Palin’s.

If you lose interest in voting because of a few comments you read on some internet blog, then I think you might have other problems besides watching your preferred candidate (let me guess, it’s Perry) flounder and go down in flames.
In any event, welcome to the comment section!
bluegill on January 18, 2012 at 9:32 AM
And he’s the only candidate who won’t call Obama what he is … a leftist radical. It’s McCain all over again. Instead of going after Obama where it’ll hurt him, he’s going to play nice. Instead of putting Obama on the defensive, he’ll let the media cover for Obama’s record and spin the hell out of it.
Obama must be put on the defensive about who and what he is. His radical appointments, his associations with radicals from the Islamists to the environmentalists. Make him respond. Unfortunately Romney won’t do that and you can bet Obama will take full advantage of Romeny’s reluctance.

You know I was being sarcastic right? Are people so slow on this thread? Does every sarcastic comment has to be accompanied by a sarc tag?
Ah what the hell you’re a lost cause.
HerneTheHunter on January 18, 2012 at 9:34 AM
I was watching Animal Planet this am- and could help but LOL at the Cheeta feasting on the gazelle on the plain. Red meat everywhere ! What a timely coincidence ! The state of the “conservative” movement devouring itself ! I love Sarah and respect her alot- but to pro-long this cage match only benefits the product of Marxist mentors who is occupying the WH. Eat the rich indeed.

TheClearRiver on January 18, 2012 at 9:37 AM
Fight for who and what you believe in but remember, at the end of the day it has to be anyone but Obama.
Also remember keeping a majority in the House and taking the Senate is equally, if not more important than which Republican wins the White House.
darwin on January 18, 2012 at 9:37 AM
Mitt completed his full term as governor. Your turn.
bluegill on January 18, 2012 at 9:37 AM
Boy, you don’t seem to think endorsements are worthless when they are for your guy. The Romneybots are all over this site touting the latest Mitt endorsement. Now, if your implying that Palin’s endorsement isn’t worth a “hill of beans,” then you are plain being intellectually dishonest. She is the former republican VP nominee, former governor of Alaska, and a well-respected spokesperson for the tea party movement. Enough said.

KickandSwimMom on January 18, 2012 at 9:38 AM
Oh, and another thing, in a recent poll of which endorsements are the most sought after for republicans, the two that polled highest were: George W. Bush and Sarah Palin.

See what I mean! Perry is NOT my preferred choice. If you had read what I said, you would have seen I have no choice. The conservatives I like did not get in the race. But I see now why Romney is your choice. You can keep pushing your Romney crap, but will make no difference, if I wanted to vote for a liberal, I would just vote for Obama. And as far as Perry is concerned, I would take him in a heartbeat over Mittens.

HerneTheHunter on January 18, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Sarah’s NOT going to ‘shut-up.’
Journalism is NOT going to stop broadcasting stories about “what Sarah said THIS time . . . .”
You three are NOT going to stop criticizing Sarah for “being an irrelevant ‘has been’, who’s too dumb and/or greedy to recognize her time is LONG past, but continues to ‘open her irrelevant mouth anyway,’ doing significant damage to the Republican Party, from which we probably won’t recover, thereby ensuring Obama’s reelection.”
And all I can do is say: “I disagree.”

I’m shocked, shocked, I tell you, to hear you are a Perry supporter. Look, I won’t forget the /sarc tag —> /sarc

A. She did it by raising taxes
B. Comparing MA to AK is like comparing a Wall Street CEO to a welfare recipient (respectively)
