Mitt Romney handing out cash on the rope line
posted at 12:30 pm on January 15, 2012 by Jazz Shaw
I can’t wait for this to blow up into some massive political theater. During a campaign stop in South Carolina, Mitt Romney was seen literally handing out cash to a voter. However, the truth of the story makes it seem a lot less sinister than it sounds on the surface.
Presidential candidates hear tales of woe all the time on the campaign trail. But rarely does one respond by pulling cash out of his back pocket to help a struggling voter pay her bills.
Mitt Romney did just that here Saturday night, according to ABC News. When a 55-year-old woman, Ruth Williams, who said she lost her job last October, approached the Republican presidential front-runner on the rope line following a campaign rally in Sumter, he gave her what an aide later said was about $50 or $60.
The woman claims she was driving her car and praying, wondering how she was going to pay her utility bill, when she saw Romney’s campaign bus and God told her to follow it. Arriving at the event, Romney decided to help her out and she’s been volunteering at Mitt’s campaign HQ since then.
I’ll leave it to the experienced legal eagles to sniff around and see if there’s any possible election law violation here, but I’d certainly hope not. It’s not as if you could demonstrate any sort of quid pro quo here, after all, though I’d be willing to bet that the woman is probably pretty well disposed to vote for Romney at this point. But what if Romney wasn’t trying to “buy” just one vote? Mediaite seems to hint at this.
Romney has been dogged on the campaign trail by claims by his opponents that his wealth makes him out-of-touch with ordinary Americans.
Was Romney aware that making such a generous, spontaneous gesture might be good PR for him? I don’t doubt it. But that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t sincere either. And by this time, I’d hope that he and his team are well enough versed in election law to shut something like that down if it actually ran afoul of the rules. Here’s the video, also courtesy of Mediaite, where the lady describes the situation herself, so you can decide.

you should be banned for being annoying
gerrym51 on January 15, 2012 at 8:17 PM
Fine, idiot. One final response to counter your fallacious words then back to ignore mode.
I (among others) want you to be banned because you turn everything into a gay issue & are so obsessed with it that you accuse people with whom you disagree of being gay. You called me gay several times for some reason. That’s why I think the ban hammer needs to be unfurled.
You weirdly claim I was the one obsessed with it when in reality, I don’t really care one bit what someone’s attraction is. You might look in the mirror when claiming we’re gay obsessed. For some reason that’s not an issue broached in a thread until your idiotic self shows up.
Also, male or female? Care to clarify so when the evidence is shown you can be shown to be a liar?
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 8:23 PM
Victory?
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 8:24 PM
Wait what?
Didn’t you read the article? The camera weren’t rolling.
Geez…
I mean, I’m fine with people opposing Romney. I’m not thrilled with him myself, although I don’t think it will be as bad as some people keep saying.
However, just because you disagree with someone politically does not suddenly mean that they are evil and that everything they do is motivated by their evil evilness.
I’m getting really sick of this.
I expect Democrats to talk that way, but Republicans used to be better then that.
All the evidence is that Romney is a good man who does care about the poor. It is entirely within his character to give his money to someone he thinks needs it more. Recognizing this does not mean I must like all his political positions .
Nor is there anything liberal about this. Giving other people’s money away is liberal. Giving your own money away is Christ-like.
They aren’t the same thing no matter how much liberals like to pretend it is.
What is this madness with conservatives making liberal arguments to attack Romney? Attack him for his laundry list of deviations from conservatism. Don’t make liberal arguments attacking Bain. And surely don’t attack Romney for giving his own money to the poor.

Hope your niners take down the giants. And even though the Ravens beat my Texans (who really beat themselves), hope they get the Patriots.
But back to the thread at hand, I have decided to avoid Dr. Tesla dominated discussions. His or her comments are all over the place. The only consistent is the mentions of the word gay.
jazzuscounty on January 15, 2012 at 8:58 PM
I hope dorks like you do ignore me. Again, I didn’t bring up gays on this thread. The social libs obssessed with gays brought up comments I made on a Santorum thread on which they brought up the gay issues. It’s your issue, I just talk about it when you social libs bring it up. It’s only fair. If don’t want to talk about gay issues, you need to stop bringing it up on Santorum threads. Good luck with that.
One thing I’ve noticed about the ROmney fans is they almost universially pro-gay marriage. Even though he isn’t, according to what he says now.

ZGMF_Freedom on January 15, 2012 at 9:12 PM
Stay classy.
Also, FYI I’m not pro gay marriage. I’m just not weirded out by gay people. It’s pretty much a non issue for me. Just because it’s not my ‘go-to’ issue doesn’t mean I’m gay or even pro gay marriage. I don’t see gays as the bogeyman hiding around every corner waiting with handcuffs & bedposts.
I just happen to think it’s a side issue brought up by liberals to keep our minds off the prize.

You think people have to say gay-centric things or they should be banned. You are the kind of guy that thinks you scoring points for the afterlife by being so in to the gays.
I can’t say, hey, I’d rather not room with a gay person in college without some loser social lib like you wigging out on me, trying to police my speech and get me banned.
You are the one obssesssed with gay issues if you can’t talk like an aduult about them.

So. Much. Logic. Fail.
What part of “You called me gay several times for no reason. That’s why I think the ban hammer needs to be unfurled.” do you not understand. It has nothing to do with you generally bringing up gay issues at every turn. I couldn’t care less what you think, but as soon as people shrug off your issues with gay people, & refuse to indulge your your strange 300 warrior fantasies, logic tells you that they must be gay themselves.
That’s why you’re an idiot. Among other reasons.

As I said before, I wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing a small dorm room with a female that I wasn’t dating. That doesn’t mean I hate females.
The thing is, when you talk gay issues with social libs and gays, they want to demonize you if you don’t parrot their position on the issue. I’m not out to get gay people, but at the same time, I don’t have to put them up on a pedastal as though they come first in all things. I treat them like I treat anybody else, and I have the right to disagree with gay people on things. They are not super citizens, and nobody is out to get them.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 9:35 PM
You are a smarm litttle guy. You called for me to be banned when I made my comment about not digging having a gay roommate in college. At that point, I logically concluded that you may be gay because you got so worked up over it that you wanted me banned. You do care what I think if you want me banned for fricking comment that does fit your template what is acceptalbe to say regarding gay folk. You treat gay peoplke like they children or victims, I don’t.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 9:38 PM
Mattshu,
You are a control freak and you need to understand that nobody likes a control freak. WHen some little punk tries to get me banned on the internert because he can’t handle a harmless opinion, that’s a problem for me. You wanted my attention, brother, and I dropped the hanmmer on you. I nailed you to the wall on it. Nobody has to say what you want to hear on any given subject.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 9:42 PM
Wrong, idiot. It wasn’t until after you repeatedly called me gay & effeminate for not agreeing with your anti gay obsession that I said you should be banned. Someone else may have, but I didn’t until you weirdly got all personal with it.
The gay issue was already in full force in this thread when I showed up. As far as I can tell, it was you that brought it up. Since then, others have shown where you showed that obsession in other threads.
Revise as you like. Are you married to a female (suspended) presidential candidate, by the way. You seem a little obsessed.
Also, I reiterate, male or female? You’ve claimed both at times on HA. Which is true & which is a lie, troll.
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 9:46 PM

“This Tesla person needs a second look.

Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 6:43 PM”
The first of many times you accused me of being gay which I don’t take personally, I just don’t think you add anything of use to the blog. Nothing to do with your preference of not rooming with a gay person. That’s your made up issue.
…in a thread concerning Romney handing out money to a woman at a campaign stop.
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 9:52 PM
mattshu,
You lie all the time. I think it was you that brought up my comment about my gay rooommate on a Santorum thread from a couple of days ago.
You called for me to be banned after I said gay men shouldn’t be allowed to live in male dorms at colleges. You wigged out, threw a temper tantrum over it.
I started claiming that you may be gay after you called for me to be banned b/c I don’t see how a heterosexual male could have gotten that worked up over it. I’m confident most people who go to college are hoping their roommate isn’t gay. I know I’m in the majority on that issue, even though I may be one of the few who is going to say so.
SOcial libs are always in our faces about gay marriage but if a conservative says one fricking thing about gay issues, he’s obsessed. It’s amazing how that works.
You can go watch Brokeback Mountain if i Hurt your feelings too much.

mattshu,
Do you think I haven’t talked about Romney on this thread?
You just whining I’ve criticized Romney and you a Romney SuperFan. You or one of your little moderatate gay centric types brought up the gay comment i made on another thread on this thread in some lame attempt to discredit me.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 9:55 PM
I never bring up gay issues on here. I just talk about when the gay centric moderate Republican voters bring them up. They want to bring the subject up but then shout you down if you talk to them about it.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 9:57 PM

Don’t know much about that in general, but regarding the specifics you are obsessed. Most people don’t bring it up in every thread like you seem to do.
Let your freak flag fly, weird dude/chick. Which is it by the way, you liar troll?
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 9:58 PM
mattshu,
Here’s an idea.
Why dont your start your own website, and then ban people on there for not saying things you want to hear regarding Romney, gays, etc.
The straights and the gays are never going to work out their issues if straights get shouted down when they have a legit point of view. There has to be some dialogue at some point.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 10:02 PM
Just. Stop. Digging.
Everything doesn’t revolve around your weird gay obsession.
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 10:04 PM
If you called for me to be banned I’d just laugh & shrug it off. You on the other hand, have gone crazy simply since I suggested that HotAir would be better off without your lovely commentary.
If you get banned you don’t get to collect a paycheck anymore do you?
Is that why you’re so pissed?
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 10:06 PM
Stop trying to control people. You are so uptight. I’m going to talk about gays as much as I please. There’s nothing wrong with it. You and your buddies like bringing it up on the Santorum threads, so it’s fair game. Like I said, I didn’t introduce the topic on this thread.
You need to learn how to deal with different opinions in a more mature manner.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 10:08 PM
Mattshu,
Why are you calling for peoiple to be banned if you aren’t a control freak?
You are gay, that’s why you got worked up about it, and you are upset that I know you are gay. You f—- hate my guts over that comment. It’s not logical.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 10:10 PM
What if I am wrong and you are not gay? I would just laugh that off, but you seem mighty upset that anybody would think you could be gay. There’s nothing wrong with it if you are.
I’m just trying to understand why somebody would wig out over my comment that I would have prefered not to have a gay roommmate in college and call for me to be banned for it. You sure took that personally.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 10:12 PM
Seriously, you’re back here again? facepalm.
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 10:14 PM
Why are you so defensive about it? Why wig out if some guy says he prefers not to room with gay people? What’s it to you? It’s really none of your business either way.
Why do think I have to be polite to you have you called for me to be banned? Why can’t I assume you are gay if you get all emotional about gay issues?
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 10:16 PM
You realize all you’re doing is adding legitimacy to my belief that you should be banned for spamming every thread you’re in.
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 10:17 PM
Nobody ‘wigged out’ dummy.
Everyone just thought it was weird in a funny, haha way, that you were so livid about something so irrelevant to the current discussion.

mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 10:19 PM
Mattshu,
You need to stop playing moderator on this website. You are not affiliated with this website as far as I know, and nobody’s given you that role. Don’t annoint yourself to it.
How am I spamming this thread that nobody else is talking on? Let’s face it, you are choosing to talk to me now. Yet you want me banned? Nothing is stopping your from gushing over Romney, go for it.
You ROmneybots dont’ want criticism of your guy, so you’ll fling out some comments that I made regarding gay issues on some other thread in an attempt to discredit me. I know what your game is.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 10:20 PM
You all need to go over to the 8:30 PM thread for your gay conversation. You’re goint to hit a thousand here…go build up that one…it was 6 hours later.
KOOLAID2 on January 15, 2012 at 10:21 PM
Also, male or female?
Which one is it, troll? Previously you were female, then in this thread you’re ‘concerned’ about being raped by your bodybuilding gay rommate. Seems convenient that you’re not answering the charge of claiming to be a hermaphrodite.
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 10:21 PM
No, people like you think gays can’t be criticized on anything, and you think straight people are out to get you if we do disagree with gay people on anything. That’s the real paranoia.
Nobody is scared of your average gay person. Trust me on that. Nobody is quaking in their boots when they see Elton John.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 10:21 PM
I never have said I was a female. I don’t know where this comes from, or why it matters to you so much.
What if I am female? What does it matter? I think it’s pretty obvious I’m male since I was talking about my male gay roommmate and male dormsm, but hey, if you want to believe I’m female, that works for me. I don’t care.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 10:24 PM
matty poo is trying to walk back the fact he called for me to be banned when I simply made known my preference that gays not be alllowed to live in male dorms at colleges. In his view, that’s discrimination, segregation, etc. He flipped out over it. You are not going to revise what happened now that I’ve poke fun of your reaction at it.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 10:26 PM
Everyone’s reaction was WTF? Then you doubled down.
Yup, we’re the obsessed ones.
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 10:30 PM
Done feeding the troll. On to the next thread…
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 10:32 PM
See, this is the thing that annoys me…you social libs bring up some comments I made about gays on another thread to discredit me, so I simply talk about the comments I made and clarify some things that you guys were misleading on. But you then charactarize it as me being “obsessed” about gays.
Talking about gay issues doesn’t mean one is obsessed. That’s the stupid logic you are trying to push. You trying to shut people down on the issue, after it brought up by you or one of your social mod brothers.
Dr. Tesla on January 15, 2012 at 10:33 PM
SO if you talk about football, you are obsessed with football?
If I talk about a movie, does that I mean I’m obssesed with the movie?
If I talk about the weather, is it an obsession, or am I just talking about the weather?
What is about gay people that makes people so batty? You go so uptight and rigid when a conservative says things about gay people. I don’t understand people like you, but I wangt to. I’m trying my best here.

BTW, I’m pretty socially conservative. I’m pro prop 8. Anti-gay marriage. I believe the slippery slope argument with regard to the gay agenda—that allowing gay marriage will force our children to learn that it’s equal to straight marriage. Like in CA where a teacher took her elementary students to a gay wedding on a field trip.
I just don’t think the govt should regulate dorm rules in college. I also don’t have any personal issues with people who are gay. I don’t judge, so gay or straight, who cares.
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 10:40 PM
Wrap your tiny brain around that. I’m out now.
mattshu on January 15, 2012 at 10:40 PM
You do judge straight people negatively if they simply say, hey, I rather not live with a gay person in my little tiny dorm room. You flipped out at that.
You’ve never had a gay roommate before so it’s easy for you to say, hey it’s no big deal living with a gay person. I’m so tolerant, look at me! That’s your attitude, but it’s ignorning the point that I was making. Gays don’t have to placed up on a pedastal, and it’s not anti-gay for a straight person to prefer not rooming with a gay person in college.

You made excuses for Romneycare based on the Massachusetts legislature, but Romney was proud of his Romneycare accomplishment. You can’t have it both ways. If Romney won’t disown Romneycare, then you can’t disown it for him.
And it’s dishonest to try. Worse, it presumes no one is smart enough to pick up on the contradiction.

Speaking of handing out cash, are you the taxpayer happy about handing over $750,000,000.00 to the Palestinians for infrastructure? I recall Palestinians dancing in the street when we lost some infrastructure in NY in 2001. I doubt if most Americans would approve but who’s asking them? This just frees up money to use for jihad against Israel. Guess Obama doesn’t mind – he’s so generous with our money.
Has anyone explained why we are financially responsible for the Palestinian infrastructure?

…never waste a crisis, opportunism went both ways in the “prayer” sold and bought by Mitt to favorably broadcast a so-called faith promoting experience. Sickening, whether it’s the woman expecting a new kitchen or another expecting her bills to be paid by Obama, or this version by Romney. What, at least Mitt actually paid the woman, so it’s better than Obama who failed to fulfill expectations.
“Promise them anything; just get their votes!” Obamalite Romney 2008
Give a person a fish v. teaching a person to successfully fish.
John Wayne nailed it well enough in the 70s for anyone with a brain to witness today regarding expectations. “I don’t give you anything, and you don’t give me anything. I pay a fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work. That way we can both hold up our heads.”
If Mitt truly believed in retraining an unemployed workforce, and wants to perform true charity, he’d have already organized through his own private funds and business experience a private charitable institution of education and retraining. Not profitable enough to garner a “savior’s” interest given all these years since “saving the Olympics” [to profit whom, at whose expense]? If Mitt wanted to specifically be the answer to this woman’s sense of need, he could have privately funded her a grant to retrain or gain apprenticeship. It isn’t as if Mitt travels without his assistants at his side to make the necessary arrangements when his bowels are moved.

Can’t be more accurate than that…if you are not supporting Mitt for President, you are a bigot, anti-mormon, stupid…or you are a conservative, and conservatives can’t win, you have to be a RINO this election.
Anything Mitt has done in the past is erased and not pertinent, only what he says he is going to do is important.

Yep, sad but true. The big bucks coupled with Mitt’s obsessive aspirations to the presidency can breed unseemly collusions. Hey, we all know that elections can be bought, outcomes influenced and corrupted in many different ways. I have no doubt that many of the ‘conservative press/pundits’ have been bought off, either by edict from the establishment, their employers, or actual monetary compensation.

Personally, I think everyone turning this thread into a personal forum for venting on one another should be banned. Sheesh. Don’t feed the trolls.

Nah, that isn’t how it is at all.
All stupid, anti-Mormon bigots are not supporting Romney.
Not sure if you are smart enough to know the difference.

Yes, what I said has merit. The Mormon god is different from the God of the Bible and so is the jesus of Mormonism. What are you talking about? What if the woman becomes a Mormon?
