NRCC hits Obama on Keystone with “Lean Backwards”

posted at 12:10 pm on January 17, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The NRCC tries its hand at satire today as a weapon against Barack Obama, and it works — if you watch MSNBC enough to know its promotions for the cable channel’s slogan, “Lean Forward.” This is a takeoff of a Rachel Maddow spot for big government, shot at the Hoover Dam, in which Maddow argues that big projects like the Hoover Dam can only go forward on a national scale. For obvious reasons, Maddow wouldn’t make that argument in front of the Big Dig in Boston and the California high-speed rail project, since big government produced big overruns on projects that won’t ever recover their costs in value … but I digress.

The NRCC uses this as a platform to point out that we have a big project on the drawing board now, ready to go, with bipartisan consensus to proceed and the potential to deliver energy resources to a thirsty US. It may take a nation to get these projects accomplished, but it only takes one man to obstruct it — and that man is Barack Obama:

For those who don’t watch MSNBC on a regular basis, here’s the spot the NRCC is spoofing:

I’d call that a direct hit.

I also believe Obama will “approve” this with some”restrictions” and more environmental impact requirements. It will be delayed just enough to pass the election date at which time it will be deemed a hazard to the environment.

ALL your linking to fake poll results are not convincing anyone Romney is in the lead
Keep in mind Santorum had 8 percent in Iowa accordiing to your fake polls you pushed,

I just took part in a real poll in Florida, Romney gets his 21 percent , that is all

That was before last night SC debate where Romney was completely and utterly destroyed

Newt won with a spectacular performance, and no amount of spin is going to change that fact

When gas soars back above $4 very soon on it’s way to $5, the GOP needs to bash Obama’s head in it over this, the gulf, ANWAR, and every other source of oil he has OBSTRUCTED over the past 3 years.

The price of fuel needs to be linked to Obama.

wildcat72 on January 17, 2012 at 12:45 PM

For obvious reasons, Maddow wouldn’t make that argument in front of the Big Dig in Boston and the California high-speed rail project

Of course not! Nor would she point out something more relevant. But of course being an unattractive liberal on an third-rate cable station means that you don’t have to be all that good or fair a journalist. Newt had this right last night and point out how some of that stimulus money was to be spent:

‘The area that ought to be I-73, was called by Barack Obama “the corridor of shame” because of unemployment. Has it improved in three years? No. They haven’t built the road, they haven’t helped the people, they haven’t done anything.’

I think the President will say no to the Keystone pipeline. The environmental lobby, no matter how irrational its demands, is one of the blocs comprising his base that he absolutely must have to win, and they need to be mollified for the failure of cap-and-trade and other AGW-related initiatives. Besides, even with union jobs on the line, he knows he’ll always have the unions no matter what he does.

Some people, especially on the right–seem to be under the impression that President Obama actually has to achieve something during his term: create jobs, make the country more energy independent, spur economic growth, things like that. It isn’t true. He and his allies in the media need only to create perceptions and manipulate opinion. In the end, real-world results don’t matter. Why? Because propaganda works.

As I understand it, every 5-year Plan undertaken by the Soviet Union was a resounding success.

That is why we need Boehner and McConnell to step down from their posts before the next Congress under threat of having their seats PRIMARIED out from under them.

A leader would counter this argument with, “you told us this 10 years ago, if we’d gotten our way we wouldn’t be in this mess”, and “think of how WORSE it will be in 10 years if we don’t act now”.

Unless he has a friend with a direct investment in it (eg. Solyndra), he’ll kibosh it because there’s no personal interest.

If it can’t be used as a direct DNC money laundering scheme he won’t support it. The potential amount taken by increased union political contributions by unionized operating engineers, laborers, and petroleum workers will be minuscule.

I’m not so sure. Regardless of how much noise and msm propaganda thats spewed, they still only make up a very small number of people.
Obama could very easily let the pipeline go thru…timed just right..and still, for all practical purposes, kill it later via environmental regulation that already exists.

He could just shrug his shoulders..”I tried..can’t blame me..I’ll look into it…have a government agency created to “study” what restrictions might be lifted”.

I don’t think a more accurate description exists.

wildcat72 on January 17, 2012 at 1:04 PM

It’s hilariously ironic that the “national project” Maddow touts as such a shining example of the benefits of Big Government (the Hoover Dam), could not be built today. Strict environmental regulations and the fanatics that authored them – people like… well, people like Maddow – the very same leftists that Obama is so beholden to – would never permit it to happen. Some obscure specie of sand worm or tree frog would be used to kill or disable the project in the courts.

Did I say ironic? I meant hypocritical.

On the pipeline, I really have to wonder about Obama’s thinking on this. Greens aren’t a huge part of his base. And gas is at $3.35-3.40 here in DC which means it will be well over $4.00 this summer. Does he not see what $4 gas will do to his election campaign in the summer and the fall?

I don’t get the thinking sometimes, half of what the guy does just defies logic.

for the love of GOD, I wish conservatives would STOP accepting the premises liberals put forth. It doesn’t take a Nation to build a damn. It takes people. Smart people.

The reason the Hoover damn is a national project – not a state or town project – is because the electricity produced by it is used in multiple states.

Rachel Dip-Stick is arguing for more centralized BIG government. What she’s saying is only Big Gub’ment can tackle big challenges. And that’s flat-out wrong.

I had to watch the second one to understand it, but once I did that the first one was pretty funny.

Eren on January 17, 2012 at 1:18 PM

Believe you’ve misidentified the fellow in that second clip- that’s Ralph Macchio, the kid from Happy Days.

He sure is looking haggard these days.

GrassMudHorsey on January 17, 2012 at 1:19 PM

On the pipeline, I really have to wonder about Obama’s thinking on this. Greens aren’t a huge part of his base. And gas is at $3.35-3.40 here in DC which means it will be well over $4.00 this summer. Does he not see what $4 gas will do to his election campaign in the summer and the fall?

I don’t get the thinking sometimes, half of what the guy does just defies logic.

PetecminMd on January 17, 2012 at 1:08 PM

Here’s his thinking:

People in DC, NY, Boston, etc will vote for him if gas is $2 or $5 a gallon. His base of urbanites isn’t that impacted by high gas prices. They tend to drive small cars and drive less. Many don’t drive at all and take public transportation. So $4 or even $5 gas is almost a non issue for the typical Obama voter.

The people $4 gas kills is the rural voter who has to drive 10 miles to get to the nearest store in a 15 MPG truck or SUV. But so what? Chances are that voter is already voting against Obama already.

angryed on January 17, 2012 at 1:20 PM

Lol! Ridicule is a powerful political tool…especially when, you know…you aren’t funny (according to liberals, anyway).

Love the ad, Maddow’s a joke. I also love Rove’s Debbie Wasserman-Downer ad.

These liberals are clowns and there’s plenty of comedic material to mine.

This is exactly how SNL, the Daily Show and Colbert destroy conservatives…by making them the punchlines to jokes.

OxyCon on January 17, 2012 at 1:24 PM

You’d think that decades of abortion would eventually cause the liberal gene to become extinct… By the time liberal women decide to procreate, they are at the age where most of their eggs are dead or dying as well…

wildcat72 on January 17, 2012 at 1:07 PM

Yeah, but unfortunately liberals aren’t born, they’re made – fashioned by a public school system long ago hijacked for the purpose of indoctrination in leftist ideology. Until we provide an education for our young that allows for a alternate view and a focus on critical thinking, wave upon generational wave of new leftist recruits will rise to fight the same old fight every 20 years.

If that’s the case, he’s counting on his supporters being really dumb.

Those “nose in the air” urbanites ain’t growin’ their own food.

cozmo on January 17, 2012 at 1:25 PM

May I ask where are the union big wigs on this issue? They seem to be strangely quite as Obama stands in their way of getting jobs for their workers. I suppose that they have been bought off by Obama’s stacking the NLRB with pro-union people.

SC.Charlie on January 17, 2012 at 1:27 PM

I love it when the NRCC hijacks my browser.

And Fox news helps spread that meme by playing clips from snl, daily show, and colbert on a semi regular basis, while the hosts uncomfortably laugh.
I never got why Fox does that.

Mimzey on January 17, 2012 at 1:35 PM

Obama stickers on cars became very rare around here after 2009. These days I don’t spot them all that often.

wildcat72 on January 17, 2012 at 12:54 PM

I understand many were destroyed during the “Cash for Clunkers” roundup. Just speculating…

cigarcamel on January 17, 2012 at 1:39 PM

The ad would be more impressive if we could hear what she is saying.

Labamigo on January 17, 2012 at 1:46 PM

LeeSeneca didn’t add that comment to the wrong thread by mistake; he’s spamming all of the threads with the same comment. Unfortunately, LeeSeneca won’t be joining us again for, oh, ever.

Ed Morrissey on January 17, 2012 at 12:27 PM

Lee was around Hot Gas for awhile, right? As I recall he wasn’t one of the newbies from the recent Open Registrations.

Sounds like he’s just as “smart” as his hero Newt.

Del Dolemonte on January 17, 2012 at 1:49 PM

Another parody piece in the making. An Obama look-a-like at the damn reciting Reagan’s Berlin wall speech about tearing down the Berlin Wall…………..with a few words changed. I am sure some extreme environmentalists would like to see the dam removed.

SC.Charlie on January 17, 2012 at 1:52 PM

think The Won will approve it after a “convincing” delay and some stupid mean nothing regulations to calm the greenies. I don’t see how he can say no to this pipeline.

Cindy Munford on January 17, 2012 at 12:16 PM

Your comment seems to assume that Obama is either

Competent
Reasonable
Well advised
Rational
Well intentioned
Trying to lower US unemployment
Trying to make the US energy independent
Trying to reduce the trade deficit

I’m not sure any of these apply.

talkingpoints on January 17, 2012 at 1:55 PM

If Little Bammie gives in on Keystone, that doesn’t mean it gets built. That’s only his politicking. The progs have set up a system over the last forty years that doesn’t depend on the man in office. One person with a good bankroll and a lawyer can stop anything.

On top of that a friendly judge decides that the three-year environmental study should be done by someone in Prog-World, so they end up turning a profit on the court proceedings to be used the next time.

slickwillie2001 on January 17, 2012 at 2:00 PM

How about deceitful agenda driven ideologue?

Mimzey on January 17, 2012 at 2:01 PM

This RNCC ad is a project that needs to go national. It can’t just be done by one person, or a town,….

FerdtheMoonCat on January 17, 2012 at 2:04 PM

Damming that river, damming any river at one time was an environmental no-no…years ago the left fought hard against any of these projects, it “scarred” our sacred land.
Like global warming, they take whatever is at hand, and the left uses it to push their agenda…even when the agenda a few years ago voted against these projects.
One day they will embrace global weather change as their idea to create a better world, or claim they never really supported it.

right2bright on January 17, 2012 at 2:28 PM

Great spoof. I wonder what Rachel Maddow will have to say about it.

SC.Charlie on January 17, 2012 at 12:17 PM

She’ll ignore it!

Dr. Demento on January 17, 2012 at 2:32 PM

Okay, I’ll admit it–I watch “Hart of Dixie” for no reason other than that I think Rachel Bilson is a living doll. It’s hard for me to believe Rachel Bilson and Rachel Maddow are the same species, let alone the same gender.

radjah shelduck on January 17, 2012 at 2:39 PM

The RNC is so dense. This stuff is funny red meat. It won’t convince a single Obama voter or undecided voter to switch to Romney.

It’s like they’re not even trying anymore.

angryed on January 17, 2012 at 1:04 PM

i disagree, humor is effective. i remember Reagan saying something like, “recession is when your neighbor loses his job, depression is when you lose your job, and recovery is when Jimmuh Carter loses his job.”

humor wins without having to suffer the “mean spirited” tag.
