Video: Mother with a gun

posted at 9:15 pm on January 6, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Fox News Insider, drop what you’re doing and spend four minutes having your mind blown by the preternatural poise of a teen mom confronted in her home by a would-be killer. I’ve read a bunch of stories this week about what happened to her, including Rich Lowry’s piece today at NRO (from which I’m stealing the headline), but nothing will prepare you for hearing her explain in her own words how coolly she assessed the situation. Bear in mind, she’s 18 years old, her husband died of cancer just one week earlier, and she had not one but two lunatics attempting to break down her door and do who knows what. And yet: “I knew if I screamed I would give my position away in the house. And I wanted to see him first.” Unbelievable.

Exit quotation: “Female participation in target shooting in the U.S. has nearly doubled in the last decade, growing to nearly five million women since 2001.”

First, I support her 100%. But what I can’t piece together is that she was on the phone to 911 for a long time before she had to shoot. Where were the police during all that time? Does she live way out in the boondocks or something?
parke on January 6, 2012 at 9:42 PM

She lived outside of Tuttle which is southwest of OK City. If she lived in the boonies, which I believe she did, it could have taken them a while to get there. Some of the roads there are still dirt, and I’m not talking gravel. I mean plain old dirt roads; not much more than trails in some cases. I used to work the oilfields there, and it can take some time to get from one place to another.

Yup, no matter where a person lives it’s as the Boy Scouts say, “Be prepared.” The police do a fine job, but you have to be ready to defend yourself.

The facts show that she was above the age of consent in Oklahoma when the child was conceived, i.e. she was over age sixteen.

Therefore, for purposes of consenting to sexual intercourse, she was a “consenting adult” by Oklahoma law.

The fans would love to show her some love and appreciation.

Sarah Palin has weighed in on this and fully supports this young woman. She said she expects her daughters to act accordingly if they are ever confronted with a threat like this young woman. I hope this young woman has a family support group nearby. Imagine, 18, a recent widow, brand new baby, and dealing with this horror alone.

Makes me want to move her into my house and help her raise her baby. Or at least give her a hug.

Ms McKinley had kept the 12-gauge gun with which she shot Martin, as well as a pistol, after selling the rest of her husband’s guns to help pay for his funeral.

Mr McKinley had taught her how to shoot, she said. Though he was 40 years her senior, she says she’s not ashamed she married him. ‘I still love him with everything I am,’ she said

pseudonominus on January 6, 2012 at 10:16 PM

Not sure I understand. Because her husband was 58 we can’t admire her actions?

She is not a “little girl.” She handled herself better than many women twice her age would have been able to.

I probably would have shot him too, if I were her, if I had the courage. Shot him dead. It would also be a message to others who thought about breaking into my trailer. Don’t try it!

But you think you know this story? You ever read a story in a newspaper that you have personal knowledge of? Chances are they got a bunch of it wrong. I suspect that here too.

Paul-Cincy on January 6, 2012 at 10:02 PM

I don’t care what the “story” is, as I said before, it doesn’t matter. Should she have hesitated and said: no I can’t shoot this intruder because of my personal situation?

Do you have any idea how insane that sounds?

You-Eh-Vee on January 6, 2012 at 10:21 PM

A few years back, my brother, his wife and their two young daughters were awakened by the sound of a deranged homeless man, with a long history of substance abuse and mental illness, ranting incoherently and pounding on doors and windows, trying to break into their house. Arming himself with his SIG Sauer 9mm, my brother locked his wife and daughters in the bedroom, called 911, and waited for the cops to arrive.

It took the sheriff’s deputies 45 minutes to arrive. (It turns out they had gotten lost and found themselves stuck behind a locked gate on a neighbor’s private property).

As they say, when seconds count, the police are minutes away.

By the time the deputies finally arrived, my brother had already confronted the crazy dirtbag at gunpoint and proned him out to prevent him from smashing a sliding glass door with a rock. Apparently, the view down the muzzle of that SIG was about the best anti-psychotic medicine in the world; as soon as he saw it, the bum immediately regained his faculties, dropped the rock and started begging not to be shot. When the deputies took him into custody, he was docile as a kitten.

As happens so often, the mere presence of the firearm allowed my brother to take control of the situation without firing a shot. If he hadn’t been armed, God knows what would have happened. (The deputies found a large knife on the bum when they searched him).

As Jackie Mason once opined, anyone who is in favor of gun control is a f***** moron.

Life is complicated. Guy is dead, by all rights justified, but to me, sad. You can be sad about the loss of life, even when it’s justified. The 18 year old may have emotional trauma because of what happened.

This was a complicated event. Simple stories are for children.

The response by others in support of her actions, however over the top some of them may seem, are helpful. When you had no alternative, it really helps you live with it to have others recognize it.

In all instances, the statutory age under which a victim is legally incapable of consenting to sexual intercourse.

OUJI-CR 4-138

You are instructed that as a matter of law a minor under the age of fourteen/sixteen is incapable of giving consent/agreement to engaging in sexual conduct which is otherwise prohibited by law and the agreement/consent of such minor to such activity should be disregarded by you in determining the question of the defendant’s guilt.

preternatural poise of a teen mom confronted in her home by a would-be killer

She reminds me a lot of Ashley Smith, who I also admired greatly, who talked the Atlanta cop killer and spree killer Brian Nichols down so he’d give himself up. Smith was described as having “infinite poise”. Her husband had died recently, in a drug-related dispute, and Ashley herself was a recovering meth addict. The stories on her never mentioned this, but it struck me she might have taken meth when dealing with Nichols, helping her maintain her “poise”. You want to believe one thing, while the truth of a situation is usually something different. It’s like the descriptions of Medal of Honor winner actions, or of firefights during battle. The journalists often get it wrong, sometimes way wrong.

Great way to go date wise, everyone is festive, its what I like about being born the day after Christmas. We celebrate our anniversary on the 4th of July, same thing fireworks and everyone, well except for the libs, is happy happy.

Bmore on January 6, 2012 at 10:43 PM

There was similar story last year where a woman was on the phone with 911 for quite awhile as a crazy guy was breaking down her door. When the guy broke through, the woman shot him with her shotgun. It was all on the 911 recording. She didn’t have a baby though.

juliesa on January 6, 2012 at 10:43 PM

Good for her but why on God’s green earth was she married to a 58-year-old with whom she had been living for three years. That is just wrong.

txag92 on January 6, 2012 at 9:37 PM

She’ll most likely be getting SS checks for a good long time.

whatcat on January 6, 2012 at 10:41 PM

Yeah, people calling themselves Conservative arguing in FAVOR of the molestation of 9th graders by senior citizens IS pretty ironic.

I agree.

KMC1 on January 6, 2012 at 10:45 PM

It does not detract from this specific awesome action on this girls behalf, but admit it folks, if it was a 58 year old Hollywood actor marrying a teenager you’d be tarring and feathering them here in the comments section for its creepiness.

Boomer_Sooner on January 6, 2012 at 10:45 PM

He approached her with a knife. In most any state that is grounds for a self defense shooting–on the streets, in a parking lot, or your own land.
juliesa on January 6, 2012 at 10:40 PM

Grounds or not, guy pulls a knife – the next step doesn’t involve a whole lot of legal research.

whatcat on January 6, 2012 at 10:45 PM

You do realize YOU are the one arguing that a senior citizen should be able to have sex with a 9th grader, right?!?!?!

KMC1 on January 6, 2012 at 10:41 PM

No, you are arguing that. Using the timelines in the articles provided, she could have been as old as seventeen when they were married. Or, as young as fifteen. You chose to ignore the subject of the story to harp on something you know nothing about. You know nothing about the people involved. Yet argue yourself as “holier than thou” from your pulpit of ignorance.

cozmo on January 6, 2012 at 10:46 PM

It is a little unusual that they were so far apart in age, but it looks like the guys in her neighborhood in her age group are real “winners” so maybe it’s not all that hard to understand.

bitsy on January 6, 2012 at 10:47 PM

So she’s a very mature 18 year old woman, she seems smart, and she’s pretty. I can see why he was attracted to her.

And maybe she was tired of dealing with young stupid meth heads who were going nowhere in life and decided a mature man would be better for her future.

Besides, the guy married her. He obviously wasn’t out to just boink a young hot teenager. There had to be something there for him to want to make it legit.

I dated a 58 year old man when I was 18. It didn’t work out. Turns out I really was too immature for him. But I liked him and respected him and to this day (23 years later) we are still good friends.

juliesa on January 6, 2012 at 10:43 PM

I remember that. The guy was on drugs, deranged, and seemed headed towards killing her. The 911 operator told her to retreat to the bathroom. She said, no way, not with a shotgun, with no room to maneuver. I thought she made a very good choice. And the guy broke thru the sliding door glass and she killed him. The guy was out of his mind on drugs. Not necessarily bad or evil. He didn’t know what he was doing. Deranged. And he was violent. So she did what she had to do.

Paul-Cincy on January 6, 2012 at 10:49 PM

txag92 on January 6, 2012 at 9:37 PM

yeah, it would have been much better if she was married to an OWSer who thought guns were “icky” and babies were “punishment.”

I think the age difference is pretty weird myself, but I’m not going to pass judgment on her, or him, in these circumstances. Take it up with Oklahoma. It’s their law. I don’t know how long they “dated” before marrying, but if it was less than two years then it was legal by that state’s law.

Harping constantly on that is merely an attempt to steer the conversation away from the bravery that this young lady displayed, which is the goal of some here, IMO>

txag92 on January 6, 2012 at 9:37 PM

Yeah, I’ve got a problem with how old she was when she allegedly started living with him but as soon as she turned legal age, 16 in OK, it became none of our business. And, listening to her very cool and articulate conversation with 911 and in the Shepard Smith interview, this is very mature individual. That may well have been her reasoning in choosing to be with a much older man, those of her age range being “immature” in her mind.

Whatever, we do know this: at age 18, she made the right decision to kill an intruder who was endangering her child, and dispatched him straight away and with no regret.

The damndest thing, according to my husband the hospice nurse, is that there probably weren’t any drugs there if the guy died at home. My husband has to (in one local county with the cops watching) destroy all medicines before he can even leave once he has pronounced a patient dead.

If there is anything off about the circumstances, I’m sure it will come out…I know in the DM article (I KNOW, the Daily Mail!!), there was a picture of a couch, and the caption said something bout the dead guy being found on the couch…I was not sure if the couch had been in the house (it was pictured outside), or if it had been thrown out and he died after stumbling out there…just some things that made me go, hmmm…of course the media is usually so sloppy in reporting so it’s hard to take anything at face value…but I’ve been burned by believing stories that seem too good to be true in the past (Jessica Lynch), so I always maintain some healthy skepticism…in any case, I’m glad she was able to protect her baby and herself, and I hope that there is nothing more to the story than meets the eye…this makes me a bit more receptive to perhaps some day learning ho to use a gun!
