Weekly jobless claims spike up 24K to 399K
posted at 9:15 am on January 12, 2012 by Ed Morrissey
That’s two big spikes in a row for weekly initial jobless claims, although this one has a twist. Last week, the announced number of initial jobless claims was 381K. Today’s report shows a further bounce upward to 399K, but the gap is wider thanks to a rare downward revision in the previous week’s figures (see update below):
In the week ending January 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 399,000, an increase of 24,000 from the previous week’s revised figure of 375,000. The 4-week moving average was 381,750, an increase of 7,750 from the previous week’s revised average of 374,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent for the week ending December 31, unchanged from the prior week’s revised rate.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending December 31, was 3,628,000, an increase of 19,000 from the preceding week’s revised level of 3,609,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,605,000, unchanged from the preceding week’s revised average.
This year, there have been some rumblings from economic analysts that the Department of Labor’s seasonal adjustments are overly aggressive. Jay Cost wrote about this on Tuesday, and produced a nifty chart detailing the problem, which appears specific to December:
As I noted last Friday, there was a quirky gain of 40,000 jobs in delivery services like UPS and FedEx. This will be “given back” next month, in all likelihood.
More broadly, per Cardiff Garcia of the Financial Times and BizzyBlog, there has been a strange development in the seasonal adjustments to holiday economic numbers since the start of the current downturn.
The economic data that the media reports is typically adjusted for seasonal factors to give us a sense of the underlying trends in the economy. However, the economic collapse in the fourth quarter of 2008 might have been partially interpreted by the statistical models that produce the adjustments as a change in seasonal patterns. So, the models may now be adding a larger seasonal correction than they should be. As we can see here, it makes a difference in the numbers that the media reports. …
The formula that calculates the seasonally adjusted number started adding an extra 100,000 or so jobs to the December adjustment factor in 2008. If we take that out, we would have an actual print closer to 140,000 jobs, which (again) is right in line with the annual average.
That could be leading to a larger-than-expected seasonal impact on this weekly metric on initial claims, too.
Thanks to this statistical tweaking, even Reuters can’t ignore the significant shift in jobless claims:
The number of Americans applying for first-time jobless benefits rose on Thursday, reversing a recent decline and suggesting the labor market remains brittle.
Unemployment claims jumped to 399,000 in the first week of 2012, the highest in six weeks, from an upwardly revised 375,000 in the prior week. The four-week average of claims also marched higher to 381,750 from 374,000. …
The unemployment rate has fallen sharply in recent months and was 8.5 percent December, but some economists worry the drop has been due in part to discouraged workers dropping out of the labor force.
Not even in part. If Jay Cost’s calculations are accurate, then we only added just enough jobs in December to barely stay ahead of population growth, which means that the entirety of the drop would be due to a decline in the work force.
Update: If you followed the link, you’ve probably already realized my mistake. The 381K figure was from two weeks ago, not last week. The revision from last week was upward by 3K. Thanks to Steve Eggleston for the correction.

Really? We need these reports to know that the labor market remains “brittle.” Obama’s people are going to manipulate these numbers throughout 2012 to suggest a slowly recovering economy but IMO economic recovery is like smut, I know what it is when I see it. Put another way, if you have not had a job in a year then you really don’t need some government beancounter to tell you that the economy is “brittle.”

Disappointing numbers this morning … the 4-week average spiked up, but we’ll need more data before calling this a trend. Bigger disappointment was probably retail sales, which (core sales) dropped for the first time since December 2010. Doesn’t square with other reports we saw of strong holiday sales in late December … markets taking it in stride, factoring in Beige Book report of economic pop at the end of 4Q11 and better stability in Europe … will be very interesting to get the first look at 4Q11 GDP, due out Jan 27 …

MelonCollie on January 12, 2012 at 9:41 AM
I can attest to that. I ordered a crapload of stuff online during November and December thanks to some ridiculously low prices, and UPS was so backlogged they were hiring temp workers who occasionally dropped stuff off driving their own vehicles. Odds are those folks will be let go shortly if they haven’t been already.
Doughboy on January 12, 2012 at 9:43 AM
Knew it was going to happen….sadly….
People are mistaking movement on the bottom for “recovery”. No matter the economic climate, businesses that can squeak by have to start making moves and some time. They have to buy things, even if a little. And people get to sell them things as well. We get activity.
Yeah, we’re “growing” but employment participation is at an all time low, because the president’s attempt to hold the economy down, until the “green economy” got its legs under it and climbed on top and rode it–has been a failure–even for the “green economy”. That’s why so much money in the “stimulus” went to things that wouldn’t stimulate the economy and even subsidized a down economy (You contribute a bit less at ~20-50% of your career pay).
And then you have the failed green corporations the gov threw money at. And then factor in two things the poisoning of financial instruments and that the idea was to start a carbon-exchange and mint a new instrument of carbon credits.
Obama might even turn out to be some shade of “free-market” centrist, but regardless he as was a green-economy kool-aid drinker.

MelonCollie on January 12, 2012 at 9:53 AM
While these statistics deserve attention, I don’t think they tell the whole story. Sure the real unemployment rate nationally may be 11.4% but I think the GOP needs to do a better job of spelling out the specifics. The unemployment rate in many cities, like Detroit, is much higher. The unemployment rate among certain socio-economic and racial groups is much higher. Obama and his socialist minions should not be able to get away with glossing all this over when the very people he is counting on to mindlessly vote him back in office are among the most likely to be in the terminally unemployed catagory.

I’m one of those who left MI behind for better opportunity following the dual economic trainwrecks of Jennifer Granholm and Barak Obama. More than kids refusing to work I was shocked with the number of union folk who refuse to retrain, change careers, or relocate. The ones who lost their job as a UAW machinist in Flint and think it beneath them to take jobs that paid less than they were making before they were laid off.
It’s sad really, MI is a wonderful state with all sorts of potential but with a union problem. No business would willingly relocate to the state because of the pro-union bias of its laws.

Happy Nomad on January 12, 2012 at 10:04 AM
Well, if they’re using a complete time-series method of forecasting, it looks like they’re using Winter’s Method (or triple exponential smoothing).
Since it is a naive method (i.e., it relies only on the data), aperiodic effects like the ’2008 meltdown’ are very well known to distort the data.
The strength of these methods, however, is that the impact of those aperiodic effects fade over time. If there was an issue with the 2008 numbers (as is quite likely), this would mean that the 2009 numbers were affected more than the 2010 numbers, etc. etc.

And why is GR growing by leaps and bounds? It’s all that dirty DeVos, Van Andel and Meijer money that has created jobs and has kept Kent County for not feeling the pain as much as other areas. New high-tech medical jobs have offset even the closing of the GM stamping plant. I’m sure there were tax credits and other ways that some public money was involved (particularly with the move of MSU’s medical programs) but the fact of the matter is that GR is thriving because of private enterprise and generous individuals and not stimulus money or signs declaring GR to be a “cool city.”

Dave Rywall on January 12, 2012 at 10:25 AM
Since BHO’s inauguration, huge numbers of folks have lost their jobs, and huge numbers have stopped looking for work altogether. Last time I checked U6 was 15.6%, which includes numbers for people who have stopped looking. Since government estimates over the last 3 years have notoriously underestimated the problem, this number might be closer to a 17 to 19% range.
BHO has enough of a record that does not “reflect well” on him. Reality sometimes hurts. And it does not make us glad, it makes us yearn for policies that actually take real economics into consideration. Enough hopey changey unicorns!

No big surprise. I posted a prediction about this back in November or December, when unemployment numbers went down “unexpectedly” and the media and Dems went wild. Nothing but pre-holiday employment of temps for the holiday rush, then in January all those temps are let go. Happens every year, but for some reason (Obummer re-election perhaps?) this time the media didn’t want to compare the sudden dip in unemployment to prior years.

Reality in unemployment: go look at shadowstats.com and the Youngstown state university study on defacto unemployement.
And for the record the Emperor Zero has spent more money than all previous Presidents combined and none of his economic policies put one more US Citizen back to work.
He is also the first President who has manipulated the size of the actual labor force to make himself look good. He’s manipulated our GDP as well, but he isnt the first to do that. Mr. peanut gets that dubious honor.
dogsoldier on January 12, 2012 at 11:22 AM
But one thing that could be agreed upon in light of the huge budget deficit is that federal employment jobs should be reduced once the economy is fully back on a strong growth track.
Therefore, “government” cuts should support BHO’s theories that things are getting better already.
I’m not buying it…

Anytime there has been good economic news Ed has been very fair about giving credit where it is due.

Not “glad” at all…but not surprised, either. We don’t think his policies are good for this economy and even when it appears that something positive is happening it turns out to be nothing more than Obama’s administration manipulating the data or portraying a temporary holiday surge in hiring as a sign of “recovery.”

Actually the most we’re hoping for is that at some point the media will report these numbers straight. The economy is BAD. We know it. We know who did it. It’s largely because Obama did not waste a “good crisis” that we’re mad at him. It’s how destructive ideologues are. In the Reagan recovery, during the time that we gained 8 million jobs, we lost 8 million jobs in the Obama “recovery”.
You think any Americans can be happy about that, you’re a party hack. I think a lot of Americans are ignorant about it, and all they keep hearing is “recovery” from the media shills. That is something I’d like to see stop.
Face it, your guy used this excellent crisis to start an experiment on the “green economy” that was supposed to pay off. He blew that on a pipe dream. Dems have been happy with millions falling off the employment rolls into despair as long as the statistic goes down so you can re-elect the captain that scuttled his own ship.
People keep asking Pub candidates “Well what is your plan for the economy?” My answer would be “Simple, NOT doing the stupid stuff in the green-ulus bill, not paying union croneys first, NOT charging a boatload of money now, to eventually pay for an extended lower incomes for people 2 years from now. NOT thinking that school and municipal improvements are such a driver of the economy.” Face it, if you have x number of teachers when the economy is good and you have x number of teachers in a down economy–and it’s down–surely, having x-y teachers will negatively impact the economy as teachers take a reduced income on unemployment (notice that?), but keeping x teachers shows no signs of boosting (or “stimulating”) the economy.

“Some people say ‘That’s a socialist mop!’”
I say, “Uhh, Mr. President…that’s a jackhammer.”
