Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on January 13, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

For most Presidents, photo ops with the troops offer a great showcase for a Commander in Chief. Soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen are unfailingly polite and usually thrilled to meet the C-in-C, and usually the feeling is mutual.  According to author Michael Hastings, who wrote a new book called The Operators, the current C-in-C apparently considers it a bother:

After the talk, out of earshot from the soldiers and diplomats, he starts to complain. He starts to act very un-Obamalike, according to a U.S. embassy official who helped organize the trip in Baghdad.

He’s asked to go out to take a few more pictures with soldiers and embassy staffers. He’s asked to sign copies of his book. “He didn’t want to take pictures with any more soldiers; he was complaining about it,” a State Department official tells me. “Look, I was excited to meet him. I wanted to like him. Let’s just say the scales fell from my eyes after I did. These are people over here who’ve been fighting the war, or working every day for the war effort, and he didn’t want to take fucking pictures with them?”

Let’s hope this was just one bad day.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Soldiers can’t do anything for Obama and he considers interacting with them as important as pardoning the Thanksgiving turkey or attending the Easter egg roll on the South Lawn. It is not an important part of his life like golfing, going on vacation, or picking the NCAA final four.

Is this guy kidding? Complaining is very Obamalike. The man is a lazy narcissist. This PR guy had just bought into all the MSM spin about who Obama really is (selfless, devoted family man, hard worker, etc.). But then he’s confronted with the reality of the man, and the cognitive dissonance is hard to deal with.

I’d put the enlisted tally more 40/60 but generally agree. The important thing is that this was not the levels even during the low point of GWB.

And, BTW, as much as Rumsfeld was hated, he regularly went to Walter Reed and Bethesda to visit the troops without the press in tow. GWB and VP Cheney also made such trips. When do you suppose the last time Obama visited a military installation if it were not to play basketball on vacation, golf with his cronies, or getting on/off Air Force One on some fundraising trip? When do you suppose the last time he was around military members who were not serving him or ordered to stand behind him as props while he makes some campaign speech disguised as a “policy statement.”

His sandbox, his rules. And for someone who claims it’s ‘not about me,’ it reads like it’s all about you.

If that’s all you took out of this, you come off as intentionally obtuse. This is one more anecdote (thrown onto the already-existing mountain of them) that shows the CiC does NOT care about the troops, does not have any affection for or loyalty to them. They implement his policies, and in some cases, die for what he has decided. In return, Obama can’t be bothered to even deign to have his picture taken.

That precise refusal to come down from Olympus and that inability to see the world from vantage point other than down the bridge of his nose will (hopefully) cost Obama dearly.

Sorry but this story seems as credible as the fact that Michelle Obama is an angry black woman. Why wait for Carney to come out and make some statement about how much the jug-eared socialist loves and respects the military. There are three years of evidence that proves otherwise. And for my money one of the biggest affronts on the military was when Obama for a photo-op went to Dover AFB for the arrival of casualties from Afghanistan. Going wasn’t the problem- bringing the entire press corps with him was. And BTW this was at the same time that the Commander in Afghanistan couldn’t even get the bastard to return his calls.

The media can only show so many pictures, so Obama is satisfied with his quick photo-op – after all, that’s the only reason why he was there. Unlike Bush, you will never see Obama associating with the troops once the photo-ops are over.

I do wish people would quit making fun of his and Michelle’s looks, because that’s a liberal trick – attack the person, not his/her actions. I don’t give a wit about what Obama “looks” like, only his despicable, disrespectful and arrogant actions.

The Washington Post August 18, 2011
Obama: The Affirmative Action President
by Matt Patterson (columnist – Washington Post, New York Post, San Francisco Examiner).

Years from now, historians may regard the 2008 election of Barack Obama as an inscrutable and disturbing phenomenon, a baffling breed of mass hysteria akin perhaps to the witch craze of the Middle Ages. How, they will wonder, did a man so devoid of professional accomplishment beguile so many into thinking he could manage the world’s largest economy, direct the world’s most powerful military, execute the world’s most consequential job?
Imagine a future historian examining Obama’s pre-presidential life: ushered into and through the Ivy League despite unremarkable grades and test scores along the way; a cushy non-job as a “community organizer”; a brief career as a state legislator devoid of legislative achievement (and in fact nearly devoid of his attention, so often did he vote “present”) ; and finally an unaccomplished single term in the United States Senate, the entirety of which was devoted to his presidential ambitions. He left no academic legacy in academia, authored no signature legislation as a legislator.
And then there is the matter of his troubling associations: the white-hating, America-loathing preacher who for decades served as Obama’s “spiritual mentor”; a real-life, actual terrorist who served as Obama’s colleague and political sponsor. It is easy to imagine a future historian looking at it all and asking: how on Earth was such a man elected president?
Not content to wait for history, the incomparable Norman Podhoretz addressed the question recently in the Wall Street Journal:
To be sure, no white candidate who had close associations with an outspoken hater of America like Jeremiah Wright and an unrepentant terrorist like Bill Ayers, would have lasted a single day. But because Mr. Obama was black, and therefore entitled in the eyes of liberaldom to have hung out with protesters against various American injustices, even if they were a bit extreme, he was given a pass.
Let that sink in: Obama was given a pass — held to a lower standard — because of the color of his skin.
Podhoretz continues:
And in any case, what did such ancient history matter when he was also so articulate and elegant and (as he himself had said) “non-threatening,” all of which gave him a fighting chance to become the first black president and thereby to lay the curse of racism to rest?
Podhoretz puts his finger, I think, on the animating pulse of the Obama phenomenon — affirmative action. Not in the legal sense, of course. But certainly in the motivating sentiment behind all affirmative action laws and regulations, which are designed primarily to make white people, and especially white liberals, feel good about themselves.

Unfortunately, minorities often suffer so that whites can pat themselves on the back. Liberals routinely admit minorities to schools for which they are not qualified, yet take no responsibility for the inevitable poor performance and high drop-out rates which follow. Liberals don’t care if these minority students fail; liberals aren’t around to witness the emotional devastation and deflated self-esteem resulting from the racist policy that is affirmative action. Yes, racist.

Holding someone to a separate standard merely because of the color of his skin — that’s affirmative action in a nutshell, and if that isn’t racism, then nothing is. And that is what America did to Obama.
True, Obama himself was never troubled by his lack of achievements, but why would he be? As many have noted, Obama was told he was good enough for Columbia despite undistinguished grades at Occidental; he was told he was good enough for the US Senate despite a mediocre record in Illinois ; he was told he was good enough to be president despite no record at all in the Senate. All his life, every step of the way, Obama was told he was good enough for the next step, in spite of ample evidence to the contrary. What could this breed if not the sort of empty narcissism on display every time Obama speaks?
In 2008, many who agreed that he lacked executive qualifications nonetheless raved about Obama’s oratory skills, intellect, and cool character. Those people — conservatives included — ought now to be deeply embarrassed. The man thinks and speaks in the hoariest of clichés, and that’s when he has his teleprompter in front of him; when the prompter is absent he can barely think or speak at all. Not one original idea has ever issued from his mouth — it’s all warmed-over Marxism of the kind that has failed over and over again for 100 years.

And what about his character? Obama is constantly blaming anything and everything else for his troubles. “Bush did it; it was bad luck; I inherited this mess.” It is embarrassing to see a president so willing to advertise his own powerlessness, so comfortable with his own incompetence. But really, what were we to expect? The man has never been responsible for anything, so how do we expect him to act responsibly?
In short: our president is a small and small-minded man, with neither the temperament nor the intellect to handle his job. When you understand that, and only when you understand that, will the current erosion of liberty and prosperity make sense. It could not have gone otherwise with such a man in the Oval Office.

LizardLips on January 13, 2012 at 9:58 AM

Give Obama a break. His caddy was probably waiting for him on the 9th hole and he was running late.

vcferlita on January 13, 2012 at 10:07 AM

I’m thinking this was more a typical day for Obama, who has made no attempt in the past for hiding his contempt for the military. Count me as unsurprised by this.

simkeith on January 13, 2012 at 10:08 AM

Heh. The it’s not really about the Troops, although he probably sneers at them.

It’s the job. He hates having to do any work. Unless a teleprompter or a golf course is involved it simply isn’t important.

CorporatePiggy on January 13, 2012 at 10:25 AM

Give Obama a break. His caddy was probably waiting for him on the 9th hole and he was running late.

vcferlita on January 13, 2012 at 10:07 AM

Um… That isn’t a factor. He doesn’t care if somebody else is waiting for him. Now if he were waiting on the caddy, that is something else alltogether.

Remember. In Obama’s world it is all about Obama 24/7/365. Nobody else matters. Nothing else matters. That’s why you see the jug-eared socialist spending more time making his NCAA basketball championship picks than he did trying to get agreement out of the Congressional supercommittee. That is why he was out golfing and taking his girls for ice cream while Tehran was filled with protesters. That is why he thinks nothing of spending millions of tax dollars for a date night. In Obama’s world we are all nothing but the means to make him and his grifter family more comfy (God forbid Michelle Obama would have to wait four hours to ride with her husband to Martha’s Vineyard when there are all those Air Force people who can give her a lift now).

Three years ago, any criticism of Obama was greeted with sanctimonious lectures from so-called conservatives telling me I had to give the man a chance before I condemned this administration. Is it okay to be critical now and, if so, where is my apology for being so right about these people???

Let’s stick to Obamateurisms that he says right out in the open where everyone, including the teleprompter, can hear or see it. I really don’t think you’ll have trouble coming up wth them.

GWB on January 13, 2012 at 11:10 AM

I don’t know that it’s entirely an anti-military thing. He doesn’t press the flesh with Congress, either. Maybe an anti-American institutions thing. Or simply that he greatly prefers the pleasure of his own company.

de rigueur on January 13, 2012 at 11:11 AM

Isn’t that why Michelle chose military families as one of her “projects”–to attempt to hide her and her husband’s contempt for the military.
Just like his toughness on terrorist it’s all a part of his con job. Obama wouldn’t have a prayer of reelection if his disdain for our military was known or if he didn’t try to keep us safe.

But Senator Obama didn’t hide anything. He was against the surge, he voted against additional armor for troops, and he accused our military of air-raiding villages. Apparently Rev Wright did have some influence afterall.

bailey24 on January 13, 2012 at 11:15 AM

The troops make him nervous and they embarrass him.

Honor, Duty, Country. These are concepts that are foreign to the current CIC.

EconomicNeocon on January 13, 2012 at 11:21 AM

Unfortunately, not one bad day. Witness Michelle’s bad temper at the Veteran’s Day ceremony in 2011 and Obama going off to play golf after his Memorial Day talk at Arlington. They both do not like the military and feel no loyalty to our men and women in uniform. This is why it was so easy for him to repeal DADT: The real effect on the real people in uniform was unimportant, only achieving a policy goal mattered.

UnrepentantCurmudgeon on January 13, 2012 at 11:48 AM

LizardLips on January 13, 2012 at 9:58 AM

That was a wonderful summary. I had not seen it before. He is definitely the affirmative action president, and the whole country is suffering for it. Hillary would have brought at least some competence to the office, having made it as a successful attorney at a time when women were significantly discriminated against. I wouldn’t have liked all of her positions, or everything that she did, but she would at least have put some effort into the office and making the country prosper. She might have failed, but at least she would have tried. Obama has no such ambition. He does not expect to be required to put forth any effort at all.

Still, would have been nice if just once the masses could have heard the truth about this narcissistic elitist before *they* elected him CoC.

kmid219 on January 13, 2012 at 12:11 PM

Obama can’t take time to shake hands with our troops but he has plenty of time for celebrities. What a disgusting little man.

GrannySunni on January 13, 2012 at 12:42 PM

Let’s hope this was just one bad day.

This ungrateful and disgraceful disrespect for the troops almost certainly reflects his heartfelt contempt for them.

I am reminded of a story that came out of Michigan during Obama’s campaign. A Michigan police officer who was detailed to assist in security told of being disrespected by both Barack and Michelle. He ans his fellow officers were instructed to go behind the bus and remain out of sight of the Obamas as they exited. The campaign event was at a school, and he was further instructed to stay out of Michelle’s sight while she was in the school, because she “didn’t want to see any cops around”.

novaculus on January 13, 2012 at 12:56 PM

I was disappointed with President George Bush’s domestic policies in his latter years, but there is no questioning his character and the seriousness and respect he had for the Office as he proved when he went to Iraq to spend the first Thanksgiving of the war with the troops. Naturally any security risk would have squashed it. If it was squashed, I’m sure no mention would have been made of the attempt. Nevertheless, it was successful. He was there. It was a major morale boost for the troops. That is how the Commander In Chief acts. Obama is the Wuss In Chief.

Same thing happened to me when I was a young lieutenant working at a military college and Sen. Chuck Robb came for a visit. I was assigned as his aide-de-camp for the visit. Wow! A senator! And, like me, from Virginia no less! I was young and idealistic. I had no political ideas or convictions. I was just excited to be assigned this duty for such a well known and high ranking individual from my home state. Well, I meet him at the helicopter. We shake hands. He asks me in his normal, every day voice if there a place he can go to straighten up and I show him to the auditorium and the men’s room. He comes out looking all trim and proper, pulls up on stage to begin his speech and everything about him changed. He’s voice, his stature, his bearing…everything. And it struck me. This is all a stage. This is all just an act. He’s nothing more than an actor playing a role…with a hell of a lot of power and influence. Now, I can’t say if he’s a good person or not, but this was close to thirty years ago and I still remember that moment. I did my duty during the rest of his visit, but I tell ya. The wind had certainly gone out of those sails!

“Soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen are . . . “

As the proud son of a man who was buried in his United States Marine Corps uniform, and despite the fact that the Marines would say that one should always capitalize the “m” in “marine” or “marines” regardless of whether that word is referring to the United States Marine Corps or to a member or members of the United States Marine Corps, I say that one should only capitalize that “m” if (i) one would be capitalizing the initial letter in “soldier,” “sailor” or “airman” in a similar context (such as in starting a sentence), or (ii) one is using the word “Marine” or “Marines” to refer to the United States Marine Corps in the same way that one would be using the word “Army” to refer to the United States Army or “Navy” to refer to the United States Navy.

So, these are OK:
Army sniper, Marine sniper
Navy pilot, Marine sniper
The soldiers marched 30 miles
The marines lifted each other up over the obstacle
He is a sailor
He is a Marine [if you mean to say in shorthand, he is a member of the United States Marine Corps]
Soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen are . . .

As much as I like as of these and they all fit, I just couldn’t get past needing to add something else, so added my own to them…

Just had to add in my two cents worth. Continue on.

Wow, just wow. It isn’t even the third week of January, and Obama may not top this one all year. On second thought, he probably will considering we are heading into a nasty election.

Let’s hope this was just one bad day.

Ed, Ed, Ed, what do we need to do to convince you that B Hussein Obama, our Kenyan Communist Muslim-In-Chief, is an inherently evil, hateful man?

“Un-Obamalike”? I beg to differ. Mr Obama is like any typical Democrat politician – they HATE our military. If he had his druthers, he’d be spitting on them like his leftist mentors did to our veterans returning from Vietnam. C’mon, his chief mentor Bill Ayers tried to kill them!

We can’t vote this despicable POS out of office soon enough. Ten months and counting……

Bingo!

“You Guys Make a Pretty Good Photo Op,” President Obama Jokes to Troops at Osan Air Base

Folks, let’s wait until this story plays out; right now we have just one man’s word. Let’s listen to the inevitable White House denial and then judge for ourselves.
radjah shelduck on January 13, 2012 at 8:28 AM

Really? Just one mans word if we ignore the thousands who heard him say “You Guys Make a Pretty Good Photo Op,” or when he brought the press with special night vision cameras to film him watching the remains of our troops coming home?
