A dance party for Obama!

posted at 6:57 pm on January 13, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Sometimes, I really wish I were in the Obamas’ inner social circle. If I were, in just the past few years, I might have feasted at a Mad Hatter Halloween party, listened to Paul McCartney while the rest of the world lamented an oil spill and joined a conga line at the president’s most recent birthday party.

Unfortunately for me, I’m far from friendly with the Obamas, but, as it turns out, I can party with Obama, after all! And so can you!

The Obama campaign’s under-40 organizing arm, Generation 44, is hosting a dance party on Jan. 18 to raise funds for the president’s reelection campaign.

The party, held at Boston dance club The Goodlife, will charge $20 per ticket and feature local Boston performer DJ MR McNeill.

Billed as “A Dance Party for Obama” the event is a 21-and-over event and will run from 7-ll PM.

It’s unclear whether the president will be present at the party, but I’m betting no. Either way, it’s actually a clever idea. Need I say it again? The GOP candidates could definitely stand to do more to reach out to young voters — if not for their own election efforts now, then at least for the future of the GOP.

I wonder if they’ll be checking to make sure everyone is a US citizen. Campaign funding laws apply even to dance parties, I believe.

I don’t disagree, but throwing childish MTV type dance parties is not the way to go.

Obama should be paying fools to attend any rally for him. For someone who already has a billion dollars plus, ( tarp money unaccounted) to spend, why does he need more? This is like the peasants in North Korea going to a party honoring Kim Jung Dung and giving up their ration of food for entry fee.

Next thing you know, Oromney will be hosting a party featuring dancers led by him who dance around the issues and require $10.000 wagers to gain entry.

You, ahhh, might want to talk to Ron Paul about how to do outreach to young voters. He’d tell you to try principled uncompromising stands around a set of core values, even in the face of blistering opposition.

And that you really don’t need any god**mned dance parties!!

I tend to disagree a bit with Tina on this. Not against the idea that GOP candidates should connect more with younger voters, but against the idea of youth gimmicks to show you’re a hip, with it, today coolcat who’s down with gang. I think voters of all ages would be quite enthused with having a real “adult in the room” who connects and who doesn’t need to go “Disco Stu”.

I agree 100% with this sentiment. But it’s not just a one-way conversation with them. We need to listen to the youth and not pursue an agenda that alienates them nor pick a presidential candidate for 2012 which alienates the youth as much as Obama energized the youth in 2008. This is why we need Romney as our nominee. The only remaining even remotely plausible alternative is Santorum, and he would alienate the youth and jeopardize not just this election, but future elections as the under 30 crowd picks up the habit of voting Democrat.
