Chris Matthews to DWS: What I really want to know is, will Obama drop Biden for Clinton?

posted at 7:45 pm on January 4, 2012 by Tina Korbe

Chris Matthews hasn’t been happy with President Barack Obama — and he’s kept up no pretenses that he is. The thrill is long gone. Now, it looks like he, like other Democrats and members of the press, wants to recapture that thrill with a little switch to the ticket. At least, he made a point to grill Debbie Wasserman Schultz about it yesterday. The Weekly Standard reports:

Likewise, on MSNBC, Chris Matthews asked the DNC chair: “Do you think it’s going to be the same ticket this time, Obama and Biden?”

“Oh, absolutely,” Wasserman Schultz told the liberal television host.

Matthews interjected: “Did you ever get those assurances from the president? Has he ever said it to anyone?”

“Throughout the president’s entire campaign organization, throughout the leadership of political folks attached to the president, I know, I’m 100 percent confident that Joe Biden and Barack Obama are going to run together as a team,” Wasserman Schultz replied.

A lot of Democrats’ hearts are breaking in Arkansas right now. Seriously, though, why the ongoing fascination with this idea? Yes, her approval rating has been consistently and remarkably high — but that’s what retiring from electoral politics will do for you. Let her reappear on the public stage and her old baggage would weigh her down — plus any new negative legacy she’s acquired as Secretary of State. What are her economic credentials, anyway?

Also, Democrats don’t yet know who the Republican nominee will be, let alone the Republican vice presidential candidate. It’s possible the GOP vice presidential nominee — say a Marco Rubio or Nikki Haley — would look even better given the chance to take on Hillary Clinton in debates for no other reason than that it would be a real debate, one by which voters might actually make a determination or two about the overall ticket. This persistent pipe dream, if brought to fruition, would just serve as a powerful reminder of why it’s better to under-promise and over-deliver.

But let the chatter continue. It surely can’t enhance Biden’s confidence or, for that matter, Obama’s.

If Hillary wants to give up her fantasy of EVER being POTUS, she will not be anyone’s VP. When has a democratic VP either serving or as a candidate on the ticket, other than Truman and Lyndon Johnson(succeeding a dead POTUS) ever been elected POTUS.

Obama is stuck with Biden. Biden’s son Beau had Larry Sinclair arrested during the height of the gay sex/cocaine scandal. Biden must know something that Obama needs to keep secret. Why else would Mr. Smarty Pants pick an obvious dufus like Biden as his running mate?

So Romney won last night when he wasn’t supposed to. He’s looking more and more likely as the candidate. And today Barry’s girlfriend Chrissy is asking the head of the DNC just what in the hell Barry is going to do NOT to lose. Does he have a gimmick up his sleeve? Anything? Please? Remember, liberals always tell you who they fear.

Dr Evil on January 4, 2012 at 8:13 PM

Come on people. Why would the Dems replace Biden with anyone? The Republicans have no one of his stature to run second on their ticket. His depth of knowledge in foreign affairs and his ability to lead cannot be matched by anyone on the elephant side of the aisle.

That is, unless, there is some slim hope, that Meghan McCain steps up to the plate and takes up the mantle for her party and country.

Not all of Fox is a joke, and it’s the best we’ve got, but I stopped watching O’Reilly several years ago and only tune in when there’s a guest host like Laura Ingraham. It’s possible the GOP vice presidential nominee — say a Marco Rubio

This is a democrat talking point. The Republican party will not nominate Marco Rubio as it’s Vice Presidential candidate unless it wants to rip the United States Constitution and itself asunder.

VorDaj on January 4, 2012 at 8:58 PM

I can not even take seriously as a “conservative” website any that would keep promoting Marco Rubio for Vice President.

That’s what made me turn it off. O’Reilly wouldn’t let Santorum even finish his explanation, he kept interrupting him, seemed like he knew he actually had a good answer and didn’t want him to get a chance to say it. O’Reilly needs to learn to shut his fat mouth.

Obama has to keep Biden. It’s assassination insurance.

He figures that no one would be crazy enough to assassinate him if that meant Biden would be President.

Watching some of Biden’s statement, he might have a point.

petefrt on January 5, 2012 at 1:08 AM

Heh…I think that the only way Obama has a prayer of winning (especially if utility costs “necessarily skyrocket”) is if he picks Shillary as VP over Biden. Biden has proven himself as a doofus from hell. A Dan Quayle from the other side of the isle.

However, I really don’t see Shillary playing second fiddle to somebody who screwed/cheated her out of the nomination in 2008.

Had I known what was going to happen, I’d have voted for her in the 2008 primary. She couldn’t have been worse than the jerk we ended up with.

BHO would drop Biden for Clinton in a heartbeat. But why would HRC accept? She might accept to be positioned for a presidential run, in 2016, but she’d be almost 70 at that point. I’m not seeing it.

Deafdog on January 5, 2012 at 8:49 AM

HRC can’t run for dogcatcher. She will retire into oblivion after Nov. It’s all part of the deal she made with Zero to get out of his way in ’08. He paid off her debt and got the gig at state.
