Electable candidate: I didn’t earn much in speaking fees, just a few hundred thousand
posted at 7:52 pm on January 17, 2012 by Allahpundit
He didn’t quantify the amount himself, but then he doesn’t have to. The DNC’s ad team will do it for him when they pluck this soundbite a few months from now.
“What’s the effective rate I’ve been paying? It’s probably closer to the 15 percent rate than anything,” Romney, a GOP presidential candidate, said. “My last 10 years, I’ve — my income comes overwhelmingly from investments made in the past rather than ordinary income or rather than earned annual income. I got a little bit of income from my book, but I gave that all away. And then I get speaker’s fees from time to time, but not very much.”…
Romney collected more than $360,000 in speaking fees from such companies as Barclay’s Bank and Goldentree Asset Management over a 12-month period ending last year, according to his financial disclosure filing.
Like Philip Klein and Ace, I don’t understand how he isn’t more attuned to his own rhetoric when talking about wealth. He knows the left is going to demagogue him for it; in virtually every other aspect of the campaign, he’s exhaustively prepared and disciplined. His critics were unfair in knocking him for saying he likes being able to fire people, but he has to realize that talking about “firing” anyone, in whatever context, is going to get their attention as part of an attack on Bain’s layoffs. Same here: Obviously he was speaking relatively when he said he doesn’t earn “much” from speaking fees, but even in that context, the takeaway is, “How much must this guy earn that $360,000 a year qualifies as ‘not very much’?” More from Klein:
Romney actually earned $374,327.62 from speaking fees in 2010 and early 2011, according to financial disclosure forms released earlier this year. That alone would put him among the top few percent of taxpayers. Of course, the point Romney was trying to make was a technical accounting one — relative to his investment income, the speaking fees aren’t very big, which drives down his effective tax rate. I get it. But statements like this are just gold to President Obama, who hopes to make Romney a poster child for his class warfare reelection strategy. A comment like this, in the middle of January, isn’t likely to be on voters’ minds in November. But if Romney continues his pattern of making such statements, it will become a huge problem should he be the nominee.
If he’s trying to tamp down curiosity about his tax returns, he has a funny way of doing it. Even so, I do sympathize with him for having to walk a fine line rhetorically to avoid moronic-yet-effective lines of attack like this. For instance, I’m tempted to say that he should treat any amount of money, no matter how small, as “a lot” while on the trail since that’ll signal to voters that he’s in touch with blue-collar workers and that he’s likely to cut spending if elected. But that wouldn’t work, would it? Imagine him walking out of Starbucks with coffee and a reporter asks how much he paid and he replies, “Five bucks. A lot!” That would be true — it is a lot for coffee — but it would also sound bizarre and phony coming from a guy worth $250 million. The only way out, I think, is to studiously refuse to characterize any amount of money as large or small unless he’s talking about the federal budget. If he does that and treads lightly on rhetoric about laying people off, he won’t do much damage to himself.
The things we have to worry about in the era of omnipresent media. Here’s Pelosi insisting that the conservative base doesn’t really believe that Romney can beat Obama. Is she right?

Newt should have an add up attacking Romney for being “rich” and “wearing a suit” and “firing granny to make millions” sometime tomorrow.

He pays tax at 50%. The same dollar of profit is first taxed at 35% in the hands of the corporation that earned it and then at 15% in the hands of the shareholder.

I don’t fault Mitt, Newt or anyone else for getting rich in the free market. I hope everyone does well financially. It’s no big news that presidential candidates have a few bucks.
Bill Clinton earned about $75M to $80M in speaking fees during the first decade of this millenium. Mitt’s few hundred grand is chump change compared to Bubba’s take.

The one thing I’ve learned from the Bain Capital saga is that dividends does not come from profits. A company can be losing money hand over fist and still issue dividends. How? Just take on more debt.
ZGMF_Freedom on January 17, 2012 at 9:48 PM
Again, people here aren’t busting on Romney for being rich. They’re airing their concerns about how he words certain thing in a way that is going to get him his butt handed to him in November.
Clinton has managed to get rich without seeming rich to your average Joe. Romney, not so much.

I’d say Mitt is more like Obama stylistically (not to mention actual record of governance). Romney supporters use him as a blank slate upon which they can wishcast their own policy preferences. They pick and choose what they like from what he says and completely discard anything that he says that contradicts their preferences. And completely ignore his actual history of deeds, as if it never happened.

Re-read his statement again. The “but not very much” refers to the time element of the speaking fees, not the fees themselves. He may have only given a few speeches, that’s what he was referring to.
Romney Deniers of course will jump on this – sad that his fellow GOPers can’t give him the benefit of the doubt. All I can say, I have never seen so many conservatives act like whiney liberals in my lifetime. Embarrassing indeed, especially Gingrich and Perry whom I used to admire. Shame, shame, shame
BabysCatz on January 17, 2012 at 11:10 PM
Basically Romney supporters are saying: “stop making fun of Romney because he is rich” and “You hate capitalism if you make fun of Romney”.
I don’t make fun of Romney because he is rich, I make fun of him because he reminds me of “Legacy Rich Guy” and not “Businessman Rich Guy”. It is not fair, Romney has made some of his money on his own, I get that, but he did come from a rich politically connected family. I think he has one problem that is the same that Obama has, that John Kerry had, etc. in that he can’t connect with middle class folks. He just can’t stop reinforcing the image that he has nothing in common with them. The greatness of Reagan and deviousness of Clinton was they both could stroll into the average middle class family and could connect with them on a personal level. It is not fair, we should not be picking presidents on that, but it is a reality.
Thankfully Romney will be going up against Obama who already has lost that group because well he keeps golfing at country clubs, holding stupid Halloween parties and would not be caught dead in a Walmart. So as long as Romney don’t start lighting cigars with 100 dollar bills, talk about his last polo match, or some other bizarre act he should be ok, because he is much better than Obama, that is not saying much, but better..

While Mitt Romney condemns polygamy and its prior practice by his church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Republican presidential candidate’s great-grandfather had five wives and at least one of his great-great-grandfathers had 12.
…
Romney’s great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, married his fifth wife in 1897. That was more than six years after LDS church leaders banned polygamy and more than three decades after a federal law barred the practice.
…
Romney has joked about polygamy, saying in various settings that to him, “marriage is between a man and a woman … and a woman and a woman.” But in serious moments he has called the practice “bizarre” and noted his church excommunicates those who engage in it.
Then was his Great Grandfather excommunicated? Most Mormons consider those that went to Mexico apostates as well.
No wonder the MSM wants Mitt to win.
Mormon is bad enough but a Morman Polygamist. The fun the MSM will have with that. Bet this is really why Nancy is so confident.
Steveangell on January 17, 2012 at 11:41 PM
Also one other thing…
It amazes me that Romney supporters, and the GOP elite who are backing him, make fun of the Tea Party for ideological purity and not picking electable candidates, because they might scare independent and moderate voters. Yet when it comes to wall street, investment bankers, venture capitalist, etc., etc., they go into Adam Smith jihad mode and demand all those who attack Romney as heretics of capitalism.
The irony is Wall Street is not well liked right now in middle class homes. It is not because they hate capitalism, but because many in the middle class are angry at Wall Street because of a perception (both real and imagined) that government protects those who are politically connected and are wealthy from financial failure. Romney has to prove that he is not going to be another Bush, or Obama, and that he is not going to bail out certain wall street firms when they screw-up. If he does not assure them of this, that he is not “Wall Street’s Man” he will appear just as scary to those very same voters.
Romney has to articulate the difference between Crony Protectionist Capitalism of the Bush era that ended up getting a straight out socialist elected into office in Obama, and the free market capitalism in which the same rules are applied to everyone, which is if you fail, make stupid investments, run up massive debts, take on loans you cannot repay, government will not be there to save you….Wall Street or Main Street. I don’t think the GOP elite understand just how much Bush hurt the image of the GOP on this, and why it is critical to fix that image….and I mean now. They have to understand that Bush was a massive failure and distance themselves form him and his policies. I was against Romney, because I don’t think he knows how to articulate that, or escape that image. Now that it appears he is going to win the nomination I can only hope that someone knocks some sense into him on this issue.

Seems to me that the small handful of Romney bashers have been wrong over and over, yet they continue to underestimate Mitt Romney.
Go ahead and attack his religion. Go ahead and bring up polygamy. People will see right through that. Just like the Bain stuff, Romney will end up looking better than ever.
Let’s see, we have two versions:
1) excellent businessman, turnaround guy who was successful governor, not given to ideological extremes, practical, unimpeachable character in private life.
2) “Cult” member, greedy rich man who only cares about his rich buddies and corporations.
I think the first version is the one that is already becoming the public perception of Mitt Romney, and is the one that will stick throughout the campaign, which will be almost entirely about Obama’s failed economy. Romney is perfectly positioned to win, and he will win. Just you watch!

I’m loving the constant barrage of “Romney said x but it can be construed to mean y when taken out of context” posts and articles. Whatever happened to simply discussing the issues? If the American electorate can be swayed by out of context quotes, then we deserve another 4 years of Obama.
Kriggly on January 18, 2012 at 3:01 AM
There are so many bigoted and ignorant facets to your post. However, to just outline a few: Many of the “Fathers” of Christianity and Judaism were polygamists if one consults the Tanakh, Mormonism simply adds another layer of unbelievability to a religion that believes in a miracle making Jewish zombie (believing in one but having no openness to the possibility of the other is a bit silly), Romney is clearly a monogamist (and I’m sure to fundamentalist social conservative’s chagrin, he has a highly stable and successful family despite his Mormon curse), and one’s religion is pretty irrelevant to their platform. Pelosi doesn’t even receive support for her own church, so I’m not sure why her opinion would be relevant to people who would actually vote for a Republican in the first place.

It is interesting that everyone glosses over that line above but focuses on the latter.
Some need to recall that Romney as both Olympics leader and MA Gov took an income of ONE DOLLAR. He truly is in the public eye to serve BUT posters here that are supposedly conservative want to jump on Romney for his income or revenue that he brings in.
What happened to the idea of working towards a bigger party that was inclusive? We have seemed to take a sharp ideological turn with the advent and eventual takeover of the Tea Party. I am a member of the TP and ITS ORIGINAL INTENT was to get gov’t to stop its profligate spending! The TP has now taken over ALL aspects of the conservative movement and wants to CROWN who it thinks is conservative AND BELONGS IN THE PARTY and who should be voted off the proverbial conservative island!
We continue like this and conservatives will NOT regain power for decades again! The TP ONLY represents about 15-20% of the 40% that call themselves and VOTE conservative. The other portion of the population is split between 20% independent and 35-40% liberal. IT is that 20% of the Indies which generally swing conservative that we will LOSE for awhile if the party continues this pattern.

this should be the ultimate proof we don’t need such a Deer-In-The-Headlights candidate.
GINGRICH is the strongest candidate:

Five Ways Conservatives Will Have to Sell Their Souls if Romney Wins
“If you were trying to come up with the most atrocious candidate imaginable to go toe-to-toe with Barack Obama in 2012, you couldn’t do much better than Mitt Romney. He was an unpopular moderate governor who lost 2 out of the 3 major elections he’s run in and whose signature issue Romneycare is an enormous failure. Moreover, he’s so uninspiring that he makes Bob Dole look like Ronald Reagan and that’s before you consider his incessant flip-flopping that makes it impossible to really know where he stands on any issue.
Romney’s candidacy also runs counter to almost every political trend in the book right now. He’s the antithesis of everything the Tea Party stands for — a moderate establishment-endorsed, principle-free Rockefeller Republican. On the other hand, he’s like a bad guy straight out of central casting for the Occupy Wall Street crowd, a conscience-free 1 percenter who makes $10,000 bets and lectures the public about how corporations are people — while hordes of poor and middle class Americans that he fired trail in his wake telling tales of woe about how Romney made their lives into a living hell.
At one time, I thought both Gingrich and Perry were more electable than Romney. I have, however, reassessed and now believe Gingrich, Perry, Santorum, and even Huntsman, who just left the race, are ALL more electable than Mitt. It’s also worth noting that all of those candidates, including Huntsman, are more conservative than Romney. It’s mind-boggling to consider the fact that if Romney wins, the conservative base will have chosen the guy behind Romneycare over the man behind the Contract with America, America’s premier social conservative, and the best job-creating governor in America, all of whom would also be more electable…”

I certainly do no begrudge anybody for money they earn, from whatever endeavor as long as it is legal. I think it is much more important what people say and do. On that latter score I have more than enough misgivings about Willard that make me conclude there is no way I can vote for him no matter who his opponent is. Having said that, I reject those on the right falling into the dem’s trap of promoting class warfare, there are more concrete reasons to attack Romney over. As far as class warfare and all the other crap the left cares about I have no doubt Romney is the dem’s opponent of choice…my doubts are with Romney, I do not believe he is the one to give them an adequate defense because in the end it is not about defense, it is about offense, and Romney does not have a killer instinct, so he’ll end up losing the battles and the war.

Hahaha, so would I!
Seriously, what is the big deal if Romney has loads of dough? If I could make hundreds of thousands by giving some speeches, you better believe I’d do it.
It’s not like Romney’s success is somehow holding anyone down. It’s really pathetic how people get so worked up and jealous over successful people.

“Jeffrey Zients will serve as President Obama’s new acting director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), but the president’s decision might undercut attacks on Republican Mitt Romney’s career as a venture capitalist, because Zients and Romney are both alumni of Bain & Company.
“I’m pleased to designate Jeff Zients to lead the Office of Management and Budget. Since day one, Jeff has demonstrated superb judgment and has provided sound advice on a whole host of issues,” Obama said in a statement accompanying the announcement today. Zients previously served as Deputy Director of OMB under Jack Lew, who became Obama’s chief of staff with the departure of Bill Daley.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney might also be pleased at Zients’ promotion, given that they have a common professional background; Zients worked with Bain & Company as early as 1988, according to the Bain website. Romney worked at Bain & Company, first from 1977-1984, and then again from 1991 and 1992, when he was the Bain & Company chief executive officer.
The Bain name has become politically-charged recently with the rise of Mitt Romney — not for his work as a Bain & Company executive, but rather his career at Bain Capital…”

I would like to officially protest your continued abuse of this forum. Is this really a place to copy and paste off-topic articles from other sites? I think what you are doing is borderline spam.
At least Aslan Girl (another notorious Perry worshiper who copies and pastes random links and text) limits the text she posts to a short paragraph or so.

When gazillionaire Ross Perot ran for POTUS (out of his insane hatred of the Bush family), Perot’s tax rate was 6%. Yes, really.
I don’t recall anyone making a big deal out of that.
The difference with Mittens is he’s trying to hide his wealth instead of embracing it and showing all Americans how they too can be successful.
(don’t forget to convert)

I think his actions can be explained as this……
He can see that his candidate has no chance and it’s clear to him that his opinions of how these primaries would play out have been figments of his imagination. So all that is left is to find every anti-Romney article he can in a vain attempt to convince himself, beyond the common sense God gave him, that he must have been right all along and it’s just going to take a little bit more time for it to come to fruition.
I’m not insulting him because I think it is a completely natural reaction to the events.
We on the other hand are doing the “Whoop, whoop, whoop” raise the roof dance because we are enjoying our successful assessment of how this primary season would play out. Also not an insult and is a completely natural reaction to the events.
csdeven on January 18, 2012 at 8:57 AM
Romney still needs to win the primary before he needs to worry about how envious and small-minded the electorate will be in the general. If Perry had said this, there would be no issue. It would be red meat to the people hungering for in-your-face Americanism. But because it is Romney everyone enters OWS mode.

I know Mitt’s rich, and I don’t care. I don’t need to see his tax returns(that’s not required) and don’t need to know exactly how much money he has. How much does Zero rake in for his speeches?
Kissmygrits on January 18, 2012 at 9:27 AM
Not sure what the tax rate is on “speaking fee’s”?
15%?
This…is why people are questions….right or wrong….but to be the POTUS…..FULL exposure needs to put things to bed.
I for one…hope that we are NOT talking about this in October….or the Liberals will be winning this argument…

The White Obama (mitt romney) is disgusting! Telling us in the Fox Debate the “we better pay our 35% taxes”, but he is only paying 15% in taxes! What an A**!!!
