Gallup: Majority of conservatives consider Romney “acceptable”
posted at 2:30 pm on January 10, 2012 by Tina Korbe
As the aura of inevitability around Mitt Romney grows and as attacks on his record appear more frivolous, more and more potential voters see the former Massachusetts governor as an “acceptable” nominee, according to a Gallup poll released today.
Fifty-nine percent of self-identified conservative Republicans say they find Romney acceptable, as do 59 percent of self-identified moderate or liberal Republicans. That makes Romney the only candidate with majority support among both the conservative and liberal wings of the GOP, as Gallup explains:
Romney’s broad acceptability across ideological lines is decidedly not the case for his competitors. Conservative Republicans view Gingrich, Santorum, and Perry as more acceptable than do moderate/liberal Republicans. On the other hand, moderate/liberal Republicans on average view Paul and Huntsman as more acceptable than conservatives.
Nevertheless, the race remains fluid. Little more than a month ago, 62 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents considered Newt Gingrich an acceptable nominee; now, just 46 percent do. Inversely, just 27 percent of Rs and GOP-leaning indies considered Santorum an acceptable nominee a month ago; now, 45 percent do.
Romney will likely win tonight in New Hampshire, but that doesn’t mean the race is over. So far, he has managed to run a surprisingly impeccable campaign — just a few gaffes to his name — but he’s far from infallible. He’s still capable of uttering comments that aren’t particularly vote-savvy, even if they make sense. The ongoing flap about his “firing” comments are proof of that. Perhaps most importantly, he has yet to generate the kind of enthusiasm that Republicans presumably would like to feel about their nominee. Even in New Hampshire, where Romney is highly favored to win, his numbers have dropped as other candidates have put in appearances in the state. The Fix’s Chris Cillizza even suggests that, if Romney fails to win the Granite State with a double-digit victory, his win could be painted as an underperformance. Should the other GOP candidates ever decide to attack him for the legitimate flaws in his record and should conservatives decide to coalesce around a different candidate, the GOP primary picture could be very different coming out of South Carolina than it is going into New Hampshire.
Then again, if the old article of faith is right that, when it comes to primaries, “Democrats fall in love, while Republicans fall in line,” then Mitt Romney will probably be the nominee.

You recognize their methods of debate and the way they use circular logic and when that doesn’t work, they resort to name calling. There seems to be a fanatical desire for one of their own to be acknowledged as superior to his fellows (or gals).
They invariably signal who they are, and like Obama supporters, have this strange notion that their man is without sin. He’s a faithful husband after all.
And no. I’m not naming names.

And you match the description of that evil person living in a nation that’s fogotten God in Psalm 9:17: “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.”

“Is acceptable, acceptable?”
Depends what the meaning of is, is.
WolvenOne on January 10, 2012 at 4:26 PM
Tina asked if acceptable is acceptable…well unless you think the conservative fairy is going to leave a true conservative under your pillow Romney just might have to be acceptable.
Four years ago the same people were railing against the idea of McCain and hoping for someone else, in fact many of the people whining about Romney today, were hoping for him back then.
And they know that ever four years we go through this, we have elections..so maybe they should put their time and energy into coming up with a viable alternative who not only says the things that conservatives want to hear, but who has the character and the mental and emotional capacity to survive the process…but instead they support people like Cain and Gingrich and Perry who never had a chance anyway.
And then they complain.
Romney is qualified, he is accomplished, he is intelligent..and he is capable of surviving the process so considering how the process works, yes, acceptable might just have to be acceptable.

Portia thx for the back up. I like the way you think.
MontanaMmmm on January 10, 2012 at 4:28 PM
No it isn’t. Nor has it ever been. Romney is the only viable candidate and despite the moles popping up every couple of weeks there was never any chance of any of them winning. The race only appeared “fluid” to those who wanted to pretend that the outcome was ever in doubt.

No such thing as a politician without sin. They are sinners just by being politicians.
RomneyCare is a big sin. I’m just willing to overlook it because of his repeated calls to repeal Obamacare.

but apocalypse dude — that’s happening now, either way. If you are arguing that Romney’s Mormonism is heretical — that it’s twisted the Bible up — is Obama’s weirdness better?

Not sure if this is projection or delusion.
Those of us who have chosen to support in the Primaries most certainly do not think Mitt is the next Reagan.
We know that he is not some “Super Conservative” because there is no such thing.
His stated plans and ideas are Center-Right to Right and therefore (for many of us) he is the strongest candidate and a much welcome contrast to Obama.

I don’t see Mormon apologetics here, just desperation to defeat Obooba even if it means voting for Mitt.

He’ll win me over in the short term if his Superpacs decimate Obama the way they have his primary competetion. Long term will be tougher. He’ll have to shrink government. The clearest sign of success will be if normal people (not the 1% of us who are political junkies) get to go back to their lives and not worry about politics or the economy under his tenure.

Nope. It is quarter of closing time and the ugly lights are about to come on. Standards are dropping and candidates are hoping weve got our beere goggles on.
Make no bones about it. We are settling. We have no choice. All the candidates are terribly flawed and wouldn’t survive against a mediocre field of RINOs in a normal election year.

We’ve had some great presidents, some pretty mundane presidents, and some few awful presidents.
With solid GOP majorities in the house and senate, I mean new TP members like we got two years ago, we can live with Romney in the WH.
Close the thread.

Gunlock Bill nailed it.
Who has the organization and the money and the support to run a general campaign? Mitt Romney.
Do you really want to be defending Newt Gingrich’s latest outrageously stupid comment until November, when Obama beats him in the general election?
I don’t think so.
Do you really think Rick Santorum will get votes from INDEPENDENTS and MODERATES?
I don’t think so.
Do you like Jon Huntsman, a candidate I have tried for 6 months to get you ideologues to research? No you don’t like him; he’s more moderate than Romney to you, despite the fact that he’s the CONSERVATIVE. But, unfortunately, because you ignored him, mocked him and denigrated him as a RINO, he never could pull in money enough to build organization enough to wage a vigorous general campaign, much less get the delegates for the nomination. You screwed the pooch on that one, Tina.
Who’s left? Oh yeah: RON PAUL.
I don’t think so. Next.
Oh, yeah: Buddy Roemer.
I don’t think so.
Herman Cain’s out; Rick Perry SHOULD be out, and will be after South Carolina. Sorry, he’s been a great gov. of the great state of Texas, but he’s not Presidential material.
You’re left with the very man you deserve to be left with at the end of this sad primary beginning: Mitt Romney. He’s the only candidate who has the money, the organization and the experience to take the fight to Obama!
So SUCK IT UP CUPCAKE. It won’t get any better going forward, and the best thing for conservatives to do now is to get behind their candidate, stop all this weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth and determine that you’d rather BE RID OF OBAMA than fantasize about cloning Ronald Reagan–who, I’ll remind you WASN’T CONSERVATIVE ENOUGH FOR YOU IDEOLOGUES EITHER IN THE BEGINNING.
Sheesh. Stop the INSANITY. We have to get rid of OBAMA.

By the time primaries roll around in my state (June), it’s all over but the shouting. So it doesn’t pay to get too excited about it. I’m not wild about any of the candidates.
The bottom line seems to be how alarmed a person is by Øbama. If you think sending a message to the GOP is more important than poofing Ø, you are less alarmed by him than I am. I think a 2nd term would be worse than the 1st. I’ll vote for Bullwinkle Moose over Ø.

Amendment I. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof…
Just a little reminder for Apoc there.
Yes, the Founding Fathers were spiritual, God-fearing men. Yes, they stressed that a strong faith and strong moral values were necessary for America to thrive.
But the fact remains that it says “religion”, not “Christian denomination”. As long as we respect others’ right to life, liberty and property, in America we’re free to follow whatever faith – or no faith – that we feel is right.
And we’ll have to put up with the fact that some religions practice same-sex marriages, some religions condone the use of mind-altering drugs, some religions favor one race over another, and there’s that one religion that deifies a guy with a pipe in his mouth.
We can talk up and advertise our faith all we want. But to impose the rules, doctrines, and no-no’s of one particular faith on everybody is just plain un-American. Jesus invited his fellow countrymen to follow in his ways, but he did it without pointing a Roman spear at them.
