Video: Tebowmania

posted at 9:58 pm on January 9, 2012 by Allahpundit

We’re 25 hours late with this, but oh well. It’s still newsy for the three readers who haven’t yet seen the game-ending TD in endless rotation on ESPN today.

Can you root for Tebow if you’re not a believer? I do, but his religious identity is so key to his persona that it feels odd to endorse Tebow the player without endorsing Tebow the evangelist. It’s like listening to gospel music: You don’t need to believe in order to enjoy it, but if you don’t then you’re relating to the material in a completely different way than most devotees. I like him because I like underdogs and because he plays with heart even though he’s far from being a top-tier QB — far enough, I think, that he probably won’t be a starter for long. But he’s a phenomenon right now and that’s always fun in sports, especially when it involves underdogs. Having the Broncos in the Super Bowl would be insane. Here’s hoping.

As for all the 3:16 coincidences — and there are more of them than you think — I’m unimpressed. Although if Brady throws for 666 yards next week then, admittedly, I’ll have to rethink some things.

Elway is going to have to swallow his pride and mentor him. Heh.

gophergirl on January 9, 2012 at 10:48 PM

Hope Elway does, I’ve always had much respect for him, a really great QB. And, Gary Kubiak, my Texans coach, coached Elway back then when he, too, was at Denver.

TXUS on January 9, 2012 at 10:58 PM

I know which particular game they DIDN’T win in the last decade. And so do you.

The Pats haven’t won since XXXIX back in 2005, yet they still talk like they win every year.

Good Solid B-Plus on January 9, 2012 at 10:58 PM

Today Rush was referencing Denver mgmt. not liking Tebow much. Could someone clue me in on why the dislike and why did they hire him in the first place?

arnold ziffel on January 9, 2012 at 10:30 PM

The coach who drafted/believed in Tebow got fired (Josh McDaniels who now works for the Pats) and replaced by John Fox and Elway was brought in. It was the classic case of Fox/Elway wanting to put their own mark/spin on the team with Elway during training camp demoting Tebow to 4th string. The Tebow haters were also trying to hype up a story Quinn would get the start over Tebow in the playoffs. Any football fan could do the job and earn the pay of all these so called football analysts: just yell your opinion as loud as you can.
The other ‘analysts’ point I’m sick off is besides “he can’t play” is the ones who are uncomfortable with his religion like to say to ones who are fine with it “what if Tebow was a muslim would you still be so accepting?” The question I always have is if it was a muslim or some other religion would the people who have elliptic fits of rage over ‘Tebowing on the field’ be made ‘uncomfortable’ about that? No, because the last thing they would want is to be called intolerant, unless it’s by conservatives and then it’s a badge of pride.
I hoping to see a orange horsies stampede all the way to a superbowl victory, and the rabid critics jumping off the roofs of buildings fallout afterwards.

Judge Dredd on January 9, 2012 at 10:59 PM

Just another day in the Patriots Dynasty. One of their coaches takes another job and they not only don’t lose the guy for the playoff run, they add another, younger, better coach. A coach who was the architect of their offense. The one who not only coached the most prolific offense in NFL history, but who got 11 wins out of Matt Cassel. A coach who scouted, drafted and mentored Denver and Tebow, and who this year already has gameplanned against Pittsburgh, Baltimore, New Orleans and San Francisco twice. Nope. Move along. Nothing to see here.

Zetterson on January 9, 2012 at 10:56 PM

They’re not a dynasty anymore. Winning 3 out of 4 was a dynasty. You don’t get to take 7 years off and then re-claim the “dynasty” mantle.

Good Solid B-Plus on January 9, 2012 at 11:00 PM

I’d give crrr6′s left arm for a Denver win. Go Tebow.

Perry is no Tebow, sorry “cult-of-personality-types.
Perry is not Chuck Norris either, sorry.

Before I get ripped to shreds by the hypersensitive Perry gang let me just say that Buddy Roemer is no Tebow either, although Buddy is doing better in NH (:

Frobenius on January 9, 2012 at 11:00 PM

Yeah, and the Pats have never choked in a pressure situation, eh? 19-0!

Tebow already has the highest QB Rating for a Bronco QB in the playoffs in their history. Yes, higher than any Elway game.

Good Solid B-Plus on January 9, 2012 at 10:55 PM

I don’t talk about that game. That game never happened.

Zetterson on January 9, 2012 at 11:00 PM

arnold ziffel on January 9, 2012 at 10:30 PM

Elway and Fox didn’t draft him. Neither were with the team two years ago when McDaniels (who oddly enough became the incoming offensive coordinator for the Patriots this week) drafted him in the first round against pretty much the entire world’s advice.

Good Solid B-Plus on January 9, 2012 at 11:00 PM

Sure, there has been a gap in years since their last Super Bowl win but, come on, they have been an absolute NFL powerhouse contending for the grand prize every year. The organization is so well run that they started to make other teams sweat with Matt Castle as QB! And who knows what would have come from that team had Brady been at the helm? Perhaps a 4th championship over hte course of a decade? And then there were other years when they fell 1-2 wins short of winning it all. One improbable reception from the Giants doesn’t happen (that ball gets dropped 99 times out of 100) and we are talking 5 championships in 10 years. For most organizations that would be a fine accomplishment if there were only 3 teams in the entire NFL. This Patriots team/organization is most definitely a dynasty.

Zetterson on January 9, 2012 at 11:11 PM

The Patriots have beaten one playoff team all year. Just one. The 8win/8loss Broncos. That is to say – they haven’t shown shit all year. Big numbers against crappy teams. I grew up in Massachusetts a life long Sox, Bruins, Celtics, and Patriots fan. But three things – moving out of Massachusetts, the recent success of all four teams (the Bruins win was sweet!) and the obnoxiousness of Boston sports fans – I’m to the point I can’t root for these teams knowing so many arrogant, liberal douchebags love running smack about them.

Bishop on January 9, 2012 at 11:36 PM

Funny how Matt Ryan is considered an elite QB, but has lost 3 strait play off games, yet Tebow is a scrub that wins his first play off.

I am pretty sure Matt Ryan will eventually win a play off, maybe more, and wish him nothing but luck. The media are the ones who hate Tebow, and try to rationalize Denver’s victories in spite of Tebow.

Pittsburgh flat out had no respect for Tebow and got burned big time by him. In 1999 Dan Reeves thought the same of John Elway and Elway Demolished the Falcons’ secondary in the Super Bowl. You better give a man his due.

I’m a member of the “Atheists for Tebow” club. I love that guy, namely because he makes liberals and evangelicals absolutely freak out while it seems he’s just sort of bobbing along, blissfully unaware of the insanity that travels in his wake. He’s a likable guy, he’s an intense competitor and generally a good teammate (at least it seems that way), but every time people start to get comfortable with dismissing him he does something crazy like pass for 300 yards against the best defense in the league in the playoffs.

He’s the Sidney Poitier of the theater of the absurd and it’s impossible to not root for his next twist.

galenrox on January 9, 2012 at 11:54 PM

He reminds me of one of those fastball pitchers who’s “effectively wild.” He throws some beauties, like the 30 yard strike for his first touchdown. And his misses are bad enough that the secondary often isn’t prepared to get their hands on it. Best case scenario: he ends up being a poor man’s Michael Vick (and Michael Vick is a poor man’s Cam Newton).

I don’t even care about his outspoken Christianity. There are a dozen guys who are just as in-your-face, including some of my favorite players. They just didn’t happen to win the Heisman and play for national champions. It does bug me that he gets all the credit for his team winning when he’s not even the best player on the Bronco’s offense (that would be one Willis McGahee). The Broncos are an above average team that got off to a bad start. What they did was no more exceptional than John Skelton and the Cardinals finishing with the same record after an even worse start.

You seem to forget that in one of those years after 2005, the Patriots lost their Quarterback for the season in the very first game.

They finished that season at 11-5 without him. Only reason they didn’t make the playoffs was because of the tie breakers.

Has anyone mentioned the Phillipians 46-7 reference yet? Another passage(s) number he would sometimes put on his eye blackouts in college was: Phil 46-7.

Until the game last night there were 46 quarterbacks who’ve thrown for exactly 316 yards. He became the 47th.

Take that you number coincidence junkies…

I went the opposite direction – grew up in New England area and came out to Colorado with the Air Force and stayed for 30 years. I’ve stuck with the Patriots over the years, but have also turned into a Broncos fan. I had a heck of a time when the Red Sox and Rockies met in the World Series – my Mom sending Red Sox shirts on me and the wife threatening that I better not wear them. I’ll have a tough time with the game this weekend – but most likely cheering for the Broncos this time.

I don’t care about Tebow’s religion – as a QB it’s all about what he does on the field. I didn’t think he would be a good choice for starting QB this soon because he initially did not pass very well. He has definitely gotten better. Gotta give him credit for his part in the playoff win, and he does show great leadership and inspirational skills – but the defense has kept them in the games they’ve won.

inspectorudy on January 10, 2012 at 1:19 AM

Here you go matey

excerpt:

Now, let’s look at this: Tim Tebow, the most polarizing figure in sports. It is manifestly untrue. There’s nothing polarizing about Tebow. What is “polarizing,” if anything, is the reporting on Tebow. What’s “polarizing” is the media saying — alleging, accusing, whatever — various things about Tebow. “He can’t play! He’s too much oriented to God! His throwing motion is way too long! He can never be a pocket passer,” all of these things. In fact, everything that they said he couldn’t do he did yesterday — and he did it against the league’s number one defense, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Everything they said he couldn’t do, he did. There’s nothing polarizing. Everybody in Denver loves him. Except for some of the Broncos management.

tom daschle concerned on January 10, 2012 at 1:22 AM

“Can you root for Tebow if you’re not a believer? I do, but his religious identity is so key to his persona that it feels odd to endorse Tebow the player without endorsing Tebow the evangelist. It’s like listening to gospel music: You don’t need to believe in order to enjoy it, but if you don’t then you’re relating to the material in a completely different way than most devotees.”

– That analogy doesn’t track. Tebow’s not playing “Christian” football, he’s a Christian who plays football. So you’re not listening to gospel music, you’re listening to a gospel singer performing a pop song.

No one gets banned anymore-you know that.
Now it’s all about the hits.

annoyinglittletwerp on January 9, 2012 at 11:37 PM

That’s capitalism… He has to pay the bills! However, there is an alternate business model which doesn’t rely on hits, and could, therefore, fulfill your requirements for conformity: Paid subscription.
Ed can figure out his costs; add a reasonable profit margin; estimate subscriber base (perhaps by polling the existing registered commenters); then, set his fee accordingly. Your paid subscription will entitle you to vote on policy matters (as is the case on any other club); and the financial expense will make trolls and dissenters less likely to join.

KOOLAID2 on January 10, 2012 at 1:36 AM

It’s Tebow/Broncos Mania here in our house. Go Tebow!!! What a fabulous game!

This is the most excitement we’ve had since Elway retired. My husband and youngest son were at the game and couldn’t talk when they got home, from all the yelling. It was so loud in the stadium that they couldn’t hear each other.

My husband has been a true blue Broncos fan his entire life. He knows all their games, stats, players, etc. He can’t remember where he left his keys or wallet, but ask him about any game and he can tell you about it, plus where he was and who he was with when he watched it. He has been having so much fun since Tebow took over as QB.

I hope they keep the momentum going and beat New England. Since most of their wins were on the road, we’re hoping that they’ll pull through.

Tebow is a wonderful kid, a hard worker, and seems to be an inspirational leader for the team.

Common Sense on January 10, 2012 at 1:36 AM

On Sunday, Tebow passed for 316 yards and averaged 31.6 yards per pass.
