Open thread: Are you ready for the Huckabee South Carolina presidential forum?

posted at 7:15 pm on January 14, 2012 by Allahpundit

8 p.m. ET on Fox News. Actually, it’s too late to get ready: They taped it this afternoon. But here’s your thread in case you’re one of the three people in America who’s watching this tonight instead of the final battle of good and evil in Foxboro. The best reason to tune in, in fact, isn’t the candidates’ answers but rather to see how the GOP’s class warrior of Campaign 2008 handles the questioning on Bain. Remember when he used to say of Romney, “Americans want a president who looks like the guy they work with, not the guy who laid them off?” Apparently he’s warming up to the idea of the latter:

Romney has come under a lot of fire for Bain Capital’s investments in some companies that were then scaled down with layoffs to become profitable. That’s been demonized thoroughly by the media as corporate raiding, But it’s surprising to see so many Republicans embrace that leftwing argument against capitalism. It’s terrible for the workers who lose their jobs, and nobody likes to see viable companies looted and destroyed. But if downsizing can turn around a failing company, then at least it prevents all the jobs from being lost, and it sets up a stronger company that can grow and start rehiring. The term for this among people who aren’t hostile to capitalism is “creative destruction.” Bad companies have to die to make way for stronger companies, in the same way that old trees fall over to make way for new trees. The other alternative, the Obama way, is to use vast amounts of taxpayer money to prop up companies that are failing in the marketplace. Sometimes, with a big enough cash transfusion, they survive, like GM. Other times, all the money in the world can’t stop them from going belly-up and losing all their jobs, like Solyndra. But at least when a company that’s bought out by investors goes bankrupt, the money that’s lost was voluntarily invested, not taken from taxpayers at gunpoint.

Watching Mike Huckabee get indignant on behalf of Mitt Romney over a blue-collar attack on Wall Street would be a television moment made of pure spun gold. Especially since stories like this are just now starting to appear in South Carolina newspapers.

Rep. Tim Scott is co-moderating, so there’s another reason to watch: You’re likely to get some tea-party-flavored questions, possibly involving RomneyCare, that you won’t get at the Fox News debate on Monday or the CNN debate on Thursday. Feel free to use this as a thread for the forum or for the big game. Here’s some video to put you in the mood for either, or both.

Update: Oh my:

At a forum hosted by Mike Huckabee with 800 undecided South Carolina Republicans, Newt Gingrich was loudly booed when he criticized Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital, according to a Republican who attended the closed-press event.

“They were really angry,” said the attendee. The forum will be aired on Fox News tonight.

Live Feed for Huckabee: http://www.rentadrone.tv/debate/

Robert_Paulson on January 14, 2012 at 8:20 PM

Good question: Why should a Conservative vote for a Moderate candidate? Mitt said he had a surplus, 19 budget cuts, immigration law enforcment, budget cuts and English immersion. Cut state employees at the exec level. Pitches his former book.

He is rehearsed, I’ll give him that.

Sanderson said Bain Capital replaced longtime managers who had built Georgetown Steel with bean counters looking for ways to cut costs. They demanded increasing financial performance with little idea of how the daily operations were run, he said.

James Sanderson is the president of the bloody union, for God’s sake. He is one of the main sources for the article. Does anyone really think that this crap is going to play in a right to work state that just fought a major battle with the NLRB over a Boeing plant?

The original Reuters article on Bain and GS Technologies, which is far fair to Romney and Bain, is here.

A few select quotes:

Steven Kaplan, a University of Chicago professor of entrepreneurship and finance, describes Bain’s track record under Romney as “fantastic,” even if some ventures ended in failure.
“You don’t do this by just squeezing out costs. Those kinds of returns only come from growth,” he said. “Yes, they had some bad investments, I guess in the same way presidents make some bad calls.”

Some analysts say Bain should not be blamed for the company’s failure, noting that a wave of cheap imports forced nearly half of the U.S. steel industry into bankruptcy during that period. Another company set up around the same time, in which Bain took a minority stake, Steel Dynamics in Fort Wayne, Indiana, thrived.
“GS and Steel Dynamics were about as different as it gets,” industry analyst Michelle Applebaum said. GS’s core products were vulnerable to competition while Steel Dynamics became “one of the country’s lowest-cost manufacturers of steel sheet,” a product with more staying power. Steel Dynamics was also a non-union shop.

Charles Bradford, an analyst at Bradford Research, blames the union, in part, for the failure of GS Industries to survive in the new global marketplace.
“If you look at the steel companies that went under at the time, all of them were unionized,” he said. “I’m not saying this was the only factor — these firms faced other headwinds such as cheap labor and a strong dollar … but the unions held them back.”

Buried down at the bottom of the Myrtle Beach Online story: the South Carolina plant, although it went through some bad patches, is still running under a new owner and employes 300 people. The plant that closed down was in Kansas City.

Bain made mistakes at GS Technologies, including installing bad management, which they have admitted. But if you want to go after Mitt Romney because he pissed of the unions, go join the Democrat party.

therightwinger on January 14, 2012 at 8:28 PM

I disagree. The only time it is valid to vote for someone significantly removed from the Conservative area, is if those flaws are not of the type that will degrade the value of the brand of the party your supporting.
I have yet to see one such candidate, but if it was the only choice at that point, I would support it.
G.H.W. Bush was a moderate, look what he did to the brand.
George W. Bush was a moderate, look at the destruction he instigated against the reputation of the Republican party in 2004, 2006 and 2008.
