John Bolton endorses Mitt Romney, saying he’s “conservative enough”

posted at 6:00 pm on January 12, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton has officially endorsed Mitt Romney. He announced his decision in favor of the former Massachusetts governor last night on Greta van Susteren’s Fox News show and followed up that announcement today with a formal statement, which was released by the Romney campaign.

Bolton’s reasoning seems to come down to this: Mitt will have to do because nobody better is running. To van Susteren, he said, in reference to himself, “Looking at the whole range of prospective candidates, there was only one candidate who met my test as the ideal conservative, but he decided not to run.”

He then justified his decision to endorse Mitt anyway. “So faced with everyone else, I followed the William F. Buckley Jr. test which is to find the most conservative candidate who is capable of getting elected. There are obviously two variables there. But in the words of that old song, ‘gimme that old time religion, Romney’s conservative enough for me.’”

His formal statement of support for Romney was a little more rousing.

Of all the candidates, Mitt Romney possesses the strongest vision for America’s leadership role in the world, and I am proud to endorse him. … President Obama has sapped America’s credibility abroad, weakened our military and failed to lead on issues vital to U.S. national security. … Mitt Romney will restore our military, repair relations with our closest allies, and ensure that no adversary — including Iran — ever questions American resolve.”

For his part, Mitt Romney is delighted.

In his own statement, Romney called Bolton a “staunch defender of U.S. interests and values” and said he looks forward to consulting with him on ways to restore America’s standing abroad.

In advance of South Carolina, where Romney’s closest competitors are Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, this endorsement just underscores the perceived inevitability of a Romney nomination. Gingrich has said, should he become president, he would offer John Bolton the cabinet position of Secretary of State. Bolton’s decision to support someone else shows how likely he thinks it is that Gingrich will win. As for Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator has articulated a line of thinking on Islamism and Iran that somewhat resembles Bolton’s, so a Bolton endorsement of Santorum wasn’t out of the question. Had Bolton endorsed Santorum, Bolton’s announcement would have mattered more. As it is, this is just another unneeded notch on Romney’s belt, which seems ever more equipped to secure his nomination.

He may be conservative enough for Bolton, but he’s not conservative enough for those of us who see him as just another version of Obama.

Bolton is simply wrong – Romney is a flaming liberal, no different from obama. The GOP establishment mistakenly believes that we can fight liberalism with liberalism – the GOP establishment is handing the election to obama on a silver platter by pushing Romney. A “nominee” Romney is the democrats’ dream come true.

Bolton is a patriot and wants America saved from Barack Obama, so he’s endorsing based on electability. Compared to the other yahoos in this race, Romney is far and way the most electable. That’s a tiny little fact some folks without Bolton’s intellect and reasoning power are having a hard time figuring out.

Pragmatic on January 12, 2012 at 6:34 PM

I wonder what Bolton has to say about Afghanistan now.

Get Set for a Wallow

Granted, it’s not civil, acceptable, palace etiquette or, more important, US military doctrine to urinate on battle-killed enemy fighters — in this case, three dead Taliban in Afghanistan. But could we just move on?

That’ll be the day. Get set for Abu Ghraib 2, a national wallow in a wholly manufactured and inflated evil, the kind of masochistic frolic our extremely twisted elites, safe on their soundstages, find so extremely pleasurable. Get set for the exclusion of any and all context, either related to heat-of-battlefield conditions, battle fatigue, or Taliban depredations. We have met the enemy and he is us, again — and thank God. Or is that thank Allah?

What is most distressing is watching the ISAF PR machinery crank up. The desecration of Taliban bodies — as in already dead, according to ISAF’s own orders and assorted United Nations-NATO-focus-group preferences — is of immeasurably greater concern than even the murder of a 20-year-old Kentucky-born soldier while playing volleyball on a US-Afghan base in Afghanistan, shot in the head in cold blood last Sunday by an Afghan Army member – Kill No. 43 by Afghan security forces inside the wire over the past two years.

Also distressing is the fact that this deadly pattern of Afghan assault against the very nations that shore up Hamid Karzai’s crummy government doesn’t get a rise out of the Afghan leader; this freak incident does.Years of all-too-faithful service and sacrifice by US and allied forces to end the jihad in Afghanistan count for nothing; years of restrictive ROEs designed to save Afghan lives at the expense of American and allied lives are disregarded; and forget about the billions of dollars spent by the West to to build an Afghanistan of unimaginable grandiosity; Karzai has.

Rather than calm passions, Karzai arouses them: “The government of Afghanistan is deeply disturbed by a video that shows American soldiers desecrating dead bodies of three Afghans. This act by American soldiers is simply inhuman and condemnable in the strongest possible terms. We expressly ask the US government to urgently investigate the video and apply the most severe punishment to anyone found guilty in this crime.”

In Islam the most severe punishment would go beyond even stoning and beheading. Get the Hell out of Afghnaistan and get the Hell out of Afghanistan NOW!!!

It looks like Romney is going to be the nominee. So, the only thing left to do is elect conservatives to the House and Senate and hopefully they will hold his feet to the fire.

Looks like Romney is set to save me $1.50 because I won’t have to waste the gas money to go vote in the general. If there were more than a buck fifty difference between Romney and Obama I’d make the trip. But there isn’t.

House or senate seats?

Nah, I don’t hate him. I even voted for him, once.

But he really isn’t as conservative as Romney. But no worries, when he finally comes to his senses he will endorse Romney too. Thus making him just another RINO for Romney!

Huntsman: Pro-life, passed healthcare reform w/o a mandate, passed massive tax-cuts, protected gun rights, passed school voucher program.

Mitt: Flip-flopped from pro-choice to pro-life, passed healthcare “reform” w/ a mandate, claims to not have raised taxes despite creating new “fees” (aka, taxes), signed an anti-gun bill, no school voucher program.

No, Abby and at least two others are also supporters. So, there’s a minimum of five of us. LOL.

Now if only we can get 5 more people from this site on board!
