William Daley packs his bags for Chicago

posted at 5:10 pm on January 9, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

I tend to agree with somebody who earlier asked if the White House was treating the entire week of the New Hampshire primary as “take out the trash Friday.” Word came out on the eve of the first primary voting that Bill Daley would be making an early exit stage left and heading back to Chicago. He will be replaced by Jack Lew.

William Daley is stepping down as White House chief of staff and budget director Jack Lew is taking over the President Obama’s team as it heads into a tough election year, senior administration officials say.

Daley gave his letter of resignation to the president in a private meeting in the Oval Office last week, recounting the administration’s successes of his one year on the job and saying it was time for him to return to his hometown of Chicago.

President Obama made the news official this afternoon in a brief appearance in the state dining room of the White House, where he told reporters in somber tones that he is sorry to see Daley leave.

“There’s no question I will deeply miss having Bill at my side here at the White House,” Obama said. “But Chicago is only a phone call away.”

After accepting Daley’s resignation last week, the president said, he asked for advice on a replacement.

“He told me there was one clear choice,” Obama said, “and I believe he’s right.”
Lew was the first and only choice for the job, aides to the president say.

I’m still not seeing any really firm reasons for the departure, considering that Daley had previously said he planned on staying on through the entire reelection effort. Steve Benen (so take that for what it’s worth) is guesstimating that Daley simply was “too difficult to work with” in terms of congressional leaders, including Harry Reid. While fun, I’m not sure we can believe alternate rumors that Daley was asked to play the Mad Hatter at the Obama’s secret tea party in 2009.

Daley’s own stated reason?

“It is time to get back to the city I love,”

Ah yes… Chicago, Illinois. The city so nice they say it with vice.

My first reaction was that it was all about the timing. I mean, this is an election year after all. You need to get back to Chicago early to map out the nine different places you’re going to vote in November, and that doesn’t just happen by itself. But that really doesn’t cut the mustard either. OK… it’s fair enough to say that his prickly character was causing problems with congressional leadership. It’s a valid reason in and of itself. But if that’s all there is to it, wouldn’t you give yourself a longer runway to ease in a new leadership structure and feather the nest back home? Why dash something like this out in the midst of a hectic news cycle? I can’t help but wonder if there isn’t more here that we’re not catching wind of yet.

Your thoughts?

Update (Allahpundit): Chuck Todd sums it up well, I think: Daley was brought in for two reasons, to work with the new House Republican majority and to improve White House relations with the business community. How’d that work out?

Via the Examiner, here’s a golden Jack Lew moment from last February, insisting that Obama’s new budget wouldn’t add to the debt. Even Politifact couldn’t spin that one. Exit question: Why does The One keep losing chiefs of staff?

I do believe there at least 4 trillion reasons to have your budget director as your chief of staff. But how does Zero expect him to have any sway over congressmen. He couldn’t even develop a budget that any of them would vote for. Typical thought process for a super intelligent chief executive.

So inside that White House, you have these little sub groups right? Each of those groups reports to Jarrett. She oversees everything. Everything. That is, until Bill Daley arrived. Bill started to assert himself. He’s the White House Chief of Staff for -expletive- sakes! He started to bring power back to the first floor of the West Wing, and leave Jarrett more isolated in her second floor office. Jarrett pushed back. Daley took it. Jarrett complained to Michelle. Michelle stood down. She got word to back the -expletive- off and that is what she did. So this situation finally reached a climax recently – Valerie Jarrett lost it. I don’t have the specifics of the meeting, I believe it concerned a staff member, perhaps Geithner…been getting a lot of chatter surrounding Geithner, or what information – whatever it was that set her off. But she lost it. The lady went ballistic, which I’m pretty certain is just what Daley wanted. Something was to have come to her first. An agenda, a meeting plan – something along those lines. Daley froze her out. She was left upstairs while the meeting took place.  Staff were instructed – directly instructed, to leave her out of it. Word got back to Jarrett of course. And so, she summoned Daley to her office. Now understand, officially, Valerie Jarrett is a senior adviser, right? That’s her position. She’s not the White House Chief of Staff. That position, if held by someone who knows how to fully utilize the power inherent in that position…that’s a powerful spot. Bill Daley knows that kind of power, and he knows how to use it against a creature like Valerie -expletive- Jarrett. So Jarrett summons Daley to her office. She waits while he is supposed to make the trip upstairs to see her.

This is worth reading. The original interview was well before Daley announced he was leaving.

Look, Chicago owns Obama. He is a product of the Chicago Machine, an output. A Daley is an input.

Via the Examiner, here’s a golden Jack Lew moment from last February, insisting that Obama’s new budget wouldn’t add to the debt. Even Politifact couldn’t spin that one.

Yeah, and Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats took control of the House and Senate in the 2006 elections because they promised to put an end to deficit spending. They lied. They doubled and tripled annual deficits, and the TOTAL national debt is now 75% higher than it was just 5 years ago when the DemonRats took majority control. ($15.2 Trillion vs. less than $8.7 Trillion just 5 years ago)

With integrity, civility and fiscal discipline, our New Direction for America will use commonsense principles to address the aspirations and fulfill the hopes and dreams of all Americans. That is our promise to the American people.

Our federal budget should be a statement of our national values. One of those values is responsibility. Democrats are committed to ending years of irresponsible budget policies that have produced historic deficits. Instead of piling trillions of dollars of debt onto our children and grandchildren, we will restore “Pay As You Go” budget discipline.

Budget discipline has been abandoned by the Bush Administration and its Republican congressional majorities. Congress under Republican control has turned a projected $5.6 trillion 10-year surplus at the end of the Clinton years into a nearly $3 trillion deficit– including the four worst deficits in the history of America. The nation’s debt ceiling has been raised four times in just five years to more than $8.9 trillion. Nearly half of our nation’s record debt is owned by foreign countries including China and Japan. Without a return to fiscal discipline, the foreign countries that make our computers, our clothing and our toys will soon be making our foreign policy. Deficit spending is not just a fiscal problem – it’s a national security issue as well.

Our New Direction is committed to “Pay As You Go” budgeting – no more deficit spending.

http://www.americanthinker.com/2012/01/chicago_political_turf_war_heats_up.html

Like a lot of suburban kids, David Koschman wanted to get a taste of Rush Street, Chicago’s fabled adult playground.
So he and four friends – all freshly turned 21 – headed downtown for a Saturday night of bar-hopping. Around 3 in the morning, they decided to call it a night.
As they were leaving Bar Chicago on Division Street that spring night in 2004, they crossed paths with three men, all about 10 years older, and a woman – a group, it turned out, with ties to some of the most powerful people in Chicago. Among the group was then-29-year-old Richard J. “R.J.” Vanecko, a nephew of Mayor [Richard M.] Daley.
According to his friends, Koschman bumped one of the men, and the two groups – both later described by a detective as “drunk” and “plastered” – began trading insults and obscenities.
The confrontation ended with a punch. Someone – the police have never said who – hit the slightly built, 5-foot, 5-inch Koschman in the face. Koschman fell backward and hit the back of his head on the street. He died 12 days later from a brain injury.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office called it homicide. No one has ever been charged.

Stolen shamelessly from someone else, but it was exactly the same thought that first crossed my mind:

“Too corrupt for a Daley? WFT?”

ProfShadow on January 9, 2012 at 6:23 PM

C’mon, it isn’t rocket science. He challenged Valerie’s authority immediately, and she hasn’t forgotten being fired by Shortshanks. Crossing Valerie is the same as crossing Michelle, and we have seen with Emmanuel and Gibbs where that ends up.

He was a dead man walking within a month of taking the job. They took all his power away some time ago, and the only purpose he served by staying was to cover up the dysfunctional management, and to try to pull in some bucks from the big business donors. Apparently he got tired of the charade.

Makes me wonder, with Rahm and Daley both disgruntled and back in Chicago, just how much effort the old Daley machine apparatus they control will put behind Zero’s re-election. I doubt either would be sorry to see Valerie, Michelle and Barry tossed out of the White House in November. Rahm is probably laying bets with Blago on how high they bounce.

novaculus on January 9, 2012 at 6:29 PM

Jack Lew is a religious Jew. I bet part of this is to help convince Jews, who are concerned about Obama’s lack of support for Israel, to vote for Obama.

Publius24 on January 9, 2012 at 6:35 PM

Nothing is too corrupt for a Daley, but it sure would be interesting to hear John Wyma’s input. Wyma did some “negotiating” between Rahm, Val & Co. and an ex-governor/convicted felon about a certain senate seat that was for sale. Of course they all worked for the Daley Machine. The wiretaps? The tapes? There won’t be any Daley going under the bus anytime soon. So who is it going to be?

MayorDaley on January 9, 2012 at 6:58 PM

Daley left because his appointment was always only temporary due to the agreement that his brother would back off and let Rahm be mayor. A short stint as COS promotes his stature in Dem-controlled Illinois and will ensure him plenty of clients.

Daley is returning to a Chicago that is on its way to becoming another Detroit. Wildings by black youth are almost daily events in the Loop and Magnificent Mile. Gang assaults, blatantly committed on the streets and in the prime shopping areas like Water Tower Place are killing tourism. Conventions are cancelling in droves thanks to the Dem-controlled unions strangling McCormick place. No extra cops are being assigned to control the flash mobs and Rahm has the MSM firmly in his grasp; they rarely report on the attacks. The police department headed by a clownish TV-star wannabe from New York, budgeted for 13,000 officers, now has less than 9300 on the rolls. The former mayor sold every revenue producing source that wasn’t nailed down and now Rahm is busy dismantling as many city services as possible in order to find more money to hand out to cronies and to puff up his power base.

Make no mistake about it: Rahm will firmly back Obama because another win for Obie puts Rahm in the catbird seat to run for Governor or Senate and then President. He is a ruthless egotist devoid of humanity; a truly evil man who seeks power for personal gain.

In short, Rahm is the sort of political powermeister The One imagines himself to be.

As for Daley, he has “Chicago Machine” written all over his face.

Going back to Chicago to run The One’s re-election campaign is a good news/bad news deal.

Good news for The One, in that he’s got it in the hands of somebody who knows the turf, can play a vicious ground game, and most importantly knows where everybody else’s bodies are buried.

Bad news for His Immensity in that he apparently needs that level of pull in place, in a state that should be in his column like Arkansas was in Bill Clinton’s. If Obama thinks he needs Daley in charge in Chicago, before the primaries, that indicates Illinois may be in play even then, let alone in the general election.

Which is not good news for Obama.

Nobody likes working with tyrants who are prone to tantrums, it doesn’t matter if it’s a low paying clerical or factory job, or a high paying public job, if your bosses are jerks, you’re not gonna be happy there.

Exit question: Why does The One keep losing chiefs of staff?

I suspect that the First Battle Axe and Harry Reid were big factors.
Let’s not forget that Daley can now get a do-nothing job on the board of XYZ Corp. and be paid an enormous amount of money for “access” to the White House.

Saaaaay … Isn’t that what Dems are always saying about Republicans?

Holy crap…I thought I was the only one who read the Ulsterman Report. A lot of people think it’s junk (I try to keep an open mind), but his “Insiders” have been pretty much dead on.

The “WH Insider” paints a REALLY pathetic picture of Obama’s WH.

I read it because so many things have come out to be true. I was skeptical at first but not any more.

Chicago, Illinois. The city so nice they say it with vice.

Jazz, this is, without question, the absolute BEST definition of Chicago I have ever seen!

This one deserves its own bumper sticker!

Let’s see; Daley is white, Irish and a Catholic. Hm. That means Michelle Obama is a racist, bigot and an anti-religionist.

Mr. President. Your wife’s powder whig and penciled mole parties are going to get leaked if she doesn’t stop.

Barack Obama is a tool of the banking class. He’s a tool of the you know who’s. The you know whos fear christian power more than they fear muslim power. They wouldn’t mind it if the christians finished off their muslim enemies. They must believe Christians are total tools. By the looks of things, they’re right.

I wonder if Daley left because he finished covering up the scandals and can’t be in the employ of the boss when the requests to appear start showing up. As a private citizen he’ll have that extra legal firewall. Criminally corrupt assholes is what we are dealing with here.
