Video: Jon Huntsman, Manchurian candidate?

posted at 5:09 pm on January 6, 2012 by Allahpundit

No wonder Massachusetts’s biggest paper endorsed him. Zing.

You make the call: Depressing proof of how far some of Paul’s fringiest supporters will go or a false-flag operation designed to make Paul look bad and/or create sympathy for Huntsman? The Paul campaign denounced the clip today as “disgusting” and the candidate himself said this of whoever put it together:

“Of course I disavow him and he shouldn’t do it, because you have one out of how many, a couple hundred thousand, five hundred thousand, I don’t know how many people we have, because one does that, to bring that up just doesn’t sound like a fair thing to do,” Paul said. “Of course I denounce it, I couldn’t even hear it, haven’t looked at it, but people do that, and they do it in all campaigns.”

Paul continued, “So obviously I just disavow him and try to go on and do the thing I’m supposed to do.”

I’ll let you write your own punchline about mysterious authors publishing offensive material on Paul’s behalf. There is a chance, of course, that this really is a false-flag production: Even for a racist appeal, it’s almost comically crude and stupid, especially the photoshop of Huntsman as Mao at the end. You’d have to be a true imbecile, and truly paranoid about Chinese infiltration, not to realize that you’re doing more damage to Paul in posting it than to your alleged target. Plus, if the goal is to raise doubts about Huntsman, why even bother tacking Paul’s name on to the end? Just go about your business of smearing JH and leave no fingerprints. As it is, not only is Paul’s name mentioned in the video, it’s mentioned in the name of the YouTube account too — an account which has uploaded this one clip and nothing else, ever. I’m not saying one of his fans didn’t do it — anyone who enjoyed the “edgier” parts of those newsletters could be capable — but I don’t know how to say definitively that one of them did. Anything can happen on YouTube.

Exit quotation from Huntsman: “What I object to is bringing forward pictures and videos of my adopted daughters and suggesting there is some sinister motive there. I have a daughter from China who was abandoned at two months of age in a vegetable market, picked up by the police and sent to an orphanage. No future, no hope, nothing to look forward to. Now she’s in my family, and she’s one of the greatest human beings I’ve ever known. She’s also, at 12 years old, my senior foreign policy adviser.”

Uh-oh. Looks like Santorum and Romney have some “disavowing” to do as well.

My God! How DARE that man represent our nation with dignity when the opposition is in power? How DARE he be a respected symbol of the great nation state of America and be an incredibly popular public figure in a semi-hostile nation. Traitor!

Sadly, the kind of thinking that you’re mocking is far too common these days.

He represents American interests not a particular president, party, or ideology. When filling a role of state one almost never (in Modern times at least) has a hand in policy. America is a rare example in which you have blended head of state and head of government in the office of the president but there are still officials of state that are not officials of the executive. Ambassador is one of those roles.

Yes, a president can recall an ambassador but this rarely happens in practice unless they are an utter Tmbarrassment, cause a public scandal, or otherwise daily to serve with honor (And sometimes not even then…). there is also a very (millennia) long history of ambassadors as quasi-independent agents that represent the nation rather than the individual that appointed them. (Originally due to slow communication but for a wider variety of other reasons as time went on.)

Some of the presidential and state dept. fights with American ambassadors in Vietnam (before and during the war) are a good example of this.

What is this nonsense?

If this were a false flag, no one would be dumb enough to create accounts claiming to be from each of the different campaigns which would obviously indicate a false flag. Now someone is just trying to smear Huntsman.

I still fail to see what anyone finds so “offensive” about this. It called him un-American. Big whoop. Other than that, it was a big nothing.

No, what it’s suggesting is that he’s some sort of Chinese agent. But I agree, it’s really stupid. Does anyone anywhere think speaking Chinese is proof that you’re a communist?

Allahpundit on January 6, 2012 at 5:27 PM

However much money and time was spent on creating this ‘spot’, it was far too much (of both). It’s a meaningless, foolish waste of time spot, it’s bizarre as much as it’s wasteful, especially since, politically, why would Paul want to malign Huntsman?

What I got from this spot was that Huntsman is a loving father.

And, hey, by the way, did you know he speaks Mandarin?

That’s about it but plastered with Paul’s name (and wonky political-conspiracy suggestion), it comes off as saying that Paul’s the Crazy Old Guy You Wondered If He Was.

This is really a silly debate you’re trying to have. From one of the State Department’s own publications (you can find instances of this same sort of thing all over the place):

The U.S. Department of State manages America’s relationships with foreign
governments, international organizations, and the people of other countries. The management of all of these relationships is called diplomacy. State Department diplomats carry out the President’s foreign policy and help build a more free, prosperous, and secure world.

Now, I know that our State dpartment is nothing but a bunch of retards who can’t even get a correct translation of one simple word into a language that we had to spy in, intensely, for over half a century … but you’ll find that pretty much everyone says the above – because it’s trivially true and obvious.

I understand what you drive at but ambassadors are personal prelatures of the president. It’s a state office.

An ambassadorial position is largely a sinecure with responsibilities of state representation. (Dinners, parties, social and cultural functions. Etc.) They usually don’t even sign agreements or treaties. Sometimes they function as spies of a very public sort but it usually isn’t considered polite to mention that. (Most of his calendar as ambassador is public. A LOT of folk dancing there but not a lot of labor for the state department.)

Still, they represent and serve our nation. This can be done with honor even under opposition.

It even has the timbre of a Paulbot hit. I doubt Paul had anything to do with this directly, but this kind of craziness matches the intensity of some of his supporters.

But, with that thought in mind, I’m wondering why Huntsman gave up the Governorship of Utah to shill for Obama on the world stage?

I mean, his stands are all standard conservative fair, maybe even a bit toward red meat, but he gets no traction because everyone thinks he must be a RINO for accepting that ambassadorship.

When an alleged supporter of Ron Paul does something, it’s Paul’s fault. When an alleged supporter of any other candidate does something, it doesn’t get mentioned.

It’s the same as when racists would show up at Tea Party events. Or the anarchists in Oakland’s occupy protests. It’s low-brow “journalism.”

gyrmnix on January 6, 2012 at 8:37 PM

gyrmnix You have that right. I am not a supporter of Ron Paul for my own reasons, not because any of the adds or statements by his opponents. I will say this, I have watched Ron Paul thru three runs for the Whitehouse and never have I seen him or his supports run such a trashy and ridiculous add. This was perpetrated by someone without his knowledge. I was very pleased for Ron Paul to come out as quickly as he did and denounce the add, he does have Christian Values.

I will bet $10,000 that the Jon Huntsman campaign created and posted this video knowing that they had media interviews lined up in the coming days before the NH primary.

The videos and pictures used of the family probably aren’t that easy to get a hold of. The video is obviously ridiculous and incriminates Ron Paul. It’s the only video by the user and it’s posted on January 4th. The first activity recorded in the youtube video statistics refers to jon2012 dot com. It’s the only website linked to it in the first 24 hours. Later that day on the 4th, Piers Morgan has Ron Paul on with Jon Huntsman to tease him about the tweet heard round the world. Jon says nothing of the video, even though his website has already been linked to it. Later, he and Piers joke that his jon2012 girls should go after Ron and Piers says he’s been hearing something about that.

The next day, January 5th, Redstate and Wonkette have the video on their blogs and the video goes viral. All of them blaming the Paul campaign for the ugly ad. Jon and his daughters are ALL OVER the news media and in print saying how horrible the Paul campaign is, even though his campaign has disavowed it and said they didn’t do it.

Why is an obvious fraud like this paraded around every news outlet in America? Guess the powers that be had to smear Ron Paul before another vote gets cast in his favor.

Bill Hicks on January 7, 2012 at 2:01 AM

OH NOES! HE KNOWS THE LANGUAGE OF ONE OF AMERICA’S LARGEST COMPETITORS!

Crap like this never makes sense to me. Kevin Rudd, for all his faults, actually did quite a bit of good by knowing both the Chinese language and their culture. Just like poker, you want as many ‘tells’ as possible..

Reaps on January 7, 2012 at 7:11 AM

It smells like false flag to me. Not becaue i don’t believe that his supporters are capable of such hijinx – that girl who scratched a backwards ‘b’ in he cheek and claimed it was a pro-obama hate crime came to the mccain campaign only after being kicked out of paul’s hq for similar tactics. This just seems to fall a little too squarely into the “lookit what wingnuts believe” brand of lefty smears. Consider for instance henry reynolds’”kkk for thompson”site site, emily waters’ fake teaparty-themed joseph stack facebook page or the infamous “gays for giuliani” and “real balls” hoaxes from 2008.

Then, i often find my self wondering along these lines…

You’d have to be a true imbecile…, not to realize that you’re doing more damage to Paul in posting it than to your alleged target.

…when considering some conservative oppo efforts i know to be genuine.

eh on January 7, 2012 at 8:05 AM

In light of bill hicks’ comment above, it’s worth noting that the “real balls” hoax was designed by its lefty author to be taken as a false-flag from mccain against giuliani. So don’t be so eager to swallow the bait.

eh on January 7, 2012 at 8:12 AM

@gyrminx

There has never been any corroborating evidence that the infamous “mccain has a black lovechild” robocalls ever existed. Only mccain’s campaign manager’s claim that he had been allerted to such calls by an unnamed person at a constituent event.

It has the ‘hand wringing lily types’ with their panties in a wad—that alone makes the video great!

But wait! there’s more:

A.) Huntsman gets pimped on all the ego-arrogant stuff he is throwing out on America (about time he got pimped)

B.) His daughters dished out several mocking videos at the other GOP candidates (Huntsman thought this was fine and dandy), but now HE can’t take it ?

I read parts of the Book of Mormon, but not every laborious page after page. It is too difficult for me to read it from cover to cover because most of it is pretty ridiculous. I was impressed though with the imagination of Joseph Smith. If he were alive today, I am sure he could earn big bucks in Hollywood as screenwriter for Disney. But, uh, I have a good understanding of what Mormons believe. I have researched the necessary information to understand what Mormonism teaches. Thank you so much.

Whoever is involved in this video is a disgusting low life. The Huntsmans had enough love and concern to take these children into their family and give them a loving home.

Fourteen years ago my husband and I adopted two wonderful Russian orphans. The reason we went overseas to adopt was because back in 1997 there were several high profile cases of adoptions being overturned. Some group was encouraging birthmothers who had signed away their parental rights to come forward with some guy who claimed to be the father and claim that he was never notified about the adoption and thus had never signed away his parental rights. My husband and I didn’t want any part of a dispute like that so we went overseas to Russian orphanages where things like this don’t happen.

Our children have been raised as US citizens and they act more American than a lot of other kids we have known.
