Colmes apologizes for comment about son after Santorum and wife get emotional; Update: Video added

posted at 9:31 pm on January 2, 2012 by Allahpundit

You guys are creeping up on 500 comments in the other thread so I figured you’d want to know how the Santorums reacted.

Not well.

At a Pizza Ranch restaurant in Newton, Iowa, a member of the audience asked Santorum to react to a controversial attack leveled by liberal Fox News contributor Alan Colmes, who called the Santorum family’s approach to grieving for their dead baby boy, who lived for only two hours after his birth in 1996, “crazy.”…

[I]n Iowa this afternoon, Santorum explained that it was important for his other children to “know they had a brother.”

Santorum’s wife, Karen, who was at the event and listened to her husband talk about the experience, began to weep.

“It’s just so inappropriate,” she said as tears streamed from her eyes.

Santorum reportedly asked her at the event if she wanted to respond to Colmes. The terse reply: “No, I’d better not.” Colmes tweeted later that he spoke to Santorum by phone and that his apology was graciously accepted, which is probably sufficient to back Santorum’s political enemies off of this nasty line of attack until, oh, Super Tuesday at least. I’m looking for video of him addressing Colmes’s comments today on the trail but I can’t find anything at YouTube, CNN, or elsewhere. If you see the clip, please e-mail with a link.

Update: No video from the trail, but here’s Santorum talking about his son’s death and Colmes’s comments on “Hannity” tonight. Click the image to watch.

This may seem off-topic, but it’s not. Many leftists share very similar views. I think Colmes and Obama are of like mind. Here’s a reminder of what Obama thinks about newborn infants…

(From: The comprehensive argument against Barack Obama

posted at 11:59 pm on October 21, 2008 by Ed Morrissey)

In the clips below, you will hear Obama say three things.

First, he tells an audience that if his own daughters experienced an unexpected teen pregnancy, he wouldn’t want them “punished with a baby.”

Second, he pledges to a Planned Parenthood gathering that the very first thing he’d do as president is sign the Freedom Of Choice Act, which—according to the bill’s own supporters — would abolish bans on partial-birth abortion and parental notification laws nationwide while implementing tax-payer funded abortions. All three positions are wildly unpopular with the vast majority of Americans, yet they are Obama’s top priorities—just ask him:

Finally, Obama argues against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act as an Illinois Senator in 2002. Despite Obama’s protestations otherwise, he voted three separate times against this legislation, which was designed to require life-saving care for infants who survive botched abortions. This is a matter of record. Not only did an identical bill pass Congress without a single dissenting vote, the explanation Obama has offered for years to defend these votes has been exposed as a lie. Furthermore, Hot Air has a long list of supporting posts on this very subject:

•Infanticide, revisited
•Yes, we can … elect a guy who votes for infanticide
•There are a lot of things above Obama’s “pay grade”
•Team Obama acknowledges infanticide lie
•Obama camp: He only voted against that born-alive abortion bill because it might actually have an effect
•Obama’s support for infanticide breaks into mainstream media
•Obama: Bill unnecessarily burdened doctors with … babies; Update: AOL Hot Seat poll added
•McCarthy: Obama’s moral failing on infanticide
•Obama’s ad lies about infanticide vote

Listen to Obama complain that providing care to these accidentally-born infants would place an undue burden on the woman and her abortionist
:

Americans of good faith are divided on this issue. Many are pro-life, and many are pro-choice. Obama’s extreme record should horrify the former group, and should even give significant pause to the latter. Ask yourself, are babies “punishment”? Would you vote for the Freedom of Choice Act and against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act…three times?

TheBlueSite on January 2, 2012 at 9:54 PM

Maybe there was a chance the child could have lived and that influenced their decision.
It happens. It is their choice, and many families have chosen the same thing, religious or not.

It is absolutely none of your business.

katy the mean old lady on January 2, 2012 at 9:54 PM

It’s funny this argument is being brought up in a Rick Santorum thread.

Notorious GOP on January 2, 2012 at 9:57 PM

Ok, you’re right. If people want to return to the 19th century, lay the newly deceased out on the dinning room table, and have a wake, who am I to judge?

Skandia Recluse on January 2, 2012 at 9:45 PM

Exactly. It’s not your family. It’s not your child.

katy the mean old lady on January 2, 2012 at 9:57 PM

People grieve in their own way and my heart goes out to the Santorums, and to those here who’ve lost children. Alan Colmes is completely void of humanness for his comments… truly disgusting.

poli-nana on January 2, 2012 at 9:58 PM

Second the banning notion…this comment crosses a line.

Bluray on January 2, 2012 at 9:47 PM

Indeed. Get rid of this arsehole.

Darksean on January 2, 2012 at 9:58 PM

Did they know it was “genetically retarded” before it was stillborn? Does it matter that he was “genetically retarded”?

Herald of Woe on January 2, 2012 at 9:49 PM

This should come as no surprise. The left was equally vile in their references to Palin’s Down’s Syndrome baby, Trig.

Let’s see. What other regime in history wanted to control population by doing away with people who were considered “genetically inferior?” *hmmm, thinking, thinking*

And Monica Crowley’s sister married this POS?

She had to….once he had sunk his teeth into her neck and sucked out her blood…..she had to surrender.

Twana on January 2, 2012 at 9:58 PM

You guys are creeping up on 500 comments in the other thread so I figured you’d want to know how the Santorums reacted.

I love a good dixie land memorial service (funeral, wake). I want ‘Free Bird’ played at mine, even though it’s not jazz or dixieland. I’m very sympathetic to the idea that death is a release, that life is transitory.

I also wouldn’t mind a paupers pine box, incineration, or an unmarked grave.

So take the infant out of the story, and make it dear ol granny; in failing health, goes to the hospital and passes. So you bring dear old granny’s dead body home? Instead of the funeral home?

Ok, like you said, who am I to judge. What else should I not judge my neighbors on, is there a list somewhere? What if they are too fat? Or gay, or immigrant? Can’t judge, right? So I should just shut up I guess. Have a nice day.

I’m pretty sure most Libertarians wouldn’t really care what he did with his dead child.

Funeral directors can tell you all kinds of things that people have done to mourn that we would find strange. I personally wouldn’t do what the Santorums did but then I wouldn’t keep somone’s ashes in a container on the nightstand next to my bed either.(Know someone who does that.) Nor would I pass on the embalming, put the reamains in a large recycled cardboard container and dig the grave in a special woods myself(with the help of family.) Also know someone who did that, the new eco-friendly funeral. Different strokes…

Deanna on January 2, 2012 at 9:58 PM

And of course it was incidental that they had a camera crew on them to collapse into sobs the day before the Iowa caucus. Santorum really wants to win this thing, I guess.

inthemiddle on January 2, 2012 at 9:56 PM

Way to judge them considering all of the candidates have had cameras following them non stop. It’s not like Colmes planned this or they were hoping to orchestrate anything.

Bluray on January 2, 2012 at 9:58 PM

Looks like Colmes stuck his talons in his mouth on this one.

fogw on January 2, 2012 at 9:58 PM

Taking your genetically retarded dead fetus home and sleeping with it in bed is totally normal grief/coping behavior, guys! JEEZ!
nice_poltergeist on January 2, 2012 at 9:42 PM

What is “normal” coping behavior, professor? Please tell.

Jeebus, I’ll say it again, some serious human garbage douchebags slithered in on the last open reg, makes me want to check out until they’re cleansed.

Bishop on January 2, 2012 at 9:59 PM

I wonder why Colmes thought this was a good thing to bring up? Would love to hear the rational other than he thought it was odd, since I think he’s pretty odd but assume he can’t help it.

Grow up, creepy.

What is with the stalkers on this site sometimes? You disagree with another conservative, and they turn into KosKids.

TheBlueSite on January 2, 2012 at 9:59 PM

Could we get this thing banned?

sharrukin on January 2, 2012 at 9:43 PM

Yes please.

And then contact Fox News and get this turd fired.
